  • Lesson: Introduction to Chord Melodies

    15:45

Hey all :) If you like this tutorial and want to see more, definitely go check out my Patreon!

This video introduces a couple of concepts that are key in constructing chord melodies.

    1. The fewer the notes in the chord voicing, the easier it is for individual notes to stand out which is a goal in creating melodies. Occasionally it's appropriate to use all six strings, but generally I try not to.

    2. The top note is the melody note. This is what the listener will hear as the melody. Creating chord melodies is really all about putting care into choosing the top note.

If you have any questions, post them below and I'll do my best to get to you! Cheers :)

  • 3 Things You Need To Know For Chord Melody

    7:34

Chord Melody is Melody with Chords, so you take a melody and then you add chords to it. This is a way to play both harmony and melody of a song and you can do a lot of different things with chord melody arrangements and really add a beautiful other dimension to the song you are playing, making it a solo performance.

This video is taking a look at some important aspects of playing and making chord melody arrangements. Focusing on some different things that most people forget to consider.

0:00 Intro - It is Melody with Chords not Chords With A Melody
0:25 3 Things to get right for your own chord melody arrangements
0:47 #1 Play The Melody on the top strings.
1:30 Example Body And Soul melody
1:45 Chord Melody Arrangement - Body And Soul
2:14 Finding Chords for the melody
3:23 #2 Chords on The Heavy Beats - Keep it playable
3:45 Don't get lost in block harmony and too many embellishments
4:09 Fly Me To The Moon Example
4:50 #3 Phrase and Emphasize the melody

    ****************************************************************

This video is a jazz guitar lesson on Bluesette, written by Toots Thielemans. It's a double length Blues with 24 bars in 3/4 meter. This makes this great jazz standard really interesting. It's rather fast, but I'll teach you note for note, slow and easy and I also have a slow tempo version of my Bluesette chord melody arrangement at the end of this guitar lesson.

I tried to make an easy to intermediate version of Bluesette chord melody, but with interesting chord voicings, that don't sound bland. This is a real, authentic jazz arrangement!

My Bluesette chord melody guitar tutorial features a bunch of nice sounding jazz chords, which I'll also let you know the theory behind them. I'll often explain, why I've chosen certain chords to go along with the melody and what their function within the song is. I think this kind of information is very helpful, else you would just learn Bluesette chord melody by heart, without the slightest knowledge of what you're actually doing. As a teacher, that's really not my goal.

You'll also learn the Bluesette chord progression with it's 24 bars, so you'll understand how it's made. This applies to many major Blues forms as well.

I've made the Bluesette TAB and Backing Tracks, which you can download from one of the links up above.

So with the Bluesette chord melody Tab and the video lesson all in front of you, you have a nice lesson all together. When you've finished the basic walk through, you can play along with the Bluesette Backing Track.

I'm glad I can provide you with the full package of Bluesette chord melody jazz guitar lesson and hope you like it. If so, please don't forget to give me a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel to never miss any of my new ( chord melody ) tutorials.

  • Chord Melody - This is How To Play Solos

    11:14

You already play chord melody guitar arrangements of standards, but Improvising in a solo guitar setting where you are playing chords and an improvised melody can be really difficult and seem impossible to learn.

In this video I am going to show you how to use chords as a position to create a scale where you can improvise with and in that way solo in a Chord Melody setting.

This is one of the ways I approach improvising in a solo guitar setting and it is technically much less demanding than trying to for example harmonize every melody note. In fact you can probably get started right away, and a bonus is that practicing this will make you a lot better at making your own chord melody arrangements.

This video came about because I was making videos for my Patrons discussing how I prepared a solo gig. It was a request to demonstrate one of the approaches I use for soloing.

    28:52

Very detailed + TABS! Jazz guitar lesson for Beautiful Love. Easy chord melody guitar lesson jazz ballad.

    TABS:

I´m teaching you this beautiful jazz guitar ballad in chord melody style, which means the melody and the chords are being played simultaniously.

