    Score

Downloadable audio CD of all 19 pieces (Esprit de Cor)

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
This sequence and melody was inspired by a poem written by a friend called Otto Wanke,
who was going through the teenage angst of splitting up with the first girl he loved.
The title (Feuer und Wasser = Fire and Water) refers to the idea that these two elements are incompatible, but the music (in minor mode with occasional hints of Dorian) is a simple lament rather than a musical description of the elements in question.
The music was originally written as a song for alto voice with classical guitar accompaniment.
The poem is a somewhat resigned teenage-angst song of unrequited love:

    Ich muss mich damit abfinden
dass Feuer und Wasser nicht zusammen passen
Das Feuer das mit heller Flamme leuchtet
    das seine Umgebung anzünden möchte
    das knistert.
Das Wasser das gemächlich vor sich hinfliesst
das sich nur langsam erwärmen lässt,
    das sucht
    das sucht
    Ich muss mich damit abfinden
dass Feuer und Wasser nicht zusammen passen.
    © Otto Wanke

    My English version:

I must settle my mind on this
that fire and water do not go together
Hot fire whose great flames flare up so brightly
    which wants to set light
    to all things around it
    spits fiercely
Cool water smoothly flows ahead so slowly
and takes so long to warm up
    and seeps
    in search
    in search
I must settle my mind on this
that fire and water do not go together.

    Score

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
Instrumental arrangement of my song based on my mother's poem Dawn in the Room
    The pale gold light
    creeps into my silent room
    touching my face
I know that you are here.

    Softly contours form
    as the colours
    take the place of grey

    Translucent gold hits the mirror
    and reaches my lonely bed.

Dispels the grey mist which lingers
    on the window pane
Deepens the image and I see you.

    Pale blond light
    where your hair once shone.

    Lonely shadow of my
    former self
    I languish here.

But then your dear voice calls
    with comfort, love
    and says
    I have not left,
    while your fond memories remain.
I think of you and you are here
    beside and within

    Your image fades
but you are still here in me.

    You must
    you must come back
    if only at dawn.

See through the tears of gold,
    you are here once more
    Your ghostly presence
    fills my poor heart,

    searching my mind
once more to be as one,

    here is your body
    so close to my own
    in this spectral world
    we share our thoughts.

My soul now quiet at last
    my yearnings on hold.

The golden glow brings me peace
and I might face another day

    Score

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
The Swallows is based on the poem by Gourgen Mahari, as translated from the Armenian by James Russell.
The Armenian poet Gourgen Mahari, who died in the USSR in 1969 is lamenting his many compatriots
who were exiled, dispossessed and killed during the 20th century (poem shown below)

Far in the distant Nile Valley down nameless highways unknown,
where the Dead Sea`s gloomy ripples break,
straining on their way unfinished home,
with a song in their hearts, the swallows died,
    unable to return.
Far in the distant Nile Valley down down nameless highways unknown.
They never came back to adorn the Spring with heady song,
to chant with the winds the green meadow, rebuild abandoned nests.
They died on distant mountains, plains afar, unable to return.
    Far away.
Can they subsist with the love of our hearts
or our gardens` blossoms gay or our joyous vernal rains?
They who died on the way unfinished home.
Far in the distant Nile Valley.
    Unable to return.

The original song - performed by the composer - can be heard at

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
Instrumental version of a song inspired by Verlaine's poem Dans l'interminable ennui de la plaine
The guitar part makes use of the technique duplicating notes on different strings.
    [English translation follows]

    Dans l’interminable
    Ennui de la plaine
    La neige incertaine
    Luit comme du sable.

    Le ciel est de cuivre
    Sans lueur aucune.
    On croirait voir vivre
    Et mourir la lune.

    Comme des nuées
    Flottent gris les chênes
    Des forêts prochaines
    Parmi les buées.

    Le ciel est de cuivre
    Sans lueur aucune.
    On croirait voir vivre
    Et mourir la lune.

    Corneille poussive
    Et vous, les loups maigres,
    Par ces bises aigres
    Quoi donc vous arrive?

    Dans l’interminable
    Ennui de la plaine
    La neige incertaine
    Luit comme du sable.

    Unending bound
    of tedious land,
    and snow gleams down
    like shifting sand.

    The sky is tarnished
    copper leaves
    and the moon lives
    only to vanish.

    Near in the forest
    grey oaks float,
    looming like clouds
    in the mist.

    The sky is tarnished
    copper leaves
    and the moon lives
    only to vanish.

    Asthmatic crow
    and you wolves gaunt
    where the winds haunt,
    How is't with you?

    Unending bound
    of tedious land,
    and snow gleams down
    like shifting sand.

