This is an amazing video of the late Floyd Red Crow Westerman performing Kris Kristofferson's 'They Killed Him' (thanks AuroraKismet ;-) ) at the Rainbow Warrior Festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico in August of 1988.

I had the privilege of stage managing that event and of all the 20+ amazing acts on the bill, this song stuck out as one of the most moving of the entire 12 hours of music. Authentic, powerful, moving...real.

I was producer of an event a few months following this event in LA at the Director's Guild theater. Floyd was invited to lead the invocation. Turns out he walked down the main isle with a burning bundle of sage...that was about to set off the fire alarm, trigger the sprinklers and send 500 people out the door, ruining the event. He didn't know...and I didn't know that this would be an issue....but there it was...bigger than life. I tried to communicate that he needed to snuff out the sage but he went on with his invocation (which, of course, was beautiful)...and there I am...the white boy idiot...flailing my arms for him to put out the fire...and him looking at me like I'm, well, the white boy idiot. Afterwards I approached him and apologized, explained the situation with the fire department and all...and he said...'Well, I guess that's another good example of 'a clash of cultures'' and turned away. What do you say to that? It's too true. I wanted to go hide under a rock but we had an event to do...but that stuck with me.

    I loved Floyd's performance...from the heart of a true Sage...to you.

    Enjoy with love....

  • Floyd Red Crow Westerman - Where Were You When?

    3:02

    Where were you when
    We needed you our friend?
    Where were you when
    We needed you to ben
And now you claim to be
    Part Souix or Cherokee
    But where were you when
We came close to the end?

When our land was being stolen
    justifies
    When we were being massacured
    You didn't even cry
When they put us on reservation
    You didn't loose any sleep
When we were starving half to death
    You had enough to eat!

    Where were you when
    we needed you, our friend?
    where were you when
    We needed you to bend
And now you claim to be
    Part Souix or Cherokee
    But where were you when
We came close to the end?

    When we had no voice
    You never said a word
When we cried out to you
    You never even heard
When our freedom was being denied
    You never questioned why
    When we needed help
Somehow, the well was always dry.

    So tell me,
    Where were you when
    We needed you, our friend?
    Where were you when,
    We needed you to bend?
And now you claim to be!
    part souix or cherokee
    But where were you when,
We came close to the end?

    Where were you when
    We needed you, our friend?
    Where were you when,
    We needed you to bend?
And now you claim to be!

    But where were you when,

    Custer died for your sins!
    Custer died for your sins!
Oh, a new day must begin

  • Floyd Red Crow Westerman - Red, White and Black

    2:02

Floyd Red Crow Westerman's Red, White and Black Lyrics.

America! You invite the Red Man
    To sit at your table
    And be your guest
To justify the guilt that you are feeling
And now you tell us that
    You like us the best
    And the Black Man
    Is waiting on the sideline
    For the chance
    To get into your game
    To show you that
He's just as good as you are
    To prove to you
That he can be the same
    And the triangle
    That you have created
    Keeps you by yourself
    And keeps you paranoid
    For the Red, White
And Blue that you keep flying
    Or the Red and White
    And Black that you avoid
    Cause the Red Man
Was here so long before you
    While the Black man
Was a slave you brought ashore
    And the Red Man
Was killed to free a fronteir
While the Black Man was killed
    For sport and nothing more!
    And you wonder why
The Red Man won't elect you
    You should wonder why
    The Black will never be
Cause you came to this land
    Because you wanted freedom
    But that you have forgotten!
    Now that you are free....

  • Miracle Healing Song Floyd Red Crow Westerman asked me to record

    8:53

This is a song Floyd inspired that he asked me to record and share with as many relatives as possible

It talks about ou first meeting and some awesome things he taught me. Don't have funds to make copies for everone so thank God for You Tube!
One of the elders heard him singing in the background and started crying healing tears. Says it's a good song to remind us all to aim for peace.

Will be interesting to see how many other people hear his voice and cry healing tears too bringing miracles, hope and peace the way he hoped and is probably praying for too.

    2:08

Floyd Red Crow Westerman's Or Do You Care Lyrics

    Can you see the sun?
    Can you feel the wind?
Do they tell you anything at all?
    Or do you care?
    Or do you care?

    If the sun should change..
    And the rain should fall..
Would it matter anything at all?
    Or do you care?
    Or do you care?

Oh, the circle that we live in is so strong!
And the things that you believed in were so wrong
But the changes will take place before too long

    There's a way to live
    There's a way to die
But you don't have to die this way at all
    Or do you care?
    Or do you care?

    There are things to know
There are things to be said
Maybe you should live a different way instead
    Or do you care?
    Or do you care?

    Or do you care?

