  • The Cranberries Zombie - Live on Late Show with David Letterman Nov. 11, 1994

Great Irish rockers The Cranberries perform their—protest—song Zombie live on Letterman (Aired Early November 1994) - In September 1994, The Cranberries released the lead single of their highly-anticipated second album, it was a sublime track called ‘Zombie’. The incendiary song was written by lead singer Dolores O’Riordan in response to the Warrington city bombings of 1993, England, perpetrated by the IRA terrorist and paramilitary organization. Johnathan Ball, 3, and Tim Parry, 12, were killed and 56 people were injured when two bombs hidden inside litter bins exploded at 12.27pm on March 20, 1993.

    - since nineteen-sixteen : Monday, April 24th, 1916, the first day of the Easter Rising in Ireland, an armed insurrection. The events of Easter 1916 are of seminal importance in Irish history.
    - Dolores O'Riordan: “The IRA are not me. I’m not the IRA. The Cranberries are not the IRA. My family are not. When it says in the song, It’s not me, it’s not my family”, that’s what I’m saying. [VOX Magazine, 1995]
    - The IRA is devoted both to removing British forces from Northern Ireland and to unifying Ireland. Traditional IRA activities have included bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, punishment beatings, extortion, smuggling, and robberies. []
    - During The Troubles, the IRA murdered about 1,800 civilians and members of the security forces. More than 3,500 died and tens of thousands were injured in more than 30 years of violence in Northern Ireland (1968 - 1998 or 2007). [Doris Lessing ,
    - At least 10,000 bomb attacks took place during the conflict in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. []
    - Allen Kovac, former manager, says Island Records urged them not to release it as a single. In his telling, she ripped up a $1 million check the label offered her to work on another song. []

    - The Real IRA is ranked #10 on The Top 10 List of The Richest Terror Organizations in the World . The list includes Hamas #3 , Al-Qaeda #4 , ISIS #5. The deadliest terror organizations in the world are also the wealthiest. [Jan 24, 2018,

    - The song is also dedicated to the two young victims, Johnathan Ball and Tim Parry. []

    - A shorter version of the song. David Letterman's musical director and band leader Paul Shaffer, played the piano with them.
    - Late Show with David Letterman (1994.11.11) Season 2, Episode 49, Show #0268, CBS.
Attendance/Capacity: 400/400. Ed Sullivan Theater, New York City.

???? Dolores O'Riordan's vocal technique / trademark: Active voice (low note) + Passive voice (high note) : Mix / belt / chest voice (low note) + falsetto / head (high note).
Considering the action of internal thyro-arytenoid muscle, when tensing or turning off, and also several possible sonorities when worked in conjunction with the different positions of the FILTER (jaw, tongue, soft palate, and vocal tract as a whole), this change of tension / activation in the glottis itself, brings a marked difference of sonority and even of timbre, illustrated by the song ZOMBIE of the Irish band The Cranberries. The distortion itself, in the passaggio, turns into the effect, she’s actually yodeling. [source: @espacocristianoschmitt - Profº Jonathas Pozo from Espaço Cristiano Schmitt]
Dolores was well known for her Mezzo Soprano voice, integrating traditional yodeling, Keening and her Irish accent.
    Vocal Range: B2 - C6
    [The Range Planet]

    - It was written by O’Riordan alone in the calm of her own flat, in Ireland in 1993. Recorded in Dublin with their long-time producer and friend Stephen Street in 1994. []
    - The music video for 'Zombie' - which features scenes from a Troubles-torn Northern Ireland - was banned by the BBC at the time of the song's release. []
    - ZOMBIE music video (NO Auto-tune on vocals) was filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland during the Troubles with real footage, the colored clips in Los-Angeles.[]
It was filmed by director Samuel Bayer, who directed Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
    - I was trying to immerse myself in what the Irish identity was about. The blood and the soul, the history and the pain of what that song was really about. [Samuel Bayer, 27 December 2017]

    - The Cranberries were formed in Ireland in 1990 and have sold nearly 50 million albums as of 2019. [ Ireland's publication]

Dolores' impact on the music world remains strong ★❤️

    - The Cranberries - Zombie was covered in 53 songs []

The US Supreme Court states in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, 510 U.S. 569 (1994) that copyrighted work is transformative if it uses a source work in completely new or unexpected ways, which is also supported by Kelly v. Arriba Soft Corporation, Perfect 10, Inc. v., Inc, Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. v. Nintendo of America, Inc. and Sega Enterprises, Ltd. v. Accolade, Inc. The modern emphasis of transformativeness in fair use analysis stems from a 1990 article by Judge Pierre N. Leval in the Harvard Law Review, Toward a Fair Use Standard, which the Court quoted and cited extensively in its Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, 510 U.S. 569 (1994) opinion. In his article, Leval explained the social importance of transformative use of another's work and what justifies such a taking:

[If] the secondary use adds value to the original--if the quoted matter is used as raw material, transformed in the creation of new information, new aesthetics, new insights and understandings--this is the very type of activity that the fair use doctrine intends to protect for the enrichment of society.

