Playlist of Fernhill (band)

  • Fernhill -- Helar Dryw

A haunting rendition of the Welsh folk song Hela'r Dryw (Hunting the Wren), which is based on a tradition found throughout the British Isles. The band is Welsh folk band Fernhill, though the track does not feature on any of the band's albums; instead it was only released on a couple of compilations, and was credited to the individual performers rather than the band (Julie Murphy, Andy Cutting, Ceri Rhys Matthews and Jonathan Shorland). The compilation I found it on was The Fairy Dance: Myth and Magic in Celtic Songs and Tunes on Beautiful Jo Records.

Below are the lyrics and English translation. Each verse follows the same pattern, so only the 1st verse is written out in full.

I am intrigued by the term the Never Beyond, which I assume is an obscure reference to God? Some versions replace this with the slightly more mundane everyone.

Ble rwyt ti'n mynd? meddai Rhisiart wrth Robin,
Ble rwyt ti'n mynd? meddai Dibyn wrth Dobyn,
Ble rwyt ti'n mynd? meddai John,
Ble rwyt ti'n mynd? meddai'r Nefar Biond

    Mynd tua'r coed, meddai ...

Be wnei di yno? meddai ...

    Hela'r dryw bach, meddai ...

    5. (repeat of 3)
Be wnei di yno? meddai ...

Lladd y dryw bach, meddai ...

    A'i hebrwng e gartref, meddai....

    Ceffyl a chert, meddai...

    Beth am ei fwyta? meddai....

    Cyllell a fforc, meddai...

    English translation:
Where are you going? said Richard to Robin
Where are you going? said Dibyn to Dobyn
Where are you going? said John
Where are you going? said the Never Beyond

Going to the woods, said ...

What will you do there? said ...

    Hunt the wren, said ...

    5. (repeat of 3)
What will you do there? said ...

    Kill the wren, said...

    And carry him home, said...

    A horse and cart, said...

How shall we eat him? said ...

A knife and fork, said ...

    * Correction! Morning, Morning was written by Tuli Kupferberg, not by Richie Havens, as I misstated on today's show. Apologies!

On Sunday, September 26 at 2pm EDT as we paid tribute to the Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1960s with an hour of songs, some familiar classics and some gems that deserve a dusting off. The energetic optimism of the place shines through in the timeless music created in that freewheelin' artist colony, an island of creativity in a sea of skyscrapers...Greenwich Village.

  • ASO BODO KONYE- EdelAkongu Ekodelele Eyperu

Edel'Akongu Ekodelele Eyperu singer, songwriter, guitarist, Uganda

Based on an interview by email with
    Sonja van Kerkhoff, 2002.
    Edel' died in December 2002.

Big Five consists of nine musicians and we play fusion, combining our traditional melodies and rhythms with modern arrangement and instruments.

We usually transfer a local instrument to the appropriate corresponding modern instrument.

For example a xylophone to a piano, a local tube fiddle to a violin. Although we also involve the local instruments on stage as rhythm drivers for authenticity. I play the akogo or thumb piano, the acoustic and electric guitar and sing in my local language Ateso. So we play both western and traditional instruments.

Our program is influenced by two of Uganda's traditional cultures. Juliet Ssesanga (lead singer and choreographs the traditional dances), Godfrey Lubulwa (keyboards and namunjoloba drum), and John Bosco Mayega (bass guitar and engalabi drum), are from Buganda, central Uganda, which is from the Bantu group of tribes, while I am from the Teso tribe, in the north-east, which is from the Nilo Hamitic group of tribes that originated from the horn of Africa.
The two cultures have radically different cultures and languages. The Kiganda music is percussion driven and show orientated with highly specialised dances. It is made of differently timed rhythm patterns bouncing off each other to produce a sophisticated rhythm. The music from Teso is more baladish and rocky with sweet melodies. It is played on a number of thumb pianos of varying sizes covering three octaves or so and is a sound around which the community parties and lay bare their hearts.
This gives our group two distinct faces which are clearly discernable when you listen to our first cd Echoes of Kampala. In the beginning it was destabilising as we struggled to merge the two faces into one, but now we have finally settled for the idea that two faces is richer than one, and can complement each other.

