Explanatory liner notes by record label ANTI-:

This song is from the perspective of a woman ashore, waiting for her sailor (or any sailor) to return home (with prize money). The lyrics are from the Napoleonic period. Some verses are the voice of a wife or sweetheart. The verse that compares sailors and soldiers is a well-known whore's ditty of the time.

  • Upside Down

    5:02

The full track name is “Upside Down: Double Lead Through/Highland Mary/Dear Tobacco” performed by Eliza Carthy and taken from the ‘Rough Music’ album. Eliza Carthy MBE is an English folk musician known for both singing and playing fiddle and accordian. She is the daughter of folk singer/guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson. She has collaborated with dozens of bands on numerous albums and has produced over ten of her own.

Whether performing a centuries-old ballad or a self-written song, her powerful, nuanced voice, fiercely beautiful fiddle playing and mesmerizing live performances have influenced a whole generation of young musicians.

You can hear more of Eliza's work on

Drums With Everything is a private music project - adding my own drum tracks into existing favourite folk songs. All drums and percussion are played on an extended TD-30 Roland digital drum kit, recorded on Wavepad and mixed on Mixpad. Each song in the project is completed within a day in order to keep things really fresh - so there will be a few slips and hiccups along the way.  Headphones recommended.

All songwriting and performing copyrights acknowledged. Hopefully, I have been sensitive to each song but any artists unhappy with these interpretations can request them to be removed.

  • Eliza Carthy Train Song

    3:58

Eliza Carthy sings the haunting and beautiful Train Song from her 2008 album Angels and Cigarettes

Last night when I saw him
    Last night last week
When I saw my lover with a flush in his cheek
I went up to the window and I held out my hand
He's a demon lover and a spirtitual man

But I think somebody will tell him
'Cos they think that he ought to know
I've been looking from my bedroom window and falling in love

I've been found out, what's my mother gonna say (x2)

I'm in trouble 'cos I've been watching
    Watching in your bedroom window
    It's the skin I'm catching
Maybe I'll see you around tomorrow

Well I seek him in candlelight
    Why do I seek

I can love his body and I don't have to speak
Well I stood by his shoulder and I blew on his face
In his eyes were the pastures of a much greener place

But I think that stitches will mend him
And his feet choose a path that they know
Looking from his bedroom window and falling in love

I've been found out, what's my mother gonna say
But i was dragged down to a level of dismay

I'm in trouble 'cos I've been watching
    Watching from your bedroom window
    That's the train I'm catching
And I don't want to see you alone no more
