  • Chic - Good Times

    8:23

Good Times is a 1979 song composed by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. It was first recorded by their band, Chic, for their 1979 album, Risqué. In August of that year it became the band's second number one single on both the Billboard Hot 100 and soul singles chart. Along with the tracks, My Forbidden Lover, and My Feet Keep Dancing, Good Times reached number three on the disco charts. The song has become one of the most sampled tunes in music history, most notably in rap and hip-hop music. Billboard magazine named Good Times the number one R&B single for 1979.

The song is ranked #229 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The lyrics are largely based on Milton Ager's Happy Days Are Here Again. It also contains lines based on lyrics featured in About a Quarter to Nine made famous by Al Jolson. Nile Rodgers has stated that these depression-era lyrics were used as a hidden way to comment on the then-current economic depression in the United States.

Chic is an American band that was organized during 1976 by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards. It is known best for its commercially successful disco songs, including Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah) (1977), Everybody Dance (1977), Le Freak (1978), I Want Your Love (1978), Good Times (1979), and My Forbidden Lover (1979). The group regarded themselves as a rock band for the disco movement that made good on hippie peace, love and freedom. In October 2014, Chic was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the tenth time.

Good times, these are the good times
Leave your cares behind, these are the good times
Good times, these are the good times
Our new state of mind, these are the good times

    Happy days are here again
The time is right for makin' friends
Let's get together, how 'bout a quarter to ten
Come tomorrow, let's all do it again

Boys will be boys, better let them have their toys
Girls will be girls, cute pony tails and curls
Must put an end to this stress and strife
I think I want to live the sporting life

Time marches on, just can't wait
The clock keeps turning, why hesitate
You silly fool, you can't change your fate

Let's cut the rug, little jive and jitterbug
We want the best, we won't settle for less
    Don't be a drag, participate
Clams on the half shell and roller skates, roller skates

  • Chic - Everybody Dance

    4:24

Everybody Dance is the second single from the first album Chic by the band of the same name. It features Norma Jean Wright on lead vocals. Luther Vandross appears on background vocals. It was later heavily sampled by British pop group Steps on their UK number 1 Stomp in 2000 and by the Manic Street Preachers on their single (It's Not War) Just the End of Love in 2010. In 2011, the British singer Kimberley Walsh, recorded a cover of the song for the film Horrid Henry.
The song is featured in the Grand Theft Auto IV expansion pack The Ballad of Gay Tony on the radio station K109.

  • Chic - Sometimes You Win

    5:34

This track was also a would-be single in my opinion IF the powers that be at Atlantic Records had had any musical sense at all. It's also a shame that these other great tracks by Chic were generally shorter in length (hence the time-stretching). As with my previous Chic post here on my channel I have created an imaginary 12 Promo cover. Hope you like it!

  • Chic ~ I Want Your Love 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

    13:41

It's been 40 years since when this was #1 on the Disco chart for 7 weeks starting the week ending November 25, up to December 30, 1978 when the combo of Le Freak, Chic Cheer and I Want Your Love ruled the clubs. A seriously funky disco song with a groove that never ends, it doesn't build and break like the anthemic Le Freak but has this hypnotizing mix of polyrhythms that intoxicate, hypnotize and invigorate. I hope you like this new extended remix, I really enjoyed putting this one together...the fabulous and famous Chic string section open this sinuously sexy song remix of want and need, something we can all relate to. I love the strings in this one, so beautifully produced and performed by three women who are Cheryl Hong, Karen Milne and Marianne Carroll. They played on every Chic project starting with 1978's C'est Chic all the way to Real People in 1980, Sheila & B Devotion's Spacer and on Johnny Mathis' stillborn Chic produced I Love My Lady that finally saw official release in 2019. The new style the boys used for Johnny Mathis was more subdued and perfect for the time, but Mathis' manager and label felt that it did not advance his career and he was barely recognizable. I think that it would have been a hit, revitalizing Johnny's career and the remixes would have been out of this world had they gone ahead with the project back in 1980. Promo versions on vinyl made their way to some DJ's, notably Tee Scott who famously played some of the tracks on his radio show and bootlegs were being passed around the internet for years. There even was a website that had some of the tracks uploaded so you could listen to them and they finally got all the tracks up there some time ago, a few years before the official release of a few songs from I Love My Lady that made its appearance on Nile Rodgers Presents The Chic Organization* - Box Set Vol. 1 / Savoir Faire in 2010. I for one would still love to hear the demo for Le Freak with all its expletive deleted glory.

