  • Gary McFarland - Bloop Bleep

    2:27

Gary McFarland - Bloop Bleep, off the album The In Sound.

    About Gary McFarland:

Gary McFarland (October 23, 1933 – November 3, 1971) was an influential composer, arranger, vibraphonist and vocalist, prominent on Verve and Impulse! Records during the 1960s, when he made one of the more significant contributors to orchestral jazz.

McFarland was born in Los Angeles, on October 23, 1933, but grew up in Grants Pass, Oregon. He attained a small following after working with Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, Johnny Hodges, John Lewis, Stan Getz, Bob Brookmeyer, and Anita O'Day.

As well as his own albums and arrangements for other musicians he composed the scores to the films Eye of the Devil (1966) and Who Killed Mary What's 'Er Name? (1971). By the end of the 1960s he was moving away from jazz towards an often wistful or melancholy style of instrumental pop, as well as producing the recordings of other artists on his Skye Records label (run in partnership with Gábor Szabó and Cal Tjader until its bankruptcy in 1970).

McFarland was considering a move into writing and arranging for film and stage when, on November 3, 1971, he was poisoned with methadone in a New York City bar.

Bill Evans recorded Gary's Theme in 1977.

He has 19 releases as of 2017:

1961: The Jazz Version of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying
1963: The Gary McFarland Orchestra: Special Guest Soloist: Bill Evans
    1963: Point of Departure
    1964: Soft Samba
1965: Tijuana Jazz with Clark Terry
    1965: The In Sound
    1966: Soft Samba Strings
    1966: Profiles
    1966: Simpático with Gábor Szabó
1966: Eye of the Devil (soundtrack)
1967: The October Suite with Steve Kuhn
1968: Does the Sun Really Shine on the Moon?
1968: America the Beautiful: An Account of Its Disappearance
    1968: Scorpio and Other Signs
    1969: Today
1971: Butterscotch Rum with Peter Smith (Buddah Records)
1972: Requiem for Gary McFarland (Cobblestone Records)
2014: Jazz at The Penthouse (CD album of a club date from 1965, included with the DVD documentary This Is Gary McFarland!)

    LYRICS:
    I’m ashes, post-flame
    All the coal that disintegrates
I’ll just lie here quietly, sink into the earth’s defeat
As I watched you grow dull, wonder how you stay so cold
    Always knew something was wrong
Never chose to play along, here

So sit down, shut off, I don’t know how I let you lead so long
Cause right now you’re only holding me back
Cause I’m not where I want to be, and you’re not who I wish you were
So I’ll rest my eyes and we’ll try in another life

While I was eating off the floor, alone and drowning in my thoughts
Your gut was full, still wanting more
    You wanted more

I walk this road, behind you now
I feel so lost, cause you’re never gonna turn around
Down cobblestone, I scream your name
I fight your past, cause you’re never gonna feel the same

Drown myself in this peaceful lake
Feel the water pull me away
Maybe there’s a place for us down here someday
I’ll see you again someday; I promise I’ll see you someday
Cause I’m not where I want to be, no you’re not who I wish you were
So I’ll rest my eyes and we’ll try in another life

  • The Rain - Peculiar Situation Thor / Cobblestone, 1968

    2:40

The Rain from north-central Illinois (LaSalle-Peru, Spring Valley, Dixon) : John Mark Edmunds, Dick Verucchi, Les Lockridge and Dick Hally covering the Hollies' Peculiar Situation. Released on Thor Records as the Rain and again as the Golden Haze on Cobblestone. The recordings are the same. It is unclear which was released first. Both are likely from 1968.

The Rain A-side, Love's Funny Like That is an original tune written by Edmunds: . The Golden Haze A-side Have You Ever Loved Somebody, is another Hollies' cover. You can hear it on the Downstate Sounds radio show #46:

The group performed regularly as the Rain. It is likely the name Golden Haze was used only for this single. The group later changed their name to Stronghold and recorded an album for RCA but only a promo single was released:

Several members of the group eventually went on to form the country-rock group Buckacre.

Insanely RARE 1968 unissued, unpromoted, unlisted in-house Jazz Funker from the desk Monk Higgins and Mamie Galore. And there is no evidence this 45 project even got mailed out to radio stations...

At atmospheric Chicago jazz/funk groove saturated in mystic, as this is only the 2nd. copy to break surface this century, added to the fact nobody seems to know who Paul Slide is? Either the man who supplied the Moog background or a pseudonym for Monk Higgins himself?

Monk Higgins calls upon his long-guided Soul Sister and recording artist Mamie P. Galore for her input into this moody, sultry fusion of bass guitar pulse, piano and saxophone layered over a swirling Moog backdrop. The effect is mesmeric as Monk Higgins reveals another aspect to his vast talents. An inventive Jazzy/Soul journey of pure class, featuring his highly skilled saxophone manipulation.

We cannot emphasize the off-the-scale rarity this 45 commands, a conundrum offering another dimension to Monk's already impressive work, but answering no questions to why this recording was never promoted in any significant way other than this copy being sent the British EMI for review... thickening the plot even further.

With the slick Jazz/Soul of Cozy Eggleton - Moon Ray - currently capturing the imagination of the Rare Soul curious.. unlike Moon Ray Lost Soul Disposition is unlikely to ever turn up again.

    Condition Report
a flawless archive copy pressed in VINYL is pristine in every way.
