Visit for the tablature and MP3 jam track for this video. Every few days I'm adding a new guitar lesson video so be sure to check back! This video demonstrates a fairly simple and somewhat standard blues guitar lick that can be played on either an acoustic or electric guitar.

This is really intended for the beginner - intermediate player, although if you're an advanced player you might find it valuable as well. This video takes advantage of playing a double string solo (very similar to the style that Chuck Berry would use)

As always, if you have questions or comments ask away either here or at

  • Slow Blues Solo 1 - Beginner

    9:35

    - This beginner slow blues solo is available in intermediate and advanced difficulty levels. This lesson is very basic, and is mainly targeted at beginning guitar players. There is very little note bending, and no fast licks. Very simple.

The free version of this lesson shows you the notes to play, but the extended version goes into more detail about how to play each of the licks in this solo.

The extended version can be purchased at in high-definition, along with tablature.

  • 12 Bar Blues Guitar Lesson 1

    56

Here's a pretty basic 12 bar blues Lesson. You'll quickly hear that it's a very familiar sounding series of blues patterns that have been used again and again over they years, no doubt because they sound so cool that players from every generation of twangers have made sure they'd learn them and pass them on down through time. There is no one right way to play this kind of thing, so don't feel that you need to learn every little nuance and detail of my version. What you really want to try and emulate is The Feel. If you do want the TAB for this lesson, it can be found here -

While I played this on an electric because it was handy, it would work just fine on an acoustic as well... and in fact probably work better.

Probably The Most Valuable FREE Blues Guitar Lesson You’ll Ever Take - With TAB!

Here’s a 100% FREE, in depth blues guitar lesson with tab, taught by Bobby Harrison. In this tutorial, we will learn 15 essential blues licks in the context of a 12 bar blues solo over a shuffle groove in the good old-fashioned key of A.

Our solo spans two choruses (twice around the 12 bar progression) and features many classic blues licks and phrases in the styles of B.B. King, Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King and Albert Collins.

These 15 licks feature classic blues tonality, along with chord tones that really highlight the changes. These are all extremely usable ideas that you can incorporate into your own playing. Each lick breakdown features on-screen tab

In addition to learning the solo, we’re also going to cover a very cool rhythm guitar part that you can try out next time you find yourself at a blues jam. Enjoy!

The lick and solo tutorial starts at 10:15.

The guitar in this video was custom made by Dave Walsh at Eternal Guitars & Hot Rod Pickups.

The Pickups are also by Hot Rod Pickups: “S92” single coil in the bridge and the “Timeless” single coils in the middle and neck positions.

Playing with downstrokes and upstrokes is a big part of developing your groove, or your ability to not just play something in time but to make it feel really good. It's like the way someone can sing the right notes of a song, or they can really deliver the song, and make the hair stand up on your arms. Watch a really great guitar player at work and you'll notice how their strumming hand seems locked in with the music.

  • 10 BEST Blues Guitar Licks - TrueFire Guitar Lessons

    5:12

This new video series features some of the best guitar licks in the TrueFire library as voted on by our community. In this volume, we're featuring 10 blues licks from top educators. See below for quick links, breakdowns, and more information:

Lick #1 - 0:03 - If You Be from Jeff McErlain's 30 Sweet Blues Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
Man, I love old Fleetwood Mac and Peter Green. I've learned so much from him and his playing. The song If You Be My Baby was particularly eye-opening for me. The song has a very strong main melody that plays against the horn line. The song is a D major blues and the melody is a textbook Peter Green approach of mixing both the major and minor pentatonic scales. Green often avoided the flatted 7th when soloing in favor of the natural 6th found in the major pentatonic scale. This definitely adds a sweeter sound than what we'll hear a lot of in this course. This song can be found on the excellent Mr. Wonderful record released in 1968, a must have!

    Lick #2 - 0:30 - Blueski from Jeff McErlain's 30 Smokin' Blues-Rock Guitar Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
This is another tough lick at first, but like many licks, once you get the idea it becomes much easier to play. It has a certain feel to it that kinda takes over that's really fun. This is similar to something Van Halen might do with that triplet swing feel and a blues scale. If you pay attention, you can hear that it's a repeated descending melodic pattern using an Em blues scale.

Lick #3 - 1:03 - Queen of Spades from Mike Zito's 30 Blues Americana Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
Another Classic Robert Johnson lick and turnaround from the song Little Queen of Spades.

    Lick #4 - 1:20 - Etouffee from Steve Trovato's 50 Voodoo Blues Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
This is a great lick that I stole from Robben Ford in a song called 'Up the Line'. I love the groove and his feel is just magical. It’s based out of the blues scale but there are voodoo elements resolving to the major 3rd. This is a long lick and the rhythm is tricky so learn it in small pieces and practice it slowly.

