Elise is the executive director of the Chicago social enterprise Rebuilding Exchange.

Waste is a valuable asset in the wrong place, at the wrong time. But in order to create real change and find valuable reuse opportunities, we have to first understand how the current waste systems work and understand our cultural and societal relationships to the concept of waste. @elisezelechowsk

An Economy of Means is a kind of companion piece to my percussion trio An Index of Possibility. While Index uses a wide range of materials—glass, metal, wood, ceramic, drums, toys, found objects—to create music that flows freely between distinctive and colorful spaces, An Economy of Means does the opposite, deliberately taking one instrument and making the most of limited resources. With a few simple preparations—tin foil, a manilla folder—and canny use of the vibraphone’s natural colors, the piece traverses a vast and varied terrain, as broad and ambitious as the trio but in a narrower, more focused context. Set in six movements, the nearly thirty-minute piece doesn’t have a specific narrative. Even so, there is always a sense of motion, of drifting from space to space, with little dramas unfolding along the way. Commissioned by Doug Perkins and a consortium of alumni from the Chosen Vale Summer Percussion Seminar, the piece reflects the infectious spirit of friendship and collaboration so strongly felt at Chosen Vale.

    Chocolate Rain

    Chocolate Rain
Some stay dry and others feel the pain
    Chocolate Rain
A baby born will die before the sin

    Chocolate Rain
The school books say it can't be here again
    Chocolate Rain
The prisons make you wonder where it went

    Chocolate Rain
Build a tent and say the world is dry
    Chocolate Rain
Zoom the camera out and see the lie

    Chocolate Rain
    Forecast to be falling yesterday
    Chocolate Rain
Only in the past is what they say

    Chocolate Rain
    Raised your neighborhood insurance rates
    Chocolate Rain
Makes us happy 'livin in a gate

    Chocolate Rain
Made me cross the street the other day
    Chocolate Rain
Made you turn your head the other way

    (Chorus)
    Chocolate Rain
History quickly crashing through your veins
    Chocolate Rain
Using you to fall back down again
    [Repeat]

    Chocolate Rain
    Seldom mentioned on the radio
    Chocolate Rain
Its the fear your leaders call control

    Chocolate Rain
Worse than swearing worse than calling names
    Chocolate Rain
Say it publicly and you're insane

    Chocolate Rain
No one wants to hear about it now
    Chocolate Rain
Wish real hard it goes away somehow

    Chocolate Rain
Makes the best of friends begin to fight
    Chocolate Rain
But did they know each other in the light?

    Chocolate Rain
    Every February washed away
    Chocolate Rain
    Stays behind as colors celebrate

    Chocolate Rain
The same crime has a higher price to pay
    chocolate Rain
The judge and jury swear it's not the face

    (Chorus)

    Chocolate Rain
    Dirty secrets of economy
    Chocolate Rain
    Turns that body into GDP

    Chocolate Rain
The bell curve blames the baby's DNA
    Chocolate Rain
But test scores are how much the parents make

    Chocolate Rain
'Flippin cars in France the other night
    Chocolate Rain
Cleans the sewers out beneath Mumbai

    Chocolate Rain
'Cross the world and back its all the same
    Chocolate Rain
Angels cry and shake their heads in shame

    Chocolate Rain
Lifts the ark of paradise in sin
    Chocolate Rain
Which part do you think you're 'livin in?

    Chocolate Rain
More than 'marchin more than passing law
    Chocolate Rain
Remake how we got to where we are.

    59:44

Hybrid Business Models & the New Economy is programming from Musicplus: Skill Building for Musicians. Recorded 5/16/10 at East Bay Community Foundation in Oakland, CA.

It is no surprise that today's musician wears many hats. In addition to being performers and composers, we are often serving as our own managers, booking agents, publicists, and promoters. Additionally, we serve many roles as representatives of our communities -- as creators, ambassadors, and catalysts for change. On what revenue streams are today's creators depending? What are the tools, networks, funding sources, and organizations that sustain our work? An artist-driven panel will discuss hybrid business models and what's working in today's economy.

Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his YouTube channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

In part five of our interview series with Richard Hawley he sits down with his beloved circa 1936 Gibson L-Century.

Built between 1933 and 1941, it was made in conjunction with the Chicago-held World’s Fair that was commemorating the “Century of Progress”, an attempt to kick-start the economy during the crisis of the Great Depression.

Hawley acquired the guitar via his neighbour and friend Martin Simpson who helped him on his journey to find a guitar that was as good as my Dad's old J-200 that got stolen.

  • Broken Vessel

    4:46

This is track 1 from the 1971 album Faith In Action.
    Lead by Mother Jackson
    Organist: Elnora Jones
    Written by Andraé Crouch
On January 11, 1895, Bishop H. W. Goldsberry's legacy of faith began with his birth in Arkansas and continued to manifest itself through him as he migrated to Chicago. As a boy, young Harry learned to be generous and empathetic toward the welfare of others. He learned faithfulness and consistency of conduct. He exemplified and possessed the greatest attribute: Faith in God and his Word. It was upon these Godly characteristics, that the foundation was laid for the birth of Faith Temple Church of God In Christ. Many missions, churches and ministres, both nationally and internationally began through the ministry and life of Bishop Goldsberry.

It was the desire of Bishop Goldsberry to establish a church built on the foundation of Faith in God, prayer and fasting. Bishop Goldsberry, the son of a minister, accepted Christ at the tender age of eight years old. At sixty years of age, a time in which many retire, God propelled the ministry of Dad Goldsberry and placed it upon his heart to establish the FAITH TEMPLE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST.

