Ahh Micro Licks, these tiny little guys are responsible for so much Blues.  I view these short little licks as building blocks for a solid foundation in the Blues.  I recommend building a nice little war chest of micro licks because while cool on their own, they really shine when you link them together or use them as the base for a longer more developed musical idea.
In this lesson, we'll cover two super sweet micro licks in Open G Tuning.
We'll talk a bit about how to play each lick and the situations that they fit over but we'll also work them into a nice little example slide piece in Open G Tuning.

An open-G tuning allows a G-major chord to be strummed on all six strings with neither fretting of the left hand nor a capo. Like other open tunings, it allows the eleven major chords besides G major each to be strummed by barring at most one finger on exactly one fret. Open tunings are common in blues and folk music, and they are used in the playing of slide and bottleneck guitars.

Slide guitar can be the most rewarding and expressive style of playing the blues. It's freeing to bend and push notes beyond the confines of a fret. But it can certainly be the most difficult style of playing to get down.

In this lesson, we'll focus on building slide skills with this swampy 12 bar number in open g that will have you switching from a deep rhythm groove to soaring single-note melody lines.

Have a go at this one and good luck!

    Play on!

    ===============================================

When a beginner ventures into Open G for the first time, they usually stick to the open strings, 5th fret and 7th fret. For good reason too. You can barre across all six strings at those frets and you'll have some very important chords: The 1 chord (open) the 4 chord (5th fret) and the 5 chord (7th fret).

But as you advance a little, you'll want to start using other tones.

In this lesson, we'll not only cover a flashy lick that you've gotta know, but we'll cover a 12 bar blues in Open G that uses the all-important flat 7th interval on the 4 and 5 chords. This one small move helps this piece sound bluesy....gritty even.

Have a go at this one and good luck!

    Play on!

  • RESONATOR GUITAR SLIDE BLUES in Open G Tuning

    3:50

A resonator guitar is a great instrument for playing slide blues. This is an Icarus guitar, a Chinese made copy of a National Duolian. It's all stock, it hasn't been modified in any way except for taming the sharp fret ends. The strings are D'Addario EJ42. To be exact, this guitar is not tuned to open G but rather open F, which of course is the same type of tuning but a full tone lower. I forgot this information in the video. If you don't want to spend big money on a National this is not a bad alternative. The folks who sell them are really good to deal with too.

I'm convinced the bluesiest thing you can do on a guitar is run a slide up and down the strings. In this lesson, we're going full tilt on a funky slide-based groove in open g that will get your blood pumpin' for sure.

We'll break things down note-for-note and beat-by-beat. This one is certainly very rhythm focused, but there's a smart use of a MICRO LICK at the very end of this quick lesson.

Tune your trusty geetar to open G, grab a slide and let's get to it!

    Good Luck!

Today we are tuning our guitar to open G and exploring this classic blues tuning that is popular among the original blues masters Skip James, Elmore James and Big Broony and all the other giants from the delta as well as modern electric guitar blues rock giants like Keith Richards, Lindsey Buckingham and Jimmy Page.

At first we will walk you through the tuning and how to get in tune, after we will look at some general hot spots on the guitar neck, and then we will look at the shuffles that you need to play over the G, C and D chords. After we will add a turnaround and then the final little cherry on top is going to nice beginner blues turnaround to make your blues complete AND a bonus little lick that plays on the minor third/major third ambiguity that exists in blues music.

Muddy Waters Slide Lick in Open G

There's no doubt about it if you think mojo, you have to think Muddy, right?

Muddy Waters was the blues. His stage presence is unbelievable but the thing I love the most about Muddy's music is his slide playing.

In this lesson, I'll show you a very Muddy slide lick that works great as a turnaround...especially in acoustic blues. This particular lick works well in Open G and is a perfect follow up to Tuesday Blues Lesson 47 where we started groovin' some slide in a typical 12 bar blues format.

    TUESDAY BLUES #178

If you never picked up a guitar in your life, you'd swear that some blues was pretty easy to pull off. The sound isn't complicated, especially when a true master of the craft is playing the part.

I really think that the two licks we cover in this lesson fit this mold. They don't sound inherently difficult, but there's more than meets the eye....or ear :-)

    LICK #1 - Walkin' Blues

The first lick that we cover is from the intro to Walkin' Blues and there are a couple of parts of this lick that will help improve your slide playing. First, there's those quick brush up triplets that suddenly shift into single notes. Then, there's a huge position shift that Mr. Johnson seems to tackle with ease.

LICK #2 - Come on in my Kitchen

This is one of my favorite Robert Johnson moments. That little lick he plays right after delivering the lyric, It's goin' to be rainin' outdoors. The way he plays it is so natural. A casual listener would never know the technique needed to nail this lick especially with it's single note stabs that come out of no where.

Practice these two licks and focus on nailing them completely and you'll find your slide game improving. This is the awesome intersection (or crossroads) where learning songs and improving technique meet.

    Good luck and as always...

    Play On!

    Blues Lesson Open Tuning

I wish I could see the look on your face the first time you tune down to Open G and give the open strings a strum. Pure Magic. Even the open strings are an incredible sounding chord.

Some of the most compelling guitar riffs are in Open G tuning. You need to tune your guitar down into open G, and join the party! It's amazing how easy it is. The techniques, chords, and scales are much simpler. It's almost like an easy button for the guitar!

If you're a fan of the Stones, you're fan of open G tuning. Keith Richards from the rolling stones is quite famous for playing in Open G tuning. There's just something about the tuning that makes chords, and riffs way easier. More natural sounding as well! Keith Richards would often remove his low E string when playing in open G, but you don't have to. This is something I would recommend experimenting with if you have an extra guitar you can keep in Open G at all times.

I might be a little far fetched here. But I honestly feel like open G should have been the standard tuning for a guitar. Especially if you like to play the blues. Get ready to have fun, and make amazing music with half the effort!

6 Blues Turnarounds in Open G Tuning - Blues Guitar Tutorial

Today we are going to break down 6 different blues turnarounds in the open G guitar tuning. This tuning is so classic and sounds great with rock and blues, among other styles like classical music. What we are going to do is break them down each one at a time and we are going to discuss a little bit of theory. In terms of turn arounds you have ascending, where the melody moves up, and descending, where it moves down. Today all 6 of these turnarounds are going to be descending, we will highlight all three types. Your turnaround can either start on the major 3rd, and go major 3rd, minor 3rd, 2nd to root. Option two is 5th, b5th, 4th, major 3rd. Your 3rd option starts at the b7th and goes b7th, 6th, b6th, 5th. Those are the basis, but you can also further harmonize it and we will talk about that as well. The added variety can come in the second bar and how you work to the 5th chord or not, or the rhythm. We just we straight rhythm, but you can also go with triplets or you can also mix the two timings.

This particular tuning was very popular among old school blues musicians, the delta blues guitar players, piedmont blues players, and the original acoustic blues guys. If you mix this with a shuffle you can do some really interesting things as well and sounds great combined with the slide guitar.
