Broadcast: 22 November 1968, repeat broadcast on 20 August 1969
    Winter Gardens, Bournemouth

Although the copyright has expired on the broadcast performance, the composition copyright for The Firebird is still in place. The YouTube ads make sure Mr. Stravinsky gets his dues.

    Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971)

    Edward Elgar (1857-1934)
    Symphony No. 1 (1908)

    2. Allegro molto (53:46)
    3. Adagio (1:01:48)
    4. Lento - Allegro (1:13:06)

There was a horrid squeal in Part 2 of The Firebird that I have mostly removed at the expense of everything over 5kHz.

The announcement is from a broadcast and states the concert was in June. Silvestri’s journal lists the concert as July.

Metamorphosis: The Transformation of the Bournemouth Symphony

This documentary tells the story of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's rise to international acclaim while under the baton of Maestro Constantin Silvestri. Ray Carpenter (1922-2017), the symphony's principal clarinet, shares his memories along with historic materials—photographs, excerpts of musical recordings, newspaper clippings, and programs. Ray provides insight into his own musical coming-of-age as well as musical life during the Silvestri (1961-1969) years. [10:25] II. The Story of the Calendar Prince
[22:19] III. The Young Prince & The Young Princess
[33:15] IV. Festival at Baghdad - The Sea - Shipwreck against a rock surmounted by a bronze Horseman

Today, May 21, 2017, it’s the 104th Birthday of the great Romanian conductor CONSTANTIN SILVESTRI (Bucharest May 21, 1913 - London, February 23, 1969).

Widely acclaimed internationally and in his own Country, Silvestri was invited to conduct the most important orchestras in the world, and he left numerous recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Paris orchestras of the French Radio and the Conservatory.
But Silvestri too worked with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, performing and recording with them, in 1960, Dmitry Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, as much as I know the first time the Wiener delivered a work of this composer.

From the early 1960s until to his premature death due to an incurable desease, Silvestri served as chief-conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, he shaped into an very high artistical and technical standard ensemble as proved - among many recordings - by this Rimsky-Korsakov Sheherazade recorded December 30 and 31, 1966.

Scheherazade - as it’s well known – since a long has gained its permanent place into the repertorie of all the most distinguished conductors, still this performance delivered by the great Romanian is absolutely special for its masterly technique and the intensity by which it returns the expressive meanings and the atmospheres of the suite, both permeated by sublime Oriental melodies & themes and greatly descriptive of the sea, the rising of the waves and, as epilogue, the shipwreck of Sinbad's ship against a legendary “magnetic rock” dominated by the bronze statue of a warrior on horseback.

A truly representative sample of the mastery of Constantin Silvestri, strongly deserving to be known and appreciated

There apparently was an excellent stereo recording of this concert that was used for the Simpson, Liszt, and Respighi, far superior to the broadcast sound here. I would dearly love to have Wagner from that tape as it is beautifully played. The high quality stereo versions can be found on:

Metamorphosis: The Transformation of the Bournemouth Symphony

This documentary tells the story of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's rise to international acclaim while under the baton of Maestro Constantin Silvestri. Ray Carpenter (1922-2017), the symphony's principal clarinet, shares his memories along with historic materials—photographs, excerpts of musical recordings, newspaper clippings, and programs. Ray provides insight into his own musical coming-of-age as well as musical life during the Silvestri (1961-1969) years. Despite his short tenure with the symphony, Maestro Silvestri managed to transform a provincial band to an orchestra whose performances were praised in and beyond London.

00:00 - Lento lugubre. Manfred wanders in the Alps. Weary of the fatal question of existence, tormented by hopeless longings and the memory of past crimes, he suffers cruel spiritual pangs. He has plunged into occult sciences and commands the mighty powers of darkness, but neither they nor anything in this world can give him the forgetfulness to which alone he vainly aspires. The memory of the lost Astarte, once passionately loved, gnaws his heart and there is neither limit nor end to Manfred's despair.

22:41 - Vivace con spirito. The Alpine fairy appears before Manfred in the rainbow from the spray of a waterfall.

35:44 - Andante con moto. A picture of the bare, simple, free life of the mountain folk.

51:31 - Allegro con fuoco. The subterranean palace of Arimanes. Infernal orgy. Appearance of Manfred in the middle of the bacchanal. Evocation and appearance of the shade of Astarte. He is pardoned. Death of Manfred.
