Bulgaria (/bʌlˈɡɛəriə, bʊl-/ (About this sound listen); Bulgarian: България, tr. Bǎlgariya), officially the Republic of Bulgaria (Bulgarian: Република България, tr. Republika Bǎlgariya, pronounced [rɛˈpublikɐ bɐɫˈɡarijɐ]), is a country in southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Romania to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometres (42,855 sq mi), Bulgaria is Europe's 16th-largest country.

Organised prehistoric cultures began developing on current Bulgarian lands during the Neolithic period. Its ancient history saw the presence of the Thracians, Greeks, Persians, Celts, Romans, Goths, Alans and Huns. The emergence of a unified Bulgarian state dates back to the establishment of the First Bulgarian Empire in 681 AD, which dominated most of the Balkans and functioned as a cultural hub for Slavs during the Middle Ages. With the downfall of the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1396, its territories came under Ottoman rule for nearly five centuries. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78 led to the formation of the Third Bulgarian State. The following years saw several conflicts with its neighbours, which prompted Bulgaria to align with Germany in both world wars. In 1946 it became a one-party socialist state as part of the Soviet-led Eastern Bloc. In December 1989 the ruling Communist Party allowed multi-party elections, which subsequently led to Bulgaria's transition into a democracy and a market-based economy.

Bulgaria's population of 7.2 million people is predominantly urbanised and mainly concentrated in the administrative centres of its 28 provinces. Most commercial and cultural activities are centred on the capital and largest city, Sofia. The strongest sectors of the economy are heavy industry, power engineering, and agriculture, all of which rely on local natural resources.

The country's current political structure dates to the adoption of a democratic constitution in 1991. Bulgaria is a unitary parliamentary republic with a high degree of political, administrative, and economic centralisation. It is a member of the European Union, NATO, and the Council of Europe; a founding state of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE); and has taken a seat at the UN Security Council three times

    17:36

The official project documentary reel for SHORTWAVEMUSIC 2012: TIMBUKTU, recorded on location throughout the Republic of Mali from 31 December 2011 - 17 January 2012. Funded by Kickstarter and independent contributions.

ShortWaveMusic is a global sound project dedicated to preserving the world's musical traditions and folklore as heard on local, regional, and international radio. I started the project in 2005 from a basement in Cambridge, MA, and it has since grown into an annual expedition to various far-flung parts of the globe.

Previous installments of ShortWaveMusic have been recorded in Ibiza, Bulgaria, and the United Arab Emirates. 2012 is the first in a new ten-year project chronicling the vast radio landscape of the African continent, beginning with Mali.

Recordings are made on location and then serialized over the course of 8-10 months at my Web site. My long-term goal is to tell the story of international broadcasting in the 21st century by capturing the extraordinary and varied ways in which people continue to communicate by radio, despite the advent of newer technologies.

    Nuclear Hell

    Lyrics:
Nuclear opression, the beginning of a war
A dying population nailed to the floor
Everything is set to begin the calculation
Of the firepower needed for a world obliteration
    Contamination spreading desperation and decay
Everything that's holy shall collapse in disarray
Divided nations at the brim of absolute destruction
All shall bow before the terror in construction

    Chorus:
Will it ever end, nobody knows
Humanity succumbs as the desolation grows
The atmostphere is locked in a gammaray cell
Welcome to the age of the nuclear hell!

Apocalyptic sceneries reveal before your eyes
Religious dogmas will collapse, every hope dies
Fear is reigning on the streets, famine takes control
Entire populations face their final fall
Authorities do nothing to prevent the utter chaos
People rush in panic as the toxic fumes progress
Lack of hope dividing people as our race is dying
Stricken by atomic force in peace we all shall rest!

    Vladimir Nemchev - vocals, guitar
    Stoil Kotev - guitar
    Ivan Chilingirov - bass
    Bozhidar Ivanov - drums

Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb
Mother do you think they'll like the song
Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls
Ooooh aah, Mother should I build a wall
Mother should I run for president
Mother should I trust the government
Mother will they put me in the firing line
Ooooh aah, is it just a waste of time
Hush now baby, baby don't you cry
Mama's gonna make all of your
    Nightmares come true
Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama's gonna keep you right here
    Under her wing
she won't let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama will keep baby cosy and warm
Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe
Of course Mama's gonna help build the wall

Mother do think she's good enough for me
Mother do think she's dangerous to me
Mother will she tear your little boy apart
Oooh aah, mother will she break my heart
Hush now baby, baby don't you cry
Mama's gonna check out all your girl friends for you
Mama won't let anyone dirty get through
Mama's gonna wait up till you get in
Mama will always find out where
    You've been
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean
Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe
You'll always be a baby to me
Mother, did it need to be so high.

