    Young Kenny Garrett

    9:15

Mel Lewis and the Jazz Orchestra - Dolphin Dance featuring Kenny Garrett and John Mosca. Band includes Joe Lovano, Jim McNeely, Gary Smulyan and Tom Harrell.

Kenny Garrett was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 9, 1960;] he is a 1978 graduate of Mackenzie High School. His father was a carpenter who played tenor saxophone as a hobby. Garrett's own career as a saxophonist took off when he joined the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1978, then led by Duke's son, Mercer Ellington. A few years later he performed in the Mel Lewis Orchestra, playing the music of Thad Jones, and also the Dannie Richmond Quartet, focusing on Charles Mingus's music.
In 1984, he recorded his first album as a bandleader, Introducing Kenny Garrett, on the CrissCross label. He then recorded two albums with Atlantic Records: Prisoner of Love and African Exchange Student. Since 1990 the majority of Garrett albums are co-produced by pianist/composer Donald Brown. Garrett signed to the Warner Bros. Records label, and beginning with Black Hope, in 1992, he has continued to record with them. Among his recordings on Warner Bros. are Pursuance: The Music of John Coltrane, recorded in 1996, and Songbook, his first album made up entirely of his own compositions, recorded in 1997 and nominated for a Grammy Award. During his career, Garrett has performed and recorded with many jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Brad Mehldau, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Brian Blade, Marcus Miller, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, and Mulgrew Miller. Garrett's music sometimes exhibits Asian influences, an aspect which is especially prevalent in his 2006 Grammy-nominated recording, Beyond the Wall.
Garrett is best known in many circles for the five years he spent playing with Miles Davis during Davis's electric period, and has stated that he has become accustomed to this association:

Kenny Garrett solo on Ill Remember April - Transcription Tuesday

    4:07

Transcription Tuesday is a weekly vlog series I started last year where I learn a dope solo and record myself performing it (to the best of my ability lol). Sometimes I transcribe sax solos, sometimes trumpet solos and piano solos. Really whatever solo sticks with me. Just depends.

Sorry I have to share this... So I went to Juilliard and attended when Carl Allen (drummer in this video) was running the program. I remember during my audition he stopped the band (Iand said I reminded him of young Kenny. Then after the audition he told me a bunch of crazy stories about Freddie Hubbard during this time... Experiences like that made school totally worth it!

Hope you enjoy! Some written transcriptions are available on my website:

    Livestream: Kenny Garrett Quintet

    1:47:15

For more than 30 years, Grammy® Award-winning saxophonist, arranger, composer, and bandleader Garrett has garnered critical recognition for his versatility in jazz, blues, and R&B contexts. The Detroit native began his career performing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Mel Lewis Orchestra. In the early 1980s, Garrett began working with Miles Davis, becoming a member of Davis’ working group – a collaboration that lasted for five years.

With more than twenty recordings as a leader as well as appearing on more than 230 as a sideman, Garrett has performed and recorded with a multitude of musical icons, including Art Blakey, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Q-tip, among others. Garrett maintains a prolific touring and recording schedule with his own band as well as the world’s most acclaimed jazz legends. In 2008-2009, Garrett joined Chick Corea and John McLaughlin’s supergroup, “Five Peace Band,” featuring label mate Christian McBride and Vinnie Colaiuta (later Brian Blade). The group’s eponymous album won a Grammy® Award in 2010. Additionally, he was a featured member of Corea’s “Freedom Band” (2010), that included Christian McBride and Roy Haynes.

Garrett’s most recent album, “Do Your Dance” was inspired by audiences moved to rise from their seats and ‘lift a foot!’ According to Garrett. “Some are reluctant to participate because they think that others are better than they are. I tell them, ‘Do your dance.’ That means even if you have to ‘stay in the pocket,’ do the Funky Four Corners or the Nae-Nae, don’t worry about what the other person is doing. Let it all hang out and ‘do your dance!’ “Pushing the World Away” (2013), features the band that he’s mentored for the past few years, Corcoran Holt, McClenty Hunter, Vernell Brown, Benito Gonzalez, Rudy Bird, Marcus Baylor, Mark Whitfield Jr and received a Grammy® nomination for “Best Jazz Instrumental Album”. Garrett’s “Seeds From The Underground” won the 2013 Echo Award (German Grammy) for “Best International Jazz Saxophone Performance”. In June 2016 Garrett’s next recording, “Do Your Dance” will be released by Mack Avenue Records.

In 2011 Garrett presented the commencement address at Berklee College of Music and was awarded an honorary doctorate of music by that prestigious institution.

It was the producer's idea that Freddie Hubbard play all of the nine standards on this CD with a mute in his trumpet. Hubbard was not happy with the restriction, but does his best on the quartet/quintet session with pianist Benny Green, bassist Rufus Reid, drummer Carl Allen and, on three numbers, altoist Kenny Garrett. While it is interesting to hear Freddie Hubbard tackle such material as Topsy, As Time Goes By, Cherokee and Love Me or Leave Me, the music is often more mellow than one might hope, even when uptempo. It's a pleasing but not essential release from the Japanese label Alfa/Compose.~ Scott Yanow Want to be featured on this channel? Submit your content to: berniesbootlegs@gmail.com
