  • Fabio Biondi plays the Tuscan Stradivari

    25:52

The documentary tells about the encounter of violinist Fabio Biondi with the 1690 Tuscan Stradivari preserved in the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Rome.
Biondi recorded with this instrument Biber's Chaconne in G minor (1676) in the Library of the Monastero di San Giovanni Evangelista, Parma.
The video also tells about the recent research coordinated by Edizioni Scrollavezza & Zanrè, which has involved a team of international researchers and institutions, and preludes to the publication of Treasures of Violin Making volume II.

The greatest violinists before Paganini were Vivaldi, Tartini, Locatelli and Viotti. According to the liner notes, very few of his violin concertos were published during his lifetime and he wrote 135 violin concertos, about 200 sonatas for violin and continuo, and about 40 trio sonatas.

The Dynamic label has made a tremendous effort spending the money to record and print these premiere recordings, but due to lack of support they have gone out of print and are currently selling for nearly sixty dollars. Would anyone care to invest some money and upload the rest of the series before they all get lost?

I would also advise everyone to get the wonderful book Tartini His Life and Times by Lev Ginzburg while you still can as it is out of print and starting to become hard to find.

Of all contemporary violinists that seek authenticity in sound and perform on instruments created during or close to the time frame the music that was written, there are three that stand out as favorites: Rachel Podger, Elizabeth Wallfisch, and Andrew Manze. Podger is my favorite but I love all three without question.

As for recordings of more early violin music, I specifically recommend 'Perla Barocca' by Podger and a cd titled 'Early Italian Violin Sonatas' by Wallfisch who has been involved with the musical unit called Convivium that used to use the name The Locatelli Trio that made many wonderful contributions to the catalog of lesser heard baroque violin music.

In order to raise awareness and gain a better understanding of the sequential order of early violin music, I have made a list of early violin composers and the year they were born, simply by doing searches of the names mentioned below and following the recorded repertoire of Podger, Manze and Wallfisch you will find there is much to discover.

Troppo belle e troppo avare, troppo ingrate ogn'hor mi siete.

Trionfate astri rubelli son trofeo mi do per vinto.
Anco in Lete io voglio estinto adorar lumi si belli.

    Traducción:
¿Cuándo quedaréis saciadas de huir de mí, amadas luces?
Tan bellas y tan avaras, tan ingratas me sois.

Artists: Nicola Mazzanti (keef piccolo), Alessandro Visintini (nagahara mini), Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento Marco Angius (conductor)

On this unique and diverse recording, three contemporary concertante works for piccolo and orchestra are coupled with an arrangement of Mozart’s Oboe Quartet with the solo wind part exchanged for its treble cousin.
Liebermann (b.1961) has acknowledged the music of Dmitri Shostakovich as a consistent inspiration through his career, and especially its latter stages after he withdrew from writing in a toughly modernist idiom. That influence may be appreciated throughout the piercing, lyrical stretches of the Piccolo Concerto composed in 1996, and in its economical orchestration for a Classical-sized orchestra plus an important part for harp. If Vivaldi constitutes your sole engagement so far with the piccolo as a solo instrument, Liebermann’s concerto is a perfect place to start and broaden your appreciation for the instrument as more than the piping, variously eerie or shrill capstone to works by Beethoven, Mahler and indeed Shostakovich.

  • Antonio Giannettini - Nisi Dominus

    8:16

A setting of psalm 126 by Antonio Giannettini, composer and organist from the turn of the 17-18th century from the Venetian area. He was taught by Grossi and Legrenzi, and was pretty much appreciated in his time for his operas and oratories and all his sacred music, like this Nisi Dominus, part of a collection dedicated to the empress Wilhelmine Amalia of Brunswick-Lüneburg