This is the background upon which the Big Five group operates. We were kind of brought together by our common dislike of the trend local contemporary music was taking. You can just hear third rate Jamaican, American, Congolese music twisting the local languages out of context. So anchored upon our traditional roots we are reaching out into the contemporary, which will enable us to express ourselves in the tone of today without destroying our roots. Our band's aim is in establishing a contemporary aspect to some of Uganda's beautiful music.

Then Sten Sandahl a producer for the Swedish Concert Institute came to Kampala looking for material both traditional and contemporary. With the traditional stuff that was easy, but then all the contemporary stuff had no relation at all with the traditional material. When he listened to us he decided to take us on and the result was our first CD Echoes of Kampala. We currently enjoy the status of the gateway to the music of Uganda. We have hosted two groups from England so far, Fernhill and the Katherine Tickel Band, we have also hosted Deishovida ( from Austria resulting in the Austrian tour we did in October 2001.

Arts Dialogue, November 2002, page 7.
Edel died in December 2002 in Kampala.

African Cultures in a time of change

...In 1989 Edel' won the contemporary class of the East African Music Festival, organised by the Councillors of Africa with his song, Children of Kampala. Two other festivals were also organised Western and Central Africa as well.
At the East African festival there were participants from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Malaysia. It is hoped that this will become a regular event.

Of his own work Edel' writes: I am currently engaged in marrying traditional African rhythms with western arrangement and facilities. I've been at it for the last eight years or so and it is only now that I begin to make head or tail of it all. It is a most exhilirating experience using Western arrangements to explore the hidden crevices of the mystic African rhythms. I play cabaret at one of the hotels in town with another person, more to make ends meet than anything else.
He is currently working on a demo tape of his own music and is also looking for funding for a project to make a documentary video, which aims to present contemporary and traditional urnal and rural aspects of Ugandan music, both as a form of support for the artists themselves as well as a general educational source...
Excerpt from the BAFA newsletter, April 1991, page 6.

  • Blueneck - Pneumothorax

    Album: Repetitions

In September 2011 Blueneck release Repetitions, their third album, on Denovali Records. The new LP is the follow-up to 2010's The Fallen Host (Stunning -- Rocksound, Fantastic... an intoxicating, all-consuming experience -- Classic Rock: Prog, Over time, I expect that this album will continue to be appealing, while many more glamorous and overhyped albums will disappear. - The Silent Ballet) and 2006's debut Scars of the Midwest. Though steeped in the trademark melancholy power of their former works, Repetitions resonates with new heights of emotional drama. From the butcher's knife-edge tension of strident opener 'Pneumothorax', past the cocooned confessional 'Barriers Down', to the cathartic windswept Americana of 'The Last Refuge', Repetitions makes a deliberate lunge for the emotional jugular. It's without doubt that this red-blooded output results from Repetitions' unusual recording process. Whereas the first two albums were constructed in Blueneck's reclusive studio deep in the farmlands of Somerset, this time the band made the deliberate decision to head to the city. Working with producer Mat Sampson in his Bink Bonk basement studios in Bristol, a recording session started that would eventually span an 18 month period, ending in June 2011. It wasn't just the surroundings that needed to change. Contrary to their previous approach, this time Sampson encouraged Blueneck to minimise digital trickery. The band deliberately embraced analogue tools, acoustic instruments and live performances. Much of Repetitions is recorded live as a band using vintage amplifiers, pedals and microphones, a vast array of ancient analogue synths and organs, not to mention the addition of authentic live upright piano, violin and cello. Blueneck will follow the release of Repetitions with an extensive European tour throughout October and November 2011.
