  • FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD - Welcome To The Pleasuredome,Two Tribes & Relax (Wembley Arena, 2004

    19:20

17 years after their initial breakup in 1987, the band, whose 1983 hit Relax was banned by the BBC, re-formed to play a one-off Prince's Trust concert at Wembley Arena in November, 2004. Holly Johnson, the original flamboyant frontman, decided not to take part.
Performing with original band members Paul Rutherford, Peter Ped Gill and Mark O'Toole, was Ryan Molloy, 28, who beat 200 hopefuls who flocked to the open audition in Leicester Square a month before their concert performance.

The 2004 Prince's Trust charity performance staged at London's Wembley Arena marked the 25th anniversary in show business of producer Trevor Horn, who made his name overseeing hits by artists like the Buggles, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Yes, and ABC.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood (FGTH), formed in 1980, were a British band popular in the mid-1980s. The group was fronted by Holly Johnson (vocals), with Paul Rutherford (vocals, keyboards), Peter Gill (drums, percussion), Mark O'Toole (bass guitar), and Brian Nash (guitar).

    TUNEAGE:
Welcome to the Pleasuredome is the title track to the 1984 debut album by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The lyrics of the song were inspired by the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
In March 1985, the album track was substantially abridged and remixed for release as the group's fourth UK single.
While criticized at the time of release and afterward for being a song that glorifies debauchery, the lyrics (and video) make clear that the point of the song, just as Coleridge's poem, is about the dangers of this kind of lifestyle.

Two Tribes is the second single by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in the UK by ZTT Records on 4 June 1984. The song was later included on the album Welcome to the Pleasuredome. Presenting a nihilistic, gleeful lyric expressing enthusiasm for a nuclear war, it juxtaposes a relentless pounding bass line and guitar riff inspired by American funk and R&B pop with influences of Russian classical music, in an opulent arrangement produced by Trevor Horn. The recording makes extensive use of samples of the British Protect and Survive public information films on how to survive a nuclear attack.
Supported by a striking advertising campaign depicting the band as members of the Red Army and a wide range of remixes, the single was a phenomenal success in the UK, immediately entering at the number one position on 10 June 1984 and staying at the top of the UK Singles Chart for nine consecutive weeks, during which time the group's previous single Relax climbed back up the charts to number two. It was the longest running number-one single in the UK of the 1980s. It has sold 1.58 million copies in the UK as of November 2012. Songwriters Johnson, Gill and O'Toole received the 1984 Ivor Novello award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. In 2015 the song was voted by the British public as the nation's 14th favourite 1980s number one in a poll for ITV.

Relax is the debut single by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in the United Kingdom by ZTT Records in 1983. The song was later included on the album Welcome to the Pleasuredome (1984).

Although fairly inauspicious upon initial release, Relax finally reached number one on the UK singles chart on 24 January 1984, ultimately becoming one of the most controversial and most commercially successful records of the entire decade. The single eventually sold a reported 2 million copies in the UK alone, making it the seventh best-selling single in the UK Singles Chart's history Following the release of the group's second single, Two Tribes, Relax rallied from a declining UK chart position during June 1984 to climb back up the UK charts and re-attain number-two spot behind

Two Tribes at number one, representing simultaneous chart success by a single act, unprecedented since the early 1960s.

Upon release in the United States in late 1984, Relax repeated its slow UK progress, reaching number 67 upon initial release, but eventually reaching number 10 in March 1985.
The song won Best British Single at the 1985 Brit Awards.
The song was used in the films Body Double, Police Academy, Gotcha!, Bony a klid, Zoolander, and The Proposal. It was featured in a season one episode of Miami Vice Little Prince , in The Simpsons episode Homer the Smithers and in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, Saints Row: The Third, and a 2009 television advertisement for Virgin Atlantic, marking 25 years since the company's foundation.

  • Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax. Top Of The Pops 1984

    3:47

Good quality video recorded live in the studio from Top Of The Pops 1984. Frankie Goes to Hollywood (FGTH) were a British dance-pop band popular in the mid-1980s. The Liverpool, England group was fronted by Holly Johnson (vocals), with Paul Rutherford (vocals, keyboards), Peter Gill (drums, percussion), Mark O'Toole (bass guitar) and Brian Nash (guitar).

The group's debut single Relax was famously banned by the BBC in 1984 while at number six in the charts and subsequently topped the UK singles chart for five consecutive weeks, going on to enjoy prolonged chart success throughout that year and ultimately becoming the seventh best-selling UK single of all time (as of May 2006). After the follow-up success of Two Tribes and The Power of Love, FGTH became only the second act in the history of the UK charts to reach number one with their first three singles; the first being Gerry & the Pacemakers in 1964.

Relax was released by ZTT in October 1983 and got a modicum of airplay, allowing it steady progress into the UK Top 40. Following a debut on the BBC's Top Of The Pops on 5 January 1984 while at number 35, the single rose to number six in the charts the following week.

On 11 January 1984, BBC Radio 1 disc jockey Mike Read was playing the record on his show when he noticed the front cover design (by Yvonne Gilbert). Read apparently became outraged by the overtly sexual nature of both the record sleeve and the printed lyrics, which prompted him to remove the disc from the turntable live on air, branding it obscene.

Two days later -- almost three months after the single's initial release, and just eight days after the group's Top Of The Pops appearance -- the BBC banned the record from all its TV and radio outlets, with the exception of its Top 40 show. Relax immediately shot to Number One in the UK charts and stayed there for five weeks, during which time the BBC could not feature the nation's best-selling single on Top Of The Pops.

The original video directed by Bernard Rose depicted a gay S&M den (filmed in the unused East London theatre Wilton's Music Hall), which was promptly banned by both the BBC and MTV, resulting in the production of a substitute video directed by filmmaker Brian De Palma to coincide with the release of his film Body Double.

The BBC lifted its ban on Relax at the end of 1984 to allow the band to perform it on the Christmas edition of Top of the Pops (it had been, aside from Band Aid, the biggest-selling single of the year).

In 2003, the VH-1 program Bands Reunited brought Johnson, Rutherford, Gill, Nash, and Mark O'Toole together from the far corners of the world, in the hope of their agreeing to perform impromptu on the show. By all appearances, the bandmates got on well enough and enjoyed seeing each other again, but a reunion performance did not eventually transpire. Both Johnson and Nash had reservations about performing at short notice in the contrived manner dictated by the TV show format.

Nevertheless, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Trevor Horn's involvement in the music industry, in 2004 a special concert took place at Wembley Arena in November, featuring three of the original FGTH line-up, Mark O'Toole, Peter (Ped) Gill and Paul Rutherford and another former member, Jed O'Toole. Original vocalist Johnson, who announced via the Internet that he would not be appearing, and guitarist Nash, who declined to appear for his own reasons, did not take part. Jed O'Toole took over guitar duties for the event, whilst an open audition was held for a new singer for the concert. Ryan Molloy was recruited as a result.

The same lineup (with Molloy and Jed O'Toole, but without Johnson or Nash) reunited for a tour in 2005 playing festivals in Europe. They headlined at Faceparty's Big Gay Out festival at Hyde Park in London.

After some confusion with ensuing tour dates, the band posted a warning on their website that many of the tour dates listed by ticket promoters were inaccurate. The band became increasingly focused on the release of a new album during 2007. However, in early April 2007 came the news that Gill, Rutherford, J. O'Toole and Molloy had formed Forbidden Hollywood to play their new songs alongside old FGTH material. This was to avoid legal issues with Holly Johnson over use of the Frankie Goes to Hollywood name. Live dates were announced, but in June 2007, these were cancelled and the band collapsed with the departure of Molloy.

    Band members:
    Holly Johnson - lead vocals (1980--1987) - born 1960
    Mark O'Toole - bass (1980--1987) - born 1964
    Jed O'Toole - bass, guitar (1980--1982) - born 1960

  • THE POWER OF LOVE FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

    9:40

The Power of Love è il titolo del terzo singolo estratto dall'album Welcome to the Pleasuredome dei Frankie Goes to Hollywood, pubblicato nel 1984.

