Bobby Radcliff - Early In The Morning

    7:13

Bobby Radcliff began playing guitar at the age of 12 in Chevy Chase Maryland, after hearing the legendary Magic Sam perform live at the 1969 Ann Arbor Blues Festival. Bobby was so inspired by Magic Sam’s performance that he took it upon himself to venture off to Chicago to meet his newfound guitar idol. Bobby found Magic Sam in Cook County Hospital after Sam had suffered a major heart attack. After Sam recovered, he invited Bobby back to his home at 1615 South Harding Street, in the heart of Chicago’s West Side, where he and his family resided. Sam introduced Bobby to the West Side Chicago Blues scene at such venues as The Alex Club and the L & A Lounge.
Bobby spent the first half of the 1970’s performing in Washington DC with his own band. Members of his band included many of the great Washington DC players; Steve Shaw, Victor Spano, Dave Walker, Dick Heintze, Robbie Magruder and Danny Gatton. Bobby recorded his first 45 RPM single in 1974 on the Aladin Label.
In 1977, Bobby moved to New York City and became one of the house musicians at the Lone Star Café working with Kinky Friedman, Bernard Purdie, and the original Blues Brothers, featuring John Belushi and Roomful Of Blues. In 1984, Bobby recorded “Early In the Morning”, his first 33 RPM album.
In 1988, Bobby signed with Black Top Records, of which he recorded five albums; “Dresses Too Short”, “Universal Blues”, “There’s A Cold Grave In Your Way”, “Live At The Rynborn” and “Live At Tipitina’s”.
In 2005, Bobby recorded “Natural Ball” with producer Bill Bowman on the Rollo Label.
Bobby currently resides in New York City and has released his latest album, “Freaking Me Out!” (Krellno Records 2011).

Bobby Radcliff Trio - Terra Blues, NYC - 3.12.16

    10:18

Bobby Radcliff is one of the relatively obscure NYC blues guitar players, but a legend just the same. Man, can this guy play the blues, whether acoustic or electric, recalling the days of Magic Sam, a legend he sought out 40 years ago in Chicago. Inspiration!

Here's a couple songs from his nearly 3-hr set at Terra Blues in NYC on March 12, 2016. Bobby plays regularly at this intimate blues club located in the Village:

    Bobby Radcliff interview:
    Bobby's website:

    From Wiki...

Bobby Radcliff (born Robert Radcliff Ewan, September 22, 1951, Washington, D.C.) is an American blues guitarist and singer.

Radcliff was raised in Bethesda, Maryland, where he played in blues clubs after picking up the guitar at the age of 12. He also visited Chicago several times, where he met musicians such as Magic Sam. In 1977, he relocated to New York, where he took a job in a bookstore and played local clubs at night. In 1987 he began recording and performing full-time. His first studio recording was in 1985, and from 1989-1998 he recorded with Black Top Records.

Radcliff underwent hand and arm surgery in the late 1990s making minimal live appearances. In 2004 he released 'Natural Ball' (Rollo Records) and made a return to international performing. In 2011, he recorded Freaking Me Out (Krellno Records) which was his first all originals CD. This CD also features Radcliff's original artwork (on the front cover and inside).

Radcliff remains active as a bandleader and in demand guitarist. He has recently guested with: Al Copley's Roomful of Blues Reunion Band, The Nighthawks, Bob Margolin's All Star Band, Jimmy 'Fast Fingers' Dawkins, Mark Hummel & Rusty Zinn, and Bruce Ewan.

Byther Smith --- the Chicago blues, cult-figure popularized by his high-intensity performances and captivating song writing. Born in Mississippi, Byther Smitty Smith relocated to Chicago in the mid-50's and started his pursuit of music. A rhythm guitarist for Otis Rush, Smith honed his playing skills with tips from the likes of J.B. Lenoir (his first cousin), Robert Lockwood Jr & Hubert Sumlin. Smith's fiery fretwork and ferocious vocals hit like a heavyweight punch --- he can be downright scary, never a bad quality for a blues man.