  • Himni i Flamurit - Anthem of Socialist Albania, Vocal Version

    1:06

Himni i Flamurit or Betimi mbi Flamur (English: Hymn of the Flag or The Pledge on the Flag) is the national anthem of Albania. The music of the anthem was adapted from an original composition by the Romanian composer Ciprian Porumbescu, for the song Pe-al nostru steag e scris Unire. The words were written by the Albanian poet Asdreni (Aleksandër Stavre Drenova), and are close to the original Romanian lyrics which Andrei Bârseanu wrote for Porumbescu's piece.

Albania, officially the People's Socialist Republic of Albania, was a Marxist-Leninist government that ruled Albania from 1946 to 1992. From 1944 to 1946, it was known as the Democratic Government of Albania and from 1946 to 1976 as the People's Republic of Albania.

Throughout this period, the country had a reputation for its Marxist-Leninist style of state administration influenced by Enver Hoxha and the Party of Labour of Albania and for policies stressing national unity and self-reliance. Travel and visa restrictions made Albania one of the most difficult countries to visit or from which to travel. In 1967, it declared itself the world's first atheist state. But after the end of its communist regime in 1991, the practice of religion slowly increased. It was the only Warsaw Pact member to formally withdraw from the alliance before 1990, an action occasioned by the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. The first multi-party elections in Socialist Albania took place on 31 March 1991 – the Communists gained a majority in an interim government and the first parliamentary elections were held on 22 March 1992. The People's Socialist Republic was officially dissolved on 28 November 1998 upon the adoption of the new Constitution of Albania.

    Albanian Lyrics:

    Rreth flamurit të përbashkuar
Me një dëshir' e një qëllim,
Të gjith' atij duke u betuar
    Të lidhim besën për shpëtim.

    Prej lufte veç ai largohet
    Që është lindur tradhëtor,
    Kush është burrë nuk friksohet,
Por vdes, por vdes si një Dëshmor!

    Literal English Translation:

Around our flag we stand united,
With one wish and one goal,
A sacred oath we bestow upon it
    Proclaiming loyalty for our salvation.

    From war abstains only he,
    Who a traitor is born,
He who is a true man is not frightened,
But dies a warrior to the cause.

  • Capitols of the World

    10:00

This is a workshop from the new opera/musical, RED WHITE & BLUE with Contemporary Opera Los Angeles on September 6, 2007.
In this clip from Act II, John the director (Alphonzo Hicks) and Oscar the producer (Nicolas D'Ambra) are again making fun of Agnes the Stagehand (Susan Asbjornson) because she's actually never been anywhere but dreams of travelling and has carried a world map in her pocket since she was a little girl. She knows all the capitols of the world by heart and is surprised that the famous Rock Star Christian Michael (Jason Paige) knows them too! Christian catches Agnes trying on his vest and trying to dance like him. He knows she has a big crush on him so feels sorry for her and gives her a few rock star dance lessons as promised.

  • National Anthem of Croatia

    1:01

The lyrics to the anthem were first printed in Danica (The Morning Star) magazine in 1835, under the title “Hrvatska domovina” (“Croatian Homeland”). The music was composed later (1840s) by Josip Runjanin, a Croatian Serb, on the basis of Donizetti’s “O sole piu ratto” from the opera “Lucia di Lammermoor”. Later, in 1861, the score went through some minor changes done by V. Lichtenegger. In 1891 the song was first sung as the unofficial national anthem at an exhibition held by the Croatian-Slavonian Economic Society in Zagreb. (Croatia, still being part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, had that nation’s anthem as its official one.) It remained unofficial until February 29, 1972, when the first amendment to the Croatian Constitution declared it official (despite being part of Yugoslavia at the time) with a slight change in the lyrics upon 1990 independence.

  • Боже правде

    4:13

Bože pravde (Serbian Cyrillic: Боже правде; [bǒʒe prâːʋde]; God of Justice) is the national anthem of Serbia, as defined by the Article 7 of the Constitution of Serbia.Bože pravde was the state anthem of the Principality of Serbia and the Kingdom of Serbia until 1919 when Serbia became a part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes which was formed one year earlier. It was recommended by the regional Parliament of Serbia on August 17, 2004 and constitutionally adopted on November 8, 2006, after Serbia became a sovereign state again. The recommended text was made Law on May 11, 2009. The original song was written in 1872 with music by Davorin Jenko and lyrics by Jovan Đorđević. It was then a piece for the theater play Marko kazuje na kome je carstvo (Marko names the Emperor), and its immense popularity with audiences prompted its adoption as the Serbian national anthem.

