    22:15

    Boss Katana 50 vs Vox Cambridge 50 Shootout

    Today we take a look at two modelling amps that compete in very much the same price range. The Katana is a bit cheaper, but not much. The amps are both 50 watts and pretty much the same size. The features are a bit different, but we'll get into all that in the video. Can the Vox Cambridge challenge the Boss Katana, which has been pretty much the king of affordable modelling amps these last few years? Find out in the video. I hope you enjoy!

    The gear I most often use.
    A Stratocaster of some kind, either an Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, or a custom Strat with a scalloped fretboard. For 7 string stuff I mostly use an Ibanez Universe.
    A Marshall 1987x into a Marshall cab.
    A Fender Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive, plus a Boss NS-2 noise gate, or a Strymon Sunset.
    A Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah, and a delay.
    An AKG C-414 mic for the guitar.
    For acoustic stuff I use a Taylor 710 short scale thingy.

  • How Far Have Modeling Amps Come? | Line 6 Spider vs Boss Katana

    22:47

    If you're like us, you were jealous of everyone who had a Line 6 Spider. If you're like the people that had a Line 6 Spider, we were jealous of you. Fast forward some years, modeling amps have only improved in quality. Some, like the Fender Tonemaster line, impeccably model ONE amp. Others, like this Boss Katana, improve upon the imagination of the Line 6-type and offer users a wide array of effects (Boss Effects!). Listen up as Cooper and Chris discuss the inevitable improvements in processing, sound quality, and versatility in modeling amps as they compare the Spider and Katana.

  • Boss Katana vs Tube Amp: Can the Katana Keep Up?

    12:45

    Boss Katana vs Tube Amp: Does the Katana Keep up?

    Today, I am comparing my Boss Katana 100 MK2 guitar amplifier up against a similarly priced tube/valve amplifier. This test will cover how each amplifier sounds in the mix cutting a track, as well as isolated sound samples.

    The amplifiers in this video:
    ►Katana - (Sweetwater)
    ►Check out the Tube Amp - (Artist Guitars)
    ►My Guitars -
    (Using these links supports the channel at no extra cost to you)

    Each of these amplifiers sells for roughly the same price and I wanted to keep this test fair in terms of the price of the tube amplifier.

    The Katana is a Solid State amplifier with lots of digital effects and the tube amp features a set of EL84 and 12AX7 Tubes. I will be using a mix of the channels on both amplifiers and no other effects other than a little bit of Wah.

  • Yamaha THR10 and Why I Chose It Over Boss Katana: Explained by Professional Audio Engineer

    25:00

    Yamaha THR10. Why I chose it over Boss Katana explained by the professional audio engineer/mixer Andrew Zeleno. How it compares to Wizard Modern Classic 4500$ amplifier 100 Watts (AC/DC tech's company). We'll be talking about THR10, THR10C and THR10X. They are versatile guitar amplifiers for practicing and bedroom levels. You can get power tubes saturation based on digital emulation with really low volume. How to get a cranked amp with low volume. How it compares to guitar plugins. Why I prefer Yamaha over Wizard + Suhr Reactive Load + Rosen Digital/Ownhammer IRs when I need to write music or practice. You can use it for iphone or backing tracks. You have everything from clean to crunch to high gain. Hi gain verion THR10X has the crunch and the lead channel of Engl Powerball having amazingly deep low end and body of a sound as for this small box. Also this amp has a tuner, FXs, headphones out and AUX input. Plus it can be working on batteries. You have 5 present buttons. Also it can be controlled by an app on the computer. Katana amp is still too loud for me and I don't gig. Katana sounds good when it's loud. So I prefer quiet Yamaha. For THR10 you can change the firmware from v2 to v1 changing the tone. In the video I explain the sound difference between THR10 and THR10X. In general they have different sound. Also you get stripped down version of Cubase buying this amplifier. Also in a video I mention Softube Console 1 and DynAudio Lyd7 monitors. As effects you get: flanger, phaser, chorus, tremolo, delay, delay+reverb, spring reverb and hall reverb with long predelay and time.

