This is a follow-up video to my previous tutorial. This one is to try and answer the question about the performance of the plugin.

The Waves CLA MixHub plugin captures the smooth console workflow and the rich analog sound of legendary mixer Chris Lord-Alge. Mix up to 64 tracks – all from the same plugin window – using channel strips modeled from CLA’s personal console. Mix musically, within the context of a song, as swiftly and effortlessly as your ideas come.

Plugins normally work on only one channel at a time. CLA MixHub is the first plugin to work in buckets – groupings of up to 8 channels, in up to 8 buckets in total. In other words, you can mix up to 64 channels from one CLA MixHub plugin window. By mixing tracks side by side in the MixHub’s buckets, you’ll gain a mixing perspective that lets you immediately hear how one track’s processing affects others within a song.

  • Waves CLA MixHub explained

    6:36

Save an additional 10% off CLA MixHub or any other purchase at Waves Audio using this link:

#CLA MixHub is a Channel Strip very similar to the Waves #SSL E Channel but distributed in a similar way to Scheps Omni Channel. It has been modeled from the #console of Chris Lord Alge with the addition of some very useful processors and an unprecedented improvement for the in-the-box workflow that we will explain in the second half of this video.

    Direct link:

To begin with, Waves has decided to put separate buttons for saturation and noise ending once and for all with the speculations on the analog button used previously. ANALOG controls the analog saturation and NOISE controls only the noise. Of course, to hear the saturation created when ANALOG is activated, it is necessary to drive the input signal.

LINE controls the level of the input signal, adjusting this to levels close to 0db according to the internal meter of the plugin brings out the character of Chris's console. MIC has been created to generate even more distortion, similar to when the preamps are oversaturated.

One of the most visible changes compared to the SSL E-Channel plugin is that the filters are now located in the INPUT module but the operation is the same. To learn about the proper functioning of an SSL E-Channel please see our video How to use Waves SSL E-Channel

The next module is the EQ and it works exactly the same as the SSL E-Channel. The only differences are the addition of a solo button that allows isolating the frequency bands to more easily search for resonant areas and, like Scheps Omni Channel, all the modules can be expanded to be used in STEREO, DUAL MONO or MID-SIDE.

The compressor module maintains the same scheme of the SSL E Channel but has added the possibility of selecting between the classic SSL channel compressor and a CLA-76 (the area will turn blue). A DUCKER was added to the GATE/EXPANDER circuit which we will see in a next video and COMP MIX which is nothing more than a WET/DRY knob to process the compression module in parallel. An EXTERNAL SIDECHAIN option has also been added. The other option is the traditional possibility of moving the EQ out of the signal circuit and using it to shape the sidechain signal received by the compressor.

The rest of the channel is easy to understand: REVERSE exchanges the L-R channels. EXTRA WIDE is a stereo expander and FILTER has been added to help keep the frequencies below 200 Hz mono compatible when EXTRA WIDE is in use. (sorry, the screen capture software failed in this part).

Now, the real advantage of this plugin is that it is possible to insert one in each track and have them communicate with each other and appear in blocks of up to 8 at the same time in the same screen to simulate the workflow of an analog console. For this example we will select the 8 most relevant channels of the drums and we will insert CLA Mix Hub in them. Then we will open any of the instances, change to BUCKET VIEW and rename the first bucket to Drums. Then we return to CHANNEL VIEW and open each one of the plugins and where it says ASSIGN TO BUCKET we select Drums. Now when we return to BUCKET VIEW we will see the INPUT modules of all 8 instances side by side.

Now you will have realized that we can only see the first module of each instance. In the upper right part it says INPUT, EQ, DYN and OUTPUT. Click on one of them and automatically all the modules will change to the selected type.

The channel strips are meticulously modeled from the ground up with the latest technology, directly from Grammy-winning mix legend Chris Lord-Alge’s personal console – the console that Chris has used to mix a huge number of hits, from Green Day, Muse and Sugarland to Keith Urban and many more.

Once CLA MixHub is inserted on the channels in your mix, you can assign your tracks to buckets and begin making adjustments on the fly: mixing dynamics, EQ, saturation and more at a free-flowing pace without needing to switch plugin windows in your DAW.

While mixing, you can flip between two plugin view modes: Bucket View, with control of up to 8 channels at a time, or Channel View, focusing on a single channel’s processing chain.

Each channel consists of 5 sections: input, dynamics, EQ, output, and an insert point. Each processing module can be expanded to reveal additional functionality.

