Well I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
    Well it goes like this:
The fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift
    The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Well your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to her kitchen chair
And she broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

But baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
You know, I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Well there was a time when you let me know
    What's really going on below
But now you never show that to me do ya
But remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

    Maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who's seen the light
    It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

    From Paste Magazine:

JT Nero (JT and the Clouds) and Allison Russell (Po’ Girl) make up Chicago’s Americana gospel dream team Birds of Chicago, and they are releasing their latest single, “Real Midnight.”

“Well…we are often the absolute worst to the ones we love the most,” said vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Allison Russell. “That’s just a hard fact. This song began as an attempt to snap ourselves out of that loop, and it ended up being sort of a thesis statement for the whole album.”

“Real Midnight” is the title track off of the duo’s upcoming sophomore album, out February 19.

“It’s probably the most personal thing I’ve ever written,” added songwriter/vocalist/guitarist JT Nero of the song. “And that can be a little rough, but it’s good medicine. We sing it because we need to. Unless you’re some a sociopath, it feels better to love and to be loving. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth the fight.”

  • Buddy Miles at Chicago Blues, N.Y. April 17th, 1999 Part 1 All Along The Watchtower

Buddy Miles at Chicago Blues, N.Y. April 17th, 1999 Part 1 All Along The Watchtower Video by Larry Blumenstein Video Productions. Contact:, 917-817-2112. (Copyright 2013) (c)
Best known as the drummer in Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys, Buddy Miles also had a lengthy solo career that drew from rock, blues, soul, and funk in varying combinations. Born George Miles in Omaha, NE, on September 5, 1947, he started playing the drums at age nine, and joined his father's jazz band the Bebops as a mere 12 year old. As a teenager, he went on to play with several jazz and R&B outfits, most prominently backing vocal groups like Ruby & the Romantics, the Ink Spots, and the Delfonics. In 1966, he joined Wilson Pickett's touring revue, where he was spotted by blues-rock guitarist Mike Bloomfield. Bloomfield had left the Paul Butterfield Blues Band earlier in 1967 and was putting together a new group, the Electric Flag, which was slated to be an ambitious fusion of rock, soul, blues, psychedelia, and jazz. Bloomfield invited Miles to join up, and the band made its debut at the Monterey Pop Festival; unfortunately, the original lineup splintered in 1968. With founder Bloomfield gone, Miles briefly took over leadership of the band on its second studio album, which failed to reignite the public's interest.
With the Electric Flag's horn section in tow, Miles split to form his own group, the similarly eclectic Buddy Miles Express. Signed to Mercury, the group issued its debut album, Expressway to Your Skull, in 1968, with Miles' fellow Monterey Pop alum Jimi Hendrix in the producer's chair. In turn, Miles played on Hendrix's Electric Ladyland album, and later took part in an all-star jam session that resulted in Muddy Waters' Fathers and Sons album. Hendrix also produced the Miles Express' follow-up, 1969's Electric Church, and disbanded his backing band the Experience later that year; shortly afterward, Hendrix, Miles, and bassist Billy Cox formed Band of Gypsys, one of the first all-black rock bands. Bluesier and funkier than Hendrix's previous work, Band of Gypsys didn't last long in its original incarnation; Miles departed in 1970, replaced by Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, but not before his powerhouse work was showcased on the group's lone album, the live Band of Gypsys.
After backing John McLaughlin on 1970's Devotion, Miles returned to the role of bandleader and recorded his most popular album, Them Changes, in 1971; it stayed on the charts for more than a year, and the title cut became Miles' signature song. From December 1971 to April 1972, Miles toured with Carlos Santana, which produced the CBS-released concert document Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles! Live!; recorded inside an inactive volcano in Hawaii, the album sold very well, climbing into the Top Ten. Miles cut a few more albums for CBS, participated in a short-lived Electric Flag reunion in 1974, then moved to Casablanca in 1975 for a pair of LPs. Aside from a one-off album for Atlantic in 1981 (Sneak Attack), Miles kept a low profile over the next decade, partly to battle personal problems.
Miles returned in 1986 as the lead voice in a TV ad campaign that featured clay-animated raisins singing I Heard It Through the Grapevine; the ads proved so popular that a kid-friendly musical franchise was spun off, and thus Miles became the lead singer of the California Raisins, performing on two albums (mostly R&B covers) and a Christmas special. Additionally, Miles rejoined his old friend Carlos Santana as the official lead vocalist of Santana during part of the late '80s, making his studio debut on 1987's Freedom. In the early '90s, Miles played with Bootsy Collins (both solo and as members of Hardware), and in 1994 he formed a new version of the Express and recorded Hell and Back for Rykodisc. Miles Away From Home followed in 1997 on Hip-O. Miles toured steadily through the '90s, and subsequently formed a more straightforward blues band called the Blues Berries with guitarist Rocky Athas; their first album, Blues Berries, appeared on Ruf in 2002.

