  • Curtis 20/21 Ensemble: Chen Yi, Composer in Residence

    2:16:50

This Friday, the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble presents a portrait of composer Chen Yi. Shaped by her experience coming of age during China's Cultural Revolution, Chen Yi embodies the edge effect: Her early influences include both Chinese traditional music and Western classical music. She is a master of contemporary technique and a strong advocate for music’s power to connect audiences of different cultural backgrounds.

  • Composer Chen Yi speaks about her background and composing

    4:36

As a part of Chen Yi's ChoralQuest residency, she sat down with students at Frontier Trail Middle School to talk about her life and her compositional approach.

Chen Yi's new choral work, Thinking of My Home was received its premiere performance by the Bel Canto Choir at Frontier Trails Middle School in Olathe, KS under the direction of Gretchen Harrison. “Thinking of My Home” is for treble clef choir and optional piano that sets a famous ancient Chinese poem with the same title by Li Bai in Tang Dynasty into music. The piece was commissioned by the American Composers Forum as a part of the ChoralQuest program. The score was published by the American Composers Forum and is distributed nationwide by the Hal Leonard Corporation.

  • Northern Scenes by Chen Yi

    6:49

Renowend composer Chen Yi's Northern Scenes from my recital last month. It is imaginative and expressive, with passionate and lyrical layers, in vertical soundscapes and space. The following lines of words show the images that inspired the composer to compose the music: In the north, the vast and magnificent blue mountains, Boundless, desolate, and indistinct... In 2016 this piece was transformed into the second movement of Chen Yi’s piano concerto Four Spirits, which I had the greatest pleasure to premiere with the China Philharmonic Orchestra under Long Yu.

    Arietha Lockhart - soprano

    Chen Yi - composer

3/10/10 performance on Faces of Eve recital presented by Women's Works Concert Series in NYC

Bright Moonlight was commissioned in 2000 by the New York Festival of Song, for its Songbook for a New Century project, supported by Meet the Composer and the ASCAP Foundation. The structure of the poem, which I wrote in English, is borrowed from a fixed form of Chinese ancient poems called Picking Mulberry with Added Characters. It is simple, straight but abstract -- from outside to inside, from describing landscape to expressing thinking, from close by to distance, from the past to the future. It's about contemporary human beings and our yearning. I think that it's timeless.
Bright Moonlight was premiered by Theodora Hanslowe, mezzo-soprano, and Michael Barrett, piano, at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, NYC, on March 22, 2001.

    Outside my window bright moonlight,
    Kissing the grassland;
    Near in front, far away,
Given to the earth with consonance,
Look at the window bright moonlight,
    Missing my homeland.
    Near in front, far away,
Yearning for the world of consonance.

Composer Chen Yi has distinguished herself among her peers in the musical world with her works, which combine elements of Western music with those of Chinese tunes. This piece, premiered at Carnegie Hall in 2010 by the Hartt School Wind Ensemble, features two movements that incorporate the same theme but apply it in drastically different ways. This first movement prominently features shimmering woodwinds and pitched percussion instruments to set a very elegant tone.

Chen Yi: Prospect Overture for orchestra (2008) (about 9 minutes)

Commissioned by the China National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the work Prospect Overture for orchestra is premiered by the China National Symphony Orchestra at the 2009 New Year Concerts (12/31/08 and 1/1/09), conducted by Daniel Harding, at the CNCPA. The pitch material in the piece is taken from a Chinese folk tune Baban, and the structure is based on a kind of Chinese traditional instrumental ensemble music used in ritual ceremony, which features blowing instruments suona (shawn, made with wood) and sheng (free-reed mouth-organ, made with gourd). The music is from slow to fast. The string orchestra provides sheng-like sustained chords in the background while the melodic instruments play in heterophonic style imitating the tunes played by a group of suona players. The music reaches an extremely fast section in a climax, followed by a strong and short coda in unison. The duration is about 9 minutes. It reflects the eternal evolution and challenges of nature, and its analogous relationship to the challenges of the human experience. It also symbolizes the growth and maturation processes of individuals, communities and societies. The music presents the images of conflict, struggle, yearning, encouragement and triumph, to express the composer's hope for the peace in the future of the world.

  • We Are America - Chen Yi

    3:29

We Are America is the third movement of SFGC's 2010 commission Angel Island Passages by Chen Yi. Scored for treble voices and string quartet, Chen Yi wrote the following about this commission:

The creative idea for this work was initiated by Dr. McMane, who invited me to write the music, and sent me the book Island, poetry and history of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940, by Him Mark Lai, Genny Lim, and Judy Yung for reference in 2009. Inspired by the Angel Island stories, and by Felicia Lowe, who shared with me her film Carved in Silence and video productions Chinatown and Road to Restoration, I named the first movement of my work 1882, which reflected the dark mood under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. The collective poems carved on the wooden walls in Angel Island expressed deep emotion in sorrow and anxiety. The music in the second movement Longing is sad and sentimental. The third movement is called We Are America, which is ever-moving, energetic and optimistic. The text sung in the beginning in Chinese means I am an American. It's sung in Cantonese dialect, then in Mandarin. As the music develops, from monophonic to polyphonic with increasing layers, the climax is reached when the text is turned to English We are America, which symbolizes the flourishing society with the great contribution from thousands of immigrants during the years. The music fades out towards the ending of the work, which pushes the scene to a remote picture, to look forward to the future peace of the world. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with such inspiring creative artists in this project, and hope the work is meaningful to our new society after the premier performance.

    Chen Yi, Composer
Dr. Chen is a highly regarded and popular Chinese American composer whose work, Chinese Poems, received its world premiere as part of the San Francisco Girls Chorus' twentieth anniversary season in 1998. Dr. Chen was born in Guangzhou, China and in 1986 was the first woman in her country to receive a master's degree in composition. She was also the first woman to present a full evening multimedia orchestral concert in the US (for orchestra, choir, Chinese traditional instrumental soloists, dancers, and image projection--the Chinese Myths Cantata), in 1996. Dr. Chen's major works have been widely performed around the world by orchestras such as the National Symphony, the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the NHK Symphony, the Singapore Symphony, and the China National Symphony. Her new work is supported by a grant from the James Irvine Foundation.
From 1993 to 1996, she was Composer in Residence with The Women's Philharmonic and the vocal ensemble Chanticleer. She joined the composition faculty of the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in 1996, and in 1998 became the
Cravens/Millsap/Missouri Distinguished Professor at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. Her works are published by Theodore Presser Company and can be heard on numerous recordings. By combining Chinese and Western traditions, Dr. Chen transcends cultural and musical boundaries and serves as an ambassador for the arts, creating music that reaches a wide range of audiences and inspires people of different cultural backgrounds.
