    Sleepwalk by Freddie Roulette

    3:11

This was a moment where I could catch some focus on the Main Guy that the benefit was all about. Most of the time Freddie was blurred out in the background from the other supporting musicians that seemed to be competing over sonic dominance . Here was a fine example of Freddie's signature sound captured and preserved for future enjoyment.

As a musician I am always on the look out for something new (to me) and interesting musically. One of the ways I do that is by asking other people, especially musicians, what it is that they really like to listen to that is not mainstream or top 40 and I get all sorts of great suggestions. This particular band was suggested by my cousin Steve Schlecht. We used to jam together as kids and we spent many hours listening to records.

I like to find the most obscure / rare music. This is one of those records.

After moving away and the years past...

I found myself spending hours in a dusty/musty dark room (upstairs of the record store in Duluth,Minnesota, before & during the time I worked there) going through thousands of records trying to guess which one is worth the effort... you have to, there was literally thousands waiting to be discarded. I just can't process the thought of what didn't get saved!

Canned Heat came to Duluth,Minnesota in 1999 with Harvey Mandel as their lead guitar player.Naturally I brought
this record to the show to be autographed which Harvey so graciously obliged.
Autogragh attained at Fitgers Brewery Complex in the Tap Room.
    August 15th,1999
    Thanks Harvey !!!!!

I have a little story that goes with most of our videos and I am trying to get them written as fast as I can but Mark is really gettin' into this so he's raging through our archives of audio and videos to see which ones are worthy of a spot on our channel and MAN, he's gettin' er' done.

So the story for this video goes like this................

I have to say, first of all Mark has raved about Harvey Mandel since the day Mark and I met. In fact we have an extensive record collection which includes most, if not all, of Harvey Mandel's work.
When we recorded this we got to meet Harvey, who was VERY generous and signed over 30 records and CD's for us AND my T-shirt. The man's a genius, he's on everyones albums plus he's made many solos!
Harvey Mandel is credited for developing the two fingered tapping style lead in which Eddie Van Halen used.

    on with the story......
We went to the Electric Fetus to get a pair of drum sticks, I waited in the car for Mark while he went in. When he came out he told me to go back in and look at the front counter. I thought what a wierdo lol....
Anyway I humored him and went in...certainly feeling kinda wierdo-ish myself cause I didn't know what the heck I was looking for.....
so there I am standing, facing the front counter, looking......
then the guy (clerk) asks me if he can help me!!! lol OMG
I don't know how to explain what I'm looking for ....how embarassing....
just then my eyes fall upon it...just below the Clerk....
the poster........ with a picture of them.
    Canned Heat coming to Duluth.
So I think okay. that's it, .......that's what Mark is all weird abou ....
wait a minute!!! That looks like..........

    Is that ..??? No Way.......

    HARVEY MANDEL?

Lo and behold....THAT'S IT, THAT'S what's got Mark all fired up.

Mark's all time, favorite, number one Guitar Guru was coming to town!
Man we've spent MANY hours listening to Harvey Mandel....we are going to get a chance to see him LIVE!! Mark and I have had many conversations about this guy, his bass players, drummers and his music. He is at the top of our inspirations!!!
Someone we thought we'd NEVER see live.....it was exciting for me too because during all these years, I too became a Harvey fan.....P.S. Fito (after signing our canned heat albums) dubbed Mark a Harvey Freak .

Fito (after signing our canned heat albums) dubbed Mark a Harvey Freak .

impromptu freddie roulette performance at subway guitars in berkeley, ca

    5:24

during our november west coast tour, bob stirner and i stopped in to subway guitars in berkeley to poke around a bit and visit with Fatdawg - if you love guitars at all, you should know about this place, period. so, after we'd been there for an hour or so, this slight gentleman walked in and ambled to the back and disappeared up the stairs...fatdawg wouldn't say who he was, but i eventually asked him - was that freddie roulette? he seemed surprised that i was even aware of him, but when he came back in some time later, he brought his gig bag, a small pedalboard, and a crappy little amp and proceeded to blow the top of my head off. this is just a sample of the 20 minutes or so that he played for us, standing there in the store, that afternoon. just an unbelievable guy.
