  • Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band | Live At Chicago Music Exchange | CME Sessions

    20:52

Chicago Music Exchange hosted Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band for a CME session on March 14th 2013. Enjoy watching one of the 3 songs they performed live during their master class.

Blade was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. The first music he experienced was gospel and songs of praise at the Zion Baptist Church where his father, Brady L. Blade, Sr., has been the pastor for fifty-two years. In elementary school, music appreciation classes were an important part of his development and at age nine, he began playing the violin. Inspired by his older brother, Brady Blade, Jr., who had been the drummer at Zion Baptist Church, Brian shifted his focus to the drums throughout middle and high school.

During high school, while studying with Dorsey Summerfield, Jr., Blade began listening to the music of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Elvin Jones, and Joni Mitchell. By the age of eighteen, Brian moved to New Orleans to attend Loyola University. From 1988 through 1993, he studied and played with most of the master musicians living in New Orleans, including Johnny Vidacovich, Ellis Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, Bill Huntington, Mike Pellera, John Mahoney, George French, Germaine Bazzle, David Lee, Jr., Alvin Red Tyler, Tony Dagradi and Harold Battiste.

Whether in the bands of Wayne Shorter, Joshua Redman, Chick Corea, Joni Mitchell or Norah Jones: Brian Blade's drumming is always recognizable. Elegant, bouncy, breathing - such adjectives come to mind when Blade colors and shapes music. Unusually for a drummer he prefers the soft, fine tones and thinks in large compositional arcs. This is also evident in the pieces he and his long-time friend Jon Cowherd composed over the years for his “Fellowship Band” since 1997. Lyrical jazz with a long breath and a sense for beautiful melodies.

  • Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band Perform Duality

    11:08

Brian Blade and The Fellowship Band perform pianist Jon Cowherd’s composition “Duality” from their 2017 Blue Note release Body and Shadow, broadcast as part of SFJAZZ's Virtual San Francisco Jazz Festival on June 11, 2021.

    ABOUT THIS CONCERT

GRAMMY-winning drummer, composer, and founding SFJAZZ Collective member Brian Blade and his Fellowship Band made their debut on the Miner stage with this performance, filmed in June 2016 during the 34th San Francisco Jazz Festival, performing material from his discography including his blockbuster 2014 Blue Note album Landmarks and the then-forthcoming 2017 follow-up Body and Shadow.
Easily one of the most versatile and soulful musicians in jazz, Blade formed the Fellowship in 1997 with pianist and fellow Loyola student Jon Cowherd, enlisting saxophonists Myron Walden and Melvin Butler along with bassist Chris Thomas (and previously guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel), releasing five increasingly accomplished sessions for Blue Note that blend reverent spirituality and down home folksiness with a searching, exploratory spirit. Widely known for his two-decade tenure in Wayne Shorter’s telepathic quartet and his work with Chick Corea, Joshua Redman, Kenny Garrett, Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones and many others, Blade has always returned to the Fellowship as his primary creative outlet

  • Brian Blade And The Fellowship Band: NPR Music Field Recordings

    3:33

We had hoped to get the great drummer Brian Blade to give us a little private exhibition after his set at the Newport Jazz Festival this year. The weather, however, was proving much less generous than he and his band were. Early that morning, a steady all-day rain settled in over coastal Rhode Island, making it difficult to transport dry instruments anywhere. On top of that, a last-minute change to travel plans meant that Blade needed to get out of town quickly — to an airport over four hours away.

But he and the Fellowship Band — the group of guys Blade has been making music with for the better part of two decades or more — were game to figure out something for us. So we herded them into the shelter of a quiet tunnel in Fort Adams State Park. Myron Walden and Melvin Butler put their horns together, and pianist Jon Cowherd realized he could use the synthesizer app on his iPad. The three of them played for us one of Cowherd's many serene melodies — this one called Landmarks, the title track of their new album.

One of the great things about Blade's work with the Fellowship Band is that it's not all about the drummer and his proven technical wizardry. It's also about beautiful harmonies, slow-developing pieces, earnest entreaty to make you feel something other than distanced admiration. And though Blade himself doesn't play, this brief moment of zen under heavy skies — this pretty li'l chorale for horns and iPad app — it also gets at why this band is special.–PATRICK JARENWATTANANON

My new youtube channel is here:
Absolutely amazing jazz. All original music, written by the drummer and keyboardist. Although I do like straight ahead jazz, I much prefer a little detour into ambient/classical/blues/funk/noise at the same time. Brian Blade And The Fellowship Band, formerly known as Brian Blade Fellowship, definitely fits that bill. The only band that I can compare them to is Oregon, which also is a very different kind of jazz band, or the old Windham Hill label in the Bay Area had a similar sound, I miss that label. I taped two nights in a row at Yoshi's, if you liked this show, definitely check out Azam Ali and Niyaz, amazing Persian music who I taped the night after this, link to the show is here:
    Azam Ali and Niyaz -

I've been going to Yoshi's for many years now, I used to attend the first location on Claremont Ave. when I was younger. I think I've probably been to Yoshi's over 200-300 times in my life, jazz is very important to me and my spiritual growth. I'd like to personally thank Yoshie for making me a smarter, more well rounded person by exposing me to the legacy that is jazz. Without her, my life, and the Bay Area, would be a much less interesting place. Without her, the Bay Area would not have a first class venue (make that venues since Yoshi's opened a second location in San Francisco) for jazz. Thanks Yoshie!

Yoshi's youtube channel can be found here:

    Brian Blade Fellowship lineup:
    Jon Cowherd - Piano
Myron Walden - Alto Sax, Bass Clarinet
Melvin Butler - Tenor Sax, Soprano Sax
    Chris Thomas - Bass
    Brian Blade - Drums
Brian can be found on almost all of Joshua Redman's albums, and most of Wayne Shorter's new albums.
If anyone knows the setlist, please post it in the comments, thanks!

En año 98, tuve la oportunidad de presenciar uno de los show del Montreal International Jazz Festival mas finos y sublime nunca antes visto. I focused my camera on the drummer this time because we couldn't see him in the part one. But it seems he doesn't like the light.
