DORIS TROY 1963, WHAT,CHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT: LYRICS

    Our love yeah
Is slowly going on the rocks now yeah yeah yeah
    Tell me, tell me baby
    Whatcha gonna do 'bout it
    Whatcha gonna do 'bout it
    Our love yeah
Is in double jeopardy yeah yeah yeah yeah
    Show me, show me sugar-pie
    Whatcha gonna do 'bout it
    Whatcha gonna do 'bout it
You know I try to keep you satisfied
    But you just won't comprehend
And if you keep on doin', doin' what you're doin'
You know our love will surely end
Don't you know that our love yeah
Is slowly going on the rocks now yeah yeah yeah yeah
    Tell me, tell me baby
    Whatcha gonna do 'bout it
    Whatcha gonna do 'bout it
You know I try to keep you satisfied
    But you just won't comprehend
And if you keep on doin', doin' what you're doin'
You know our love will surely end
Don't you know that our love yeah yeah yeah
Is slowly going on the rocks now yeah yeah yeah yeah
    Tell me, tell me baby
    Whatcha gonna do 'bout it
    Whatcha gonna do 'bout it
Oh tell me, tell me baby

  • Doris Troy - Ill Do Anything

    3:08

Doris Troy was suffering from emphysema when we tried to film her for our Strange World Of Northern Soul mega-documentary in late 1998, and was so ill that she went into hospital at the time we were due to film in New York. Then, in early 1999, she was determined to do it, and was temporarily well enough to re-record the classic Northern Soul anthem, I'll Do Anything, and to film this oh so priceless performance at her house. She was a rarity in the early sixties - a singer who wrote her own material. She was always at the cutting edge. One of the earliest Soul divas, on Atlantic before Aretha, and recording with Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff years before the heady days of the Philadelphia sound. In 1963, while working as an usherette at Harlem's Apollo, Doris was spotted by James Brown and was on her way to greatness. A short stint as one half of Jay & Dee, was followed by her classic Just One Look (No.10 for 8 weeks in the US in 1963), later covered in the UK by The Hollies. This was followed by the great Whatcha Gonna Do About It (No. 37 for 7 weeks in the UK in 1964 and No. 38 for 5 weeks in the UK in 1965). This success in Britain prompted Doris to try her luck there, adding her unique sound to Dusty Springfield's classic recordings In the Middle of Nowhere and Little by Little. In 1969 The Beatles signed her to their Apple label, as an artist, writer and producer! Those sessions featured Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, Leon Russell & Ringo Starr, among others. While gaining respect for the album, sales were disappointing; but Doris carried on regardless. She recorded a live Gospel album at London's Rainbow Theatre in 1971 for Polydor. 1974 saw Doris in the studio again, for People Records, working with reggae producer Dandy Livingstone on the album Stretchin' Out. In the years that followed, she returned to the States, recording the musical Mama I Want to Sing. Becoming the highest grossing off-Broadway show ever, Mama was the story of Doris's life, with a liberal sprinkling of Gospel, and of course Just One Look. Since it's inception in 1981, the show has packed 'em in all over the world - Greece, Japan, Switzerland, Egypt, and earning an Olivier Awards nomination in London's West End, with a cast that included Chaka Khan & Deniece Williams. Doris played her own mother in the production. In the fall of 1999 Doris appeared in a new show Gospel Is...! at the Williams Lafayette Institute for the Arts, 7th. Avenue @ 131st Street, Harlem, NYC., described by one reviewer as The Mama for the Millennium. Doris died in her sleep on February 16, 2004, in Las Vegas. She had been suffering from emphysema for some years. Listen and watch this great video in memory of her.

  • Doris Troy - Get Back

    3:11

Get Back is a song by The Beatles, written primarily by Paul McCartney and formally attributed to Lennon/McCartney. The song was originally released as a single on 11 April 1969 and credited to The Beatles with Billy Preston.
Soul singer Doris Troy with assistance from George Harrison, recorded the song as the b-side of her version of the folk song Jacob's Ladder on the Beatles' own Apple label.

    Lyrics:

    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it couldn't last
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
    For some California grass
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman
    But she was another man
All the girls around her say she's got it coming
But she gets it while she can
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it couldn't last
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
    For some California grass
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged

  • Just One Look - Doris Troy & Linda Ronstadt

    2:41

Just One Look is a song co-written by American R&B singers Doris Troy and Gregory Carroll. The recording by Doris Troy was a hit in 1963, and personnel on the song included Horace Ott on Piano, Snags Allen on guitar, Barney Richmond on bass and Bruno Carr on drums.
It was also released as a single from Linda Roinstadt's 1978 album, Living In The U.S.A.. The personnel were Linda Ronstadt -- vocals, Dan Dugmore on electric & steel guitars, Waddy Wachtel on electric guitar, Don Grolnick on piano, Kenny Edwards on Bass, Russ Kunkel on drums. Also: Peter Asher on cowbell, tambourine, background vocals and Andrew Gold, Pat Henderson, Sherlie Matthews, David Lasley, Arnold McCuller - background vocals
This video is a combination of the two audio tracks, recorded 15 years apart, joined together. The texture is a little rough because Doris' original had a shuffle feel that was a bit behind the beat and Linda's is more on the beat but the vocals sound surprisingly good together.

