  • Clarence - DIY

    1:19

    DIY

    Music by Simon Panrucker

From 'Skater Sumo'. Clarence and Sumo make their own skateboard out of junk, with a hearty punk DIY ethic. This track was heavily inspired by my buddies Sauna Youth and their song Transmitters - they're awesome, check em out!

    LYRICS

I really really wanna make you
It’s gonna take all the patience I’ve got
I really really wanna make glue
To stick together all the bits I’ve got oh yeah

    It’s DIY
    Oh me oh my
    It’s DIY
    Oh me oh my
    Oh me oh my

I really really wanna take you
I'm gonna take all the things that I want
You know I really wanna take two
I’m gonna make this look so good oh yeah

    It’s DIY
    Oh me oh my
    It’s DIY
    Oh me oh my
    Oh me oh my

I really really wanna make you
I’m taking every step I can see
And I don’t really wanna break you
But if I do then it’s up to me oh yeah

    It’s DIY
    Oh me oh my
    It’s DIY
    Oh me oh my
    Oh me oh my

Make it, make it, make it
    1, 2,3,4

    It’s DIY
    Oh me oh my
    It’s DIY
    Oh me oh my
    Oh me oh my

  • EMO RAPPERS + THE FUTURE OF ROCK

    19:01

Emo rap and the future of rock have more in common than many people think, eg Epitaph Records signing Lil Lotus and guccihighwaters last week. Some of what I talk about:
    - Why artists like Lil Peep, Lil Tracy, Shinigami, Lil Aaron, Hella Sketchy, Fats'e, and 93feetofsmoke aren't actually emo rappers at all - I call it emo with 808s
    - How they compare to actual rappers and the best trap metal artists like Ghostemane, $uicideboy$, Pouya, Shakewell, Scarlxrd and Zillakami
    - Where real emo rappers like Lil Uzi Vert, Juice Wrld, XXXtentacion and Post Malone fit in (part of hip hop culture more than rock culture)
    - Why it's different from melodic rap like Drake, Future, Travis Scott and Roddy Ricch
    - Why I think these emo soundcloud rappers represent the creativity and DIY ethic missing from so much of pop-punk, metalcore, and other rock genres

Northwest Passage: The Birth Of Portland's DIY Culture (TRAILER)

During the late 70's and early 80's the Pacific Northwest witnessed a surge of idiosyncratic creativity that, for a time, banished the slack-jawed mentality of mainstream music and art to the shabby bargain basement of the cultural wasteland. Countless young men and women turned their backs on the hollow blather generated in corporate boardrooms, producing their own music and art with rebellious glee. NORTHWEST PASSAGE: THE BIRTH OF PORTLAND'S DIY CULTURE is an independent film that examines the alternative music movement in Portland, Oregon from 1978 to 1983. Directed and produced by Mike Lastra, NORTHWEST PASSAGE: THE BIRTH OF PORTLAND'S DIY CULTURE is a narrative told by musicians and artists via interviews photographs and vintage news clips. Bands that appear in the film include: POISON IDEA, SADONATION, The WIPERS, The DEAD KENNEDYS, The NEO BOYS, SMEGMA, The BAGS, The RATS, and The STIPHNOYDS

    4:06

Single Bullet Theory Winter Is Melting Away Demo 1979

The new wave band Single Bullet Theory were shot down by major-label heartaches before they were truly given a chance to be heard. Single Bullet Theory formed in Richmond, VA in 1976 as X-Breed, a group featuring Michael Maurice Garrett (vocals), Frank Daniel (guitar), and Dennis Madigan (drums). The band changed its name to Single Bullet Theory after Gary Alan Goober Holmes (guitar) and Davey Wynn (bass) joined. Inspired by the D.I.Y. ethic of British punk rockers, the bandmembers recorded and released their debut EP by themselves. However, Wynn departed from the band before the session was over, replaced by guitarist Mudd Herman. Daniel played the bass instead. Herman didn't last; the band added bassist Keith MacPhee and Daniel returned to his guitar. In 1979, Single Bullet Theory opened for Patti Smith, one of numerous weekly gigs in the Big Apple that started to reward them with positive press clippings. The band was then asked to contribute a track to the compilation LP Sharp Cuts, distributed by Elektra/Asylum. The song Keep It Tight would eventually become Single Bullet Theory's lone appearance on the U.S. pop charts, peaking at number 78. In 1983, Single Bullet Theory were signed to the Nemperor label, a subsidiary of CBS Records, and began recording their first album, a record given a pop polish that didn't accurately capture their sound. The video for Keep It Tight was added to MTV in 1984, but CBS abruptly stopped promoting it. Hang on to Your Heart was supposed to be Single Bullet Theory's breakthrough single; however, CBS never released it. Disillusioned by the music industry, especially CBS' lack of support, Single Bullet Theory broke up before releasing another LP.

  • New EP From Idols to Dust

    1:33

Dusks Embrace has been a band for 7 years and has become the embodiment of the DIY ethic. In the bands short career we have released two full length records and one EP, all completely self recorded, funded and promoted.

After years of limitations forcing me to work independently I have realized that it has become as much a part of the bands sound as what I play is. The bands sound has always been music that I love and what I knew of production at the time. It may not always be perfect but it was what we and I could accomplish during that time in our lives.

