  • Pino Palladino + Blake Mills: Tiny Desk Concert

    21:41

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

    Nikki Birch | June 17, 2021
The studio backdrop of this Tiny Desk (home) concert is the perfect setting for the dynamic duo headlining this project. Pino Palladino is a prolific bassist whose sound you're already intimately acquainted with (even if you don't know it). Blake Mills, a guitarist and two-time Grammy nominee for producer of the year, has an impressive catalog of his own. Together, in the studio, the topshelf sidemen are in their element, distilling the sonic creativity that is the first release under Palladino's name, Notes With Attachments.

Eight pulsing calls from saxophonist Sam Gendel usher us into Just Wrong a melodic meditation that unfolds like a blossom in timelapse. Guitar, bass, sax and Abe Rounds' colorful dustings of percussion in this song are magical; we soar with the musicians through varied repetitions of the melody before they gently set us back on our feet. The afterimage of our flight is still fading away when Palladino greets the viewers with a short and sweet introduction before opening Ekuté, a tune that explores traditional West African music, jazz and rock influences with a few modern touches of technology. Djurkel, the final offering in this set, is also experimental in nature. Palladino's trademark bass sound lies in the cut, the fertile ground on which Mills, Gendel and Rounds dance dreamily around each other. This is session musicianship at its best. Each watch reveals new depths to the mastery.

LyricsSave The Last Dance For Me (Live)-Blake Mills&Derek Trucks
You can dance every dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye, let him hold you tight
You can smile every smile for the man
Who held your hand 'neath the pale moonlight
But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, mmm
Oh, I know that the music's fine
Like sparkling wine go and have your fun
Laugh and sing but while we're apart
Don't give your heart to anyone
But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, mmm
Baby, don't you know I love you so?
Can't you feel it when we touch?
I will never, never let you go
I love you, oh, so much
'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arm's you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me...

Blake Mills Don't Tell Our Friends About Me - Upper Darby, PA - 06/27/2012

This Blake Mills session is a b-side to a session we released last summer when Blake was in town opening and performing with Fiona Apple. He knew he wouldn't have that much time to do the session, but really wanted to do it. So he asked our thoughts on using an empty Tower Theatre as our setting while he sound checked. Without hesitation, we said said, 'yes' almost immediately.

For the first session, Blake Mills reworked a version of Hey Lover and in this session, he performed Don't Tell Our Friends About Me. it's a tune that's not on any of his records, but one that he plays live. If you don't know much about Blake and his guitar skills, just do you yourself and familiarize yourself with him. Enjoy.

Really interesting solo from Blake over this two chord vamp at the end of the song Crescent City. Some difficult bits with sliding chords that changes shapes, spread voicing hammer-ons/pull-offs and things like that. His creativity on the guitar has always amazed me!

Ah yes, before. We recorded this on the way to NAMM 2020, when life seemed (relatively) normal and bass harmonicas seemed really important. • Blake Mills interviewed by Pablo Held

    3:8:38

My dear friend Jonas Burgwinkel was the one who told me about Blake Mills first, hipping me to his album “Heigh Ho”. I liked it right away. But it was Blake’s “Mutable Set” that completely turned me around. It really hit me and I somehow became addicted to it, listening to it all the time. It’s probably the record I listened to the most during 2020. I love to get lost in music like that.
Blake actually changed the way I listen to music, making me more aware of the impact of great production on a record. And there’s a patience and honesty in his music that really moves me: Being a killer guitarist while having total restraint, never showing off — that’s rare. To me, Blake is of this singular breed of artists that are totally unpredictable, where you never know what they’ll do next. I mean, I couldn’t have predicted “Look” after “Heigh Ho” or “Notes with Attachments” after “Mutable Set”. Can’t wait to hear what he’ll come up with next. But I already know that I’ll be listening closely.
A few notes about the story behind this interview:

Chris Weisman helped me get in touch with Blake. Our interview went great, we talked a lot about “Mutable Set” and I was super excited to share it as soon as possible. However, when the first single of the Blake Mills/Pino Palladino record was released soon after, I knew I needed to talk to him once more. There would have been no point in releasing the interview without addressing this new music. I’m so grateful that Blake agreed on another talk with me. In our second conversation we went through every song on the new album and Blake offered incredible insights into the process behind it.

  • Blake Mills Blues Solo Transcription/Lesson

    21:56

Blake Mills is one my biggest influences and to me it seems like he's on a different level than most other musicians. Point in case, this video. At the 2013 Crossroads Guitar Festival he joined an all star band in playing the Booker T & the MG's classic Green Onions and was one of the guitarists who took a solo. And what a solo! THIS is what modern blues guitar should be if you ask me, soulful phrasing, great tension and release, among other tasty things. So in this video I'll do a full transcription of the solo and teach it to you along the way, lick by lick, easy to understand (hopefully).
