  • How To Make It Sound Like Jazz - Great Embellishments

    7:42

In this video, I am going to show you some techniques and ways to play simple phrases that make what you play sound more like a jazz solo. There are some very common phrasing techniques in Jazz Guitar that are a huge part of the sound, and you can quite easily start adding them to your playing if you want to work on your Jazz phrasing. I am going to go over how you might play them and also give you some good examples of how they can be added to a line.

  • Jazz Blues - 3 Easy Techniques That Make You Sound Better

    9:24

You know the sound of the blues and can play blues solos. Then you start playing Jazz, and it is all about playing changes and using arpeggios and the right scales, but there is no common ground, and you don't have a way to combine the two as you hear with Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson or George Benson.

In this video, I am going to show you some of the techniques you can use to get that mix in there and play Jazz Blues, something that is great on a 12 bar blues, but that will work for you on pretty much all songs.

  • Comping A Jazz Standard - This Is How To Get Started

    6:49

Just learning the chords is not enough to really play something that sounds like real Jazz Guitar Comping. In this video, I am going to take an easy Jazz Standard, Perdido, and then show you how you can start with basic chords and step by step develop your comping, improvise with the chords, and not just play some chord grips and hope it sounds ok.

  • Jazz Phrasing - 3 Simple Things That Make You Sound Better

    7:53

Jazz Phrasing is a difficult topic to learn. You probably know the feeling of trying to come up or with lines and then even though you know the notes are right it is impossible to get it to sound like jazz phrasing.

In this jazz phrasing guitar lesson, I am going to show you some things that you need to be aware of when trying to come up with lines and which will help you jazz phrasing really a lot. One thing that is really interesting about this is that it is possible to write jazz licks that really cannot phrase well.

This is about how you play the notes and a little about which notes you play, and for me, it was really a huge part of getting my bop lines to sound good.

  • Jazz Beginner Mistakes - How To Learn Scales

    7:20

As a Jazz Guitar Beginner then you probably come from improvising mostly with the pentatonic scale, and the approach is to play phrases and licks in the scale without really worrying about what you are playing.

Now you want to check out some Jazz and then you realize that a lot of what you hear it is not pentatonic, it is using 7 note scales, and you are probably also finding out that this scale is a lot more tricky to get to sound right and especially to get to sound like great jazz lines

So just practicing the scale up and down is not enough to get it to sound like Jazz, you need to find a better way to practice the scales.

  • What Really Makes It Sound Like Jazz?

    6:37

If you want to learn Jazz Guitar, then you know it already: It is not enough to just run up and down the arpeggio to make it sound like a great Jazz guitar line.

In this tutorial I am going to show you some of the techniques you can use to add some jazz phrasing or flavor to your playing, what you need to use similar to the bends and vibrato you use in a blues solo, and you don't need a million scales and arpeggios for this, it is more about something else.

DR Big Band, DR Underholdning-sorkesteret, The Orchestra, Jørgen Emborgs Surrounding Moods, John Scofield, Kurt Elling, Lukas Graham og mange flere.

Her får vi jazzens essens rullet ud.

The recording featured is from a 1977 LP vinyl track of a jazz/rock band under the direction of Danish jazz composer and pianist Tom Prehn, celebrating the 50 year jubilee for the Royal Danish Music Conservatory in Aarhus, Denmark.

It sounds like a jam session, but it actually is a piece of music arranged by Tom Prehn and his then student Werner Elmker who is playing the famous solo from Chick Corea's Spain as well as accompanying singer Birgitte Frieboe in Tenderly.

The photos featured in this video were taken recently by Werner Elmker at an old train yard in Fairfield, Iowa.

    Burnin' Red Ivanhoe

Burnin' Red Ivanhoe was formed back in 1967, and that makes them one of the first scandinavian prog bands. Their style was quite original from the start, blending jazz-rock with R&B, blues, psychedelia etc.. their debut from 1969 (double album) M 144 sounds somewhat like THE WHO with jazz influences. Most of Burnin' Red Ivanhoe's albums have that certain scandinavian touch to it, similar to early 70's prog groups such as WIGWAM, CULPEPER'S ORCHARD and TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI. In 1971, the band released the album WWW, which is probably a good place to start (for proggers), as it contains some of their most progressive and interesting work. The self-titled album they released in 1970 (another gem!), also contains the track Secret Oyster Service, and quite soon after that, a new, even more jazz-orientated group was formed, called SECRET OYSTER. Burnin' Red Ivanhoe was disbanded in 1972 (although they released one more album in 1974), and as a result, most members moved over to SECRET OYSTER. Burnin' Red Ivanhoe is recommended for fans of early scandinavian prog rock.

    Secret Oyster

    Founded in 1972 - Disbanded in 1977 - Regrouped in 2007 - Still active as of 2020

SECRET OYSTER became somewhat of a super group when members of BURNIN'RED IVANHOE, CORONARIAS DANS and HURDY GURDY formed this unit. By the end of BURNIN' RED IVANHOE's career (that spawned seven years), Karsten Vogel started forming a new band taking along with him BRI's drummer Thrige and often jazz-partner bassist Vinding with him. Knowing from the Danish circuit guitarist Claus Bohling, he enticed him into the band that took its name from a track from BRI's second album Secret Oysters Service. The last to join was keyboardist Knudsen, who had never played an electric instrument prior to entering this outfit, but was playing in a piano avant-garde trio. Knudsen would prove particularly helpful as the second songwriter of the group and allowing Vogel to leave the keyboards at will to play wind instruments.

Their sound recalled MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA, NUCLEUS, Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi and Sextant albums as well as Miles DAVIS's Bitches Brew. Quite a success and this prompted their record company to release that album internationally but under the title Furtive Pearl. After a line-up changze that saw the rhythm section get a complete overhaul (Staer for Vinding and Streenberg for Thrige) their second album, Sea Son, is even better but failed to get international public recognition, even if all connoisseur will mostly agree on this album being the band's apex. At one point the line-up of this group was also exactly the same as BURNIN' RED IVANHOE (after it got revived because they also developed rockier material) as well as a third outfit, Day Of The Phoenix. This did not stop them from writing the music to a ballet Vidunderlinge Kaelling released as an album under the name of Astarte, with very mixed results just a few months before their final album, the much better Straight From The Krankenhaus also known as Orlander.

Aside from their confusion of their album names and general discography, SECRET OYSTER is a great jazz-rock/fusion outfit that deserved a lot more attention for they were almost as good as the groups named above.

All four original albums have received a thorough and outstanding remastering with added bonus tracks on the great label Laser's Edge. Secret Oyster got back together (Bohling, Vogel and Knudsen plus a new bassist and drummer) during the re-issues of their albums, touring the states and Denmark. Also maybe in the works, an un-released studio album (roots in the Astarte ballet deal) and a live album from these years could see the light of day in the following years.
