  • Dynasty - Black Dyke Band conducted by Nicholas Childs

    16:29

Dynasty was premiered at the 2019 British Open Brass Band Championships and pays tribute to one of the brass community's legendary figures, Harry Mortimer (1902 - 1992). Using key passages from Mortimer's autobiography On Brass as the source for the narrative and in keeping with the heritage nature of the subject, the work takes the form of a Symphonic Poem, a musical structure first introduced to contest audiences at the Crystal Palace in 1913. The work opens with a four-note leitmotif and the timeline unfolds as follows:
0:06 1 - Harry (One's destiny decided at birth “I'll make him the best cornet player in England”).
2:21 2 - War (Why do the nations so furiously rage together? Fred volunteers for military service)
3:50 3 - Theatre (And suddenly “I dashed to the rescue like a hero in the silent movies I was about to get to know so well”)
4:34 4 – Journey (Rejoice greatly “A new life in Cheshire with a promising band called Foden's”)
6:45 5 – Together (Come unto me “A golden age”)
7:48 6 – Farewell (For behold, darkness “Fred's death surely marked the passing of an era”)
11:30 7 – Amen (The Trumpet shall sound - Farewell reprised)

  • Black Dyke Band: Journey Into Freedom | Eric Ball

    12:21

#blackdykeband #journeyintofreedom #ericball The Black Dyke Band (conducted by Nicholas Childs) perform Journey Into Freedom by Eric Ball. October 11, 2003 - Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham.
Composed to be used as the Championship test piece for bands competing at the Royal Albert Hall in 1967, Eric Ball’s Journey Into Freedom is one of his most popular works. The work has endured the test of time, being used twice more for contests, as well as being a Championship band staple.

Journey Into Freedom has strong links to the time it was composed as Ball had very strong ideas to what he wants both the listeners and players to realise:

“Whether they know it or not, today’s competing amateur musicians – and the tens of thousands more they represent – are helping to keep open the ‘Windows of Heaven’ in this harsh materialsitic age. Focus on some unexpressed longings of the human heart. In the realms of the spirit, mankind’s greatest victories can be won. May today’s brass band festival give us all hope and inspiration for these troubled times, as well as entertainment and happiness.”

By the time Britain had reached the late 1960s, people had seen the Cold War escalate which in turn affected the traditional values by disaffected youth. Journey Into Freedom was Ball’s way of seeking reaffirmation of his belief that love and spiritual fulfillment through God could still be achieved, even against such a depressing and violent background. It was every person for themselves at this time, with Ball’s music reflecting some of these emotions.

    9:33

#blackdykeband #catstales #petergraham The Black Dyke Band (conducted by Nicholas Childs) perform Cats Tales by Peter Graham. June 13, 2010 at Leeds Beckett University.
Programme Note by the Composer :
In the early 1980’s I had the good fortune to live and work in New York City. Since the 1930’s The Big Apple has enjoyed a reputation as the jazz capital of the world. Indeed, jazz seemed to be a part of the very fabric of everyday life in the city. One might pass Frank Sinatra leaving The Players (Club) or Buddy Rich en route to a gig, while a few
blocks south of my apartment the famous Blue Note Club played host to a succession of legendary jazz “Cats”, from Dizzy Gillespie to rising star Wynton Marsalis.

Cats Tales pays tribute to four wonderful musicians who shared a love of jazz and the city. New York born Elmer Bernstein is best remembered for his legendary film scores.
Here Catalonia brings to mind some of those epic moments before a musical gear change that references the work of his contemporary colleague, “Bernstein East”, aka Leonard
Bernstein. The presence of West Side Story looms large here.
Henry Mancini studied his craft at the famous Julliard School in the Upper West Side. His most famous composition (which concerned a cat of the pink variety) provides the
inspiration for the 2nd movement, Catwalk.

Finally, saxophone legend Sonny Rollins’s jazz standard Airegin is given a contrafact treatment in Scat! allowing a number of instrumental soloists to shine.