    Lick #5 - 1:51 - Bona Massa from Jay-P's 30 Cutting-Edge Blues Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
This blues lick is a Joe Bonamassa type of blues lick with a Stevie Ray Vaughan vibe. We're in the key of G.

    Lick #6 - 2:26 - Signature Hammer from Anthony Stauffer's 50 Monster SRV Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
Now we're going to learn a hammer-on/pull-off combination that Stevie used a lot. While this is one of the most recognizable SRV'isms, in my opinion, it's more important to master the previous segments before learning this one. If you don't, it's very easy to rely on this one lick as your fallback when you run out of ideas.

Lick #7 - 2:45 - Out on the Lamb from Jeff McErlain's 50 Blues Guitar Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
Where does good tone come from? The quest for that perfect tone, whatever that may be to you, may be found in an amp, guitar or pedals. It starts and ends with your hands, yes gear makes a difference but only after the work of sounding good has been put in. I find it funny, no matter what amp I play through, it still sounds like me just playing through a different amp. That being said, I love gear!

    Lick #8 - 3:14 - Real Mother from Richard van Bergen's 30 Down-Home Blues Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
If you want to hear mean and aggressive blues licks, Johnny Guitar Watson is your man! He played without a pick, using his index finger and thumb. This lick is played in G with the guitar capoed to the third fret. It fits the first four bars of a 12-bar blues. Jimmie Vaughan is the contemporary master in this style.

Lick #9 - 3:50 - Classic SRV from Corey Congilio's 50 Texas Blues Guitar Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
Blues players would almost always play minor pentatonic over major sounding songs. Stevie does this in the tune Lenny. This lick is out of the E minor pentatonic. There are some great slides and bends in this one.

Lick #10 - 4:40 - Get Freed from Corey Congilio's 50 Progressive Blues Guitar Licks
--- Breakdown w/ tab, notation, and jam track:
This lick is from Audley Freed's solo in Cry Of Love's tune called Peace Pipe. That song was a #1 Billboard hit in 1993! Wow, hard to imagine that there was this level of great guitar playing in a #1 hit. I miss those days! The lick is in the key of B. There are some great double stops and bends in this one.

1:00 How to play a minor pentatonic scale shape. This is one of the most important scales you need to know for playing blues solos, blues licks and improvising. There are a number of different ways to play the minor pentatonic scale on the guitar neck but this is the best one to start with and contains lots of classic and awesome sounding blues licks. Check out the pattern if you don't know it!

2:20 Here's your first blues lick. You hear it in the playing of all the greats- Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy - everyone! It's a great lick for starting a blues solobut realy works almost anywhere in the 12 bar blues.

5:00 Here's an awesome blues lick in the style of Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's also using the A minor pentatonic pattern we looked at a minute ago. Learn it and practice using it in your blues solos - it'll turn a few heads for sure.

7:35 Another A minor pentatonic lick complete with blues curls, quarter tone bends and a funky cool sounding string bend on the top E string. Check out the fingering tips for bending here too!

12:08 A classic Eric Clapton style lick, reminiscent of his classi blues guitar work with John Mayall and Cream. Advice on using slides, pre bends and more. Check out the cool bending move that's used several times throughout this lick. It'll test your bending strenghth and finger independence. Good luck!

18:49 Take a look at this extended A minor pentatonic pattern. It's chock full of awesome sounding blues licks and ideas as heard in the playing of all the blues guitar legends. Check it out, it'll transform your blues guitar playing if you don't already know it.

21:10 You've heard this one in the solos of greats like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King and Buddy Guy. It's one of the best and most versatile licks you'll ever learn. It's using the top bit of the extension we just added to the minor pentatonic scale. Powerful stuff this lick - check it out.

24:30 Look at this simple change you can make to the minor pentatonic scale to get a wich=ked and useful sound. It's the kind of trick we hear in the playing of legends like BB King and Freddie King.

25:32 Funky BB King style lick for ya! Check out that cool double stop at the start. It's almost the kind of thing you hear in the playing of jazz guitarists like Charlie Christian and T Bone Walker. That could be where BB stole it from! Notice how it uses the modified minor pentatonic scale we just looked at.

28:40 Eric Clapton style blues lick using the extended minor pentatonic shape we saw earlier in this lesson. Starts with a cool double stop slide. Then into a cheeky little pre bend before sliding up the G string then back down to end the lick. Funky, cool and worth learning and exploring.

31:07 Advice on learning licks and how to apply them to whatever level your playing is at. Don't be afraid to simplify things to make them easier to play and learn and more useful to you when you solo. Also ceate variations and make up your very own licks based on these!
