  • Chan Wing Wah: Over Ten Thousand Mountains/ live in HK Arts Festival - Chinese Music Virtuosi.

    7:38

    Over Ten Thousand Mountains
    Chan Wing Wah

    Commissioned by Chinese Music Virtuosi for its Argentina tour in 2002, the piece Over Ten Thousand Mountains literally expresses the ensemble flew over ten thousand mountains and started a new friendship with Argentine people.
    The music begins with a zheng ostinato (continuously repeated pattern) representing the slow pace of walking uphill. Eventually, we see the green shades of the mountains near and far. It is then joined by the dizi and sheng. At the top of the mountain one sees multiple peaks competing to become a wonder of nature. Thousand Mountains Competing is the title of a Chinese watercolor painting made by Prof. Jao Chung-I. The composer was very much inspired by the painting. If human beings are to co-exist peacefully, they must try to understand and appreciate each other. With this spirit we can always get by, even with the separation of ten thousand mountains.

    逾萬山
    陳永華

    樂曲由龢鳴樂坊委約,並於2002年阿根廷之旅中首演。
    全曲由古箏的穩定重複句開始,表示「緩步登山」,到山腰之際,但見「山巒疊翠」,笙笛齊和。到山頂之時,但見「千岩競秀」。這標題亦是饒宗頤教授的名畫。作曲者受該畫啟發,遂以此段總結。人類要和洽相處,必要彼此欣賞及尊重,雖有萬山隔阻,定能飛越。

    戀歌
    吐露凝波,春來曉霧重;
    鞍山縹緲,雲擁江峰迷濛。
    已迷濛,憶縱酒,狂歌少年夢;
    夢到長城飛渡,夢出陽關千里,
    黃河九曲水迢迢,寒山寺冷,鐘聲暖客心,
    南國草長,遊子總多情。
    喝一口長江水,拾一片香山如血丹楓,
    披一身江南烟雨。野遊夢重尋,誰相共?
    輕歌攜手與君從!

    “I think it is very difficult in those days because the Hong Kong Composers’ Guild, CASH had not started or had the influence yet. I think what these institutions have done has influenced other bodies to use local composers’ music in their ways. “ - David Gwilt

    “Our livings depend on the university teaching, same as in the United States or in most parts of the western world, that is why we have a group people label them as “University Composers” ……Nowadays, it is difficult to add more positions for our young composers“ - Chan Wing-wah

    “The future should be how to really encourage younger generation of talents to make a difference in the artistic and cultural world in society by integrating technology with musical activities ……they can all be integrated to generate new art forms in which the composer would play an important part. “ - Richard Tsang

    香港有今天的發展實有如馬匹,精神抖擻,向前奔馳。古有八駿,今日的香港亦有其現代版,願香港精神,衝出一切險阻,向目標穩定進發,奪得錦標歸。

    As we look at the development history of Hong Kong, we can liken it to a charging steed, always alert, always looking ahead. History told us about the eight legendary steeds, and Hong Kong is a modern incarnate. May the spirit of Hong Kong be like a charging steed, undaunted by any obstacles or difficult circumstances, with only the target in mind, racing steadily ahead until we win.

    “To appreciate music, you need time and patience, and contemporary concerts are all experimental, so it is understand that when average audience read the poster, they find unknown names and works and do not know what to expect…….I guess we have to think of a way to repackage this kind of contemporary music. “ – Chan Wing-wah

    “I believe people who are working in the creative arts are worthwhile people……whoever you are listening to might produce a masterpiece, so it is worth to have it in the community.” – David Gwilt

  • Rosaline Pi singing Handels Semele: Air O Jove! in pity teach me which to choose

    3:26

    The aria O Jove... with its preceding recitative Ah me! What refuge now is left are from Act 1 of Handel's opera Semele.

    The is a live recording taken from the performance of Semele (a presentation by the Hong Kong Soloists) in the HK City Hall Concert Hall on Jun-23-2002. Singing in the title role of Semele was soprano Rosaline Pi. The orchestra was HK Soloists conducted by Chan Wing Wah.

    =========

    Handel is one of my beloved composers. While singing Bach gives me strong feelings of religiosity, singing Handel brings me back to Earth: with the joy and agony of living and of human love. Handel's tunefulness and rhythmic drive give me full enjoyment in the soul in the making of his music.

    The singing itself, of Handel, requires a light (soprano) voice with extreme versatility in order to manage singing of the ornaments (turns, trills and runs). Focusing is another technique of the singer in order to attain precision and efficiency in attacking the very high pitch especially when this appears as the first note of the phrase.

    “Hong Kong composers have the tendencies to mix a lot of western perspectives with certain Chinese temperament.” - Richard Tsang

    “I think Hong Kong composers’ works are more like fusion food, we all received education locally, then eventually most of us went overseas for further studies……after this kind of overseas experience, they brought back a mixture of everything to Hong Kong.” – Chan Wing-wah

    “If it has to be fusion food, that is to say the best ingredients from any kind of cuisine put together…if you mix the food, cooking ideas really well, you get terrific taste. That is how I think of local composers.” – David Gwilt

    =========
