  • Women in Jazz

As the 1920s wore on, jazz, despite competition with classical music, rose in popularity and helped to generate a cultural shift. Dances like the Charleston, developed by African Americans, suddenly became popular among younger demographics.[6] With the beginning of large-scale radio broadcasts in 1922Americans were able to experience different styles of music without physically visiting a jazz club. The radio provided Americans with a trendy new avenue for exploring the world through broadcasts and concerts from the comfort of their living room.[8] The most popular type of radio show was a potter palm: amateur concerts and big-band jazz performances broadcasted from cities like New York and Chicago. Jazz artists like Louis Armstrong originally received very little airtime because most stations preferred to play the music of white American jazz singers. Big-band jazz, like that of James Reese Europe and Fletcher Henderson in New York, was also popular on the radio. This style represented African Americans in the cultural scene predominately controlled by white Americans.

  • Musaria Feat. Saturna - Moment - Headset Recordings

    Released on September 7th, 2010

    Artist: Musaria feat. Saturna
    EP Title: Moment
    Headset Recordings 2010
    1. Musaria feat. Saturna - Moment
    2. Musaria feat. Saturna - Moment (Atjazz Vocal Mix)
    3. Musaria feat. Saturna - Moment (Atjazz Instrumental Mix)
    4. Musaria feat. Saturna - Moment (Jackson Lee Remix)
    5. Musaria feat. Saturna - Moment (JACKeens Remix)

Moment is the type of summer vibe that both creates new memories and is haunting in the past memories that it evokes. It is indelible and lingering in its impression but it is as allusive as a fading Polaroid. Memphis based Musaria has put his name on recent remixes for Larry Heard, Dubtribe and Corduroy Mavericks. His contribution to house music has been significant for the past twenty years but his latest work is exactly the shot of soul that House Music needs today. Saturna, fellow Memphis House Music alumni, lends vocal duties to Moment. The results reflect the characteristic House Sound of Memphis rolling as deep and as the Mississippi River and as mythical as the ghosts of the delta blues and Memphis R&B. The sound is organic at heart with a musicality and production standards that are sure to reach demographics as diverse as Chicago, Detroit, San Francisco, Germany, Ibiza and beyond. Rich pads spread their warmth outward to crisp rolling percussion as Saturna's vocals entwine with strings both seductive and ephemeral. Move your dance floor physically and emotionally with Moment.

Jackson Lee submits a remix that is immediately surreal and a little more inspired by a fever dream than by summer heat. It is deep and minimal in character but retains the groove infection of the original song. The bassline and kickdrums could be built from the dust found in the crevices of King Tubby's bassbin. A single organ note beckon deeper into the rhythm as the summer vibe of moment turns into a sunset on a primordial beach. Saturna's vocals are mutated into a round syllable of stepping-stones carrying you to a dreamland. The richness of harmony found in Moment is still present in Jackson Lee's remix but the humidity of the Memphis vibe has definitely resulted in hallucinations suitable for a late night sweaty dance floor. This one is for the heads, it will not disappoint.

The Jackeens carry Moment to the heart of the dance floor with a big room sound that is relentless in its motion. The Jackeens remixes are quickly earning a reputation for all things synonymous with a feel good groove. Saturna's vocals are pushed in a decidedly bass heavy syncopation clicking and popping with the kind of sound that devastates clubs globally. This is the one for peak hour.

Atjazz presents vocal and instrumental remixes of Moment. He perfectly distills Musaria and Saturna's summer dance floor soundtrack to its simplest form. Kick drums the depth of the night sky, snares are the essence of classic drum machines shakers connect the space between the moon and the tides and a synth pad constructed of a fender Rhodes is the message in a bottle carrying the history of jazz elegance to House Music present. In the year that celebrates the anniversary of Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, Atjazz builds something from the legacy of Miles that is somehow more fitting than anything I have heard or expect to hear this year. Atjazz needs no introduction as his contribution to House Music has infused a jazzy depth to countless record labels and dance floors around the world. He graces Moment with a touch of class that identifies and magnifies everything that is timeless and modern in its structure.

  • Tokimonsta & Anderson .Paak perform Realla at Rough Trade NYC

Tokimonsta & Anderson .Paak perform Realla at Rough Trade NYC. The stop is part of Tokimonsta's nationwide Fovere tour.