Beautiful Love is a jazz ballad in a minor key. Since it is often played at jazz sessions, you should be able to play this tune.

    Chord melody jazz guitar style:
The chord melody style combines the melody of the song and it`s chords together. Usually someone does the comping and another person plays the melody. The chord meldoy style allows guitarists to play on their own, just like pianist. So you can perform it allone. Beautiful Love is a slow song, so it won`t be too hard to play. This is a good oportunity to learn a chord melody song.

    **********************************************************

Blue Moon is one of those jazz standards you just can't get out of your ear. It was performed by such jazz greats as Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and even Elvis Presley san it.

It's a fairly easy song with mostly Turnarounds (I-VI-II-V chord progression) going on.
For this jazz guitar lesson I arranged Blue Moon chord melody style, so you can play the guitar chords and the melody simultaniously. This is also called a guitar instrumental for blue Moon.

The jazz guitar chords for Blue Moon are quite easy to play. The only thing that may be a challenge for an intermediate palyer with a bit of jazz experience, is the tempo. It's amedium swing standard. But played in chord melody style, the changes appear rather quick. But other than that Blue Moon should be absolutly manageble by any intermediate jazz guitar player.

This guitar tutorial shows you everything note for note. I'll explain each and every chord in that jazz standard. How to fret it, what to watch out for and give you some good advice.

Accompaning this jazz guitar lesson, I've also made the Blue Moon tabs and two backing tracks. One at regular, mid tempo spedd, the other one is for you to practice at slow tempo.

Well here ya go, no excuses anymore not to learn this great jazz version of Blue Moon.

I hope you dig my new Blue Moon chord melody lesson and give it a fat thumbs up :-).

  • Best exercise for jazz guitar chord solos! - Brain and fingers!

    16:09

Chord solos have been a part of the Jazz Guitar skill set since the 50's and 60's when players like Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery used it in their music. A Chord solo is a harmonized melody line, so you don't only improvise a melody, you also harmonize it by adding chords to it.

This might seem a little scary to start working on, but if what you want to work on is harmonising melodies. One of the simplest melodies you can harmonize is a scale, so in this lesson I will take an F major scale and show you how you can harmonize it with both some chords and some progressions.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow was made famous by the great Judy Garland in the movie The Wizard Of Oz. Since people kept asking me about, how to play Somewhere Over The Rainbow on guitar , I decied to make this guitar tutorial.
This is an intermediate level guitar lesson. You can play fingerpicking or hyprid picking.

The Somewhere Over The Rainbow guitar chords are not really hard to play. The focus is on the dynamics - my chord melody arrangement is rubato, which means free time. Make sure to play the fillers quiet, while the melody notes are being stressed.

In a chord melody arrangement the guitar chords and the melody are played simultaniously. So you're basically a one man band playing this guitar solo.

I've made the Somewhere Over The Rainbow guitar TABS, which can be purchased from one of the above links. I also have the Guitar Pro 7 TABS for Over The Rainbow.

If you want to, you can support me on Patreon and automatically get these tabs as a reward.

Solo guitar arrangement of the 1930 standard by Edward Heyman, Robert Sour, Frank Eyton and Johnny Green.

    from Wikipedia:

Body and Soul was written in New York City for the British actress and singer Gertrude Lawrence, who introduced it to London audiences. Published in England, it was first performed in the United States by Libby Holman in the 1930 Broadway revue Three's a Crowd. In Britain the orchestras of Jack Hylton and Ambrose recorded the ballad first in the same week in February 1930. In the United States,[1] the tune grew quickly in popularity, and by the end of 1930 at least 11 American bands had recorded it.[1] Louis Armstrong was the first jazz musician to record Body and Soul, in October 1930,[2] but it was Paul Whiteman and Jack Fulton who popularized it in United States.

