  • Cook County Forest Preserve exploration - Oak Forest, IL

    31:06

-Read for more information and clarification!-
Exploring and attempting to use historic aerial photographs to identify buildings and other landmarks in a site purported by internet sources to be remnants of a town that no longer exists, and which was precursor to the town of Oak Forest, IL: Goeselville. Prior to the filming of this video, I had only seen the 1938 aerial. After looking at aerials from 1938-1980, it is likely that this site was a homestead/farm, and was inhabited until the late 1950s/early 60s, as evidenced by the presence of additional buildings and a small orchard. The site may well have been part of the town, but I have no way of determining its age other than it being at least 80 years old, due to its presence in the 1938 aerial. Demolishing of the buildings and growth of surrounding woods appears to have started in the late 60s/early 70s. With this in mind, another exploration may be in order!
The settlement created in the 1860's by the Goesel family existed at the intersection of 147th street and Oak Park Ave. Whether or not this group of buildings found just south of that intersection was a part of that settlement or belonged to another family is unknown. A map of land ownership in the area from 1900 has another name that looks to be in the area of this site, Dexter Minard.

  • ALBERT AMMONS - Bass Goin Crazy

    3:20

RECORDED IN 1939. Albert Ammons (September 23, 1907 — December 2, 1949 was an American pianist. Ammons was a player of boogie-woogie, a bluesy jazz style that swept the United States from the late 1930s into the mid 1940s.Born Albert C. Ammons in Chicago, Illinois, his parents were pianists, and he had learned to play by the age of ten. He also played percussion in the drum and bugle corps as a teenager, and was soon performing with bands on the Chicago club scene. After World War I, he became interested in the blues, and learned by listening to Chicago pianists Hersal Thomas and the brothers Jimmy Yancey and Alonzo Yancey. In the early to mid 1920s, Ammons worked as a cab driver for the Silver Taxicab Company and continued to reside in Chicago. In 1924 he met a fellow taxi driver who also played piano, Meade Lux Lewis. Soon the two players began working as a team, performing at club parties. Ammons started his own band at the Club DeLisa in 1934, and remained at the club for the next two years. During that time he played with a five piece unit that included Guy Kelly, Dalbert Bright, Jimmy Hoskins, and Israel Crosby. Ammons also recorded as Albert Ammons's Rhythm Kings for Decca Records in 1936. The Rhythm Kings' version of Swanee River Boogie would sell a million copies. Despite this success, he moved from Chicago to New York, where he teamed up with another pianist, Pete Johnson.] The two performed regularly at the Café Society, and were occasionally joined by Meade Lux Lewis, and performed with other noted jazz artists such as Benny Goodman and Harry James. In 1938, Ammons appeared at Carnegie Hall with Johnson and Lewis, an event that helped launch the boogie-woogie craze. Record producer Alfred Lion attended John H. Hammond's From Spirituals to Swing concert of December 23, 1938, which had introduced Ammons and Lewis. Two weeks later, he started the Blue Note Records by recording nine Ammons solos (The Blues, Boogie Woogie Stomp), eight by Lewis, and a pair of duets, a one-day session in a rented studio. Recorded as a sideman with Sippie Wallace in the 1940s, Ammons even cut a session with his son, the tenor saxophonist, Gene Ammons. From 2007 on Albert's grand daughter Lila Ammons (a classical trained singer) found back to her roots and started touring with the German pianist Axel Zwingenberger. They even cut a CD Lady sings the Boogie Woogie. Ammons played himself in the movie, Boogie-Woogie Dream (1944), with Lena Horne, and Pete Johnson. Although the boogie-woogie fad began to die down in 1945, following World War II, Ammons had no difficulty securing work. He continued to tour as a solo artist during this time, and between 1946 and 1949 recorded for Mercury Records, his last sides, with bassist Israel Crosby. Ammons's last triumph came when he played at President Harry S. Truman's inauguration in 1949, the same year as his own death. Ammons died in December 2, 1949 in Chicago. He was interred at the Lincoln Cemetery, at Kedzie Avenue in Blue Island, Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois.

The Latin American & Latino Studies Program at UIC is proud to be celebrating 40 years of academic achievement and community advocacy. None of this would have been possible without the student activism that took place in the early 1970's throughout high schools and university campuses across the United States. The struggle that it took to create the Latin American & Latino Studies program at UIC is a struggle that built bridges among different ethnic and community groups and continues to prevail. Join us as we celebrate the legacy of these students and congratulate the visionaries who continue to advocate for programs like Latino Studies in higher education today. We kick off the celebration on October 29 with a fundraiser for the newly established LALS Student Scholarship Fund at the National Museum of Mexican Art with the event From Vision to Legacy featuring music and presentations on the history and future vision of LALS. Lyrics:
This is what a woman wants
Any man of mine better be proud of me
Even when I'm ugly, he still better love me
And I can be late for a date that's fine
But he better be on time