Tokimonsta is a very talented and charismatic DJ/producer who unintentionally represents a lot more than her music. Jennifer Lee (aka Tokimonsta) grew up near Los Angeles in Torrance, California, and lived that contrasting lifestyle that most first generation Asian American kids experience. She’s a classically trained pianist, but grew up bumping West Coast hip-hop. She earned a business degree from UC Irvine and worked in business development for a video game publisher, but eventually decided to follow her creative passions, and good thing she did.

Tokimonsta probably didn’t intend to be a trailblazer when she chose to steer her career towards creating music. Her lush, eclectic and genre-less style has helped her gain serious notoriety within the electronic/ dance/ future beats scenes. She was the first female to sign to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, joining in 2010. Since then Tokimonsta has developed a global fan base, recorded three albums, five EPs, and countless remixes, and is currently prepping her new album, Fovere, which will be released on her own label Young Arts Records.

In addition to putting out great music and charming every crowd she plays in front of, Tokimonsta is subtlety representing the increasing diversity in music. She’s Asian American and she’s a female, and these two demographics, in themselves, are not prevalent in the male dominated DJ/producer scenes. To operate and compete in an industry where you’re considered the “anomaly” is very challenging, but Tokimonsta again proves that everyone talent is not limited to a certain groups. Ultimately, it’s music, so who cares what you look like as long as it sounds good. I root for Tokimonsta because being an Asian America myself; I don’t see a lot of representation in mainstream culture, especially in entertainment, so I like it when Asian Americans are winning in industries that stray from the stereotypes.

I attended Tokimonsta’s Brooklyn stop of her Fovere tour at Rough Trade NYC. Even with a poor sound system, Tokimonsta was able to fuel a great party, dropping a number of remixes and original songs. Friend and collaborator Anderson .Paak (he’s all over Dr. Dre’s Compton album) joined her for a sold portion of the show, and I’ll admit that I’ve grown to like Anderson .Paak’s singing abilities (he’s also half Korean). One of my favorite things about Tokimonsta is that she always looks like she’s having the best time ever on stage, constantly beaming and she transitions between songs. That only enhance audience engagement is one of the reason she’s making some moves in the music space.

Well we all want more jobs, more jobs, more jobs,
But we need more better jobs, better jobs,
Reduced to petty cogs, grinding in the gears,
Well we all want more jobs, more jobs, more jobs,
But we need more better jobs, better jobs,
Hogs tearing up the fields for too many years,

Lock up the executives, take back their bonuses,
Give them to a million kids so they can go to good colleges,
Because way out in the sticks, or down in the projects,
It's just economics, poor is poor.

It ain't that hard to fix, we just need back our checks,
And a few more balances, and millions of mortgages,
That ain't so far fetched, if we all jump in the mix,
It's just demographics, fair is fair.

Well we all need healthcare, healthcare, healthcare,
    But it's not a red-scare,
The way I see it square, and $#%@ all y'all,
Well we all need healthcare, healthcare, healthcare,
    But it's not a red-scare,
No profit, one single payer, it only seems fair.

Once prophets were beseeched, now profits are free speech,
The big storm stole the beach, and the levees and the dike breached,
And the polar ice sheet, keeps melting in the seat,
It's just meteorology, the science is in.

It's in on solar power, but not so much on whole wheat flower,
Uncertain about the twin towers, and the genes in the cauliflower,
So over the me, me, me, how about some community,
It's just biology, let's see if we can swim.

Well we all need free time, free time, free time,
    Some quality time,
With brats, brisket, beer, family and friends
Well we all need free time, free time, free time,
    Even a little me time,
Some hours at the end of the week just mine to spend.

I'd spend 'em on writing songs, I'd spend 'em on righting wrongs,
A little less on dropping bombs, and no more for the wall street mob,
No more too big to fial, no more billions in bail,
The crooks never even went to jail, we're still waitin' on a plea.

Some are waitin' on a world ender, some are waiting on an alien offender,
Who might have a sinister agenda, some are jumpin' out of 20 story windows
Some talk about cosmic drift, and some about polar shift,
But not many are physicists, so let's wait around and see!
