Bob Mintzer Big Band - Get Up!

    1:53

Get Up! is the Bob Mintzer Big Band's 20th release, on June 23, 2015. GET UP! is a collection of nine tracks that are clearly R & B influenced, but then go to many other places along the way. The big band instrumentation lends itself to this rhythmically intense music very nicely while allowing for a myriad of color and texture possibilities in the process. Using these relatively simple tunes as a springboard for harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic exploration was a real adventure.

Get up! Get up and dance to these infectious grooves that come from Africa by way of African American culture in the U.S., sometimes referred to as R & B, intersecting with the blues, Jazz, Afro-Cuban music, and that distinctly American sound that permeated the airwaves in the 1960s and beyond. Artists like James Brown, Sam and Dave, The Isley Brothers, all the Motown artists, and ultimately bands like Sly and the Family Stone, Tower of Power and Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters from the bay area (East Bay Grease!) are all part of the evolution of the sound.
Bob Mintzer grew up listening to this music. In New York City you could turn on WNEW FM in the evening and hear a Miles Davis cut followed by a Jimi Hendrix track, followed by John Coltrane, then Marvin Gaye, followed by something from Sly and the Family Stone. Training as a musician in NYC, one was exposed to Jazz, R & B music, Afro-Cuban music, ethnic music from all over the world, and just about every kind of music imaginable. So many possibilities in terms of combining elements to find new ways to play and write.

Bob Mintzer Big Band - New York Voices - Meeting of Minds

    2:02

    Available now at mcgjazz.org :

“Meeting of Minds” focuses on the integration of voices with the big band. The combination of the dynamic writing styles of Bob Mintzer and New York Voices' Darmon Meader, produces a very dense yet very fresh sonic palette.

Each arrangement transforms a classic song into a modern-day hit revealing the lasting power of a great song. In addition to the wonderful arrangements, the album showcases over a dozen powerful improvised solos from some of the top musicians in the world. The collaboration is truly a musically rich Meeting of Minds.

Produced by MCG’s Marty Ashby with all band arrangements by Mintzer except: “I Get Along Without You Very Well” arranged by Peter Eldridge and Meader and “You Go To My Head” arranged by Meader. All vocal arrangements are by Meader. “Meeting of Minds” also includes classic tracks: “Autumn Leaves,” “I Want To Be Happy,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “You Go To My Head,” “Old Devil Moon,” “Speak Low,” and “I’ll Remember April” in addition to Mintzer’s composition “Weird Blues.”

How To Record A Big Band in Five Hours - Bob Mintzer & The USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra

    6:26

What could be more fun and challenging than recording a big band in five hours? In this video by Bret 'Jazz Video Guy' Primack we bear witness to the recording process thanks to a true musical genius, Bob Mintzer, who in addition to leading his own big band and twenty year run with the Yellowjackets, is Professor of Jazz Studies at USC, where he leads the USC Thornton Jazz Orchestra. In April, after winning the Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Gen competition for best college big band, this group of remarkably talented young musicians, went into the studio to record with veteran engineer Bruce Botnick. Thanks to Bret's documentation, we are witness to the session, 10 tunes recorded in just over five hours!