  • Chic ~ Dance Dance Dance 1977 Disco Purrfection Version

    13:03

Nile Rodgers relates that when Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah) was played at Billboard's 1977 Disco Convention the bass was so prominent that it was blowing speakers. Of that, I have no doubt as most DJ's at the time were boosting the bass to gut shaking levels out of songs like Fly Robin Fly and other songs where the bass was not really optimized. Then along comes this ready for the dance floor stomper with the bass perfectly produced without removing the sub-bass, along with the drums of the gods played by Tony Thompson that needed no embellishing. Chic was gunning for a production deal with Ashford & Simpson who had established a booming, live rhythm track on songs like Chaka Khan's I'm Every Woman, Diana Ross's The Boss and then their own Found A Cure. Thompson provided a solid back beat with his explosive drumming techniques and seasoned it with lots of snare that got filled out by Bernard Edwards supple basslines and Nile Rodgers incessantly catchy guitar scratching. The pair first met in 1970, just out of high school and played jazz clubs and beer dives in NYC. In 1972 they met drummer Tony Thompson to create a Roxy Music type art rock band and dubbed themselves The Big Apple Band. Did you know that Rodgers was once a guitarist with the Sesame Street touring band? Around the same time, he worked with Edwards in a black rock band (a la Living Colour who followed in those footsteps) called Allah & The Knife Wielding Punks. However the female voices in a rock band did not seem to work within the inherently macho world of rock and roll. Rodgers relates that when disco appeared on the scene it was like a gift from heaven, because disco was not about being black, white, male or female. Shopping themselves around, they were refused by every label they approached, and were even turned down TWICE by Atlantic Records, who eventually signed them. When Dance was recorded, the pair took the song to a DJ at The Night Owl in NYC who was already playing a couple of their songs. Once the pair saw the dance floor reaction, they decided to form a band and looked for a concept to wrap it in. Looking out at the dance floor, they saw the fine ladies and dapper gentlemen all dressed up in suits and cocktail dresses, very upscale, all boogieing down and realized that they had found it. The name was little harder, and they looked around to something elemental and simple like KISS, a band that they both idolized. After a few names got tossed around, the name Chic stood out. KISS had two repeated letters, so did Chic. Roxy, Chic and KISS all had four letters, it was almost as fate had decided the name for them. The concept of Chic evoked an upscale sophistication with a French sensibility that served them well. The liberal use of the Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah chant in Dance Dance Dance hearkened back to the dance marathons of the the 1930's via Gig Young's performance in the 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don't They. When I first heard this song, that is exactly where I remembered the chant from. Music is all about concept, cultural references and a turn of a phrase to create an earworm that enters your consciousness with something vaguely familiar, but totally new sounding. Dance made stars of Chic, but the original vocalist Norma Jean Wright left after that recording, Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin were brought on board to fill out the band. The song first peaked at #1 for eight weeks in October of 1977 then it went #6 on the Hot 100 and the R&B surveys. Vince Aletti notes that for his September 24, 1977 report on the NYC clubs that the original release was on Buddah, then part of Arista Records and that DJ only promo versions were to be available that week. In his October 8 column, he relates that Buddah and Atlantic Records both claimed to have purchased the rights to the song and both were rush releasing the song on their respective labels. Both labels were credited a a source of the song, but by October 29th, only Atlantic's release was being noted.