Let me first say that I am not sponsored by Gibson in any way. I make these history videos for educational purposes, my own, and hopefully as a result, yours. I hope you enjoy it.

This is my short history of the Gibson Les Paul, from Creation to Custom Shop. You might think that short here in the title is something of a misnomer, but the history of about 50 years worth of guitars is packed in to this.

I am fully aware that I couldn't fit every single model here (I actually learned of many I'd NEVER heard of during the research) but tried to choose each guitar for its effect on the direction the model took as time went by.

I'm sure I can count on you to add those in the comments. :)

Two books in particular helped in pulling the video together. These are Amazon links and we get a small percentage from Amazon to help support the channel. Thanks

The Gibson Les Paul: The Guitar That Changed Rock by David Hunter

The Les Paul Guitar Book by Tony Bacon

Finally I need to thanks Dave Onorato of Dojo Guitar Repair in Atlanta, Georgia. Dave has been helped me from brainstorming to final fact checking scripts and for that I am grateful.

A lover, and owner of some exceptional Les Paul's he even broke one out to provide the original music at the beginning and the end of the video.

I'd add that some subscribers have commented on the seeming duality of the channel. Encouraging minimalism while posting histories of instruments that might, in some, inspire passing (or prolonged) moments of gear lust. This is not my intention. I have come the long way around to learning to think something is beautiful without feeling that I need to own it. It is perhaps a fine distinction but also one I believe we should take more time to ponder.

    Thanks for watching.

Oct. 30, 2017 | Abby O'Neill -- Can you believe it? Yes, those are The Roots packed behind the Tiny Desk. Black Thought, Questlove and the crew carved out a few hours in their hectic Tonight Show schedule to visit NPR headquarters in Washington D.C. Why travel four hours for a 12-minute concert when you own the late-night airwaves? The answer can be found in the lyrics to The Roots' new song, It Ain't Fair.

Armed with the incredible vocalist Bilal, The Roots performed the signature track from Detroit, a film about the race riots in 1967. It Ain't Fair glares unflinchingly, takes a knee and raises a fist against the societal construct that has systematically denied equality of experience to those presumed inferior, to quote one of Bilal's verses. And it achieves all this while covering its heart with its right hand. This reflective hymn tenderly yanks your heart strings and offers a window into the ethos of those who would like to stand for the flag but cannot in good principle, lest these same evils continue to exist.

Those lucky enough to be in the Tiny Desk audience witnessed masters at work. Black Thought is truly one of the most intelligent emcees ever, and his razor-sharp lyricism was on full display. Questlove, a musical and cultural historian nonpareil, was both a metronomical and moral anchor. It felt like the culmination of decades of academic rigor and boom-bap sessions, fittingly backed by a seven-piece horn section. Bilal's falsetto-laced vocals and warm resonance evoked powerful messaging reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield's Don't Worry, delivered with the eccentricity of Prince.

Late last year, Common premiered Letter to the Free at the Tiny Desk and later won an Emmy for the song. It wouldn't surprise me if It Ain't Fair becomes another award-winning performance when the Oscars roll around early next year. This is a song that deserves to be heard in the millions of households that watch The Roots every night.

    It Ain't Fair

    Remember and Give Thanks

Every year on Memorial Day, a young woman visits the small community cemetery in her hometown. She is often drawn to four gravestones standing side by side. They mark the resting places of Clyde, LeRoy, Rolon, and Rulon Borgstrom. She never knew them, but she knows their story. Everyone in the small town of Tremonton, Utah, knows their story.

In 1944, the Borgstrom family sent five sons to war. And in less than six months, four of the five boys had perished. Clyde was killed in an accident while clearing an airstrip. LeRoy was shot caring for a wounded comrade in Italy. Rolon died in Germany after a bombing raid. His twin brother, Rulon, died in France. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt heard of these four tragedies all striking the same family, he ordered the military to send the fifth brother, Boyd, home from his assignment in the Pacific. Boyd did not want to leave, but he finally relented and came home.

When the bodies of the deceased brothers were laid to rest in that small cemetery, the whole community came together to mourn the Borgstrom family’s incredible loss.

