    3:40

    Anchor is available now ►

The remarkable new album, ‘Anchor,’ produced by Neill MacColl and Kate St. John, was recorded in their home town of Robin Hood’s Bay and features an eclectic and beguiling collection of both traditional and contemporary songs. Amongst the 11 tracks we find Norma leading on Tom Waits’ ‘Strange Weather’ and ‘The Beast in Me’ by Nick Lowe. Trad Arr. ‘The Elfin Knight’ sees Eliza supported by Norma, Martin and extended family, ‘Lost in the Stars’ is a wonderful take on the Kurt Weill classic, while ‘Shanty of the Whale’, also featuring guest vocals of Martin Carthy, is a track written by KT Tunstall inspired by the singing of the Watersons, now come full circle in mutual respect and admiration.

The songs represented on this album all recall influences and cherished friends of the extended Waterson/Carthy family, from New Mexican friends Bayou Seco and the Irish traditional singer Margaret Barry to legendary American ballad singer Helen Schneyer; not to mention the MacColl/Seeger family themselves who are represented in The Elfin Night, a song collected by Ewan and Peggy in the 1950s. The album title ‘Anchor,’ comes from a sailor’s hymn that would have been sung in the Congo chapel itself, even possibly played on the very organ you hear on the recording. It represents being rooted in love and family whatever may occur, which is what this family has always been about.

No matter what the origin, Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy bring songs to life with their great musicality and wonderfully compassionate voices in a way that perhaps only this mother and daughter can.

Explanatory liner notes by record label ANTI-:

This song is from the perspective of a woman ashore, waiting for her sailor (or any sailor) to return home (with prize money). The lyrics are from the Napoleonic period. Some verses are the voice of a wife or sweetheart. The verse that compares sailors and soldiers is a well-known whore's ditty of the time.

One of the highlights of my music career was joining Eliza Carthy's band in 2013. I love playing with Eliza - she's got a really infectious energy on stage that can really raise your performance. Since joining her band I've been involved in various other projects of hers. In the summer of 2018 she wrote some music for a production of The Two Noble Kinsmen at Shakespeares Globe Theatre in London. I was asked to play guitar, banjo, bones and sing in the choruses of the fabulous music she put together for it. This set is a mish mash of two things from that show.

  • Eliza Carthy and the Restitute - Black Queen Isolation Creation #6

    4:04

A couple of weeks ago I took on the unenviable task of editing together 7 bits of video from my very good friends and band mates Eliza Carthy, Saul Rose, Willie Molleson, Ben Somers and Ben Seal. The plan was simple - put together a video for the 2nd Folk on Foot Front Room Festival. It took me pretty much 4 hours a day for about 5 days to get it all together, mix it, edit it (where possible), colour balance, and splice it all together to the best of my abilities. I'm quite pleased how it turned out considering it was the first video I've made like this.

We were meant to be on tour when all this Covid 19 shit kicked off. So if you fancy donating to our Ko Fi that would be fab:

  • Eliza Carthy & Salsa Celtica - Grey Gallito

    5:08

Eliza Carthy joined up with the excellent Salsa Celtica for this laid back, sexy, rendition of Grey Gallito, Latin version of a traditional English folk song.

    Lyrics:

I must be going, no longer staying,
The burning Thames I have to cross.
Oh, I must be guided without a stumble
Into the arms of my dear lass.

And when he came to his true love's window,
He knelt down gently on a stone,
And it's through a pane he whispered slowly:
My dear girl, are you alone?

She rose her head from her down-soft pillow,
And snowy were her milk-white breasts,
Saying: Who's there, who's there at my bedroom window,
Disturbing me from my long night's rest?

So this young girl rose and put on her clothing,
So swift she's let her true love in.
And it's there they kissed and embraced each other
Through that long night they lay as one.

    No le cantes, ahora gallito
No le cantes, ahora, no (x4)

Then it's: Willy dear, oh dearest Willy,
Where's your colour you'd some time ago?
O Mary dear, the clay has changed me
And I'm but the ghost of your Willy, oh.

Then it's cock, oh cock, oh handsome cockerel,
I pray you not crow before it is day,
And your wings I'll make of the very first beaten gold,
Your comb I will make of the silver grey.

    No le cantes, ahora gallito
No le cantes, ahora, no (x2)

But the cock it crew, and it crew so fully.
It crew three hours before it was day.
And before it was day, my love had to go away,
Not by the light of the moon or the light of day.

    No le cantes, ahora gallito
No le cantes, ahora, no (x2)

Then it's Willie dear, oh dearest Willie,
Whenever shall I see you again?
When the fish they fly, love, and the sea runs dry, love,
And the rocks they melt in the heat of the sun.

    2:03

Hmm...Well, this may seem irreverent, but...it's been a really long day. Whitby Abbey is one of the original seats of Christianity in the UK, so it seemed appropriate to sing this Chrsitian/Pagan May song in May at the Abbey. With Vikings.

A few hours after Anis shot this, we rolled up to our gig and Eliza shut her hand in the van door, breaking a finger rather badly in two places. We did the gig anyway, despite the obvious mental stress I was experiencing, and...now we're going to go do more gigs. After Eliza gets her finger put back together in the morning.

Thanks to our new friend John the Viking! (Dude, are you on facebook?)

  • The Gallant Hussar

    4:43

The Gallant Hussar (Eliza Carthy) is taken from the 'Wayward Daughter' album. Eliza Carthy MBE is an English folk musician known for both singing and playing fiddle and accordian. She is the daughter of folk singer/guitarist Martin Carthy and singer Norma Waterson. She has collaborated with dozens of bands on numerous albums and has produced over ten of her own. I should credit the excellent Mattie Foulds for the underlying drum track as my additions are largely percussion.

You can hear more of Eliza's work on

Drums With Everything is a private music project - adding my own drum tracks into existing favourite folk songs. All drums and percussion are played on an extended TD-30 Roland digital drum kit, recorded on Wavepad and mixed on Mixpad. Each song in the project is completed within a day in order to keep things really fresh - so there will be a few slips and hiccups along the way.  Headphones recommended.

All songwriting and performing copyrights acknowledged. Hopefully, I have been sensitive to each song but any artists unhappy with these interpretations can request them to be removed.
