  • Chicago: End of the Line Part 1

One year ago LND Productions sponsored a documentary about our neighborhood in Chicago. My Oldest brother was an artist with LND productions and with a camera and a few connections in the old neighborhood; he drove to Chicagos Jungle to start filming. Originally everyone was completely cooperative with my brother, who was perceived as an out of Towner who didn't know the locals or the real story about the neghborhood. The cooperation from city officials and law enforcement began to slip, and eventually turned to resistance once it became clear that my brother was actually a local that wanted to get the locals perspective of what was happening in and to the neighborhood.
Chicago is currently a war zone, and The Jungle has been part of the front lines of a war between the locals and officials for over a decade. Since shooting this film, my middle brother was arrested on trumped up charges, and my oldest brother has been bankrupted and is now in hiding on separate charges. LND Productions is no longer in operations, and film negotiations have ceased. I have all of their footage and even though I am inexperienced with editing, I believe the people who participated in this film deserve to have their story told. I feel that this is a story no one wants you to hear, but this is the realest story never told.
The following story is a true story that I honestly believe the Chicago Police don't want you to hear. The neighborhood known as the jungle has a unique story, and for the participants protection, all identities will be concealed.

An Economy of Means is a kind of companion piece to my percussion trio An Index of Possibility. While Index uses a wide range of materials—glass, metal, wood, ceramic, drums, toys, found objects—to create music that flows freely between distinctive and colorful spaces, An Economy of Means does the opposite, deliberately taking one instrument and making the most of limited resources. With a few simple preparations—tin foil, a manilla folder—and canny use of the vibraphone’s natural colors, the piece traverses a vast and varied terrain, as broad and ambitious as the trio but in a narrower, more focused context. Set in six movements, the nearly thirty-minute piece doesn’t have a specific narrative. Even so, there is always a sense of motion, of drifting from space to space, with little dramas unfolding along the way. Commissioned by Doug Perkins and a consortium of alumni from the Chosen Vale Summer Percussion Seminar, the piece reflects the infectious spirit of friendship and collaboration so strongly felt at Chosen Vale.

Celebrated for his “smart, appealing works” (The New Yorker), Robert Honstein is a composer of orchestral, chamber, and vocal music. His works have been performed throughout the world by leading ensembles such as the Albany Symphony Orchestra, Eighth Blackbird, Third Angle New Music, Ensemble Dal Niente, the Mivos quartet, the Del Sol Quartet, Present Music, New Morse Code and Hub New Music, among others. He has received an Aaron Copland Award, multiple ASCAP awards and honors from the Barlow Foundation, Carnegie Hall, and New Music USA. He has also received residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Copland House, the Bang on a Can Summer Institute, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Robert is a founding member of the New York based composer collective Sleeping Giant. His debut album ‘RE: You’ was released by New Focus Recordings in 2014 and his second album, a collaboration with the Sebastians was released in 2015. In 2016 Cedille records released Sleeping Giant’s collaboration with Eighth Blackbird, ‘Hand Eye’, to critical acclaim. His most recent Album, An Economy of Means, was released on New Focus Recordings in 2018. Upcoming commissions include a percussion concerto for Colin Currie and the Albany Symphony and new works for No Exit New Music Ensemble and percussionist Mike Compitello. Currently he serves as composition faculty and program manager at NYU Steinhardt.

Doug Perkins specializes in new works for percussion as a chamber musician and soloist. His performances have been described as “terrific, wide-awake and strikingly entertaining” by the Boston Globe and he has been declared a “percussion virtuoso ” by The New York Times. Over the last 15 years, Doug has commissioned and premiered over 100 pieces works and with such composers as David Lang, Steve Reich, Paul Lansky, John Luther Adams, Nathan Davis, Larry Polansky, Christian Wolff, Glenn Kotche, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Tristan Perich. He founded the percussion quartet So Percussion and the Meehan/ Perkins Duo, and performs regularly with Signal, eighth blackbird, the Chicago Symphony’s MusicNOW, and others.

Doug’s critically acclaimed recordings as a soloist, conductor, producer, and member of the Meehan/ Perkins Duo and So Percussion can be heard on the Bridge, Cantaloupe, Harmonia Mundi, New Focus, and New World labels. They have been called “brilliant” by the New York Times and named to numerous Top10 of the Year lists. Doug is presently on the percussion faculty at the Boston Conservatory. He produced John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit, named one of 2013’s top records by NPR, The New York Times, the Boston Globe, the New Yorker, New Music Box, and Time Out New York. He is also the Director and founder of the Chosen Vale International Percussion Seminar. Doug received his Bachelor’s degree from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Masters and Artist Diploma degrees from Yale University, and his Doctorate from Stony Brook University. His principal percussion teachers were Jack DiIanni, Jim Culley, and Robert Van Sice.