Transformative uses may include criticizing the quoted work, exposing the character of the original author, proving a fact, or summarizing an idea argued in the original in order to defend or rebut it. They also may include parody, symbolism, aesthetic declarations, and innumerable other uses.

Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the United States Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research. • The Cranberries - Tomorrow

The Cranberries will return with Roses, their first studio album in
over a decade via Cooking Vinyl on February 27th. The Cranberries:
Dolores O'Riordan, Noel Hogan, Mike Hogan, and Fergal Lawler, began
their career in their native Limerick, Ireland in 1989 and sold more
than thirty million albums worldwide in the nineteen nineties. Roses
was produced by the band's longtime friend and collaborator Stephen
Street (The Smiths, Blur) and harkens back to the freshness and
originality of the band's first two albums, 1993's Everybody Else Is
Doing It, So Why Can't We? and the 1994 follow up, No Need To Argue.
Tomorrow is the seize-the-day themed first single from Roses and is
a powerhouse anthem that immediately recalls classic Cranberries. The
Colin McIvor directed video for the single premieres today via VEVO
and was filmed in Dublin last month. Regarding Tomorrow, Dolores
O'Riordan stated The song was written really spontaneously. People
tend to overly ponder, it is the human condition and 'Tomorrow' is
about getting away from the consuming thought process.

In 2003, The Cranberries announced their break up, but they briefly
reunited for an acoustic performance when Dolores O'Riordan received
an honoree degree at Trinity College in 2009. The minute we started
playing, it felt like we'd never stopped, Dolores recalls. There's
something about playing with The Cranberries. It's like putting on a
perfect pair of shoes. It just fits. In 2010, they commenced a
reunion tour of 107 concerts that took the band all over Europe as
well as to North and South America and Asia, culminating in the band's
first ever shows in China in 2011.

Dolores stated, Having recorded two albums with various different
musicians during our hiatus, I could clearly see that Noel and Mike
have a unique way of creating chords and Ferg keeps it together in a
subtle way. We had a blast in the studio, Stephen was in his zone and
it came together rather quickly. There is a sense of rejuvenation in
the group, freshness. Guitarist Noel Hogan added, I always had the
attitude that there would be another album. Over the last six years,
Dolores and I were sending each other ideas on and off. During the
reunion tour, the band began working on new music during soundchecks.
The icing on the cake was to work with Stephen Street again who
    helped us rediscover our sound.

The songs on Roses come from a band with a renewed hunger and in every
corner you'll find the extraordinary sound of Dolores O'Riordan's
voice, the pivotal instrument which transformed the band from a group
of young Irish hopefuls at the edge of the 80s into an MTV sensation
and worldwide super group within just a few short years.

The Cranberries debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't
We? featured the massive singles Linger and Dreams and hit #1 in
Britain. The follow-up, No Need To Argue cemented the group's
popularity via such popular tracks as Zombie, Ridiculous Thoughts,
and Ode To My Family, ultimately being certified 7x Platinum in the
U.S. and 5x Platinum in Europe (hitting #1 in Germany, Austria, and
Australia, and #2 in the U.K.). The Cranberries had four top 20
Billboard albums, 8 hit singles, and worldwide sales of over 30
    million records.

  • The Cranberries - Dreams

    All my life
    is changing everyday
    In every possible way

    Though my dreams
It's never quite as it seems
    Never quite as it seems

I know I've felt like this before
But now I'm feeling it even more
    Because it came from you

Then I open up and see
The person falling here is me
    A different way to be

    I want more,
    impossible to ignore
    Impossible to ignore

    And they'll come true
    Impossible not to do
    Impossible not to do

And now I tell you openly
You have my heart so don't hurt me
    You're what I couldn't find
    A totally amazing mind
    So understanding and so kind
    You're everything to me

    Oh my life
    is changing everyday
    In every possible way

    And though my dreams
It's never quite as it seems
Cause you're a dream to me

  • Dolores ORiordan was glad when The Cranberries broke up

Dolores O'Riordan: The band became so successful that we became a commodity. There was an awfull lot of pressure and the fun was out of it a litlle bit. Having done all that it is like having a clean sleeve. Music is like a hobby again like painting is. That's great because you are really experiencing it.
