  • Emitt Rhodes - The Four Best Songs from EMITT RHODES

Currently unavailable on CD (unless you want to fork out $40.00 for a Japanese import), Emitt Rhodes's debut album is just too good to go unheard. Plus, the pops and cracks here only enhance the experience!

Every song on this album is a winner, but here are four that have struck a particular chord with me:

    1) Live till You Die
    2) You Should Be Ashamed
    3) Lullaby
    4) Fresh as a Daisy

Fresh as a Daisy was a minor hit for Rhodes, and today it's his best-known song alongside Lullaby (by virtue of the latter's inclusion in the soundtrack of Wes Anderson's THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS).

I found my copy of this great album in a record/vintage store in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

    #EmittRhodes #TheBeatles #QuedateEnCasa #PaulMcCartney

▶ We recently lost a great rock that we should all know, he received the nickname One Man Beatles. Composer, arranger, producer and multi-instrumentalist, beyond the acceptance of criticism the music industry enslaved him and failed to appreciate it. In this video beyond a review is an assessment of a great artist.

  • Poppermost - Lullabye

Originally a 1-minute song, Lullabye was written and performed in 1970 with only an acoustic guitar and one vocal by songwriter / singer / multi-instrumentalist / engineer Emitt Rhodes. Our Poppermost version of Lullabye was originally recorded in June 2020 as a tribute and present only for the ears of Mr Rhodes, and would have been accompanied by the following letter :
    - -
    Cheers Emitt,

In the 50 years since you released your debut album, the advent of computers has made it easy to go back in time. It's made it easier to catch all the music someone may have missed the first time around. I have to tell you that one of the joys I've had lately is diving into your back catalog of songs.

There are no words that I can use to describe the feelings I experience listening to your songs, especially that debut. The sound makes me come alive inside when I feel bad, like a good friend who's just dropped by when you needed one the most. When I am stuck for ideas in my own home studio, I let the sound of your music fill the room and inspiration hits me like a heatwave. If Emitt can create a sound THAT special, I can do that too, is always the thought.

The advent of computers also made it easier to find those people who you once thought were unreachable. I'm reaching out to you to say thanks for the great music and the inspiration. My band, Poppermost, has recorded a version of your song Lullabye that I would like to send to you (for your ears only). Originally an exercise in arranging the song for 3 voices (ala Crosby, Stills and Nash), I just wanted you to know that your music is alive in my head and heart and is a very important part of my world, and a constant inspiration. I only hope someday that you'll help man the studio when my band records a note-perfect version of that first album.

    With highest musical regards,
    Alex Oliver
    Huge Fan

In the hours following Mr. Rhodes' passing, we decided that if we could not share the present of Lullabye, re-imagined as a 3-part harmony piece (ala Crosby, Stills and Nash) with him, we would instead share it with everyone.

Cheers and a toast to Emitt - thank you, sir.