    Score

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
Rosebuds is an instrumental piece based on my song for alto and guitar As gleams the Rosebud
(my father's translation of a poem by the Renaissance poet Pierre de Ronsard)
the idea being the old theme of Gather ye rosebuds while you may ...
The old poet advises the object of his love to make the most of young life and he remembers his own youth with nostalgic regret.
As gleams the rose-bud in the month of May
In the first flush of youth and velvet flower
Rendering Heaven jealous of her colour
    Brimming with dawn tears at the break of day;

Within her petals love and grace both dwell,
Perfuming all the gardens and the trees.
Yet stricken by the rain or heat she dies,
Swooning away, with petals all unfurled.

And so it is, fresh in your tender years,
When earth and sky lauded your comeliness,
Fate struck you down, ashes alone are left.

In tender memory receive my tears
A sad libation to refresh these posies,
So that, alive or dead, you are but roses.

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
A quirky piece involving rhythmical bounces (especially 4/4 time mixed with 3-3-2 time) and bluesy chords.
The piece was originally intended as a setting for Prévert's poem Pour toi mon amour but the
melody took on a life of its own and the bunny rabbit won the race, jumping around a meadow ...

The original poem by Prévert is:

Je suis allé au marché aux oiseaux
    Et j'ai acheté des oiseaux
    Pour toi
    Mon amour

Je suis allé au marché aux fleurs
    Et j'ai acheté des fleurs
    Pour toi
    Mon amour

    Mon amour

    The words are as follows:

Dans les fluides abîmes de la nuit

(In the fluid abysses of the night)

    Les bruits venus d'ailleurs
    loin de nous inquiéter

    (Noises from elsewhere

    (Our deadened movements are lost
    in the flood of shadows)

    Nous cherchons à saisir
    l'errance irrationelle

Arrangement of Ariette Oubliée No 4 originally written for alto and guitar (also available on this site). The song is based on a poem by Paul Verlaine in which he imagines himself and his boyfriend Rimbaud as two innocent little girls

    Paul Verlaine

    [literal translation into English]
You see, you`ll have to forgive us a few things
Then we`ll be two happy little girls
And if our life is a bit sad at times
at least there will be two of us sobbing together, won`t there?

Oh sister souls that we are, wouldn`t we just mingle
Childish sweetness with our embarassed vows
To wander far from the world of adults
And forget our banishment in all our fresh innocence

Let`s be two children, two little girls
In love with nought and astonished by all
Going pale-faced down innocent tree-lined paths
Not even aware that they`ve been forgiven.

  • Fugue in A Minor for Oboe, English Horn & Guitar

    3:07

Johann Sebastian Bach was better known as a virtuoso organist than as a composer in his day. His sacred music, organ and choral works, and other instrumental music had an enthusiasm and seeming freedom that concealed immense rigor. Bach's use of counterpoint was brilliant and innovative, and the immense complexities of his compositional style -- which often included religious and numerological symbols that seem to fit perfectly together in a profound puzzle of special codes -- still amaze musicians today. Many consider him the greatest composer of all time.

In music, a fugue is a contrapuntal compositional technique in two or more voices, built on a subject (a musical theme) that is introduced at the beginning in imitation (repetition at different pitches) and which recurs frequently in the course of the composition. A fugue usually has three sections: an exposition, a development, and a final entry that contains the return of the subject in the fugue's tonic key. Some fugues have a recapitulation. In the Middle Ages, the term was widely used to denote any works in canonic style; by the Renaissance, it had come to denote specifically imitative works. Since the 17th century, the term fugue has described what is commonly regarded as the most fully developed procedure of imitative counterpoint.

Most fugues open with a short main theme, the subject, which then sounds successively in each voice (after the first voice is finished stating the subject, a second voice repeats the subject at a different pitch, and other voices repeat in the same way); when each voice has entered, the exposition is complete. This is often followed by a connecting passage, or episode, developed from previously heard material; further entries of the subject then are heard in related keys. Episodes (if applicable) and entries are usually alternated until the final entry of the subject, by which point the music has returned to the opening key, or tonic, which is often followed by closing material, the coda. In this sense, a fugue is a style of composition, rather than a fixed structure.

    103. A crazy scientist is turning the controllers of his interdimensional atmosphere radio. While the frequencies tend towards infinity and the overmodulation crashes portside, the channels are dancing a dance, merging the incompatible. Melting pot or bean stew? Power blackout - the machine has to warm up again, the photons are rejoicing and the soup kitchen is bubbling relaxedly. Here, a glow! There, a waft! But alas!, the pressure gets to high, the speakers melt away and fade and fadeand fadandfandfdndfndndfndndnndnn. Can you picture that? No? Then listen.