The Power of Love si posizionò, come i singoli che l'avevano preceduto (Relax e Two Tribes) in vetta alla classifica inglese dei 45 giri.

I'll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door

    Feels like fire
I'm so in love with you
    Dreams are like angels
They keep bad at bay-bad at bay
    Love is the light
    Scaring darkness away-yeah

I'm so in love with you
    Burns the soul
    Make love your goal

    The power of love
    A force from above
    Cleaning my soul
    Flame on burn desire
    Love with tongues of fire
    Burns the soul
    Make love your goal

I'll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door
When the chips are down I'll be around
    With my undying, death-defying
    Love for you

    Envy will hurt itself
    Let yourself be beautiful
    Sparkling love, flowers
    And pearls and pretty girls
    Love is like an energy
    Rushin' rushin' inside of me

    The power of love
    A force from above
    Cleaning my soul
    Flame on burn desire
    Love with tongues of fire
    Burns the soul
    Make love your goal

    This time we go sublime
    Lovers entwine-divine divine
Love is danger, love is pleasure
    Love is pure-the only treasure

I'm so in love with you
    Burns the soul
    Make love your goal

    The power of love
    A force from above
    Cleaning my soul
    The power of love
    A force from above
    A sky-scraping dove

    Flame on burn desire
    Love with tongues of fire
    Burns the soul
    Make love your goal

    Oh oh
    Wee-ell-Now!

    Relax don't do it
When you want to go to it
    Relax don't do it
    When you want to come
    Relax don't do it
    When you want to come
    When you want to come

    Relax don't do it
When you want to to go to it
    Relax don't do it
    When you want to come
    Relax don't do it
When you want to suck to it
    Relax don't do it
    When you want to come
    Come-oh oh oh

But shoot it in the right direction
Make making it your intention-ooh yeah
    Live those dreams
    Scheme those schemes
    Got to hit me
    Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams

    I'm coming
    I'm coming-yeah

    Relax don't do it
When you want to go to it
    Relax don't do it
    When you want to come

    Relax don't do it
When you want to suck to it
    Relax don't do it (love)
    When you want to come
    When you want to come
    When you want to come
    Come-huh

    Get it up
    The scene of love
    Oh feel it

    Relax
    Higher higher

    Hey-
    Pray

Relax is the debut single by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, released in the United Kingdom by ZTT Records in 1983. The song was later included on the album Welcome to the Pleasuredome (1984).
Although fairly inauspicious upon initial release, Relax finally reached number one on the UK singles chart on 22 January 1984,[4] ultimately becoming one of the most controversial and most commercially successful records of the decade. The single eventually sold a reported 2 million copies in the UK alone, making it the seventh best-selling single in the UK Singles Chart's history. Following the release of the group's second single, Two Tribes, Relax rallied from a declining UK chart position during June 1984 to climb back up the UK charts and re-attain the number 2 spot behind Two Tribes at number 1, making them the only act at the time to have occupied the top two simultaneously apart from The Beatles and John Lennon.

  • Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes. Top Of The Pops 1984

    Peter Gill - drums (1980--1987) - born 1964

Frankie Goes to Hollywood Relax ( Holly Johnson ) :: Lyrics :: This video features the ex-Frankie Goes To Hollywood frontman at the 80s Rewind Festival (August 2011) at Henley-On-Thames, England, with his performance of the controversial hit single from the 80s, Relax. Released in October 1983, the song was meandering outside the Top 40 until it was famously banned by the BBC, after DJ Mike Read discovered that the lyrics were of a sexual nature. He refused to play the song, although the band denied (initially) that they contained anything of this nature, and other commercial radio stations were playing the song...::: Lyrics :::: Relax, don't do it
When you want to go to it
    Relax, don't do it
    When you want to come
    Relax, don't do it
    When you want to come
