    7:07

Franz von Suppé or Francesco Suppé Demelli (18 April 1819 – 21 May 1895) was an Austrian composer of light operas from the Kingdom of Dalmatia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now part of Croatia). A composer and conductor of the Romantic period, he is notable for his four dozen operettas.

    Ouverture Leichte Kavallerie (Light Cavalry)
    21 March 1866, Carltheater Vienna

Cincinnati Pops conducted by Erich Kunzel

Leichte Kavallerie (Light Cavalry) is an operetta in two acts by Franz von Suppé, with a libretto by Karl Costa (de). It was first performed in the Carltheater, Vienna, on 21 March 1866.

The original work is set in an 19th-century Austrian village where several love intrigues and the discovery of a father-daughter relationship are accompanied by the arrival of a regiment of hussars. In 1934, Hans Bodenstedt (de) completely rewrote the operetta. It was set in the 18th century amid the court intrigues of a Baron and his Hungarian Countess lover, whose ballet company is referred to as the light cavalry.

While much of the operetta remains in relative obscurity, the Light Cavalry Overture is one of Suppé's best known works. The music from the operetta was used as the soundtrack of a film of the same name in 1935

  • Light Cavalry Overture - Franz Von Suppe - 6 manual organ - fun!

    4:27

This is my home organ I put together from Estey Reed organs and electronic keyboards. It can play theatre as well as classical organ genre, jazz and orchestral works. You name it! It's heaps of fun. It combines 100 year old mechanical action with modern day MIDI...I now have the option of a 6th manual (my own 'Stentor' division in honour of the Wanamaker organ) - from which I can now launch yet another complete organ. In this piece I am using the Hereford Cathedral organ for the 'main' organ, and the trumpet of the Cavaille-Coll organ on the 6th manual on 'higher wind pressure' (that's code for increased volume). All the manuals get a workout here - including the original Estey reed organ, 2 Yamaha keyboards, with Hauptwerk - It's a great joy to play! Pardon the slight movement in my camera boom at the start. Thanks for watching.

Franz von Suppé - Light Cavalry, Overture - James Allen Gähres, cond., Ulm Philharmonic:

Franz von Suppé, now aged 27, had already used the overture twice before under other titles, but without success. Indeed, he performed it a third time against the advice of the director of the Theater an der Wien. However, on this third occasion – as a curtain-raiser of the premiere of Karl Elmar’s Poet and Peasant (in German, Dichter und Bauer), a comedy with songs – it worked and was encored on the night of the premiere. The premiere under the baton of Suppé took place at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien on August 24, 1846.
As it happened, the rustic, bucolic mood of the overture, as well as its later exuberance, was particularly appropriate to the character of the play, in which a poet, suffering from a broken heart, makes use of a holiday in the mountains to create all kinds of havoc and confusion among the country belles and their beaux.

The brass play a solemn chorale to begin the overture, followed by a sumptuous 6/8 opening andante. A solo cello gets an extended lyrical melody accompanied by the harp. A vigorous change of mood initiates a broad, exciting and syncopated common-time allegro that gives way to a relaxed episode in crisp waltz time, these two themes now played out in alternation. With its big bold themes and colorful, bright almost bumptious orchestration, the rustic Poet and Peasant overture became, with the very military Leichte Kavallerie (Light Cavalry), the composer’s most famous work. It enchanted generations of popular concert-goers entirely ignorant of its origins and relationship to the forgotten dramatic work in question. Poor Suppé derived no profit at all from this enduring triumph: during a difficult period, he ceded his rights to a Munich publisher for the derisory sum of 8 Thalers.

Suppé would compose nearly fifty operas, mostly in an operetta style, plus an immense number of burlesques and parodies, for a succession of prestigious Viennese theaters.

He conducted many important operatic productions and is credited with establishing (with his 1860 piece Das Pensionat – The Boarding School) the genre of Viennese operetta, as distinct from the French operettas that slightly preceded it and then developed in parallel in Paris. Many of his Viennese operettas were hits, but Suppé never reached quite the height Johann Strauss, Jr. achieved with Die Fledermaus in 1874. Suppé responded two years later with his three-act comic opera Fatinitza, enlisting the same librettists who had crafted Die Fledermaus. It was a huge international success, enabling the composer to purchase an impressive estate in Lower Austria. There he composed his late operetta Boccaccio (1879), based only slightly on the Decameron, which scored what he termed the greatest triumph of his life. By that time he was internationally acclaimed and immensely wealthy. In 1881, he was given the Freedom of the City of Vienna, the ultimate honor for a composer in the city that viewed itself (not unjustly) as the center of song.

Franz von Suppé's operettas were of their time, and almost none of them are produced today. What keeps his name alive are his operetta overtures, principally those for his Dichter und Bauer and Leichte Kavallerie (1866), but sometimes those for Ein Morgen, Mittag und Abend in Wien (Morning, Noon, and Night in Vienna, 1844) and Die schöne Galathée (Beautiful Galatea, 1865).
