  • 3 Things You Need To Know For Chord Melody

    7:34

Chord Melody is Melody with Chords, so you take a melody and then you add chords to it. This is a way to play both harmony and melody of a song and you can do a lot of different things with chord melody arrangements and really add a beautiful other dimension to the song you are playing, making it a solo performance.

This video is taking a look at some important aspects of playing and making chord melody arrangements. Focusing on some different things that most people forget to consider.

0:00 Intro - It is Melody with Chords not Chords With A Melody
0:25 3 Things to get right for your own chord melody arrangements

Moon River was written by Henry Mancini. It's most known from Audrey Hepburns performance in the movie Breakfast At Tiffany's.

I made my jazz guitar chord melody arrangement as easy as possible without making it sound bland. I use beautiful jazz guitar chords along with the melody, which is played simultaniously to the chords.

This version of Moon River guitar instrumental can be played alone, so you don't need other instruments (that's more money for you for the gig, lol).

I've also made the Moon River TABS and a Moonriver Backing Track. The Backing track is taylored to this very jazz guitar turorial of Moon River.

You'll learn the Jazz guitar chords for this beautiful tune.

If you like this Moonriver guitar tutorial please give it a thumbs up and share the knowledge.

  • SMILE - Guitar Lesson - Chord Melody Jazz Guitar Tutorial

    25:37

Note for note explanation on Jazz standard SMILE by Charlie Chaplin. Jazz chords + harmoizing the melody in 6ths. + TAB

    Lesson material (TABS etc):

IMPORTANT: You will receive an email with the download link. Make sure to check your spam / junk folder, if you can't find it in your inbox!
    ***************************************

Smile is a really lovely tune written by Charlie Chaplin. Yes, exactly the actor. It has ever since ben a jazz standard performed at many a jazz session.

In this jazz guitar lesson you'll learn how to harmonize the Smile melody in 6ths. I've made a chord melody guitar arrangement. I've put a jazz guitar chord on each new chord change an harmonized the melody in between in intervalls of sixths. This way it's easier to play and still sounds harmonically rich. 6ths are included in many chord voicings, so the listener hears them as chords.

This is one of my easy chord melody arrangements. But I'v tried to arrange SMILE guitar instrumental as interesting as possible. If you're not an absolute beginner this SMILE guitar tutorial should be doable for most of you guys n gals ;-)

You'll learn the Smile guitar chords along with the melody and learning this tune will improve your playing a lot. You'll get to know a new system on how to harmonize a melody and add chords and 6ths to it.

You can play Smile guitar fingerstyle or hybrid picking. I wouldn't recommend strumming though.

I've made the Smile guitar tab, which you can download from the link above. I've also made two nice Smile backing tracks for you. One is at regular tempo, the second one a little slower, so you can start practicing right away.

I hope you like my Smile guitar lesson and give this guitar tutorial a thumbs up. Also please, share the knowledge and subscribe my channel.

    ***************************************

Blue Moon is one of those jazz standards you just can't get out of your ear. It was performed by such jazz greats as Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and even Elvis Presley san it.

It's a fairly easy song with mostly Turnarounds (I-VI-II-V chord progression) going on.
For this jazz guitar lesson I arranged Blue Moon chord melody style, so you can play the guitar chords and the melody simultaniously. This is also called a guitar instrumental for blue Moon.

The jazz guitar chords for Blue Moon are quite easy to play. The only thing that may be a challenge for an intermediate palyer with a bit of jazz experience, is the tempo. It's amedium swing standard. But played in chord melody style, the changes appear rather quick. But other than that Blue Moon should be absolutly manageble by any intermediate jazz guitar player.

This guitar tutorial shows you everything note for note. I'll explain each and every chord in that jazz standard. How to fret it, what to watch out for and give you some good advice.

Accompaning this jazz guitar lesson, I've also made the Blue Moon tabs and two backing tracks. One at regular, mid tempo spedd, the other one is for you to practice at slow tempo.

Well here ya go, no excuses anymore not to learn this great jazz version of Blue Moon.

I hope you dig my new Blue Moon chord melody lesson and give it a fat thumbs up :-).

    ***************************************

Many of you wanted to know how to play My Funny Valentine on guitar. So here's my chord melody lesson on this great jazz standard.

I arranged this great jazz ballad, My Funny Valentine guitar tutorial as an intermediate chord melody song. This is also a good lesson on how to use block chords in chord melody arrangemnts, bc I put a guitar chord on each note of the melody. You should play this at free tempo, since that's not an easy task. But since it's a jazz ballad you can choose your own tempo or play completely rubato (free).

It includes the My Funny Valentine guitar chords , as well as the melody. So it's actually a guitar solo piece, that you need no other to play with. You can play it on your own, since all relevant parts, like the guitar chords, the bassline and the melody is already included. So you get a full My Funny Valentine Chord Melody lesson package.