The input section handles high- and low-pass filtering and switchable harmonic distortion. The “line” control models the line amp in Chris’s console, adding light saturation. For a more extreme drive, kick in the mic pre. This, in effect, is like running a line-level signal through the console’s microphone preamp.

The dynamics section includes two flavors of compression: the console’s built-in compressor, as well as Chris’s favored “Bluey” compressor. Also included: a gate, expander, and ducker with a “hold” control and flexible sidechain options for shaping a sound’s envelope – as Chris calls it, it’s a ‘super-gate.’

The EQ section includes 4 bands of parametric EQ, from wide bells to narrow boost and cuts, loaded with the console’s original ballistics and Q characteristics.

The output section includes a VU meter and plasma-style PPM meter, plus a stereo imaging control and an output fader.

With this video we want to show you how fast and intuitive it has been for us to #mix with #CLA Mix Hub. For this we have inserted the #plugin in all the relevant stems of this session (Drums, Tambourines, Bass, Guitars and Keyboards) and we have them all assigned to the same bucket... To learn how to do this, read the manual or see our previous video Waves CLA MixHub Explained:

    1. Adding brightness in the Keys and controlling it with the LPF.
    2. Boosting the presence of the tambourine and compensating for the added volume.
    3. Adding a little smile EQ to the drums. BELL changes from shelf to a bell type of filter.
    4. Compression in parallel in the drums group, similar to what we did recently with MV2.
    5. Looking for and boosting an area in the bass that contains both low and mid frequencies which is where the energy of this instrument lies.
    6. Controlling a little the low mids and adding definition by boosting the high mids.
    7. A bit of fast parallel compression and volume compensation.
    8. Finally a bit of 100Hz on the guitar solo to increase the presence, make the necessary cuts with the filters and volume compensation.

Now we bypass all instances at once to make sure we have maintained a similar output volume and listen to what we have done.

    CLA MixHub:

In some cases you will find that the number of tracks of certain instruments exceeds the number of tracks that fit in a bucket... For example, our #drums has ten tracks so when we start adding all instances of #CLA #MixHub to the bucket that we designate for drums we will find this note: Please assign to a different bucket or remove channels from current bucket.

In case you have not guessed yet the solution is as easy as opening another instance of MixHub, put it next to the first, select the second bucket and assign the remaining tracks. Now you can use the remaining space for the bass tracks, etc. This is seen briefly on a laptop in the introduction video of the product, there is even one where you can see four instances open at the same time on a larger screen.

  • Alternative to parallel Tubescreamer BASS saturation with CLA MixHub as an insert

Deep basses are difficult to translate into small systems. The parallel #TubeScreamer chain (Watch Cytomic The Scream on Electric Bass: usually does the trick but sometimes it isn't necessary going that far...

#CLA MixHub has such a beautiful color that we believe it can go down in history as one of the most spectacular bass saturators ever made for the box. Check this out...

Saturating the track from an insert reduces the dynamics so you have to weigh the pros and cons before deciding, if you don't want to affect this then go with the #parallel trick.

The only thing we did was to increase the MIC gain until we obtained the desired color, then reduced OUTPUT to unity gain.

  • How we would use CLA MixHub Lite

    1:12

Save an additional 10% off any purchase at Waves Audio using this link:

Note: we have only tested this in Pro Tools, that's why we recommend if you use a different DAW to test it before making any changes to your projects so you don't lose your job.

    CLA MixHub:

The new update of #Waves #plugins includes a Lite version of #CLA MixHub. According to the manual this version can have up to 30% less CPU load because it uses a shorter FIR in the EQ module, the rest of the modules remain exactly the same.

In the future we could make a proper audio comparison but at first glance the difference in quality is practically inaudible. For now we just wanted to mention that you could use the Lite version to make the mix in real time and then simply replace each instance with the full version before exporting or freezing the tracks. All your settings will be maintained automatically with the change from Lite to Full.

There you go, all settings remained the same... at least in Pro Tools.

Here's a video of me trying to explain what needs to be done before you use the CLA Mix Hub. You probably should do this pre-production clean up in every project that you do any way.

This plugin reminds me of MIXBUS by Harrison Consoles.

It actually sounds really good I just couldn't really get in to the behind editing and work flow. I think it's some thing you should really checkout if you're looking for a budget DAW and want to mix something really fast that sounds good.

I'm currently working on a video that explains how I use Dante in my studio. If you haven't heard about it you should check it out.