I am carrying on that tradition and will be self releasing a new EP this year. The last few years have seen all the other members come and go for various reasons. Now I am continuing on completely on my own. I have spent the last few years since Twilight really studying new production ideas and am really excited to get these songs out and show how things have evolved both in the playing and production.

If you have a minute check me out at really appreciate all the support I have had over the years and really appreciate all you who help keep independent artists afloat!

The team operates via a weekly open general assembly that welcomes anyone who respects the basic values of human diversity and advocates for their dissemination. All expenses are covered through events and donations, and since 2017 the university funds the operation of a small facility that hosts the equipment required for FM transmission. The team shares a DIY ethic and actively uses, develops and contributes open-source software and knowledge under the idea of commons. Using the radio technology, the scope is to experiment, embrace cultural diversity and bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and society, in order to develop both individually and collectively.

  • Picking It Up Again: L.A.s Latin American Ska Scene

    2:12

Though it may not enjoy the alt-rock radio dominance it had in the mid-1990s, ska ain't dead. In fact, it's enjoying quite the renaissance in south Los Angeles, where a community of Latin American musicians and fans are bringing global sounds and a DIY ethic and aesthetic back into the music. We met scene figurehead Clemente Ruiz to get an inside perspective on how a new generation is making ska the sound of their culture.

  • Shine - 6 Problems, Strive Studios Music School #CBCMusicClass

    3:40

Despite their young age, 6 Problems is one of Strive Studios Music School’s most experienced band classes. Comprised of Molly Dodgson (vocals, age: 11), Daria DiPietro (keyboard, age: 13), Gavin Dodgson (guitar, age: 13), Keegan Hedley (guitar, age: 12), Josh Rose (bass, age: 13) and Steven Togmus (drums, age: 12), the class has been a part of the school’s band program, led by instructor Brent Wirth, for over three years. During that time, the group has built an impressive list of accomplishments that include being selected as a top ten finalist for the 2018 edition of CBC’s Canadian Music Class Challenge, composing and recording original songs and hosting their own headlining concert.

Drawing inspiration from the film “School of Rock”, Strive Studios’ band program is a unique opportunity for young music students of all skill levels and backgrounds to unite and experience a holistic approach to being in a modern rock/pop band. Through this program, 6 Problems has flourished and created a bond, identity and work ethic that is truly inspiring. Most recently, the class hosted a concert that they independently planned, promoted and executed themselves. From booking the venue, designing posters, promoting the event, selling tickets and setting up the stage, it was an exemplary display of the DIY work ethic required of artists in today’s music industry. Even more admirably, the group decided to pay things forward by using the proceeds from ticket sales for a charitable cause which strives to ensure that all children have access to the joy and magic of making music and sharing it with others.

Illustrating the perfect underground success story, Slightly Stoopid's dual front-men Miles Doughty (Guitar, Bass, Vocals) and Kyle McDonald (Guitar, Bass, Vocals), created their own label, Stoopid Records, in the early 2000s to avoid signing a record deal and keep their DIY work ethic and freedom away from music industry politics. West coast DUB/Rock pioneers later added musicians Ryan RyMo Moran (Drums) and Oguer 'OG' Ocon (Congas, Percussion, Harp, Vocals) from the B Side Players, as well as C-Money (Trumpet, Keyboard) and Dela (Saxophone) from John Browns Body; solidifying their on stage line up. Slightly Stoopid, who describe their music as a fusion of folk, rock, reggae and blues with hip-hop, funk, metal and punk, has built a large n loyal fan base soaring to one of the most successful independent artists of this decade. The buzz surrounding the group continues to increase with each successive release; their album catalog sales have topped the 700,000 mark and the group continues to fill the most prestigious concert venues around the world.

  • Keep Shelly In Athens - DIY

    3:45

    Forest Family more
Almost a year after their debut, the aptly-named In Love With Dusk, Keep Shelly In Athens will be returning with 12 EP Our Own Dream. The Grecian downbeat-pop duo meanders through almost-forgotten electronic salad days and R&B beats of yesteryear. Melding an Ibizan ethic with new age, atmospheric synthesizing, KSiA continues to push the convention of electronic music to the brink, a challenge to the Balearic norm. Like their previous releases, the duo continues the erotic down-tempo tones and visceral back-beats, however at times Our Own Dream heats up—containing well-formed torrid, trance beats to compliment the soft female vocals. Forest Family is proud to announce this 12 EP will be released on white & silver vinyl in a very limited fashion of 500 (250 each color) on November 5th (on/at FUN FUN FUN FEST).

Formed by Rich Froberg and John Reis in 1999, Hot Snakes came into being when Reis took time off from his other band, Rocket From The Crypt. The pair had a strong DIY ethic, with Froberg doing the artwork for all the band's releases and Reis releasing them on his label, Swami, and Elemental in the UK. This is their final fierce studio album 'Audit In Progress'. It's a runaway bus that drags the listener in its wake like a loose muffler, bouncing and sparking on asphalt

Birds in Row is an experimental hardcore punk/metal trio who write punitive, exasperated tunes with equisitite, dark textures. Their members maintain a level of anonymity to pin the focus on the music itself rather than those who create it. Birds in Row is committed to a true DIY ethic, placing all their efforts into the creation of a deep fan-to-artist connection.

Recorded on July 25, 2018 in Chicago, IL.
