  • OLD SCHOOL GARAGE 2001 | DJ CAMEO, MR KAOS, MC LIMES & MC DOUBLE G | TASTE FM 92.5

    40:03

Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. Big up Gary G for this upload. DJ Cameo was known on the South and West London pirate radio circuits from the late 90s and throughout the 2000s playing UK Garage and a fusion of Hip Hop and R'n'B sometimes. Featuring on Ice FM, Lush FM and Delight FM. As regular shoppers at Uptown Records, Soho (a few roads away from Black Market Records) DJ Cameo and the likes of J Da Flex who worked there supplied us with all the bad boy tracks being released during that era. I remember taking those narrow winding downstairs into the record shop. Their were great vibes down there and they very hospitable although they charged more any other record shop. Also shouts of to Release The Groove Records, in Soho, another cosy record shop that always had rare tunes before everyone. Sadly, all those record shops disappeared and the gentrification of London has scene whole streets change.
Getting back to our point, DJ Cameo was part of The Specialists also known as the Specialist Edition along with the MC duo MR Kaos and MC Double G who teamed up nicely. Cameo began dabbling in music production around 2001, releasing a remix to infamous Danny C and MC Viper's, Addicted (DJ Cameo Remix). But it was until the release of Hi-Grade and Badazz Pt2 - J-Sweet & DJ Cameo (Sweet Beetz Recordings, 2001) that people really took note. They teamed up again to produce The Blob (Giro Recordings, 2002).
Cameo use to host Pirate Sessions, a grime show on BBC 1Xtra. Though a lot underground heads were opposed to joining 1Xtra as they could see it was set up by Blairites to co-opt ghetto youth and seal the death of pirate radio. Indeed, times were changing the likes of Channel U were also taking audiences away from pirate radio and now these new digital sets along with the growth of the internet and platforms across it were opening up the fore to new waves of performers being heard. But if you ask us this is what killed the pirate radio movement. No disrespect to Cameo or Heartless Crew for jumping ship as we fully understand people wanted to eat but even they couldn't see how sophisticated the establishment's operation to rid London and the UK of pirate radio stations. Though it took time it killed the organic movement of local hubs that were producing music and became one open channel of close knit people.

    28:12

Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. London Underground FM's MC Skanker had made some appearances on Flava FM. 87.6. Under DJ Randy C and DJ Clipper's management Flava FM was becoming an increasingly popular pirate radio station across London city and the suburbs.
MC Skanker was popular with London and Essex clubbers/ravers featuring at club nights in Romford, Purfleet and Colchester. He was a resident at Frisky, Delirious , The Vibe and Essex Boys. A year earlier he released a track with MC Looney T of Rinse FM 100.3, entitled Ruff Ride and was formerly part of the Reckless Crew/Reckless Kru, with the likes of Terror Danjah (After Shock label), D Double E, Chigga D (Bruza), Lethal (Triple Threat), Funsta (Fun), Mayhem DT, Hitman Hyper, Scratcha Dub Plate Dan (Scratcha DVA), Interlude, Looney Tik, Cisco, Dark Heart and Prefect.
We previously thought DJ Mayhem was MC Mayhem DT of the Reckless Crew, but it turns out they are two separate performers, one was a UK Garage DJ and the other was Drum & Bass MC.
DJ Mayhem was known for mixing up old and new UK Garage tracks, selecting 4x4 and 2 Step sounds.
This was at the height of Flava FM success on London's FM dial. Flava FM showcased a lot UK Garage crews, with the likes of: Nasty Crew (Mac 10, Stormin, D Double E, Hyper, Sharkie Major, Kano, Armour and Monkey), SWAT Team (DJ Collide, DJ Tiny, MC Easy Eraser & MC Method), Lyrical Lords, OT Crew (Syer Barz, Dogzilla, Devlin & Shotz), Knights Of The Round Table: DJ Smasher, MC Lucky Luciano & MC Skeet.

  • DJ Teebone , MC Sharky P B2B MC Ragga D | ICE FM 88.4 | Old Skool UK Garage Classics 2000

    46:05

Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. Prior to this era of UK Garage, DJ Teebone had already established himself as Jungle Drum & Bass producer before he crossed over to the UK Garage scene. Releasing scores of tracks on his label Riddim Track Records.
He also produced under the alias of Templeton Peck on the renowned record label Vital Essence.
He later set up his own label Solid City Records which was later got signed to the EastWest label. Solid City Records featured acts like Wiley, Maxwell D, GodsGift MC and the Pay As You Go Cartel, So Solid Crew (MC Mega Man & MC Romeo). Teebone also rounded up a selection of talent from all over London to form the Teara Unit (Sharky P, Maxwell D, Major Ace and Sidewinder)
One of Teebone's biggest accomplishment was Fly Bi with MC Sparks (RIP) and MC Kie, released in 1999. We salute him for his part in Jungle and UK Garage scene as a producer and DJ.

MC Sharky P (Sharkie P) was well known on the scene particularly after his hit track with DJ Pied Piper and The Masters of Ceremonies ‎– Do You Really Like It?
Note that some new school heads have confused him with Sharkie Major from the Nasty Crew, though they were later in the same crew, Sharky P was a celebrated veteran in the business of entertainment before the likes of Sharkie Major who later became a household name in the Grime scene and dubbed as a Grime Original. They are two different artists with completely different styles. At this point musically Sharky P is bubbly and jump up MC. Whilst Sharkie Major is raw Grime artist with gangsta lyrics. He also not be confused with the Happy Hardcore MC Sharkey, who featured on United Dance and Helter Skelter raves in the early 90s. Sharky P was diverse many people have wrongly pigeonholed him as being a old style Garage host, in fact was able to adapt his style and was in fact a talent ghetto chronicler who also later wrote deep lyrics which are leaps and bounds away from from his Garage past.