    The list of all emulations:
    THR10 (V.1 and V.2)
    Clean = Fender Twin Reverb
    Crunch = VOX AC30
    Lead = Marshall Plexi
    Brit Hi = Marshall JCM800
    Modern = Mesa Boogie

    THR-10C
    Clean = Fender Deluxe
    Class A = Matchless DC30
    US Blues = Fender Blues Jr.
    Brit Blues = Marshall Bluesbreaker
    Mini = Dr. Z Mini-Z

    THR-10X
    Power 1 = Engl Powerball
    Power 2 = Engl Powerball (lead channel)
    Brown 1 = early Van Halen
    Brown 2 = later Van Halen
    Southern Hi = Dimebag Darrell
    Clean = Fender Deluxe

    My signal chain for that example was: Gibson SG with 498T - AKG c1000 mic - SSL SuperAnalogue Preamp - SSL Converter
    THe second example: Canon 80D on-camera mic

  • Boss Katana Air Impressions: BKA vs Yamaha THR10 and plugged in vs batteries

    13:14

    After playing around with the Boss Katana Air, I decided to compare it against the Yamaha THR10. Both are small and portable, one is wireless. Here are my deeper impressions of the Katana Air.

    Note that while I did a volume comparison, it appears the volume got clipped so you can't really tell how loud the Katana Air and THR10 are. They are both very loud - however, I will note that while on batteries, it wasn't loud enough to hurt my ears, which is what happened while plugged in.

  • Before you buy a Boss Katana MKII 50 Vs. 100 feature comparison

    Boss Katana MKII 50: or the

    This question kept me up for several nights as I weighed the options and features. I share my findings. The Boss Katana MKII 50 and 100 are amazing amps, but they don't have the same features. What features are missing in the 50?

  • Boss Katana MK I vs MK II

    21:09

    Boss Katana MK I vs MK II (Is The New One REALLY Better?)

    Boss recently released a new version of what is one of the world's most popular amps, the Boss Katana. The new Katana has seen some added features, but do they make it worth upgrading? Is there a difference in sound? Find out here.

  • Does the Yamaha THR30ii sound good with pedals?

    9:52

    One of the most interesting questions I got from my video 5 Cool Ways to Use the Yamaha THR10ii was, can you use outboard pedals with the THR?

    In this video, I think we found out that while, yes you can use pedals with the THR, it may not be the most optimal setup for you. In the video I'm using the Flat Mode most of the time, which sort of turns the THR into a 30 watt portable speaker, all the cabinet emulation is coming from the HX Stomp. At the end of the video, I turn off the HX Stomp IRs and use the THR speaker cabinet to provide the speaker voicing.

    I hope you found this video helpful. If you would like to support what I do here on YouTube, you can take a guitar lesson with me through my website, or buy one of my bands T-Shirts at one of the websites below.

    Yamaha THR10II (The Popular Practice Amp Gets An Update)

    Here's part 2 of this review:

    Yamaha's THR range has been incredibly popular. The THR looks good, many think it sounds great, and some people have even called the Yamaha THR the best practice amp out there. Now Yamaha have released a new version of the THR. It comes in three different models (THR10, THR10 wireless, and THR30 wireless), and the one I'm taking a look at is the THR10.
    Is it worth the hype? Find out in this video.

  • Boss Katana-50 MkII, 0.5W mode, metal sound test - Iron Savior - Battering Ram

    1:42

    I traded one of my spare Yamaha THR10 amps (I had two) for a Boss Katana-50 MkII. It was quick and easy to find a metal rhythm tone I liked, so I recorded a quick sound test video. I look forward to exploring this amp further, and testing different recording methods.

    Settings are shown at the beginning and end of the video. Even on 0.5W mode, the amp is plenty loud for the room.

    The song I'm playing is Iron Savior - Battering Ram.

    Guitar → Katana-50 MkII → Camera audio

    Video shot with Motorola G7 Power front camera.

    Video assembled in OpenShot Video Editor.

    Guitar: 1998 Jackson SHS1 Shannon Soloist. Bridge pickup: APC (Adder Plus Corporation) Persuader Lead humbucker. Only the bridge pickup was used to record this video. I keep this guitar tuned to standard and it matches the original Iron Savior recording.

  • Vox Cambridge 50

    25:09

    Vox Cambridge 50 (Affordable and Promising Modeling Amp)

    Everyone and their dog has a budget friendly modeling amp on the market. Some companies seem to have more than one. There's the Boss Katana, Marshall Code, Fender Mustang series, just to name a few. So so why should we care when Vox release the Cambridge 50? Well, because it actually seems fairly promising to be fair.

    The Vox has enough features to be versatile, but not too many. It's affordable, doesn't weigh a ton, you donn't have to hook it up to anything (although you can), it has a Celestion speaker, and the models it's modeling seem to be a good selection of amps. The real deal breaker is how it sounds of course. In this video I run through the sounds of the Cambridge, plus the built in effects (it has a few of those too), and I see how it handles an overdrive pedal, something that many modeling and solid state amps don't do too well. So how does the Vox Cambridge 50 fare? Let's see.
    Skip to the playing:
