The Best of John Coltrane - John Coltrane Greatest Hits - John Coltrane Full Album

John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career, Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension. He remains one of the most influential saxophonists in music history. He received numerous posthumous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize in 2007, and was canonized by the African Orthodox Church.[2] His second wife was pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane. The couple had three children: John Jr. (1964–1982), a bassist; Ravi (born 1965), a saxophonist; and Oran (born 1967), also a saxophonist.

  • Donald Byrd - Black Byrd

    7:21

R,I.P MR. BYRD....THANK YOU FOR THE GREAT MEMORIES AND GREAT MUSIC!
Review by Steve Huey: Purists howled with indignation when Donald Byrd released Black Byrd, a full-fledged foray into R&B that erupted into a popular phenomenon. Byrd was branded a sellout and a traitor to his hard bop credentials, especially after Black Byrd became the biggest-selling album in Blue Note history. What the elitists missed, though, was that Black Byrd was the moment when Byrd's brand of fusion finally stepped out from under the shadow of his chief influence, Miles Davis, and found a distinctive voice of its own. Never before had a jazz musician embraced the celebratory sound and style of contemporary funk as fully as Byrd did here -- not even Davis, whose dark, chaotic jungle-funk stood in sharp contrast to the bright, breezy, danceable music on Black Byrd. Byrd gives free rein to producer/arranger/composer Larry Mizell, who crafts a series of tightly focused, melodic pieces often indebted to the lengthier orchestrations of Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield. They're built on the most straightforward funk rhythms Byrd had yet tackled, and if the structures aren't as loose or complex as his earlier fusion material, they make up for it with a funky sense of groove that's damn near irresistible. Byrd's solos are mostly melodic and in-the-pocket, but that allows the funk to take center stage. Sure, maybe the electric piano, sound effects, and Roger Glenn's ubiquitous flute date the music somewhat, but that's really part of its charm. Black Byrd was state-of-the-art for its time, and it set a new standard for all future jazz/R&B/funk fusions -- of which there were many. Byrd would continue to refine this sound on equally essential albums like Street Lady and the fantastic Places and Spaces, but Black Byrd stands as his groundbreaking signature statement.

Shake it now, go ladies, it's a livin' dream
    Love Life Live
Come play the game, our world is free
Do what you want but scream

We know a place where the nights are hot
It is a house of funk
    Females and males
Both young and old, called the disco

The D.J. plays your favorite blast
Takes you back to the past, music's magic (puff)
Bump bump bump get bump with some flash, people

Rock rock to the Planet Rock, don't stop (x2)

The Soul Sonic Force - Mr. Biggs, Pow Wow, and M.C. Globe
We emphasize to show, we got ego
Make this your night, just slip it right, and by day
As the people say, live it up, shucks
No work or play, our world is free
Be what you be - be

Rock rock to the Planet Rock, don't stop (x2)

You're in a place where the nights are hot
Where nature's children dance and say the chants
On this Mother Earth, which is our rock
The time has come, and work for soul, show you really got soul
Are you ready hump bump bump, get bump, now let's go, house

Twist and turn, the you let your body slide
You got the body rock and pop, bounce and pounce
Everybody just rock it, don't stop it
    Gotta rock it, don't stop
Keep tickin' and tockin', work it all around the clock

Everybody keep rockin' and clockin' and shockin' and rockin', go house
Everybody say, rock it, don't stop it (Crowd repeats)
Well hit me, Mr. Biggs (Crowd repeats)

  • Using Discogs to Identify First Pressings of Vinyl Records

    7:53

A1 in the deadwax doesn't necessarily indicate that a record is a first pressing. In this video we take two copies of the same record and use Discogs to identify which one is a first pressing and which one is a re-press.

Using catalog numbers, matrix numbers, and other deadwax info etched into the runout groove of a vinyl record is somewhat of a detective game.

    LYRICS
My guilt and my shame always sell me short - always feel the same
And my face and my soul always wear me thin - always under control
But the longest hours you'll have in your life
Are the ones you sit through to know if you're right
So I'll wait, but I pray that I'm wrong
Because I think I know what's going on

So let me get this straight... the only will is my own
I do whatever I want and stay alone
All my decisions make it untouchable and tainted
I'm gonna suffer for the rest of my life
But I will always find a way to survive
I'm not a failure, but I know what it's like
I can take it or leave it... or die

STAY - You don't always know where you stand
'Til you know that you won't run away
There's something inside me that feels
    Like breathing in sulfur...

My life is undone - and I'm a sinner to most but a sage to some
And my gods are untrue - I'm probably wrong, but I'm better than you
And the longest hours I've had in my life
Were the ones I went through to know I was right
So I'm safe, but I'm a little outside
I'm gonna laugh when I'm buried alive

STAY - You don't always know where you stand
'Til you know that you won't run away
There's something inside me that feels
    Like Breathing in Sulfur...

    LIKE BREATHING IN SULFUR

  • My Top 10 Jazz Guitarists! - Jens Larsen

    27:36

➡️➡️Check out Jens Larsen's YouTube Channel here:
➡️➡️Learn more about Jens Larsen & his favorite jazz guitarists here:

Today, Jens Larsen is here to share his Top 10 Jazz Guitarists!

    1. Charlie Christian
Christian is arguably the godfather of jazz and one of the first people to really start using the electric guitar. He was the guitar player with Benny Goodman, a clarinet player and a really big star at the time, so that got him a lot of good exposure.

    2. Jim Hall
Coming out of the bebop era, everyone was playing long lines and lots of notes, but Jim Hall was always playing fewer notes, and was still so rhythmically interesting and very melodic.

    3. Wes Montgomery
He managed to not only play hardcore jazz, but also cross over into more popular music. Later in his career, you will find him playing with a string orchestra, playing pop tunes. He has tons of groove, lots of arpeggios, octaves – which are his signature thing – and also chord solos.