The first church service was held in the home of a chartered church member, Sister Louise Winfree, on March 7, 1955. The first church building was located at 6211 S. Wentworth, Chicago, Illinois. As God continued to bless the ministry, the congregation later moved to 6810 S. Wentworth and in 1957 purchased a building at 7032 S. Wentworth. While the Faith ministry grew, Dad Goldsberry felt the need to purchase a larger building for God's people and by faith he claimed our present location, 7158 South Peoria, Chicago, Illinois 60621. After moving into this lovely edifice, church membership grew to over two thousand! In 1970 the church mortgage was burned with a saving in interest of more than $123,000.00.

Bishop Goldsberry's desire to bring the message of faith to a dying world often led him to foreign soil. Dad Goldsberry and the deliverance team has traveled to Ghana West Africa, Honduras, the Virgin Islands, South America and a host of other countries attempting to reach souls for Christ. The National Church of God In Christ (Memphis,Tennessee) recognized the hand of God in the ministry of Dad Goldsberry. In 1966, the late senior Bishop O.T. Jones appointed Bishop Goldsberry to the office of bishop. As the founder of the Sixth Jurisdiction, Illinois Churches of God In Christ, Bishop Goldsberry was the overseer of over 40 churches in the Chicago and Illinois area. In addition, Bishop served as Vice-President of the Church of God In Christ Missions Department and Chaplain to the Board of Bishops.

On December 3, 1984, at 89 years of age, God looked upon the labor of our founder, stating , Well done my good and faithful servant, calling him home.

    17:45

  • Creedence Clearwater Revival - Keep On Chooglin

    7:46

Creedence Clearwater Revival is undeniably one of the greatest rock bands of all time, with an instantly recognizable, raw, bayou sound, popularized in songs like Proud Mary and Green River”. Since their formation in the 1960s, CCR has sold over 50 million records, while their songs remain in heavy rotation on the radio.

Though the band only released 7 studio albums in their too-short career, Creedence had an astonishing track record: eight consecutive gold singles (Proud Mary, Bad Moon Rising, Green River, Down on the Corner, Who'll Stop the Rain, Up Around the Bend, Lookin' Out My Back Door, Have You Ever Seen the Rain?) and eight consecutive gold albums. With music that sounds as fresh and compelling today as it did 30 years ago, CCR is one of a handful of bands whose entire body of work has attained true classic status.

  • Lyric Opera presents Lehárs THE MERRY WIDOW. November 14 – December 13

    16

Beautiful Hanna’s late husband has left her a very rich woman. In fact, she’s so rich that the economy of her homeland depends on her marrying a local — so the ambassador springs into action with the help of his wife (a former cancan girl) to find Hanna the right husband. But it’s a tricky affair because the wily widow already has someone in mind: Count Danilo, an old flame, who has no intention of giving up bachelorhood. He’s got a bevy of beauties delighted to keep him happy with no strings attached. Rendezvous are rampant. Complications abound. Hanna ultimately gets her man as Lehár’s unforgettable tunes bubble happily along.

Susan Stroman, one of Broadway’s hottest directors, leads Lyric’s blockbuster cast, featuring the star power of Renée Fleming, Nicole Cabell, and Thomas Hampson in an “eyepopping production...breathtaking to look at and a pleasure to hear.” Huffington Post

  • Bunting Guitars | CME Gear Demo | Shelby Pollard

    5:57

#ShelbyPollard shows off the brand new to CME, Bunting Guitars!

The Melody Queen is an offset guitar that can go from sweet cleans that cut through the mix to explosive fuzzed out bliss. In all cases, the Melody Queen reigns supreme!

Let your new queen take you on a trip of exploration – From Surf to Grunge to Indie to Experimental – Wherever your flow leads you, just remain loyal to your Queen and you’ll be rewarded with glorious, inspiring tones.

The Melody Queen features some great hardware: A Mastery offset bridge, which is without a doubt the best on the market. A Duesenberg Tremolo tailpiece – this has the perfect style and functionality and offers some great improvements over its ancestor. Last is the locking Gotoh tuners – an excellent combination of vintage looks with modern benefits.

The FB version cooks up a different flavor of offset sound. This is a Humbucker that comes close to a single coil tone, but with some added chime and earlier breakup. Firebird pickups use a blade magnet to get their unique sound – this is not your dad’s PAF sound! These pickups shine in the Melody Queen.

Alice EP is the essence of Rock’n’roll – A cheeky short scale guitar that rocks hard! Its 50’s inspired look and specs is a shout back to a time when all you needed were 6 strings, a pickup and a small amp in your parents’ garage to deliver the next big riff!

With Alice EP we wanted a guitar that delivers fierce Rock’n’roll tones – at our most affordable price range. Alice EP is based on a Jr. style guitar in tonewoods and pickup but comes in a shorter scale length of 24.5″. The short scale gives you looser strings, that means easier playing and you can use heavier gauge strings to get a bigger sound while still retaining great playability

The Alice EP is a bolt-on neck guitar with a single P-90 pickup. A ‘T’ style half bridge, brass saddles and strings through body design are used for a sweet midrange bite and a hint of twang.

Spiro is a slab offset body with P-90 growl. A rock and blues guitar designed to look classic and familiar but with its own original vibe.

Spiro was our first original model.

Spiro was designed with the 50’s Junior tones in mind. What we feel is missing in modern takes on this design is a lightweight Honduran Mahogany body – it’s just not available today as it was back then. We use Spanish Cedar as our body wood. Spanish Cedar is a relative of Honduran Mahogany and they share a similarity in character as tonewoods. It’s got the right weight and tone as was used in the ’50s.

Spiro has a bolt on neck and wraparound bridge. These features give you more attack, punch and note separation which compliments the Spanish Cedar body and P-90 combo.