Body and Soul is one of the most recorded jazz standards, and multiple lyrics have been written for it.[1]

    Musical characteristics
Body and Soul is usually performed in the key of D flat major. There is a verse that precedes the chorus, that is rarely performed, although recordings by both Libby Holman and Billie Holiday include it. The main part of the tune consists of a repeated eight-bar melody, followed by an eight-bar bridge and a final eight-bar return to the melody. The 32-bar AABA form is typical of popular songs of the time.[3] The A section uses conventional chord progressions including ii–V–I turnarounds in the home key of D flat, however the bridge is highly unusual in its tonal center shifts. It has been described as a bridge like no other.[4] Body and Soul is considered a challenging piece to solo over; however, the unusual nature of the chords provides a large degree of improvisational freedom.[1]

One of the most famous and influential takes was recorded by Coleman Hawkins and His Orchestra on October 11, 1939, at their only recording session for Bluebird, a subsidiary of RCA Victor. The recording is unusual in that the song's melody is only hinted at in the recording; Hawkins' two-choruses of improvisation over the tune's chord progression constitute almost the entire take.[5] Because of this, as well as the imaginative use of harmony and break from traditional swing cliches, the recording is recognised as part of the early tremors of bebop.[6] In 2004, the Library of Congress entered it into the National Recording Registry.[7][8]

Body and Soul was recorded as a duet by Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse on March 23, 2011.[9] It was the final recording made by Winehouse before her death on July 23, 2011 at the age of 27. The single was released worldwide on September 14, 2011, what would have been her 28th birthday, on iTunes, MTV and VH1.

When the song reached number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week of October 1, 2011, it made Bennett, at age 85, the oldest living artist ever to chart on the Hot 100, surpassing the previous record of George Burns. This record was then surpassed by Christopher Lee in 2013. It also gave Bennett the longest overall span of appearances on the Hot 100; his version of Young and Warm and Wonderful appeared on the very first Hot 100 chart for the week of August 4, 1958.[10] The song received a Grammy Award at the 54th Grammy Awards in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category on February 12, 2012. Proceeds from Body and Soul go to benefit The Amy Winehouse Foundation, an organization created to raise awareness and support for young adults struggling with addiction.[11]

In this guitar lesson, Jon MacLennan will teach you a cool chord melody exercise in the style of Joe Pass.
Ok, so... What is chord melody? Chord melody is simple a melody played with chords. There are different approaches since we can play one chord for each note of the melody, or more notes per chord. Also we can play the melody with different note range, like using the lower, middle or highest note of the chord.
Joe Pass was born in 1929 and passes away in 1994. He was an Italian-American jazz guitarist often considered as one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all times.
He did the best and extensive use of harmonic and melodic counterpoint during improvisation, using chord-melody style of playing opening up new possibilities for jazz guitar and guitarists.
Try this very slow at first and then start to increase the speed gradually. Also don´t forget to come up with your own ideas, which is the best advice for starting to find `your´ unique sound and style.
That is all for today... Anyway, keep enjoying and learning from Jon MacLennan and all the staff at Guitarcontrol.com!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In A Sentimental Mood is one of the best know jazz ballads, composed by Duke Ellington. It's one

of the top 50 Jazz Standards every jazz guitarist should have in their repertoire. It's a

pleasure to present you my guitar tutorial on this amazing jazz standard.

In this jazz guitar lesson I teach you my chord melody arrangement of this great jazz ballad. I

transposed In A Sentimental Mood to the key of G /Em, in order to take advantage of the open E

and A strings. My chord melody arrangement sounds quiet mellow and dark in the A section, while I

transposed the B section up one octave to brighten things up a bit.

I teach you all the In A Sentimental Mood guitar chords needed for the general song and weave the

melody in between or on top of the chords. This is called chord melody playin or a guitar

instrumental. There are great sounding jazz guitar chords and voicings in this song.
I've arranged this jazz guitar tutorial for intermediate players. It is suitable for the ambitios

beginner as well as intermediate guitar players.
The advantage of a jazz guitar ballad is always the slow tempo, so you have plenty of time in

between to recall the next chord.

While my chord melody arrangement of In A Sentimental Mood is not too hard to play it doesn't

    sound bland either.

I explain every step of what I do. I show every fingering of the chord melody song.