My Funny Valentine Guitar Chords :
The guitar chords for this jazz tune aren`t too difficult. I arrenged the entire song in jazz guitar block chords, though. That may be a little hard for a jazz guitar beginner and that's exactly why I graded it intermediate level chord melody guitar.

I'm providing you with a My Funny Valentine guitar TAB, which you can download from the link above.

I hope you like my chord melody arrangement of My Funny Valentine jazz guitar lesson and give this video a thumbs up. Seubscribe my channel for many more great chord melody tutorials! Check out my palylists!

  • Lesson: Introduction to Chord Melodies

    15:45

This video introduces a couple of concepts that are key in constructing chord melodies.

    1. The fewer the notes in the chord voicing, the easier it is for individual notes to stand out which is a goal in creating melodies. Occasionally it's appropriate to use all six strings, but generally I try not to.

    2. The top note is the melody note. This is what the listener will hear as the melody. Creating chord melodies is really all about putting care into choosing the top note.

If you have any questions, post them below and I'll do my best to get to you! Cheers :)

    LESSON DESCRIPTION:
This week's lesson is a thorough introduction on how to arrange chord melodies on the guitar using a three step process. Chord melody is one of the coolest yet most elusive guitar techniques out there. To pull it off we have to harmonize nearly every note of a melody with a supporting chord shape. I've broken the process down into three steps, and it works on jazz, folk, or pop songs alike. I walk through those three steps using the Happy Birthday melody, and then again using the jazz standard Blue Bossa. Everything is written out with notation and TABS so you can follow along and try it for yourself. Once you can arrange chord melodies for yourself it will feel like a super power :) I hope you enjoy!

    My website:

I hope this chord melody guitar lesson helps to demystify what it takes to make chord melodies from scratch. Obviously knowing inversion shapes is a huge help in working out chord melodies on the fretboard, so I may be doing some videos in the future specifically on mapping out inversions all over the guitar. Let me know if there are any chord melodies that you’re working on after watching this video. :)

  • Chord Melody - This is How To Play Solos

    11:14

You already play chord melody guitar arrangements of standards, but Improvising in a solo guitar setting where you are playing chords and an improvised melody can be really difficult and seem impossible to learn.

In this video I am going to show you how to use chords as a position to create a scale where you can improvise with and in that way solo in a Chord Melody setting.

This is one of the ways I approach improvising in a solo guitar setting and it is technically much less demanding than trying to for example harmonize every melody note. In fact you can probably get started right away, and a bonus is that practicing this will make you a lot better at making your own chord melody arrangements.

This video came about because I was making videos for my Patrons discussing how I prepared a solo gig. It was a request to demonstrate one of the approaches I use for soloing.

Are you a full time YouTuber?
Yes guys, I am a full time as Marco Cirillo on my YouTube channel and I promote my videos on my website BlitzGuitar.com. All the courses I post online are available on my Patreon page

How long have you been playing guitar for?
I started playing guitar when I was 10 years old so it has been more than 20 years. I have always loved fingerpicking guitar so this is why all my tutorials focus on this topic.

    Why are you on Patreon?
Patreon is great! It allows creators to make money doing what they love. On Patreon I can share my guitar lessons with my Patreon and get payed for it. As a creator I feel like Patreon really made a huge difference in the way I share my content :)

    Do you do Concerts?
I used to do a lot of gigs before. London is a great place to play music every single day. However, since my YouTube channel grew I decided I was going to try to help as many people as possible learning guitar. This is a full time job that doesn't leave space for gigging. I am super happy of the decision I made :)

Jazz Guitar: Turn your chords into chord melody! - Jazz Guitar Lesson

Ted Greene said : harmonize your melodies, melodize your chords!
    (I'm paraphrasing here)

Ever wondered how to play nice chord melody arrangements like the jazz guitar legends? Are you looking for what shapes to use to accompany melodies from great jazz standards?

I believe a great starting point is to find many uses for the same chord. In this short video, I'll show you how to find *melodic* possibilities inside common jazz guitar chord shapes.

Highly recommended, Ted Greene's Modern Chord Progressions book here:

You start trying to melodize your chords (and harmonize your melody) with a selection of pre-arranged jazz guitar standards. Chord melody + chord shapes included in every PDF:

  • Stompin At The Savoy - Chord Melody Lesson

    11:12

Here's a finger-style chord melody lesson, this time of one of my favorite standards associated with the swing era: Stompin' at the Savoy. It's a timeless standard that first became a hit by the Benny Goodman Orchestra way back in 1936. And it just so happens that it really works great as a solo piece on guitar!
Featured in the song's melody is a very cool harp style major 6th arpeggio which I teach you to play by combining open and fretted strings! The video features both regular notation and tab.