  • Floyd Red Crow and Jan Michael Looking Wolf in The Legend of Tillamooks Gold

    2:58

Julie (Suzanne Marie Doyon), a lonely 14-year-old, is in for the most amazing summer of her life when she finds an ancient coin on the beach and uncovers a local Native-American legend about a long-lost mountain treasure. With the help of her grandfather (Emmy nominee Max Gail, Barney Miller) and his friend, Standing Elk (Floyd Red Crow Westerman, Dances with Wolves), Julie embarks on a fantastic mystical adventure to find the Tillamook Treasure.

In a scene on the beach at night by a fire, a young girl played by Suzanne Marie Doyon (Pennobscot/MikMaq heritage)seeks out the local spiritual leader and tribal elder (Floyd Red Crow Westerman) for guidance to a vision quest. Jan Michael plays the flute while the elder shares a beautiful story of native people. Then they have a short prayer together. Jan plays the traditional Rabbit Song with Floyd singing/playing the drum. The young girl then sees a face of a spirit in the fire that speaks to her.

After Jan collaborated with well known music producer Peter Buffet on the sound track (Jan wrote and performed the native flute for the movie), Bright Light Studio offered Jan a role in the movie and created a character just for him. In addition, they named the tribal elders character after Jans real life uncle Standing Elk who had recently passed on what an honor. After dozens of movies, recordings, and countless accomplishments in the entertainment industry and native culture, Floyd recently passed on as well. The nation misses him and will never forget his contributions.

Jan remains truly blessed to have worked with Floyd. The Film has now won several film festival awards for Best Family Film. You can also visit the movie website at or

    5:01

Great recording of a great song written by Peter LaFarge and also recorded by
Johnny Cash for his album 'Bitter Tears - Ballads of the American Indian'

note: Peter LaFarge was a very good Indian Folksinger and most famous for writing 'The Ballad of Ira Hayes', one of Johnny Cash' biggest hitrecords.

LYRICS to 'DRUMS' (written by Peter LaFarge) - lyrics here newly added on march 20, 2011.

From the Indian Reservation to the Governmental School
Well, they're going to educate me to the White Man's golden rule
And i'm learning very quickly for i've learned to be ashamed
And i come when they call 'Billy !' , 'though i've got an Indian name.

And there are drums beyond the mountain
Indian drums that you can't hear
There are drums beyond the mountain
    and they're getting mighty near.

And when they think that they've changed me, cut my hair to meet their needs.
Will they think i'm white or Indian, quarterblood or just halfbreed?
Let me tell you, Mr. Teacher, when you say you'll make me right,
in 500 years of fighting NOT ONE INDIAN TURNED WHITE !

    And there are drums ...

Well, you thought that i knew nothing, when you brought me here to school.
Just another empty Indian, just America's first fool.
But i can tell you stories that are burnt and dried and old.
And in the shadow of their telling walks the thunder proud and bold.

    And there are drums ....

Long Pine and Sequoia, Handsome Lake and Sitting Bull.
There's Magnus Colorado with his sleeves so red and full.
    Crazy Horse the Legend, those who bit off Custer's soul;
They are dead, yet they are living with the great Geronimo.

    And there are drums ....

Well, you may teach me this land's history, but we taught it to you first.
We broke your hearts and bent your journeys; broken treaties left us cursed.
Even now you have to cheat us, even though you think us tame.
In our losing we found proudness, in your winning YOU FOUND SHAME !

    And there are drums ...

(note: every word here is true !!)

Love and peace and hope to all of you.

Floyd Red Crow Westerman's Task Force Lyrics

Send the Task Force down from Washington
    Check out their complaints
    The Indians are unhappy
And they're putting on the paint
They say their treatment is not fair
    And they blame the B.I.A
But you know you can't believe
A single word the Red Skins say
But you know you can't believe
A single word the Red Skins say

It's the very same old problem
That we had two years ago
They say they want more programs
And the farms are getting own
    Wrote down their massive questions
And they stand around a while
And they'll make out our report
    And we can latter file
And they'll make out our report
    And we can latter file

But it's got to be kept secret
No one should know that we're there
And all you have to do is tell them
Just what they want to hear
Send the Task Force down from washington
    To check out their complaints
    The indians are unhappy
But is there a time when they ain't?

    The indians are unhappy
But is there a time when they ain't?

    Trouble in the city
    Trouble in the country side
Can't sweep it under the rug
You got trouble you can't hide

    Trouble on a reservation
    Trouble in the ghetto too
And the lies you told my children
    Are coming down on you

How long have you been blind?
Been coming a long, long time!

    Trouble in the jail house
    Trouble out in the street
You can't blame it on someone else
You got no place to retreat

    Trouble in your courtroom
    Trouble written on the wall
And all the pieces of your mistakes
    Are starting to fall

How long have you been blind?
Been coming a long, long time!

And now the crowd is leaving
But they got no place to go
There's a red man in the mountain
    Standing in the snow
    Time will be a season
I know it will come to pass
But those who listen to the sign
    Will behold to a land

How long have you been blind?
Been coming a long, long time!

    Trouble with the countries
Trouble with the way you live
You've been taking for so long
You don't know how to give

How long have you been blind?
Been coming a long, long time!