  • Black Dyke Band: Harrisons Dream | Peter Graham

    14:20

#harrisonsdream #petergraham #blackdykeband The Black Band (conducted by Nicholas Childs) perform Harrison's Dream by Peter Graham - June 1, 2009 at Leeds Beckett University.

Harrison's Dream was set as the Championship Section Test piece for the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain finals at the Royal Albert Hall, London - October 2000.

    COMPOSER’S NOTE
At 8.OOpm on the 22nd of October 1707, the Association, flagship of the Royal Navy, struck rocks off the Scilly Isles with the loss of the entire crew. Throughout the rest of the evening the remaining three ships in the fleet suffered the same fate. Only 26 of the original 1,647 crew members survived. This disaster was a direct result of an inability to calculate longitude, the most pressing scientific problem of the time. It pushed the longitude question to the forefront of the national consciousness and precipitated the Longitude Act. Parliament funded a prize of £20,000 to anyone whose method or device would solve the dilemma.

For carpenter and self-taught clockmaker John Harrison, this was the beginning of a 40 year obsession. To calculate longitude it is necessary to know the time aboard ship and at the home port or place of known longitude, at precisely the same moment. Harrison’s dream was to build a clock so accurate that this calculation could be made, an audacious feat of engineering.

This work reflects on aspects of this epic tale, brilliantly brought to life in Dava Sobel’s book Longitude. Much of the music is mechanistic in tone and is constructed along precise mathematical and metrical lines. The heart of the work however is human - the attraction of the £20,000 prize is often cited as Harrison’s motivation. However, the realisation that countless lives depended on a solution was one which haunted Harrison. The emotional core of the music reflects on this, and in particular the evening of 22nd October 1707.

    14:11

#blackdykeband #redpriest #philipwilby The Black Dyke Band (conducted by Nicholas Childs) perform Red Priest by Philip Wilby. June 13, 2010 at Leeds Beckett University.

RED PRIEST BY PHILIP WILBY - CONCERTO AFTER VIVALDI
    Three movements:
    01. Arrival
    02. Beloved Sleep
    03. Fuga
During his lifetime, Antonio Vivaldi was known as 'il Prete Rosso', the Red Priest, thanks to his youthful ordination and his flaming red hair. The son of a violinist at San Marco in Venice, Vivaldi's musical pedigree was impeccable and an excellent start to his career was coupled with astounding energy and productivity. His vast output of concerti grossi, using soloists in groups, inspired this composition and performers may choose appropriate stage positions for the various groupings of cornets and trombones, spaced around the performance area. The score quotes freely from some of Vivaldi's most popular compositions, including 'Winter' from The Four Seasons, the motet Nisi Dominus, the famous Gloria and the fugue from the Concerto grosso in D minor found in L'Estro Armonico.
However, it is the musical spirit of Vivaldi, a close contemporary of both Handel and Casanova, that inspired this music, which should be played with a mixture of accuracy and abandoned virtuosity. The musical images in this piece have clear associations in the composer's mind with individual Venetian locations, ranging from bustling street scenes to vaulted interiors, and describing the famous journey down the Grand Canal, past the Doge's Palace, to the Ospedale della Pietà where Vivaldi worked for so many years.

    Music by Nicholas Brodszky.
    Words by Paul Francis Webster.

    I'll walk with God
    From this day on
His helping hand I'll lean upon
This is my prayer my humble plea
May the Lord be ever with me

There is no death though eyes grow dim
There is no fear when I'm near to him
    I'll lean on him forever
    And he'll forsake me never

He will not fail me as long as my faith is strong
What ever road I may walk alone

    I'll walk with God
    I'll take his hand
I'll talk with God he'll understand
    I'll pray to him
    Each day to him

And he'll hear the words that I say
His hand will guide my throne and rod
    And I'll never walk alone
    While I walk with God.