I've also made the In A Sentimental Mood TABS for you to download and study. There is also a

Guitar Pro version, so you can buy the PDF guitar tab or the Guitar Pro file tabs.
I also made a backing track, so you can start practicing In A Sentimental Mood right away.

  • Jazz Guitar Lesson - Jazz Chord Melody in the Style of Barney Kessel

    2:19

Jazz Guitar Lesson - Jazz Chord Melody in the Style of Barney Kessel

    Get tabs here

In this guitar lesson, Jon MacLennan will teach you a jazz chord melody trick in the style of Barney Kessel. And the chord progression is one of the most common progressions in jazz called II V I, so if you want to get into jazz guitar I really recommend you to check out this lesson. Sometimes we forget about being a good rhythm player, everyone wants to play leads and tons of licks, but we forget the art of rhythm guitar, and in this kind of music you HAVE to have a great harmony background.
So, what is II V I progression? This refers to the degrees of a diatonic scale. As you may know a diatonic scale has 7 degrees or notes so we will be using the 2nd, the 5th and the root or 1st degree. In C major tonality the chords would be Dm7, G7 and Cmaj7.

And also if you don't know Barney Kessel you should check him out... He was an American jazz guitarist born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA. Generally considered to be one of the greatest jazz guitarists of the 20th century, he was noted in particular for his vast knowledge of chords and inversions and chord-based melodies.
Alright, the example of today´s lesson like we already said, it is about this Barney Kessel chord melody over a II V I chord progression in G major. There is something interesting happening here, there´s a chord substitution over the 5th degree, we will play a II V of the fifth chord´s tritone.
Ok, hope this helps and don´t forget to come up with your own ideas, which is the best advice for starting to find `your´ unique sound and style. That is all for today... Also I suggest that you keep enjoying and learning from Jon MacLennan and all the staff of Guitarcontrol.com!

  • Learn A Jazz Blues Chord Melody - How to play Solo Guitar

    19:03

Playing Chord Melody solos when you are playing solo jazz guitar is something can seem very difficult. In this video I am going to go over an example of a Jazz Blues Chord Melody and how you might approach this, I think the easiest way to demonstrate this is to give you an example of how I do this and talk about what is going on and how to play it.

This lesson is made around a one chorus example of an improvised Chord Melody Solo. It is on a Jazz Blues in C with a fairly standard Jazz version of that chord progression. All the voicings are a pretty simple mix of Drop2, Drop3, and Shell-voicings.

    - Chord Melody Guitar Lesson - Easy Tips on How to Get the Melody Out of Chords

As a guitarist, you’re always looking for ways to understand both harmony and melody. In simple terms, harmony is the notes you play simultaneously, as in chords, and the melody is the notes you play one after the other, consecutively, as you do with licks and solos. This chord melody guitar lesson takes both harmony and melody into account and shows you how to draw a melody out of the chords.

Morgan begins by playing a simple open position G major chord followed by a G major scale in the same position. The scale, of course, contains all the notes that can safely be played over the G major. In this lesson, Morgan literally shows you how to continue playing the G major chord while adding each of the notes of the G major scale over the top of the chord.

Chord melody guitar playing is a useful technique, particularly if you are playing solo guitar and want to develop a full sound that doesn’t involve simply strumming chords. You don’t need to look for specific melody chords for guitar to accomplish this. The method of extracting a melody from a guitar chord shown in this chord melody guitar lesson can be applied to any chord.

There are a lot of melody guitar tabs available you can use as well. These charts will show a melody tabbed out with chords over them. By taking a look at the tabs and chords, you can see the notes of the chords are the notes that form the melody of the song.

This chord melody guitar lesson is a great lesson to master because it can not only help you better understand how harmony and melody work together, it gives you the skills you need for putting chords to a melody or improvising a solo over any given progression of chords.

Creating melodies on guitar or creating chord progressions to accompany melodies on guitar should be worked on together. Melody and harmony are two of the fundamentals of music, and alongside rhythm, they are the building blocks of great guitar playing.
