    Feuer und Wasser and guitar

    2:48

    Score

Downloadable audio CD of all 19 pieces (Esprit de Cor)

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
This sequence and melody was inspired by a poem written by a friend called Otto Wanke,
who was going through the teenage angst of splitting up with the first girl he loved.
The title (Feuer und Wasser = Fire and Water) refers to the idea that these two elements are incompatible, but the music (in minor mode with occasional hints of Dorian) is a simple lament rather than a musical description of the elements in question.
The music was originally written as a song for alto voice with classical guitar accompaniment.
The poem is a somewhat resigned teenage-angst song of unrequited love:

    Ich muss mich damit abfinden
dass Feuer und Wasser nicht zusammen passen
Das Feuer das mit heller Flamme leuchtet
    das seine Umgebung anzünden möchte
    das knistert.
Das Wasser das gemächlich vor sich hinfliesst
das sich nur langsam erwärmen lässt,
    das sucht
    das sucht
    Ich muss mich damit abfinden
dass Feuer und Wasser nicht zusammen passen.
    © Otto Wanke

    My English version:

I must settle my mind on this
that fire and water do not go together
Hot fire whose great flames flare up so brightly
    which wants to set light
    to all things around it
    spits fiercely
Cool water smoothly flows ahead so slowly
and takes so long to warm up
    and seeps
    in search
    in search
I must settle my mind on this
that fire and water do not go together.

Instrumental duo based on my song on a poem written for me in Armenian by James Russell when he left London

    Vaghə toghem əskez:

Tomorrow I leave you: pointless vain passions
Already the plate of the stars spins down towards me
And the breeze whispers this lie:
    You need no love.

Dawn in the room for cor anglais and guitar

    4:16

    Score

Downloadable audio CD of all 19 pieces (Esprit de Cor)

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
Instrumental arrangement of my song based on my mother's poem Dawn in the Room
    The pale gold light
    creeps into my silent room
    touching my face
I know that you are here.

    Softly contours form
    as the colours
    take the place of grey

    Translucent gold hits the mirror
    and reaches my lonely bed.

Dispels the grey mist which lingers
    on the window pane
Deepens the image and I see you.

    Pale blond light
    where your hair once shone.

    Lonely shadow of my
    former self
    I languish here.

But then your dear voice calls
    with comfort, love
    and says
    I have not left,
    while your fond memories remain.
I think of you and you are here
    beside and within

    Your image fades
but you are still here in me.

    You must
    you must come back
    if only at dawn.

See through the tears of gold,
    you are here once more
    Your ghostly presence
    fills my poor heart,

    searching my mind
once more to be as one,

    here is your body
    so close to my own
    in this spectral world
    we share our thoughts.

My soul now quiet at last
    my yearnings on hold.

The golden glow brings me peace
and I might face another day

Ariette Oubliée No 4 for cor anglais and guitar

    3:08

    Score

Downloadable audio CD of all 19 pieces (Esprit de Cor)

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
Arrangement of Ariette Oubliée No 4 originally written for alto and guitar (also available on this site). The song is based on a poem by Paul Verlaine in which he imagines himself and his boyfriend Rimbaud as two innocent little girls

    Paul Verlaine

    [literal translation into English]
You see, you`ll have to forgive us a few things
Then we`ll be two happy little girls
And if our life is a bit sad at times
at least there will be two of us sobbing together, won`t there?

Oh sister souls that we are, wouldn`t we just mingle
Childish sweetness with our embarassed vows
To wander far from the world of adults
And forget our banishment in all our fresh innocence

Let`s be two children, two little girls
In love with nought and astonished by all
Going pale-faced down innocent tree-lined paths
Not even aware that they`ve been forgiven.

A forever kind of love and guitar

    4:43

    Score

Downloadable audio CD of all 19 pieces (Esprit de Cor)

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
Instrumental duo inspired by Neville Frenkiels' poem A forever kind of love
There is no explaining all the changes inside just one person's lifetime
too many kinds of pain don't even have a name.
There is no explaining the meaning of them all.
    Only questions ...
but I do believe the slowly changing colours of the seasons
clearly show how ev'ry thing in its turn must surrender
and all things overflow into for ever
An everlasting love, ev'rything ev'rything love

Rosebuds for cor anglais and guitar

    3:05

    Score

Downloadable audio CD of all 19 pieces (Esprit de Cor)

Performed by Ágnes Jakab (cor anglais) and András Csáki (guitar)
Rosebuds is an instrumental piece based on my song for alto and guitar As gleams the Rosebud
(my father's translation of a poem by the Renaissance poet Pierre de Ronsard)
the idea being the old theme of Gather ye rosebuds while you may ...
The old poet advises the object of his love to make the most of young life and he remembers his own youth with nostalgic regret.
As gleams the rose-bud in the month of May
In the first flush of youth and velvet flower
Rendering Heaven jealous of her colour
    Brimming with dawn tears at the break of day;

Within her petals love and grace both dwell,
Perfuming all the gardens and the trees.
Yet stricken by the rain or heat she dies,
Swooning away, with petals all unfurled.

And so it is, fresh in your tender years,
When earth and sky lauded your comeliness,
Fate struck you down, ashes alone are left.

In tender memory receive my tears
A sad libation to refresh these posies,
So that, alive or dead, you are but roses.