Any man of mine'll say it fits just right
When last year's dress is just a little too tight
And anything I do or say better be okay
When I have a bad hair day
And if I change my mind
    A million times
I want to hear him say
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah, I like it that way
Any man of mine better walk the line
Better show me a teasin' squeezin' pleasin' kinda time
I need a man who knows, how the story goes
He's gotta be a heartbeatin' fire breathin'
    Breathtakin' earthquakin' kind
    Any man of mine

Well any man of mine better disagree
When I say another woman's lookin' better than me
And when I cook him dinner and I burn it black
He better say, mm, I like it like that, yeah
And if I change my mind
    A million times
I want to hear him say
Yeah (yeah), yeah (yeah), yeah I like it that way
Any man of mine better walk the line
Better show me a teasin' squeezin' pleasin' kinda time
I need a man who knows, how the story goes
He's gotta be a heartbeatin' fire breathin'

**The first five minutes of this video is of the hike to this area only**

The area currently known as Oak Forest was originally called Cooper's Grove in the early 19th century. Cooper's Grove was then bounded by Kenton, Cicero, Kilpatrick, Lamon, Lavergne and LeClaire Avenues. Mr. Cooper who settled here in the 1830s was said to have been the first resident of Bremen Township. A log cabin discovered by later settlers is believed to have been built by Cooper and was the first home built in the township.
The community was further established when settlers arrived to farm in the area (many of them were German-born), sometime in the mid to late 1840s. The Cooper's Grove post office began service in 1848 and later changed its name to New Bremen alongside the Bachelor's Grove post office which began service in 1843 and later changed its name to Bremen after township governments were established in Cook County in 1850. Neighboring community Tinley Park was part of the community known as New Bremen starting in 1854 until it was later incorporated as Tinley Park in 1892. The population of Bachelor's Grove began to dwindle as people moved to New Bremen/Tinley Park or Blue Island to be along the railroad tracks for more economic opportunities. Christian Goesel settled along 147th and Oak Park Avenue (then Bachelor's Grove Road) in 1861 in a community named Goeselville where a satellite of the New Bremen/Tinley Park post office operated from 1884 to 1903. At its highest peak there were about 30 residents in this area with a few general stores to supply the farmers. This area was absorbed by Oak Forest with earlier settlements now abandoned and forgotten.

  • Boogie Woogie - Monday Struggle - by Albert Ammons

    2:34

Born Albert C. Ammons in Chicago, Illinois, his parents were pianists, and he had learned to play by the age of ten. His interest in boogie-woogie is attributed to his close friendship with Meade Lux Lewis and also his father's interest in the style. Both Albert and Meade would practice together on the piano in the Ammons household. From the age of ten, Ammons learned about chords by marking the depressed keys on the family pianola (player piano) with a pencil and repeated the process until he had mastered it.[2] He also played percussion in the drum and bugle corps as a teenager and was soon performing with bands on the Chicago club scene. After World War I he became interested in the blues, learning by listening to Chicago pianists Hersal Thomas and the brothers Alonzo and Jimmy Yancey.[3]

In the early to mid-1920s Ammons worked as a cab driver for the Silver Taxicab Company. In 1924 he met back up with boyhood friend and fellow taxi driver Meade Lux Lewis. Soon the two players began working as a team, performing at club parties. Ammons started his own band at the Club DeLisa in 1934 and remained at the club for the next two years.[4] During that time he played with a five piece unit that included Guy Kelly, Dalbert Bright, Jimmy Hoskins, and Israel Crosby. Ammons also recorded as Albert Ammons's Rhythm Kings for Decca Records in 1936. The Rhythm Kings' version of Swanee River Boogie sold a million copies.

Ammons moved from Chicago to New York, where he teamed up with another pianist, Pete Johnson.[4] The two performed regularly at the Café Society,[4] occasionally joined by Lewis, and performed with other jazz musicians such as Benny Goodman and Harry James.

In 1938 Ammons appeared at Carnegie Hall with Johnson and Lewis at From Spirituals to Swing, an event that helped launch the boogie-woogie craze.[4] Two weeks later, record producer Alfred Lion, who had attended John H. Hammond's From Spirituals to Swing concert on December 23, 1938, which had introduced Ammons and Lewis, started Blue Note Records, recording nine Ammons solos including The Blues and Boogie Woogie Stomp, eight by Lewis and a pair of duets in a one-day session in a rented studio.[5]

In 1941, Ammons' boogie music was accompanied by drawn-on-film animation in the short film Boogie-Doodle by Norman McLaren.[6] Ammons played himself in the movie Boogie-Woogie Dream (1944), with Lena Horne and Johnson.[7] As a sideman with Sippie Wallace in the 1940s Ammons recorded a session with his son, the tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons.[4] Although the boogie-woogie fad began to die down in 1945, Ammons had no difficulty securing work. He continued to tour as a solo artist, and between 1946 and 1949 recorded his last sides for Mercury Records, with bassist Israel Crosby, and took on the position of staff pianist with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra. In 1949 he played at President Harry S. Truman's inauguration.[8] During the last few years of his life Ammons played mainly in Chicago's Beehive Club and the Tailspin Club, and just four days before he died he had been at the Yancey apartment listening to Don Ewell and Jimmy Yancey play. Albert himself could only play one song, having just regained the use of his hands after a temporary paralysis.[9][10] Albert Ammons died on December 2, 1949, in Chicago[1] and was interred at the Lincoln Cemetery, at Kedzie Avenue in Blue Island, Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois.

