    15:04

Thank you God for all these precious years you let me live...

I have made my own contribution to the elimination of the plight of a Champion's fan searching for this beautiful, meaningful song, and only drawing a blank, because the words are so hard to swallow..
I dedicate this song to all the Champion's fans, and particularly to those people who set me free, and let me be the man. Freedom from you is what I need. And quoting the Champion's words: Thank you God for moving these evil from me!!

    Enjoy.

THANK YOU GOD FOR FREEDOM: LYRICS

    Thank You God
For all of these precious years you let me live
    Thank you God
    For letting me be free
To know people around the world
Thank you for all the goodness
And everything that you have done
To let me know I'm a man, I'm a man
    Because I'm a man
And may end man all over the world

    Thank you God
For all these precious years you gave to me
    Thank you God
For this happiness oh! you brought to me
    Thank you God, thank you
For moving all this evil from me
    I wanna love
I don't wanna hate nobody around the world

Freedom, oh! freedom, oh! freedom is what we need, yeah!
Freedom oh! lord, oh! freedom, freedom is what we need
All over, all over, all over, all over the world
Yeah! it's freedom, oh! lord freedom
    Is what we need

    It makes no difference
If you're white black or brown
Freedom, freedom is what we need
    All over God's world
    We wanna live together
We wanna be like brothers and sisters
    And good friends all over
All over, all over, all over God's world
    We want to be free

when the lights, when the lights come on again
    All over the world
    When I could shake hands
    With all the good people
    All over the world
And then I'll know, and then I'll know
    I'll know that I'm free ,I'm free
Cause it's freedom, freedom, freedom's what we need
    All over God's world

    FREEDOM!

  • Walking The Blues - Champion Jack Dupree & Teddy Mr. Bear McRae

    2:50

Transferred from original 10 King 78.26 RPM Shellac Single (King 4812)

    Equipment:
    - Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB Direct Drive Professional Turntable
    - Audio-Technica AT120E/t Dual Moving Magnet Cartridge
    - Adobe Audition CC v6.0
    - Audacity v2.0.5

    About this transfer:
The disc was transferred at 33 1/3 RPM (quartz lock engaged) into Adobe Audition at 48kH/16bit. I then passed it through a light pop filter (NOT harmful noise reduction) and removed the subsonic rumble AT Turntables famously leave behind. The result was incredibly clean. I exported to a FLAC and opened the file in Audacity, where the RIAA curve was removed before doubling the bitrate to 96kHz (to achieve an effective speed of 66 2/3 RPM) and speed correction by a factor of 17.39 to achieve the perfect 78.26 RPM. I then applied the correct EQ setting for King 78RPM records (500 Hz bass turnover frequency, -16db 10kHz Gain Rolloff, 50Hz LF Shelving Frequency). I then amplified the recording to maintain maximum dynamic range as well as loudness. Exporting back to FLAC, I imported the file back into Audition and did a lot of manual click/pop removal as well as sparse, small sections of the automatic heavy removal. The result from this long and tedious process is a record that sounds very clean and unplayed, which is incredibly difficult to find in 78RPM records, as only a few plays with the day's gigantic counterweights would give irreperable groove damage.

In order to improve sound quality, the transfers have been collapsed to mono, as the record was recorded.

  • Champion Jack Dupree - Free and Equal

    5:11

The man of most colorful biography, William Thomas Dupree was born in 1909 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His father was from the Belgian Congo and his mother was part African-American, part Cherokee. His parents ran a grocery store in the Irish Channel neighborhood and the family lived upstairs. When he was about one year old, the house was set on fire by the Ku Klux Klan and both his parents were killed. He grew up in the Colored Waifs Home in New Orleans where he received no schooling, but learned about music, cooking and fighting. He made his living playing piano and fighting in the street for bets. He began a life of travelling, living in Chicago, where he met Scrapper Blackwell and Leroy Carr. He also worked as a cook. In Detroit, after Joe Louis encouraged him to become a boxer, he fought 107 bouts, winning Golden Gloves and other championships and picking up the nickname Champion Jack, which he used the rest of his life. He returned to Chicago at the age of 30 and joined a circle of recording artists, including Big Bill Broonzy and Tampa Red, who introduced him to the record producer Lester Melrose. Many of Dupree's songs were later credited to Melrose as composer, and Melrose claimed publishing rights to them. Dupree's career was interrupted by military service in World War II. He was a cook in the United States Navy and was held by the Japanese for two years as a prisoner of war. After the war, his biggest commercial success was Walkin' the Blues, which he recorded as a duet with Teddy McRae. This led to several national tours and eventually a European tour. In 1959 he played an unofficial (and unpaid) duo gig with Alexis Korner at the London School of Economics. Dupree moved to Europe in 1960, settling first in Switzerland and then Denmark, England, Sweden and, finally, Germany. On June 17, 1971, he played at the Montreux Jazz Festival, in the Casino Kursaal, with King Curtis. The recording of the concert was released in 1973 as the album King Curtis & Champion Jack Dupree: Blues at Montreux on the Atlantic label. During the 1970s and 1980s he lived at Ovenden in Halifax, England. A piano he used was later discovered at Calderdale College in Halifax. He continued to record in Europe with the Kenn Lending Band, Louisiana Red and Axel Zwingenberger and made many live appearances. He also worked again as a cook, specializing in New Orleans cuisine. He returned to the United States from time to time and performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Dupree died of cancer on January 21, 1992, in Hanover, Germany.

This number is from the new 3CD Storyville album entitled CHAMPION JACK DUPREE - BLUES PIANIST OF NEW ORLEANS (2019).
This set contains 3 outstanding Storyville CDs, two featuring solo piano and vocal performances, and the third with Dupree accompained by Papa Bue's Viking Jazzband and Fessor's Big City Band. Also included is a rare DVD with Champion Jack accompained by the Kenn Lending Blues Band recorded at Copenhagen's Radhuskroen and Sound Track Studios.

Champion Jack Dupree feat. Allen Toussaint - Live at New Orleans Jazz Festival 1990

Dupree’s appearance on the Music Heritage Stage in 1990 was a combination interview with Allen Toussaint and live performance. While Dupree performed Bring Me Flowers While I’m Living,” Toussaint, who had been waiting at the side of the stage, walked up behind Jack and started a duet by playing on the high keys of Jack’s piano. They then slid into a boogie-woogie, trading off parts before an astonished audience. When WWOZ producers in 2016 rediscovered a VHS copy of this seminal Jazz Fest performance in the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archive, it reached new audiences around the world through a digital transfer and sharing on social media.

If there’s one subject that’s truly a cornerstone of not only country music but also blues and R&B, it’s Bad Boys - the ones who took that short but fatal step from the wrong side of the tracks to the wrong side of the law and wound up either in jail, on the run, or six feet under. On this splendid compilation, you’ll discover a wide selection of them. The boys may be bad, but the songs are anything but!

    2:39

This is Champion Jack's 1940 version. Probably his original. He later re-recorded this tune in 1962 or 63. This tune reminds me of my family. Especially my grandparents. My grandmother taught me to cook a lot of things. Cabbage being one of the big ones. And meat for the greens means pork by the way. But it was wonderful. Her wee kitchen and her singing and her presence. Shes amazing. She even cooked poke 'salad' when we were kids. Those were the days. ...but anyhoos....
Here is a link to learn more about this true champion. Very interesting article.

He was a wonderful soul. Thank you for listening! ♥ Love n peace to you all.
