    Lyrics

    You sigh and you walk
    You talk
    You care about nothing
    Sometimes you're feelin'
That life has treated you wrong
    I've got a feeling
You know what the score is

    Baby
But it's hard when you're sitting here
    Surrounded by friends
    I've got a love
    That I'll cling on to
    And I'll stay there
    Stay there till the end

    I
    Have found
    An answer
    I don't think you don't care
    Just you laugh
    'Cause you're loaded
And things are different from there

    I
    Have found
    An answer
    I don't think you don't care
    Just you laugh
    'Cause you're loaded
And things are different from there
    You walk and you talk
And you sing and you shout
    And you justify
    About anything
And you rant and you rave and you hope and you say
    Nothing
And you eat and you drink and you dress and you live as if
    No one else did baby
    No one else like you
    Lives out in this world
    I've got a love
    That I'll cling on to
    And I'll stay there
    Stay there till the end
'Cause one thing I know is

    I
    Have found
    An answer
    I don't think you don't care
    Just you laugh
    'Cause you're loaded

    I
    Have found

  • Deacon Blue - Sydney - November 22 & 27 2019

    1:28:39

A treat for Deacon Blue 'Believers', recorded at their Sydney concerts on the 22nd and 27th of November 2019. 17 songs which can be listened to as a delicious whole or broken into chunks and savoured song by song.

30 years on and still going strong, Deacon Blue sounded fantastic, performing 24 songs on the first night and 23 on the second. As with all their shows the setlists were not the same. The songs in this video are basically in the same order as they were played on the two nights, with the exception of Your Town which was played earlier on the second night. Of course, some songs were not performed both nights. I had thought of creating two seperate videos but I wanted to watch it as one complete performance. Despite some differences in sound quality between the two nights (where I was standing on the 22nd produced poorer results), I’m pleased with the end product. I hope I’ve done their live performances justice. I also hope they’ll be returning to Australia soon.

    Lyrics

And I'd tear out the pages
That I've got in these books
Just to find you some words
    Just to get some reward
And I'll show you all the photographs
    That I ever got took
And I'll play you old 45's
That now mean nothing to me

And you're a real gone kid
    And maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
I'll do what I should have did

Now I've stood on your shadow
    And I've watched it grow
And it's shaken and it's driven me
    And let me know
Let me know let me know let me know
    About all the old 45s
    And the paperback rooms
And it's scattered all the photographs
    Of summers and suns

And you're a real gone kid
    And maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
    Maybe now baby
I'll do what I should have did
    Cause you're a real
    Gone
That now mean nothing to me

Deacon Blue further their huge creative and commercial renaissance with the release of their brand new studio album, ‘Believers’ on September 30 on earMUSIC.

‘Believers’ is the third part of a trilogy begun with ‘The Hipsters’ in 2012 and continued with ‘A New House’ in 2014. As such it continues a songwriting trajectory that is rich, idiosyncratic and sharply honed – and inevitably coloured by a sense of urgency to make sense of recent events, both personal and global.

First single ‘The Believers’ is a song reflecting, in part, on the scenes of despair among refugees attempting to cross the Mediterranean and elsewhere – but nevertheless cast as an anthem of hope.

Ricky Ross says: “The song which starts off the whole album is ‘The Believers’. It’s our statement that belief in the possibilities of hope and a better tomorrow is the side we choose to come down on. We once covered the mighty protest song, ‘Which side are you on -’ a pressing question in today’s political climate. This record is our best answer’.”

Expanding to talk about the album, Ross continues; “You try to write something that would be good enough if it turned out to be the last thing you did. When you’re young you think ‘There’s plenty more records I can do.’ It’s not so urgent somehow. There are still plenty more records that I want to make. But I might not get time to do them all. That’s a thought that certainly pulls the songwriting into focus.”

‘The Believers’ is the band’s 8th studio album and consists of 12 tracks, written or co-written by Ricky Ross. The record was produced and mixed by producer and friend Paul Savage (Mogwai, Arab Strap, The Twilight Sad, Wu Lyf) who previously worked with the band on ‘The Hipsters’. Two tracks were mixed by Grammy award winning Michael Brauer (Coldplay, John Mayor).

Ricky Ross says of the album trilogy now completed with the new record: “‘The Hipsters’ was about the band – my love letter to Deacon Blue. Our last album ‘A New House’ was about our country, Scotland. This album is about the journey we all take into the dark. You come to that point in your life where – whatever you’ve been told, whatever the evidence you’ve been presented with – you just don’t know what the answer is. At which point you can only rely on instincts of your heart. You either take the leap or you don’t.