  • Macedonia is not greek

    4:10

    Macedonia

In the inside of modern greeks is nothing but Albanians ( Arvanites), Macedonians, Christian Turks from Pontos and Asia minor, Aromanians and christian gypsies. The state of greece, which never existed in history was created in 1821 by the western powers, to use it as a biffer between Europe and the turks .After creating the state they had a bigger problem ? How to unite all different people in the state of greece as one nation. The answer was simple. They were all christians. So being christian orthodox was the definiton of being greek. This was in the first constitution of the newly created artificial state of greece. All theese people spoke different languages so they needed one language which will unite them. They chose the archaic language which they called greek which was based on medevial Koine language spoken only by the orthodox clergy ( same way LATIN was spoke all over Europe.) This new language was encouraged and enforced by the new goverment and all the other natural language were forbidden.. even to speak at home. People were getting fines for speaking their native language. year by year decade by decade , modern greek natiion was born. Many greeks are aware abou the total confusion about their pontik albanian aromanian, turkish origin but they dont want to accept that as a fact and falsely believe that is not true, and thats why they are so agressive towards anybody who tries to expose the real truth about their origin. The fuel for that is the revival of the great greek myth about a glorius past and connection with some antik people who lived on the same teritory some 25 centuries before them. As a famous greek writer says : We greeks need a national psychotherapy

March of the Volunteers (Yìyǒngjūn Jìnxíngqǔ, Zhongguo Guoge) is the national anthem of the People's Republic of China (including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since 1 July 1997, and the Macau Special Administrative Region since 20 December 1999), written by the noted poet and playwright Tian Han with music composed by Nie Er. This composition is a musical march. The piece was first performed as part of a 1934 Shanghai play and its original lyrics are the official lyrics of the national anthem. In 2004, a provision that the March of the Volunteers be the national anthem was added to the Constitution of the People's Republic of China as Article 136.
March of the Volunteers was composed by Nie Er to a text by Tian Han in 1934. Popular stories suggest, however, that Tian wrote it on a tobacco paper after being arrested in Shanghai and thrown into a Kuomintang (KMT) jail in 1935. The song was featured as the theme song of the 1935 patriotic film Sons and Daughters in a Time of Storm, also known as Children of the Storm, a story about an intellectual who leaves to fight in the Second Sino-Japanese War. The song was later used in Frank Capra's propaganda film, The Battle of China. It was one of many songs that were promoted secretly among the population as part of the anti-Japanese resistance during the left-wing cinema movement (1931-37). • Serbian Anthem Boze Pravde original Version. |HD|

    4:10

Bože pravde (Serbian Cyrillic: „Боже правде, meaning God of Justice or Lord, Give Us Justiceis the official anthem of Serbia until 2015, as defined by the Article 7 of the Constitution of Serbia. Bože pravde was the anthem of the Principality of Serbia and Kingdom of Serbia until 1918 when Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was formed. It was recommended by the Parliament of Serbia on August 17, 2004[1] and constitutionally adopted on November 8, 2006. The recommended text was made Law on May 11, 2009.[4] The original song was written in 1872 with music by Davorin Jenko and lyrics by Jovan Đorđević. It was then a piece for the theater play Marko kazuje na kome je carstvo (Marko names the Emperor), and its immense popularity with audiences prompted its adoption as the Serbian national anthem.

While being the anthem of the Kingdom of Serbia, it occasionally was referred to as 'Serbian National Prayer'and the original lyrics contained a petition for the Serbian king. Various rulers of Serbia changed the words of the anthem to suit them. During the rule of Prince Milan I of Serbia, the words were God, save Prince Milan (knez Milana Bože spasi), which changed to King Milan when Serbia became a kingdom. Later the anthem was tailored to Peter I and Alexander I as well.During the time of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later Kingdom of Yugoslavia), Bože pravde was part of its national anthem.

It was also used as an anthem of Republika Srpska, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the period of 1991 to 2006, when it was ruled down by the country's constitutional court. The Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina has ruled against the use of Bože pravde as the anthem of Republika Srpska in 2006, declaring it unconstitutional, and the decision was upheld by the Constitutional Court of Republika Srpska. The new anthem of Republika Srpska was adopted in 2008.

Republika Srpska retained the old lyrics, while Serbia uses slightly modified lyrics, asserting that it is no longer a monarchy — four verses are different. In three, Serbian king (srpskog kralja) is changed to Serbian lands (srpske zemlje) and in one, God save the Serbian king (srpskog kralja Bože spasi, literally The Serbian king, O God defend) is changed to God save, God defend (Bože spasi, Bože brani).

In 1990s, Vostani Serbije and Marš na Drinu were proposed as the anthem of Serbia along with Bоže pravde. The latter, promulgated by then-ruling Socialist Party of Serbia, even received a plurality of popular vote on 1992 referendum, but it never got officially adopted.
