  • CTI Records 70s Jazz Mix

    58:02

One hour of 70's Jazz Funk & Soul Jazz grooves picked by Dckne from CTI Jazz Records catalogue. CTI for Creed Taylor Incorporated, a label that became independent in 1970 and flourished during the seventies. The label also became part of hip-hop history by having a major part of its catalog sampled by numerous producers to create a great number of hip-hop classics. Slick Rick's Children's Story, Eric.B & Rakim's Follow the Leader, or Run DMC's Peter Piper are some good examples.

    → About CTI records

Creed Taylor Incorporated is a jazz label founded in 1967 by producer/A&R manager Creed Taylor, initially as a subsidiary of A&M Records. Taylor had previously founded Impulse Records and worked for Verve Records where he earned the reputation as an industry-respected producer of jazz albums.

CTI became an independent label in 1970 and used several distributors for its releases, among them Motown and CBS. Kudu Records was started as a sister label in 1971, and later, CTI subsidiaries named Salvation Records, Green street, and Three Brothers were launched. The label was initially very successful with best-selling album releases by Deodato or Grover Washington Jr.

In 1978, CTI Records had to file for Chapter XI bankruptcy, but much of its catalog has remained in print (Creed Taylor launched the 8000 reissue series in 1979), and the label continued active until 1984.

CTI ALL-STARS: CTI SUMMER JAZZ AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL 1972 - LIVE ONE *Grits Bowl *Inner City Blues / What's Going On *
    California Dreaming * First Light

Audio mastered by Melvin Manders / The Smoothjazz Loft

Creed Taylor is an American record producer, best known for his work with CTI Records, which he founded in 1968. His career also included work at Bethlehem Records, ABC-Paramount, Verve, and A&M Records. He is widely acknowledged for bringing major bossa nova talent from Brazil to record in the U.S. in the 1960s.
    The CTI Years:
Taylor soon established CTI among the most popular and successful jazz record companies of the 1970s, achieving fame for his unrivalled ability to balance the artistic with the commercial. Musicians including Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, George Benson, Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan, Nina Simone, Paul Desmond, Art Farmer, Herbie Hancock, and Ron Carter are just a few of the many successful jazz artists who recorded on CTI during the 1970s. Taylor also formed other labels within CTI, including the Kudu label, which focused on soul-jazz recordings by Hank Crawford, Grover Washington, Jr., Esther Phillips and others.
Bert Gambini, a radio programmer in Buffalo, summarizes, “In evaluating CTI, I'm going to borrow the wisdom of Witold Rybczynski, the architectural historian. He felt there was no such thing as a timeless building. Certain structures were admired because they are specifically of their time. I think this too is the case with CTI jazz. This music screams of its era. It's that temporal stamp that I interpret as an asset, not as a liability.

  • Gabor Szabo - Thirteen

    9:17

    Album: Mizrab (1972)
Guitarist Gabor Szabo began his apprenticeship with Creed Taylors profitable but often critically-slighted CTI Records with this above-average collection of fusion and pop/jazz. The long Szabo compositions on side one, Mizrab and Thirteen, are excellent showcases for the alluring, hypnotic and surprising chemistry between the guitarist and the electric keyboards of Bob James. Shostakovich, Carole King and Seals & Crofts get workouts here too. Szabo is in top-form on MIZRAB, well-supported by the excellent contributions of bassist Ron Carter and drummers Jack DeJohnette and Billy Cobham.

Beyond the Blue Horizon is a 1971 studio album by American guitarist George Benson. It was his first album released on CTI Records.
Having taken Benson along with him when he founded CTI, Creed Taylor merely leaves the guitarist alone with a small group on his first release. The payoff is a superb jazz session where Benson meets Jack DeJohnette, Ron Carter, and Clarence Palmer.
The lyrical Benson is also on eloquent display in Ode to a Kudu
The Alternative Take of Ode to a Kudu is only listed in the later releases of Beyond The Blue Horizon.
    Sources:

Το LP Beyond the Blue Horizon, ήταν το πρώτο που ηχογράφησε ο George Benson στην CTI Records το 1971.
Ο λυρισμός του Benson απεικονίζεται απόλυτα στο Ode to a Kudu
Το Alternative Take του Ode to a Kudu δεν υπάρχει στην tracklist του αρχικού LP, αλλά στις μετέπειτα επανεκδόσεις του Beyond the Blue Horizon