  • Chic ~ Le Freak 1978 Disco Purrfection Version

    9:23

Le Freak was written after a huge disappointment the pair experienced after being denied entry to Studio 54 to see Grace Jones perform. That fateful night was New Year's Eve 1977 and the duo had been invited by Grace to see her show and then meet to discuss a recording collaboration. The guys embodied the Chic fashion mystique, dressed themselves to the nines for the occasion, only to be shot down. Apparently, Grace had neglected to put them on the list. The doorman's surliness only added to their misery, but they hung out until 1AM hoping Grace would notice the oversight, who never did. They dejectedly left, picking up a bottle of champagne and walked over to Nile's apartment to salve their egos. Starting to jam with bass and guitar, they began working some serious music therapy along with some rather rude exhortations that perfectly expressed their disappointment. The first part of the song that came together was Bernard's guitar and then Niles wrote a bass part to compliment that. The chorus came next along with the spontaneous F words to help them blow off steam. A demo was made and the boys knew they were on their way. A change of lyric of F*ck Off to Freak Off advanced the song one more level and then they blew it into the stratosphere when they changed Off to Out after they found out there was an actual Freak dance out there (remember the Freaky Deaky?). A final name change to Le Freak gave it international appeal miles away from the snarl of a song it started out as. I for one would love to hear the demo, Nile Rodgers could hopefully dig it out someday. At the time, Le Freak spent 5 weeks at #1 pop and R&B, a true crossover juggernaut that became the biggest non Christmas single ever, Warner Bros. biggest single ever and the third most copyrighted song in history after White Christmas at #1 and Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer at #2. It is the #8 disco song of all time according to the Billboard Hot Dance/Disco reference book. What am I doing remixing a stone cold classic? I thought maybe some DJ's would enjoy a integrated version to play off, and I wanted you to hear the mastery of the original's music and vocal tracks in breaks. 40 years later, this one still kicks butt inciting a stampede to the dance floor. Thank God for Chic, they really did save us from a life of drudgery by giving us the finest disco music ever created and a chance to unburden our cares on the dance floor.

Chic set a standard for disco and brought people together by successfully incorporating the then new sounds into them most soulful and heartfelt disco ever. I was chatting with Eddie Gordon who runs Kings Of Spins, a worldwide collective of DJ's. He mentioned that everyone has done all the Chic hits and why not try something offbeat like Chic Cheer...and that is how this one came to be. I've been very lucky being able to remix most of their classic productions, but a challenge is a challenge and I hope you enjoy this new disco version of the Chic chestnut, Chic Cheer. Some critics thought the song was self aggrandizing and said so, but I thought, what the hell, there were a lot less cool groups around and since Chic led us to the dancefloor numerous times, why not cheer themselves on, if you listen to the lyrics they ask you to join in, come celebrate with them! Thanks for the heads up Ed!

  • Chic with Nile Rodgers - Le Freak

    5:17

Chic was formed in the late seventies by Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards. They dominated the disco era with huge hit singles and albums on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition Rodgers worked as a songwriter and producer for the likes of Sister Sledge (We Are Family), Diana Ross (I'm Coming Up), David Bowie (Let's Dance), Madonna (Like A Virgin) and many more.

This amazing preformance shows just why Chic remain so popular. This song is taken from the full length concert DVD Live at Montruex 2004, available from Eagle Vision now.

Listen to us, I'm sure you'll be amazed
Big fun to be had by everyone
It's up to you, It surely can be done
Young and old are doing it, I'm told
Just one try, and you too will be sold
It's called Le Freak! They're doing it night and day
Allow us, we'll show you the way

    (CHORUS)

All that pressure got you down
Has your head spinning all around
Feel the rhythm, check the ride
Come on along and have a real good time
Like the days of stopping at the Savoy
Now we freak, oh what a joy
Just come on down, two fifty four
Find a spot out on the floor

    (CHORUS)

    Now Freak!
    I said Freak!
    Now Freak!

All that pressure got you down
Has your head spinning all around
Feel the rhythm, check the ride
Come on along and have a real good time
Like the days of stopping at the Savoy
Now we freak, oh what a joy
Just come on down, two fifty four
Find a spot out on the floor
