  • The Extended Play Sessions with Chris Smither

    47:00

Chris Smither has been creating music for over 50 years. At the age of 70 he has now begun to reflect back on a rich body of work that paints the human condition with broad strokes, rich hues and delicate precision. He is an artist in the truest sense of the word and a gifted and brilliant self taught guitarist. His performance on The Extended Play Sessions was one of the most memorable.

    Can't you see? I can't explain
I'm a little like a link of chain
    Just a ring around another
    Runnin' in and out again
Fly me on a kite line
    Smilin' like a gold mine
I don't need to do right
    Go to the end
That'll do to hold me tonight

    Mornin' rain, make it soon
Just a little in the afternoon
To hold me like a mother

Hang me on the evenin' moon
Set me on a low one
Show me how to go one
    More whenever I finally decide
    Go to the end
And take it along for the ride

    Well I ain't got long
    I leave 'fore day
And I never had a lot to say
    Tell me like a brother

Do we throw it all away
    Sittin' on the side line
    Foolin' with a fine mind
Never need to know the desire
    Go to the end
Play it right down to the wire

    Go to the end
Play it right down to the wire

    Can't you see? I can't explain
I'm a little like a link of chain
    Just a ring around another
    Runnin' in and out again

  • Chris Smither - Sittin on Top of the World | Fretboard Journal

    3:24

Singer-songwriter Chris Smither has a unique approach to his cover of the Mississippi Sheiks’ “Sitting on Top of the World.” “I learned [it] 50 years ago and I just thought to myself, ‘I should slow this down because it’s not really a happy song,” he says of the often interpreted classic. “It’s bittersweet instead of being a joyful thing.”

This is just one of many great covers found on Smither’s 2018 double-album album, 'Call Me Lucky.' On this track, he’s playing his custom Collings 000 with a 12-fret, short scale neck, cutaway and a solid peghead.

Listen to our interview with Smither on songwriting, guitars and more on the Fretboard Journal Podcast:

    Well, Eve told Adam
    Snakes? I've had 'em!
    Let's get outta here!
Go raise this family someplace outta town.

They left the garden just in time
With the landlord cussin' right behind.
    They headed East,
    and they finally settled down.

    One thing led to another;
    A bunch of sons,
    One killed his brother
And they kicked him out with nothin' but his clothes.

    And the human race survived
'Cause all those brothers found wives
    But where they came from
    There ain't nobody knows.

    Then came the flood
    Go figure...
Just like New Orleans only bigger.
No one who couldn't swim would make it through.

The lucky ones were on a boat
    Think circus
    And then make it float
I hope nobody pulls the plug on you!

How they fed that crowd is a mystery.
It ain't down in the history,
    but it's a cinch they didn't
    live on cakes and jam.

    Lions don't eat cabbage
And in spite of that old adage,
    I ain't never seen one
    Lie down with a lamb.

Well, Charlie Darwin looked so far
    Into the way things are.
He caught a glimpse of God's
    unfolding plan.

God said: I'll make some DNA
They can use it any way they want
    From paramecium
    Right up to man.

    They'll have sex
And mix up sections of their code
    They'll have mutations...
The whole thing works like clockwork over time.

I'll just sit back in the shade
    While everyone gets laid.
    That's what I call
    Intelligent design.

Yeah, you and your cat named Felix,
Both wrapped up in that double helix,
    Is what we call
    Intelligent design.

Earlier this spring, American acoustic folk-blues treasure Chris Smither stopped by the AG studios to play a couple of songs off Call Me Lucky, his first release of all-new studio material since 2012’s Hundred Dollar Valentine.

Experiencing Smither’s dazzling fingerpicking and songwriting prowess first-hand makes it easy to see why he’s been a mainstay on the folk club/coffeehouse/festival circuit since the 1960s—and why heavyweights such as Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Mary Gauthier, and Peter Case, to name just a few, have been drawn to his songs.

In this Session, Smither performs three hauntingly beautiful tunes: “The Blame’s On Me,” “By the Numbers, and “Everything on Top.” Call us lucky!

Chris Smither Live at McCabe's 6-29-2012
Time Stands Still (by Chris Smither)
    Lyrics:
I've been blind, she's been kind.
She knows at times I forget to see.
    Through a cold dark cloud,
An imaginary shroud or a shadow settles over me.
I once was smart, it was back at the start.
I offered her my body and my soul.
    Thought in my heart it would tear me apart;
    It made me whole.

Keep it simple, keep it clear. It's what we like to hear.
She don't argue, she don't ever lie.
If I say it's so, it's so. She don't want to know
If it's a metaphor or something in disguise.
She let me know, a long time ago
It's better to say just what I mean.
Truth to tell it can hurt like hell,
    But it keeps me clean.

My guiding star, I don't stray far.
I keep her in my mind and in my eye.
I've been lost before, but never any more.
I just look up at my compass in the sky.
I had my fears, in the early years,
That I'd locked me up and throw'd away the key
I lost my mind to the ties that bind,
    But it set me free

Oh she's fast, I know I'll never ask,
She's by me now but I don't really mind
I hardly know, I'm oh so slow,
My shadow often kicks me from behind.
I once was fast, in the distant past.
In a mighty demonstration of my will,
I kissed her twice at the speed of light.
    Time stood still.

I kissed her twice at the speed of light,
    And time stood still.

CHRIS SMITHER is truly an American original. For over 50 years, Smiother draws deeply from the blues, American folk music, modern poets, and philosophers. He’s forged lifelong friendships with many musicians, including Bonnie Raitt who went on to record his songs, “Love You Like A Man” and “I Feel the Same. Smither recently released his eighteenth record, ‘Call Me Lucky’ on Signature Sounds/Mighty Albert. It’s arguably his best.

SAM MORROW has found his footing as an artist and appears poised to join the ranks of a member of Los Angeles’ country elite. He was recently named by Rolling Stone as 10 New Country Artists You Need to Know. At 27 years old, Morrow has released a confident career-defining album ‘Concrete and Mud’ on Forty Below Records. It’s rooted in Texas twang, southern stomp, and old-school funky-tonk.
