    Lyrics:
You know this boogie is for real.

I used to buy my faith in worship,
But then my chance to Heaven slipped.
I used to worry about the future
But then I throw my caution to the wind.
I had no reason to be care free
No no no, until I took a trip to the other side of town
Yeah yeah yeah, you know I heard that boogie rhythm
Hey- I had no choice but to get down down down down.

Dance, nothing left for me to do but dance,
Off these bad times I'm going through just dance
Got canned heat in my heals tonight baby

Der (Playback-) Auftritt von On The Road Again stammt aus dem Beat Club vom 14.09.1968.

In 1965, the blues- and boogie-rock band Canned Heat was formed in Los Angeles by guitar and harmonica player Alan Blind Owl Wilson and lead singer Bob The Bear Hite. They took the name for the band from an old delta blues song called Canned Heat Blues written by Tommy Johnson in 1928. The worldwide hit On The Road Again is best known for Wilsons unique high-pitched vocals and famous for its harmonica solo. Beside playing at all major festivals of the 60s Woodstock, Monterey Pop, Isle of Wight the band also travelled to Europe for concerts and TV appearances, e.g. the German Beat Club, where they performed the song in a lip-synched version. Tragically, on September 3, 1970 Alan Wilson died of a barbiturate overdose which led to numerous line-up changes in the following years. But the band still plays on today in the fifth decade of their existence.

    Lyrics :
-I'm going up the country, babe don't you wanna go
-I'm going up the country, babe don't you wanna go
-I'm going to some place where I've never been before
-I'm going, I'm going where the water tastes like wine
-Well I'm going where the water tastes like wine
-We can jump in the water, stay drunk all the time
-I'm gonna leave this city, got to get away
-I'm gonna leave this city, got to get away
-All this fussing and fighting, man, you know I sure can't stay
-Now baby, pack your leaving trunk, you know we've got to leave today
-Just exactly where we're going I cannot say, but
-We might even leave the USA
-'Cause there's a brand new game that I want to play
-No use of you running, or screaming and crying
-'Cause you've got a home as long as I've got mine

btw I've never made this video

  • Canned Heat Going Up The Country 1970

    2:45

I love this song, BUT it's merely a re-working of the 1928 Henry Thomas classic Bull Doze Blues ( ) ....some people say stole...pretty much note for note with different lyrics. Given that the original was only 40 years old in 1968, it could have been protected by the 1909 US Copyright act had it been extended by the copyright owners in 1956 when the 28 year protection ceased. If the copyright owners had in fact extended their copyrights...then the owners of Vocalion (US Decca?) could have pursued a claim which would have been extremely fruitful, especially even now when money from ads is worth SO much. (Copyright is a complicated issue...here's some text....The copyright term of the Copyright Act of 1909 is 28 years. This date runs through the end of the calendar year. Therefore, the last date any work is copyrighted is December 31st. If that work's copyright were renewed during the 28th year, it would receive an additional 28 years protection. This is commonly known as the renewal term. If the work was renewed, the total length of copyright was 56 years. Sometimes, however, the work was not renewed. If this was the case, the work fell into the public domain after the 28-year period.) Bullfrog Blues is also a very old blues number... . ....They even got their name from an old blues song....Tommy Johnson's Canned Heat Blues

  • Canned Heat - On The Road Again

    3:18

Canned Heat is an American rock band that was formed in Los Angeles in 1965. The group has been noted for its interpretations of blues material and for its efforts to promote interest in this type of music and its original artists. It was launched by two blues enthusiasts, Alan Wilson and Bob Hite, who took the name from Tommy Johnson's 1928 Canned Heat Blues, a song about an alcoholic who had desperately turned to drinking Sterno, generically called canned heat (from the original 1914 product name Sterno Canned Heat), After appearances at the Monterey and Woodstock festivals at the end of the 1960s, the band acquired worldwide fame with a lineup consisting of Hite (vocals), Wilson (guitar, harmonica and vocals), Henry Vestine and later Harvey Mandel (lead guitar), Larry Taylor (bass), and Adolfo de la Parra (drums).

You know this boogie is for real
I used to put my faith in worship
But then my chance to get to heaven slipped
I used to worry about the future
But then I threw my caution to the wind
I had no reason to be care free, no, no, no
Until I took a trip to the other side of town, yeah, yeah, yeah
You know I heard that boogie rhythm, hey
I had no choice but to get down, down, down, down
Dance, nothing left for me to do but dance
Off these bad times I'm going through just dance
Got canned heat in my heels tonight, baby
I feel the thunder, see the lightning
I know this anger's heaven sent
So I've got to hang out all my hang-ups
Because of the boogie I feel so hell bent, hey, hey
It's just an instant gut reaction, that I got
I know I never ever felt like this before
I don't know what to do but then that's nothing new
Stuck between hell and high water I need a cure to make it through
Hey dancing nothing left for me to do but dance
Off these bad times I'm going through just dance
Hey, got canned heat in my heels tonight, baby
You know, know, know I'm gonna dance, yeah
Off the nasty things that people say
Dance yeah, but I'm gonna make it anyway
Dance yeah, got canned heat up my heels tonight baby
You know I've got canned heat up my heels
You know this boogie is for real
Only the wind can blow the answer
And she cries to me when I'm asleep
She says you know that you can go much faster
I know that peoples' talk can be so cheap, hey
I got this voodoo child in veined on me
I'm gonna use my power to ascend
You know I got these running heels to use
Sometimes there's no way I lose, I was born to run and built to last
You've never seen my feet 'cause they move so fast
Dance yeah, hey nothing left for me to do but dance
Off these bad times I'm going through just dance, hey
Got canned heat in my heels tonight, baby
Hey, I've got to dance, yeah
Off the nasty things that people say
Dance yeah, but I'm gonna make it anyway
Dance yeah, got canned heat up my heels tonight, baby
You know this boogie is for real
Got so much canned heat in my heels, yeah
Gonna dance, gonna dance my blues away tonight
You know I'm gonna dance my blues away
You know this boogie is for real
Got so much canned heat in my heels, yeah
Gonna dance, gonna dance my blues away tonight
Dance, come on got canned heat in my heels tonight
Dance, canned heat in my heels tonight
Dance, canned heat in my heels tonight, baby

