  • 5 Pentatonic Boxes for Major & Minor Soloing - CAGED System!

    14:42

Download a complete PDF study guide at:

    Hello friends,
And welcome to another lead guitar tutorial. In today's session we will use our CAGED system to discover how each of our five pentatonic scale boxes can be used in both major and minor soloing. The basic concept is that a given major or minor chord can be played in five positions on the fretboard - C,A,G,E,D - surrounding each of these chord positions is both a major and minor pentatonic box. Each box can be played in two locations the fretboard, one major and the other minor. Let's get started!

  • Beyond the CAGED system: Integrating chords, arpeggios and scales Part 1

    17:59

A short(ish) improvised lesson on some advanced concepts utilizing the CAGED system.
Here I look at the basic CAGED major scale shapes and how chords and arpeggios link in with them.

    11:09

Please consider a donation to keep the videos coming:

In this video we will look at diatonic (within a key) chord arpeggios in every CAGED chord shape. Chords are built in 3rds which means we are skipping notes in the scale and each chord (triad) contains 3 notes. Work one position at a time and make sure you are absorbing the information. There's a lot to get out of this exercise but focus on the note recognition first, then use different approaches (i.e. speed drills, technique, improv). Play slowly and say your notes and chords out loud.

As discussed previously, the major pentatonic scale is your basic scale for playing over major chords, or I, IV, and V chords.

It’s the brightest, most consonant sound you will have at your disposal.

It’s important to try all five patterns of the scale and try it in many different keys.

Practice it with a metronome at first, and once you have the shapes down, begin to work out each of the shapes and find some licks that sound good.

Practice with the jam tracks and get a feel for the major pentatonic scale and have fun!

In today's video, we are going to look at three note per string scales in a totally new way. This approach will unlock melodic phrasing possibilities that are not found in the traditional fingering.

I call this system the three note per string CAGED system and in this case, we are going to use the Ionian mode.

Remember to always be targeting the intervals you want in order to have control of what you are playing.

This system will break the typical three note per scale sequences in favor of a more intervallic approach.

    Guitar Soloing -

Time to mix major pentatonic and major arpeggios. The ultimate goal of this is to be able to craft your lead lines by visualizing chord tones and adding in other notes in the pentatonic scales to connect these chord tones. Here’s the formula:

    Pick a key.

    Play lowest playable octave shape.

    Play the chord.

    Play the arpeggio.

    Play the pentatonic scale.

Increase all the way up the neck to achieve all 5 patterns.

  • Modern Approach to CAGED System - Insane Fretboard Knowledge

    7:03

We take a look at the benefits of using the CAGED system as skeletons for building other harmonic content around it, creating very hip voicings that merge into one with pentatonic scales.

CAGED basically divides the fretboard into 5 pieces, and is an incredible tool for fretboard visualisation. The system goes hand-in-hand with the intervals lesson, and it creates anchors for knowing where each interval is using familiar shapes.

  • Unifying 3 Note Per String and CAGED Scales

    16:55

I've never been convinced that you need to pick one scale philosophy over another, in fact it's very easy to create a unified approach that incorporates both!

This week I break the concept down and show how easy it is to play seamless runs that flip between CAGED and 3 Note Per String patterns.

When we add the minor CAGED chords, all we need to do is position a chord shape over each of the five pentatonic scales, just as we did with the major CAGED chords. The good news is that we can take the information we already have and simply build upon it. So, if we took the key of G major / E minor (which contain the same notes), we would be able to position the five pentatonic shapes with the five major and minor CAGED chords, all on top of each other. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? To break it down, the website shows the five minor CAGED chords with pentatonic.

This is a subject I always get questioned on from my students who have started to learn and use the CAGED system.

How do i know which is the best scale position to use?

Really there is not a wrong answer if you are using the correct pentatonic scale but when it comes to best practice and most efficient then this lesson covers that question.

Now it is time for the natural minor scale. You are familiar with the minor pentatonic scale, so again, you want to view this scale as an extension of the pentatonic. We are adding the half steps at our 2nd and b6 scale degrees. The minor scale formula is:

    Whole - Half - Whole - Whole - Half - Whole - Whole

    Or these intervals:

    1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7

Below are the five patterns of the natural minor scale. Memorize them and play them the same way you did the pentatonics. Connect all five patterns up and down the neck in a variety of different keys. Try to visualize the underlying chords in the patterns. Start by playing the minor chord of each pattern, then the corresponding arpeggio, the pentatonic scale, and then the full minor scale. Good luck!