Many years later, during one of her annual visits to the cemetery, the young woman met the wife of the surviving brother. She asked her, “How did the mother of the Borgstrom boys cope with such a loss?” The wife responded, “She turned to heaven.” In worship and prayer she found comfort and strength.

Of course, heavenly thoughts don’t remove us from life’s realities. But they do provide perspective. They help us remember and reflect. It’s good for the soul to pause and give thanks for the lives of those who have given so much. Would we have hope and freedom without them? Would we have a chance of peace and prosperity without the brave men and women who protect us still today?

Memorial Day is a day to decorate graves and remember those who went before us—especially those who died serving our country. We honor their valiant service and hold sacred their sacrifice. Each of them deserves to be remembered. Let us never forget.

    Episode 4628. Aired May 27, 2018.

  • 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard Scarface | CME Vintage Demo

Here at CME, we have the honor and privilege of curating and playing many amazing instruments. Every so often though, something comes along that stops us all in our tracks and leaves us speechless. That's exactly what happened when we first opened up the brown Stone case and laid our eyes on the absolutely stunning top on this incredible Burst that we're ironically calling scarface. It earned that nickname because a previous owner (who undoubtedly was a Jimmy Page fan) decided to add an onboard fuzz circuit to the underside of the pickguard which was bulky enough that it required the removal of a small portion of the top in order for it to fit. Fortunately, in July of 1988, a very skilled luthier did a tremendous job of reverting the beauty back as close to its original cosmetic condition as possible by placing a piece of maple which matched the surrounding grain very well into where it was once removed. This repair is completely invisible under the pickguard. No photograph really does justice to the figured top of this guitar, although it does look great in the popular book Beauty of the 'Burst.

Equally as impressive as this guitar's gorgeous looks are its effortless playability, the impressive resonance of the aged woods, and the astounding sound of the PAF pickups through a good tube amp. It's no wonder why this guitar has become the standard that so many builders have based their solid body models on. It's also no surprise that this year and model instrument was used by seminal artists on timeless recordings such as Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton.

  • Saint featuring 2 Con Ritmo - Puerto Rico, images of Chicagos Flags of Steel.

Today’s Latino/Hispanic Heritage Month Respect goes to – not an individual, or a specific group pf people, but a monument that has stood tall for many individuals, community groups and families who have settled into Chicago’s Humboldt Park community, and the surrounding Puerto Rican neighborhoods, businesses, community service and youth service agencies.

Chicago’s “Flags of Steel” were erected on the east and west borders of Paseo Boricua, Division Street, between Western Avenue on the east, and California Avenue on the west, in 1995, by a group of prominent Chicago politicians, including then 26th Ward Alderman Billy Ocasio, Congressman Luis V. Gutierrez, and then Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

The Flags have appeared in many publications, and have been featured prominently in feature films and television documentaries, including a PBS documentary on the making of the steel structures, which measure 56 feet long, and 55 feet tall, while weighing 30 tons each. They were installed over five months during a typical Chicago winter in honor of Chicago’s Puerto Rican population, which has been documented as first arriving in the middle 1940’s, as those early arrivals sought to work in the steel mills, while searching to afford a better life, in support of their loved ones, both in Puerto Rico, and in their newly adopted city in America.

As Paseo Boricua and Humboldt Park has undergone changes in their community, due to some gentrification and the rising cost of housing, the Flags remain as a beacon of hope, and as a community anchor. The Flags of Steel are an embrace to our community, and for many – an introduction to our culture. The music, the families, the food and the traditions of Chicago’s Puerto Rican community can be found between the steel structures, and although there has been an occasional threat of removing or displacing the Flags, the community has always stood tall and protected the anchors of our community. Steel Standing for much more than their height and weight, they stand for the collective impact and presence of a proud community, and for all of our generations – past and present.

Although I could have copy/pasted images of our Flags of Steel, I chose to use only images that I have personally taken throughout the years, with the exception of two photos that were taken by my friend Lizette Reyes, who took some winter photos of the Flags for me as she was driving down Division Street for a unique perspective. I find the Flags majestic, and I have not tired of capturing their presence.

  • Animal Flag - Cathedrals | Audiotree Live

Download & stream Animal Flag on Audiotree Live --

Animal Flag is a dynamic rock outfit who pen poetic tunes about doubt and loss. What began as Matthew Politoski's solo project has morphed into a full quartet and made a tonal shift from Politoski's folk roots. On record, the folk and songwriter influence remains, but on stage these songs take new form as heavy-laden, escalating rock anthems. Check out the performance by Animal Flag on Audiotree Live.

Recorded on May 16, 2017 in Chicago, IL.