Commemorating Woodstock 50th anniversary, Alan Blind Owl Wilson sings lead and plays harmonica on his well-known composition On The Road Again (Enhanced). Soon after Canned Heat's participation in the historic 1969 Woodstock Festival, the blues-rock group performed live on Playboy After Dark. The Los Angeles, CA TV series was recorded 50 years ago on November 20, 1969 and broadcast in January 1970.

Canned Heat formed in Los Angeles in 1965. The other founding members are Bob “The Bear” Hite, Larry “The Mole” Taylor, Fito de La Parra and Henry Vestine.

Wikipedia: On September 3, 1970, Alan Wilson was found dead on a hillside behind bandmate Bob Hite's Topanga Canyon home; he was 27 years old. An autopsy identified his manner and cause of death as accidental acute barbiturate intoxication. Wilson reportedly had attempted suicide a few months earlier, attempting to drive his car off a freeway in Los Angeles. He was briefly hospitalized for significant depression, and was released after a few weeks. Although his death is sometimes reported as a suicide, this is not clearly established and he left no note. Wilson's death came just two weeks before the death of Jimi Hendrix and four weeks before the death of Janis Joplin, two artists who also died at the same age. Along with his talent and intellect, Wilson had a reputation for social awkwardness and introversion which may have been a symptom of his depression.

Canned Heat will participate in Woodstock 50. Organizers revealed the Watkins Glen, New York festival’s full lineup. Dead and Company, John Fogerty, Santana, John Sebastian, Country Joe Mcdonald, Canned Heat and Hot Tuna – all acts that took part in the 1969 festival – are all on the lineup for the festival, which takes place August 16 through 18, 2019, the 50th anniversary of the original Woodstock.

Canned Heat - World of make believe
    From Boogie 2000

I've seen behind the curtain where the phony wizard hides
Now I'm going through the looking glass in search of paradise
I know there's more than meets the eye, 'cause I've seen it in my dreams
I'm livin' in a world of make believe

I've been searchin' and searchin' and I've come to the conclusion
That this everyday world is just an optical illusion
I've found the focus is adjustable, it's clear enough to me
I'm livin' in a world of make believe

---- Hammond and Guitar Solo ----
I can take it where I want it, I can take it there now
It's an anyway world for anybody, anyhow
I know you can change your point of view, you can take it from me
I'm livin' in a world of make believe

I've seen behind the curtain where the phony wizard hides
And I've been through the looking glass in search of paradise
I know there's more than meets the eye, you can take it from me

  • Canned Heat Bassist Larry Taylor Dies at 77: Where Are The Other Members Now?

    3:27

Canned Heat Bassist Larry Taylor Dies at 77
August, 21, 2019 – He was in the classic version of Canned Heat joining in 1967 two years after the band formed. A group spokesperson confirmed that Taylor died on Monday August 19th at his home in California after a 12-year battle with cancer.

Taylor was right there on their debut album from the summer of love – released in July 1967. The self titled record was filled with Blues covers. He would be on their next four albums. Their sophomore album album “Boogie With Canned Heat” that peaked the highest at #16 on Billboard and #5 in the UK. The album contained their first hit “On the Road Again” which peaked at #16 in the US and #8 in the UK. Album #3 “Living the Blues” had their biggest US hit, “Going Up The Country” which reached #11(Lyric - I'm goin' up the country, baby don't you want to go?). Those two songs were sung by Alan Wilson the other singer for the band. Their original lead singer was Bob Hite. He would go on to sing their biggest UK hit – the #2 tune, “Lets Work Together.”

Taylor was in the fold when the band was on fire playing the Monterey Pop Festival alongside The Who, Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, Otis Redding and Jefferson Airplane in June 1967.

All the guys in that classic version of Canned Heat had nicknames. Singer guitarist Alan Wilson was “Blind Owl” - he died in 1970 from an accidental overdose. Singer Bob Hite was “The Bear” he died in 1981 with the same cause of death. Henry Vestine was “The Sunflower.” He passed from heart and respiratory failure in a Paris hotel on the morning of October 20, 1997. Harvey Mandel was nicknamed “The Snake,” - He's 74. He left in 2014. The only member left from their heyday Drummer Adolfo De La Parra was “Fito” and Larry Taylor was “The Mole.”

He was born on June 26, 1942 in New York. He was on stage with them 50 years ago at Woodstock in 1969. He was in and out of the band several times since first leaving in 1970.

Taylor toured with Jerry Lee Lewis when he was only 18. He played on several Monkees albums including playing on such hits as Last Train to Clarksville and (Theme From) The Monkees. as well as John Mayall and Tom Waits.

Canned heat were slated to play the ill-fated Woodstock 50 show this past weekend. By John Beaudin