It’s been a journey. I started the tentative writing process in December 2014 and carried it on until May this year. In that time lots of things in the world have changed.”

    Lyrics

    Cold dawn won`t comfort you
    Cold coffee
    Won`t see you through
    Cold sheets

    Won`t heal your heart
    Your frozen fingers of your
    Name so tarred
    I know so rarely

    That things come your way
    Your ways are tender
    And your paths are straight
    Your mind`s not lived in

    The way ours are set
    Your heart is open
    To love and regret
Rings and letters they pass you by

    You wish them well
    And seldom cry
For stones and promises and wedding sighs
You`ve known the times that you`ve

    Lived and died
    These sailors come by
    And spend time ashore
    Their thoughts are hoarded

    As yours have been stored
    Your mind`s not lived in
    The way ours are set
    Your heart is open

    To love and regret
    Outside in the morning air
I hear the soundtrack of the
    Blues harp player

    It touches feelings that you
    Don`t arouse
    Knocks me back to that
    Shuttered house

    Take me back
    When they`re all out
    Take me back to that
    Shuttered house

    I know so rarely
    That things come your way
    Your ways are tender
    And your paths are straight

    Your mind`s not lived in
    The way ours are set
    Your heart is open
    To love and regret

    =====================
    About 2 Meter Sessions
    ====================
Based in the Netherlands, 2 Meter Sessions is an independent, ongoing (new) music platform with a great legacy. Monthly we film 3 to 4 sessions with promising and breakthrough acts from all over the world.

Many well-known acts have visited the show; from James Taylor, Elliott Smith and David Crosby to Damien Jurado, Ben Howard and Josh Ritter, via Radiohead, Nirvana, Coldplay and Foo Fighters. Archive footage can regularly be seen in (theatrical) documentary movies, like “Mystify: Michael Hutchence” (with footage of our session with INXS, filmed in 1997), “Heaven Adores You” (with footage of our session with Elliott Smith, filmed in 1998) and “All I Can Say” (with footage of our session with Blind Melon, filmed in 1993).

The show started back in 1987 by radio presenter Jan Douwe Kroeske. On his popular national radio show he persuaded New-Zealand band Crowded House to play a couple of songs. The response of the public was so great, that 2 Meter Sessions quickly became a household name. In 1993, the show made a successful transition to national television. From there the show became a national phenomenon, for over 10 years, with filmed sessions of new talent, breakthrough acts and arrived career artists. Almost a million of 2 Meter Sessions cd’s were sold in the Netherlands.

    Lyrics

    Alan doesn't understand her
    He only thinks in numbers
    He only drinks in restaurants
Where the girls are fully covered

And he can't trust his yearnings
    And he doesn't like pretending
His tempers stretched so much by work
    His heart needs gentle rending

He calls her the chocolate girl
Cause he thinks she melts when he touches her
She knows she's the chocolate girl
Cause she's broken up and swallowed
And wrapped in bits of silver

    Alan doesn't understand this
    He says he's only human
So he still lights up with old flames
As if to try and prove it

    And he doesn't like emotion
He's not certain of their ardor
If pouting causes so much fun
    Then breaking hearts is harder

He calls her the chocolate girl
Cause he thinks she melts when he touches her
She knows she's the chocolate girl
Cause she's broken up and swallowed
And wrapped in bits of silver

    Alan doesn't understand her
    He thinks it's getting harder
So he spends the night with old friends
    Underneath the covers

And he talks about the chocolate girl
And how he thinks she melts when he touches her

I used to really enjoy listening and indeed recording the BBC Radio 1 In Concert series on a Saturday evening during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. I also caught a few BBC Radio Friday Rock Show and Capital Radio sessions. I still have the cassette tapes and as the BBC has no immediate plan to make these available to the public I have decided to release close to 250 of these historical recordings on my YouTube channel.

This live sequence of Deacon Blue was recorded at an Aids benefit gig called Aids, Aid which was held at Bennets a Gay nightclub in Glasgow ‪on the 23rd November 1987‬. The event was set up by ‪Robbie McFadyen‬ with help from Jane and David Henderson and many others. It was shot using only one camera (Paul Herley ) in the natural club lighting with an audio feed from the main mixing desk. We were granted a prime pre arranged up close and personal position. In keeping with the original purpose of this event here is the link for HIV Scotland, to make a donation follow this link, thank you.