Shouts out to original Ice FM crew: DJ Bigatron, DJ Chunky (Sunship), DJ Charlie Brown, DJ Dexter Rico (Old London Records), DJ Dodger and DJ Dempsey (Face The Music Records), DJ Ecko, DJ Freefall, DJ Kalibre, DJ Martin Larner, Mr. Reds (Dexit Records), DJ Spin.E.B (Baseline Records), DJ Scot D, DJ Teebone (Solid City Records), DJ Professor T, DJ Virus, MC Bigga, MC Danger 18K, MC Ragga D, MC Ricky D, MC Sharky P (The Masters of Ceremony), MC Skippy, MC Spie, MC Teller and the DJs, MCs and producers that featured on the west London pirate radio station.

The year 2000 saw may successful UK Garage commercial UK chart releases: 138 Trek -DJ Zinc, 8 Days a Week - Sweet Female Attitude, Ain't No Stoppin' Us - DJ Luck & MC Neat ft. JJ, Battle - Wookie, Body Groove - Architechs featuring Nana, Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty) - Oxide & Neutrino, Bump 'n' Grind (I Am Feeling Hot Tonight) - M-Dubs ft Lady Saw, Call It Fate - Richie Dan, Can't Get Used to Losing You - Colour Girl, Cheque One Two - Sunship, Crazy Love - MJ Cole, Dangerous - Same People, Dedicated to Love - Marissa, Dooms Night (Revisited) - Azzido Da Bass, Down - Ruff Cut Bias ft Nicky Prince, Falling - Boom!, Fill Me In - Craig David, Flowers - Sweet Female Attitude, Fly Bi - Teebone ft MC Kie & MC Sparks, Freak Like Me - Tru Faith & Dub Conspiracy, Garage Affair - Timeless, Get Enuff - Wookie, Girls Like Us - B-15 Project, Here Come the Lick - Suburban Lick, Hold on to Me - MJ Cole ft Elisabeth Troy, I Don't Smoke - DJ Dee Kline, Imagine (Asylum Remix) - Shola Ama...

NO SOUL FOOD FOR ME, BUT AN UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION FOR ALL OF US AROUND 2:00

  • Underground UK Garage 2001 | DJ Paradise & MC Richie Rich | Freek FM 101.8

    1:33:36

Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. DJ Paradise was one of a few DJs who played dark underground Garage that was non-commercial. His track selection was sought after by DJs and record junkies. DJ Paradise has the most exclusive presses and promos. Back then DJ Paradise and MC Richie Rich had recently left the London Underground FM 89.4 for Freek FM 101.8. The DJ and MC duo called their showcase the Red Hot Beef Injection.

Towards the end of their time on air, Freek FM poached the best talent taking on the likes of Heartless Crew (DJ Fonti, MC Bushkin & MC Mighty Moe), MC Donae'O, Smooth Connection (DJ Shorty, MC Rudy and MC Diamond), DJ Youngsta (Dubstep Allstars), and many others.

DJ Paradise was definitely an underrated selector, he started his career spinning old skool Jungle music in the early 90s, then crossing over to DJing the Garage sound like many DJs were doing. However, the difference with DJ Paradise was he strictly played dark Garage beats which would later constitute to the early formation of Dubstep music. Spinning the most exclusive tracks by Zed Bias, Oris Jay (Darqwan)(Texture Records), Horsepower (Tempa Records), the Ghost Record Label crew (EL B, Nude, Blaze, Roxy & J Da Flex), Artwork, Benga (Big Apple Records), Hutchy B, DJ Zinc (Bingo Beats), Menta (Sounds Of Da Future), and other dark garage tracks of that era. DJ Paradise also did a guest slots on Rinse FM 100.3 on DJ Jason H's show before they got an official broadcasting license.

DJ Paradise is currently playing sets at Egg Club (King Cross) alongside DJ Emile and DJ Jefferson Souza to name a few at a night hosted by “Deep Inside You:

  • Ice FM 88.4 | DJ Virus & MCs Sharky P, Ragga D & Spie | Old Skool UK Garage 2001

    46:50

Artwork by Take Me Back Pirate Radio Archives. A recording from 2001 of West London's No.1 pirate radio station Ice FM 88.4. DJ Virus playing old skool UK Garages flavas. This set showcases different generations of MCs. With changing attitudes by Garage DJs and the scene, DJs now would be frequently accompanied by two or three MCs on a set. In the early 2000s we saw the introduction of heavier bassline tracks which were geared towards MC led sets. Ragga D featured on many sets going back to back with Sharky P. That year Sharky P gained mass commercial success with his joint hit single Do You Really Like It - Pied Piper & Masters of Ceremonies (DT, Melody, Sharky P & Unknown) (2001, Soul Food Recordings and then signed to Relentless Records). Despite his mainstream success, Sharky P continued to represent on the underground scene and on his beloved Ice FM 88.4.

Shouts out to original Ice FM crew: DJ Bigatron, DJ Chunky (Sunship), DJ Charlie Brown, DJ Dexter Rico (Old London Records), DJ Dodger and DJ Dempsey (Face The Music Records), DJ Ecko, DJ Freefall, DJ Kalibre, DJ Martin Larner, Mr. Reds (Dexit Records), DJ Spin.E.B (Baseline Records), DJ Scot D, DJ Teebone (Solid City Records), DJ Professor T, DJ Virus, MC Bigga, MC Danger 18K, MC Ragga D, MC Ricky D, MC Sharky P (The Masters of Ceremony), MC Skippy, MC Spie, MC Teller and the DJs, MCs and producers that featured on the west London pirate radio station.