  • Phil Ochs - Paul Crump

    3:38

    Dm G
In the state of Illinois 'bout nine years ago
    Dm C Bb A
A cold blooded killer he went against the law
    Dm G
He killed a factory guard when his robbery did fail
    Dm C G
And they caught him and they threw him in the jail.
He lay there in his cell locked up with his hate
Not many men knew of him and less cared for his fate.
And he knew no peace of mind when his trial was comin' by
The judge said, You are guilty you must die.

    Bb F
But Paul Crump is alive today
    C F
He's a-sittin' in a cell, he's got somethin' to say
    Dm G
Every man has got something to give
    C Am
And if a man can change, then a man should live.

They sent him to Cook County Jail, a jail known far and wide
Where pity was a stranger and brave men often cry.
They locked him in the death row to count the days before
To the day they came a knockin' at his door.
    But another warden came along, Jack Johnson was his name;
He knew how prison living could drive a man to shame.
He had no need of pistols in a solitary cell
But a word of trust would help him just as well

But Paul Crump is alive today
He's a-sittin' in a cell, he's got somethin' to say
Every man has got something to give
And if a man can change, then a man should live.

Between the warden and the convict a friendship slowly grew
And one learned from the other that a man can live anew.
Then the warden called the convict, You must leave the devil's plan
The time has come for you to be a man.
Then the convict found religion and he started him to learn
He wrote himself a novel called _Burn Killer Burn_.
And as his dying day grew near, to the warden he did cry
You must pull the switch and I must die.

But Paul Crump is alive today
He's a-sittin' in a cell, he's got somethin' to say
Every man has got something to give
And if a man can change, then a man should live.

It was up to Governor Kerner to keep him from the grave
Was rehabilitation a reason to be saved?
The hour was comin' closer, the word was spread around
A new and better answer must be found.
Well the electric chair was cheated, the convict didn't pay.
A new concept of justice was born and raised that day.
Now throughout this peaceful land there are others set to die
What better time than now to question why?

But Paul Crump is alive today
He's a-sittin' in a cell, he's got somethin' to say
Every man has got something to give
And if a man can change, then a man should live.

  • Schooner Fare - John Cook .wmv

    5:28

Song of an infamous whaling trip which lasted 2 years, threatened mutiny, and drove a wife mad. Stuff great songs are made of! Written by Tim Rowe of Schooner Fare, this song is from their album Closer to the Wind. It is also on Classic Schooner Fare from 1989. Enjoy!

I have added a bit of history here, courtesy of Eugene O'Neill and Provincetown Playhouse.com. It is quite interesting:

The song is about Provincetown residents Captain John Cook and his wife, Viola, and about the two-year trip she took with him to sea. It is said she went mad when he refused to return home without a full load of whale oil. Viola never traveled with him again, and was soon known in town for her newly eccentric behavior. The crew threatened to mutiny the day after their 2 year contract for the trip was up and the ship was still locked in ice. It was a horrid trip and had major consequences for all involved.

    Personnel:
Tom Rowe (1950-2004) - bass, tin whistle, guitar, vocals
Chuck Romanoff - 12 string guitar, 4 string banjo, vocals
Steve Romanoff - 6 and 12 string guitars, 5 string banjo, vocals

Schooner Fare's Home Site with info, bios, where to purchase their music, and photos. There is also a dedicated area to remember Tom Rowe. He is still missed. It's a wonderful site. If you like their music please check it out!

    -I Don't Want To Miss A Thing -

I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you're far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Well, every moment spent with you
    Is a moment I treasure
I don't wanna close my eyes
    I don't wanna fall asleep
    'Cause I'd miss you, baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
    I'd still miss you, baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
    Lying close to you
    Feeling your heart beating
And I'm wondering what you're dreaming
Wondering if it's me you're seeing
Then I kiss your eyes and thank God we're together
And I just wanna stay with you
In this moment forever, forever and ever
I don't wanna close my eyes
    I don't wanna fall asleep
    'Cause I'd miss you, baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
    I'd still miss you, baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
I don't wanna miss one smile
I don't wanna miss one kiss
Well, I just wanna be with you
Right here with you, just like this
I just wanna hold you close
Feel your heart so close to mine
And just stay here in this moment
For all the rest of time
    Don't wanna close my eyes
    Don't wanna fall asleep
    'Cause I'd miss you, baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
'Cause I'd still miss you, baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
I don't wanna close my eyes
    I don't wanna fall asleep
    'Cause I'd miss you, baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
    I'd still miss you, baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
    Don't wanna close my eyes
    Don't wanna fall asleep, yeah
    I don't wanna miss a thing