Elise is the executive director of the Chicago social enterprise Rebuilding Exchange.

Waste is a valuable asset in the wrong place, at the wrong time. But in order to create real change and find valuable reuse opportunities, we have to first understand how the current waste systems work and understand our cultural and societal relationships to the concept of waste. @elisezelechowsk

  • Chicago to Hawaii and Back

Do you have any pictures or video that you've taken from an airplane?

For me, I shot video for almost every takeoff of our vacation to Hawaii, and I decided to sing to them because, well, it just seemed like something to do.

Our trip started in Chicago at O'Hare Airport and we flew to San Francisco for a layover. Then came the over the ocean flight from San Francisco to Kona on the Big Island. After hanging on the Big Island it was time for our trip to Kauai, but not before a layover. With that we had the Hilo to Honolulu trip, then the Honolulu to Lihue on Kauai.

Kauai was a blast, I missed the video from Lihue to Honolulu, but we had one more leg, from Honolulu to Chicago.

I hope you enjoyed today’s song! For more subscribe to my YouTube channel:

    But not in the Godhead
And to make Himself one with man

  • Lehárs THE MERRY WIDOW at Lyric Opera of Chicago November 14 through December 13

Beautiful Hanna’s late husband has left her a very rich woman. In fact, she’s so rich that the economy of her homeland depends on her marrying a local — so the ambassador springs into action with the help of his wife (a former cancan girl) to find Hanna the right husband. But it’s a tricky affair because the wily widow already has someone in mind: Count Danilo, an old flame, who has no intention of giving up bachelorhood. He’s got a bevy of beauties delighted to keep him happy with no strings attached. Rendezvous are rampant. Complications abound. Hanna ultimately gets her man as Lehár’s unforgettable tunes bubble happily along. Susan Stroman, one of Broadway’s hottest directors, leads Lyric’s blockbuster cast, featuring the star power of Renée Fleming, Nicole Cabell, and Thomas Hampson in an “eyepopping production...breathtaking to look at and a pleasure to hear.” Huffington Post

  • Chicago - It Better End Soon Main Part

    Hey, everybody
    Won't you just look around
    Can't anybody see?
    Just what's going down
    Can't you take the time?
    Just to feel
Just to feel what is real
    If you do
Then you'll see that we got a raw deal
    They're killing everybody
    They're killing me and you
    They're fighting and killing everybody
    I wish it weren't true
They say we got to make war
    Or the economy will fall
    But if we don't stop
We won't be around no more
    They're ruining this world
    For you and me
    The big heads of state
    Won't let us be free
    They made the rules once
    But it didn't work out
    Now we must try again
    Before they kill us off
    No more dying!
    No more killing
    No more dying
    No more fighting
    We don't want to die
No, we don't want to die
    Please let's change it all
    Please let's make it all
    Good for the present
    And better for the future
    Let's just love one another
Let's show peace for each other
    We can make it happen
    Let's just make it happen
    We can change this world
    Please let's change this world
Please let's make it happen for our children
    For our women
    Change the world
    Please make it happen
    Come on
    Come on
    Come on
    It's up to me
    It's up to you
Come on let's do it now
    Do it now

    Can't stand it no more
    The people cheating
    Burning each other
    They know it ain't right
    How can it be right?

Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.

  • A380 Lufthansa review. Los Angeles - Munich. April 29, 2018 economy

Just an amateur reviewing Lufthansa A380 for fun. I love airplanes...of course my wife and kids first lol. Twas a long flight, about 11 hours. I didn't put any background music because personally don't need any. Just the natural sound of the plane and babies crying lol. This trip was with my wife, my 14th month old son and sister on the way to italy to see Pope Francis as part of our pilgrimage and what a pilgrimage it was! Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the neocatecumenal way originating in Spain and currently now in over 130 countries! During our meeting with Pope Francis, he sent off over 20 missionary families (missio adjentes) I believe that's the correct spelling, to evangelize the peripheries of rome and rebuild the catholic faith! Not here to convert but expressing my gratitude to see faith in action! Aloha! God bless

  • Musicplus: Hybrid Business Models & the New Economy

Hybrid Business Models & the New Economy is programming from Musicplus: Skill Building for Musicians. Recorded 5/16/10 at East Bay Community Foundation in Oakland, CA.

It is no surprise that today's musician wears many hats. In addition to being performers and composers, we are often serving as our own managers, booking agents, publicists, and promoters. Additionally, we serve many roles as representatives of our communities -- as creators, ambassadors, and catalysts for change. On what revenue streams are today's creators depending? What are the tools, networks, funding sources, and organizations that sustain our work? An artist-driven panel will discuss hybrid business models and what's working in today's economy.