    4. Pat Martino
He is mostly famous for his long, flowing eighth note lines and his very complex harmonies. He essentially has his own theory on how to understand music and how to think about harmony.

    5. George Benson
He followed in the steps of Wes Montgomery and managed to cross over into pop music. He’s a truly amazing and intuitive technical jazz guitarist. What is also amazing about him is that he is also a great singer, and he has such an incredible connection between his voice and his fingers, where he can play and also sing and scat along.

    6. Joe Pass
His Guitar Style book is really the book that almost everybody learned to play guitar from! He did a lot of work with pianist Oscar Peterson, and vocalist Ella Fitzgerald throughout his career. His ability on the guitar, in terms of feeling like a complete orchestra by himself, is really unparalleled!

    7. John Scofield
Scofield has been a huge influence on jazz as a whole. He has has a very long career, starting with being the guitar player for Miles Davis in the 1980s. The way that he can work with playing behind the beat, playing bluesy phrases, and also having a very modern sound is amazing.

    8. Pat Metheny
What makes him so unique and influential is that he is always looking for new ways to create new sounds. He is also one of the first – if not the first – jazz guitarists to have a wet-dry-wet rig, which is quite an extensive set of amplifiers on the stage.

    9. Kurt Rosenwinkel
He has these really strong melodies, but because he is also a piano player, he is also very strongly rooted in a lot of bebop. So there are signs of modern in him, but also some very traditional signs to him. He is also very good at adding chords to his solo lines, and comping himself, which is something that really sets him apart from other guitarists.

    10. Gilad Hekselman
What drew Jens to him was his work with Ari Hoenig – a fantastic jazz drummer – and all the rhythmical things they were doing, as the way they played together was just magical. While this is a list of guitar players, Jens says that one of the most important things to him, is how the people he listens to work alongside the rhythm sections and the things they are able to do together.

Their discography is as varied and hard to pin down as their constant line-up changes; the one constant being Mr. Robert Fripp on guitar. So how do these incredible 13 albums rank for me? • JACKIE McLEAN nursery blues

    5:16

    album : tippin' the scales

Recorded in between his modernist masterpieces Let Freedom Ring and One Step Beyond, Tippin' the Scales finds Jackie McLean returning to a safer, more straightforward hard bop scenario for a short spell. Since the album wasn't really in keeping with the direction McLean was heading (and since that direction proved to be successful), it stayed in the vaults for 22 years before finally seeing the light of day in 1984. As one might expect, given the nearly universal quality of McLean's Blue Note output, Tippin' the Scales is solid from top to bottom, even if it's not nearly as forward-looking as its predecessor. There's a lot of bluesy hard bop with a few unpredictable twists and turns, and the presence of pianist Sonny Clark lends a cool tone to the session overall, making for a nice contrast with McLean's frequently surging passion. Clark contributes three of the six pieces, which are in keeping with his laid-back, swinging style, highlighted by the amiable, appropriately titled Nicely. There are also two McLean originals -- the fairly challenging title track and the more basic Rainy Blues -- and a rendition of the standard Cabin in the Sky, where McLean's on-the-edge timbre and intonation are put to surprisingly warm use. Though it's one of the more conventional items in McLean's discography, Tippin' the Scales offers an opportunity to hear the altoist in an uncommonly relaxed quartet setting, playing (along with anchor Clark, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Art Taylor) at a typically high level of musicianship.

  • Anita Baker - Christmas Fantasy

    4:35

Christmas Fantasy is a song written by Anita Baker and Barry Eastmond. Anita's accompanied by Nathan East (bass); Ricky Lawson (drums); and Barry Eastmond (keyboards).

Christmas Fantasy is the seventh studio album by American R&B singer Anita Baker. It is Baker's first (and only) holiday album, and was released on October 4, 2005 by Blue Note Records. The album peaked at number 120 on the Billboard 200, and number 31 on the R&B chart.

For the album, Baker performed several classic Christmas songs such as: I'll Be Home for Christmas, O Come All Ye Faithful, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and Christmas Time is Here (which received a Grammy nomination). Frosty's Rag is a re-imagined version of Frosty the Snowman, and also featured is Baker's rendition of the Broadway Holiday song My Favorite Things.

The album also includes three original compositions by Baker: Moonlight Sleighride, Family of Man and Christmas Fantasy.

    Santa, make him love me
    Santa, just help me
    Tell me I'll be loved
I need a lover to call my mine
    I adore him
    Can't ignore him
    Always on my mind
Don't you know the man's so fine
    I've been good
    I've behaved like I should
    I've done all I could
    Whatever he wants from me
    Whatever he needs I'll be
Just set him beneath my tree
    He's my Christmas fantasy
    And that's all I need
    I'm begging you, Santa please
    Slide him down my chimney
    He's my Christmas fantasy

    Santa, my one wish
    Top of my list
    Is our first Christmas kiss
Is something that I can't resist
    Santa, maybe
    I'll be his baby
I've got to make him mine
There's nothing like a love divine
    And I've been good
    I've behaved like I should
    Santa, if you would
    Whatever he wants from me
    Whatever he needs I'll be
Just set him beneath my tree
    He's my Christmas fantasy
    And that's all I need
    I'm begging you, Santa please
    Slide him down my chimney
    He's my Christmas fantasy

    Whatever he wants from me
    Whatever he needs I'll be
Just set him beneath my tree
    He's my Christmas fantasy
    And that's all I need
    I'm begging you, Santa please
    Slide him down my chimney
    He's my Christmas fantasy
I love him, yes I do
    Yeah I'm begging, begging you
    Send him all to me
    Please
Santa, can I, Santa, can I have a man?
    Will you understand?
