    ➢➢➢

Never again will we be stuck for a rhythm accompaniment part to play at jam night, with our ultimate blues rhythm guitar study, presented by Bobby Harrison.

“Eleven By Twelve” gives us eleven rhythm guitar ideas to play over a 12 bar shuffle groove. Our long backing track allows us to experiment with stabs, sliding 9ths, imitation horn lines, off-beat parts, organ-style riffs, the Texas Shuffle, Uptown and Downtown Chicago riffs and many more, giving us plenty of options for tonal variety.

    #BluesGuitarLessons #BluesRhythmGuitar #BluesGuitarCourse

We conclude this lesson with a short summary of everything we’ve covered so far in this part of our course, followed by more tips on improvisation and solo construction, before being given a brief overview of some of the exciting content we can expect to study over the coming lessons.

For reference, here is the order in which the rhythm guitar parts were performed over the backing track. Feel free to play them in your preferred order, but be aware that in the cases of the Uptown and Downtown shuffles, the bass line on the backing track changes accordingly.

Detailed Tab for each approach can be found in the individual rhythm guitar studies at the beginning of Level 2.

    Stabs
    Sliding 9ths
    Imitation Horn Lines
    Jump blues-style offbeats
    Organ-style riffs
    Texas-style shuffle
    Chicago-style “Downtown Shuffle”
    Chicago.style “Uptown shuffle”

Ask any instructor worth their salt and they'll tell you that students struggle more with rhythm than any other aspect of their playing. Ask a pro and they'll tell you that getting tons of studio work is all about rhythm chops. Ask any band looking to fill the guitar slot and they'll tell you it's the solid rhythm player they're interested in, not just the lead guitar pyrotechnician. In short, strong rhythm guitar skills pay the bills and clearly distinguishes the great players from the mediocre.

Presented by studio hot shot, Brad Carlton, the video guitar lessons in Rhythmology demonstrate essential techniques for spicing up your rhythm parts with bubble parts, keyboard voicings, hybrid picking, chord extensions, triple stops, fills and a bagful of other skills that will quickly advance your rhythm playing.

You'll play your way through the Rhythmology working with blues, rock, pop, jazz, funk, twang and fusion tracks structured around contemporary progressions and vamps.

    Tuesday Blues #216

You're sitting next to another guitarist. Someone says, play some blues and they kick off the classic shuffle. You could just follow along or...

How about adding a little something different to the mix?

In this lesson, we'll take a look at three blues rhythm guitar ideas for you to complement the standard blues shuffle.

    1. Improvise a walking bassline
    2. Add chord moves (stabs, chromatics and slides)
    3. Combine chord moves and micro licks

Try these quick tricks out and I'm sure you'll agree that things sound full and interesting versus just doubling the shuffle.

    Good luck and...

    Play On!

    John

    8:55

    - This is an easy way to jump in at any open jam and play a 12 bar blues without getting the way of the soloist.

The chords are based off the traditional 7th and 9th chord shapes that most people are familiar with. But we get rid of all but 2 notes and the voice leading makes it so you only have to shift one fret at a time.

It's a great move that I use all the time with a band. It shouldn't take long to learn and will be useful forever.

How To Play 12 Bar Blues | Blues Rhythm Guitar Lesson

Download the reference material for this lesson here:

The 12 bar blues is one of the most common blues chord progressions of all time. Learning to play a 12 bar blues is vital if you are going to jam with other musicians or play along to your favorite blues songs. Having this in your bag of blues rhythm guitar tricks will mean you will always be able to jump in at a blues jam and know exactly what to play!

While this is mainly a blues for beginners lesson, there is plenty of information for any level of guitar player. Blues guitar is the foundation for many other styles of music, so getting your blues guitar chops up is vital for all guitar players.

In this lesson I play a 12 bar blues progression, and then explain how the progression is constructed. I explain what a 1-4-5 chord progression is, and how you can use this knowledge to play blues rhythm guitar in any key. This isn't a guitar theory lesson, so I've kept it very simple.

To make this 12 bar blues chord progression sound a bit more bluesy, we will be playing 7th chords. I show you the exact finger placements of how to play each chord.

As described in the video, the end of the 12 bar blues chord progression can include a turnaround. I have another video that shows you what a turnaround is, and gives you 3 great examples of blues turnarounds that you can use. Check out that video here:

Blues guitar is all about feeling and emotion, even when you are playing rhythm guitar. So make sure you put feeling into every note and chord, make your guitar playing have something to say!

Blues Rhythm Chops Ex 1: Chord Fragments

Chord Fragments are fragments of larger chords and they are powerful blues rhythm guitar tools. See this example to learn how to use them straight away in your playing.

Blues Rhythm Chops Ex 2: 9th Chords

9th chords can act as substitutes for Dominant 7 chords, so instead of playing A7 in your 12 bar blues, you could play A9 instead. This adds much more colour to the 12 bar blues (and makes you sound like a way slicker player!)

Blues Rhythm Chops Ex 3: Blues Bassline Riffs

Why not ditch chords all together...and play a blues bassline riff instead! Here's one example of a blues bassline riff you can use. Try out some riff variations of your own remember.

Have fun spicing up your blues rhythm chops with this lesson and see you next time!

This is something every guitarist should know. From beginner to advanced,

I talk briefly about the chords you can play over a Blues Progression, in A Major.
I then show you something I think every guitarist should know - how to play Blues Rhythm Guitar using only the minor seventh and the major third from the chords. These modified chords can be referred to as shell voicings.

I then show you how you can experiment and modify these shell voicings by adding more notes to the top two strings or adding the root notes on the E and A strings.

This style of rhythm is great in COMBINATION with the usual lower register blues shuffle. Learn how to play this way, using whatever triad voicings you like. There are many ways you can play triads, while still using this concept.

Blues rhythm guitar is a must know skill for anyone interested in playing blues. Guess what? This exact same concept is often used in other style of music too. Country, rock, Americana, roots-based, singer songwriter, etc. In other words, it's WELL WORTH your time to learn how to do this in different keys and all over the neck, using a variety of triad voicings.

Let me know how you like this one!
