  • Dynasty - The Cory Band conducted by Philip Harper

    17:25

Dynasty was premiered at the 2019 British Open Brass Band Championships and pays tribute to one of the brass community's legendary figures, Harry Mortimer (1902 - 1992). Using key passages from Mortimer's autobiography On Brass as the source for the narrative and in keeping with the heritage nature of the subject, the work takes the form of a Symphonic Poem, a musical structure first introduced to contest audiences at the Crystal Palace in 1913. The work opens with a four-note leitmotif and the timeline unfolds as follows:
0:12 1 - Harry (One's destiny decided at birth “I'll make him the best cornet player in England”).
2:32 2 - War (Why do the nations so furiously rage together? Fred volunteers for military service)
4:06 3 - Theatre (And suddenly “I dashed to the rescue like a hero in the silent movies I was about to get to know so well”)
4:47 4 – Journey (Rejoice greatly “A new life in Cheshire with a promising band called Foden's”)
7:08 5 – Together (Come unto me “A golden age”)
8:03 6 – Farewell (For behold, darkness “Fred's death surely marked the passing of an era”)
12:14 7 – Amen (The Trumpet shall sound - Farewell reprised)

  • Christmas Song Stop the Cavalry by The Cory Band

    2:58

Stop The Cavalry is a song written and originally performed by the musician Jona Lewie.

The song peaked at number three in the UK Singles Chart in December 1980. The song was never intended as a Christmas hit, but the line 'Wish I was at home for Christmas' as well as the brass band arrangements made it an appropriately styled song to play around Christmas time.

This version is by The Cory Band with The Gwalia Singers.
    Lyrics:
Hey, Mr. Churchill comes over here
    To say we're doing splendidly.
But it's very cold out here in the snow
Marching to and from the enemy.
Oh I say it's tough, I have had enough,
    Can you stop the cavalry?

I have had to fight almost every night,
    Down throughout these centuries.
That is when I say, oh yes yet again,
    Can you stop the cavalry?

    Mary Bradley waits at home,
    In the nuclear fallout zone.
Wish I could be dancing now,
In the arms of the girl I love.

Bang goes another bomb on another town
While the Czar and Jim have tea.
If I get home, live to tell the tale,
    I'll run for all presidencies.
If I get elected I'll stop
    I will stop the cavalry.

This cornet solo was written for Peggy Thomas, principal cornet of the Chicago Staff Band of the Salvation Army. In 1987, Bandmaster, composer and arranger William Himes wrote Jubilance for Chicago Staff Band tour to England and performance in the Royal Albert Hall.
The solo quickly became popular because of its exuberant, fast-paced nature. Melodies such as “Because of You” and “If You Want Joy” are skilfully crafted into one by the composer.

William Himes (b. 1949) is an American composer of works primarily for wind band, specializing in music for young bands. He received his education at the University of Michigan. He has been the music director of the Salvation Army‘s Central Territory since 1977, overseeing their operations throughout the Midwest and conducting the Chicago Staff Band. This band, like much of Himes’s music, has been heard all over the world.