  • Doris Troy - Aint That Cute

    3:49

Ain't That Cute, by Doris Troy. Released by Apple Records.

    Lyrics:

Some folks want to be big wheels,
And stand up ten foot tall
But you get wheels that don't have no spokes,
Don't really stand up at all

Each one leanin' on the other,
    Dependin' in every way
    Needin' each other,
    And bleedin' each other,
And doin' it for the pay

    Ain't that cute, baby?
    Ain't that cute?

    Witness chaos all around you,
    Violence on TV.
You want the news, then check your daily newspaper,
    All about you and me

Each one steppin' on the other,
    Walk all over me,
    Stonin' each other,
    And phonin' each other,
And bringin' their horse to te-ee-ee-ea

    Ain't that cute, baby?
    Now ain't that cute?
Ain't it cute the way they smile at me,
With their foot inside my door?
Ain't it sweet the way they know me so well,
That they sleep around my floor?

Some folks scrapin' on the bottom,
    Think they're at the top.
While them up there don't feel hardly nowhere,
    Don't get time to stop.

Each one swarmin' on the other,
    Tryin' to find their legs,
    Doin' it all night,
    Gettin' their chops rights,
And pullin' out all their tricks.

    Ain't that cute, baby?
    Ain't that cute?
    Ain't that cute baby?
    Ain't that cute?
    Ain't that cute, baby?
    Ain't that cute?
    Ain't that cute baby?
    Ain't that cute?
    Ain't that cute baby?
    Ain't that cute?

  • Doris Troy Just One Look

    2:34

Born Doris Higginsen, Doris changed her last name to Payne to honor her grandmother. Her career began as a songwriter and evolved into being a back-up singer. She was an original member of the Sweet Inspirations which also included Cissy Houston and Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick. She co-wrote Just One Look with Gregory Carroll and recorded a demo for Atlantic records. After Atlantic Records heard the demo, they decided not to re-record it and released the demo. The song spent 14 weeks on the Hot 100 and peaked at #10. It ended 1963 as the #81 song of the year. It was recorded using Doris' stage name of Troy.

It's taking you back to the sunny days and star-filled nights of Southern California summer in the sixties!

  • Doris Troy Just One Look

    2:34

One of the best songs from the summer of 1963 is Just One Look by Doris Troy. Written by Doris Troy (Payne) and Gregory Carroll, it was released in May 1963 on Atlantic Records and peaked at # 3 in the Billboard R&B chart & #10 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This is what Doris said in an interview concerning the song. I'd written 'Just One Look' and needed to make a demo. Well the demo got made, and it was the demo that was released. ... We'd taken the demo to Atlantic to sell the song, and as soon as they heard it they flipped and said they'd rush release it at once. I was on the road at the time touring with Chuck Jackson who was big then, and since I had no time to go in the studio and re-record it they issued the record straight off the demo-dub I'd had made. Wasn't that a bitch? Well, the record took off so damn fast that it sold like crazy, and it was really lucky for me to be touring at the same time since Atlantic were able (sic) to arrange all sorts of promotional stints and interviews to tie in with the local radio stations where I was visiting. The personnel on the record include Horace Ott on Piano, Snags Allen on guitar, Barney Richmond on bass, and Bruno Carr on drums. The song originally appeared on the album of the same name and is available on CD on Doris Troy Sings Just One Look & Other Memorable Selections on the Collectables label. I do not own the right to the songs, audio, or images contained in this video. No copyright infringement is intended. Surely one of the most talented one-hit wonders of the rock era, Doris Troy hit the Top Ten with Just One Look in 1963, but also recorded many other fine pop-soul sides for Atlantic between 1963 and 1965. Unlike many soul performers of the time, Troy wrote most of her own material (under the pseudonym Payne), and had already written for other artists and sung backup with Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick and Cissy Houston on New York soul records before striking out on her own. More melodically ambitious and stylistically eclectic than many of her peers, her Atlantic sides blend elements of gospel, girl group, blues, and pop into a rich New York soul sound. Troy never reached the charts again after Just One Look, but was more appreciated in England, where she toured occasionally and where the Hollies covered her What'cha Gonna Do About It on their first album. Moving to Britain, she recorded an album for Apple in 1970 with assistance from George Harrison and Billy Preston. In the early '70s, she sang backup vocals for British rock groups, most notably the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd, in addition to recording a couple more albums. In the '80s she starred in Mama I Want to Sing, a musical based on her life story. The musical became a touring success, one which Troy remained involved with until 1998. She continued to perform in Las Vegas until her death from emphysema on February 17, 2004. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi
