  • Maria Callas Live: Bizets Carmen Habanera, Hamburg 1962

    6:22

Callas’s only operatic appearances in Germany were Lucia di Lammermoor, with Karajan conducting, in Berlin in 1955, and La sonnambula in Cologne in 1957, but in both 1959 and 1962 she made concert tours of the country, visiting Hamburg twice. The video recordings of her concerts in the city showcase her in a dazzling variety of Italian and French repertoire for both soprano and mezzo-soprano: three contrasting Verdi roles (Lady Macbeth, Elvira from Ernani and Elisabetta from Don Carlo); Imogene from Bellini’s Il pirata; Giulia from La vestale; Chimène from Massenet’s Le Cid; Verdi’s most explosively dramatic aria for mezzo-soprano – Eboli’s ‘On don fatale’ from Don Carlo; Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Seguédille and, from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Angelina’s final rondo, which magically combines modest charm and sparkling virtuosity.

  • Georges Bizet - Toreador

    4:31

    From the Opera Carmen.

Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre,
Señors, señors car avec les soldats
    Oui, les Toréros, peuvent s'entendre ;
    Pour plaisirs, pour plaisirs,
    Ils ont les combats !
    Le cirque est plein,
    c'est jour de fête !
    Le cirque est plein du haut en bas ;
    Les spectateurs, perdent la tête,
    Les spectateurs s'interpellent à grand fracas !
    Apostrophes, cris et tapage
Poussés jusques à la fureur !
Car c'est la fête du courage,
C'est la fête des gens de cœur !
    Allons ! en garde ! allons ! allons ! Ah !
Toréador, en garde ! Toréador ! Toréador !
Et songe bien, oui, songe en combattant
    Qu'un œil noir te regarde,
    Et que l'amour t'attend,
    Toréador, L'amour, l'amour t'attend !
Et songe bien, oui, songe en combattant
    Qu'un œil noir te regarde,
    Et que l'amour t'attend,
    Toréador, L'amour, l'amour t'attend !

Tout d'un coup, on fait silence...
    on fait silence...
    Ah ! que se passe-t-il ?
    Plus de cris, c'est l'instant !
    Plus de cris, c'est l'instant !
    Le taureau s'élance
En bondissant hors du Toril !
    Il s'élance ! il entre,
il frappe ! un cheval roule,
    Entraînant un Picador,
Ah ! bravo! Toro ! hurle la foule !
    Le taureau va, il vient,
il vient et frappe encore !
    En secouant ses banderilles,
Plein de fureur, il court !
Le cirque est plein de sang !
On se sauve, on franchit les grilles !
    C'est ton tour maintenant ! allons !
    en garde ! allons ! allons ! Ah !

Toréador, en garde ! Toréador, Toréador !
Et songe bien, oui, songe en combattant
    Qu'un œil noir te regarde,
    Et que l'amour t'attend,

  • Georges Bizet - Symphony in C Haitink Concertgebouw

    32:25

Georges Bizet (25 October 1838 – 3 June 1875), registered at birth as Alexandre César Léopold Bizet, was a French composer of the romantic era. Best known for his operas in a career cut short by his early death, Bizet achieved few successes before his final work, Carmen, which has become one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the entire opera repertoire.

    Symphony in C Major (1855)

    1. Allegro vivo
    2. Andante. Adagio (10:52)
    3. Allegro vivace (20:26)
    4. Finale. Allegro vivace (25:55)

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernhard Haitink

The Symphony in C is an early work by the French composer Georges Bizet. According to Grove's Dictionary, the symphony reveals an extraordinarily accomplished talent for a 17-year-old student, in melodic invention, thematic handling and orchestration. Bizet started work on the symphony on 29 October 1855, four days after turning 17, and finished it roughly a month later. It was written while he was studying at the Paris Conservatoire under the composer Charles Gounod, and was evidently a student assignment. Bizet showed no apparent interest in having it performed or published, and the piece was never played in his lifetime. He used certain material from the symphony in later works, however. There is no mention of the work in Bizet's letters, and it was unknown to his earlier biographers. His widow, Geneviève Halévy (1849–1926), gave the manuscript to Reynaldo Hahn, who left it along with other papers to the archives of the conservatory library, where it was found in 1933 by Jean Chantavoine. Soon thereafter, Bizet's first British biographer Douglas Charles Parker (1885–1970) showed the manuscript to the conductor Felix Weingartner, who led the first performance in Basel, Switzerland, on 26 February 1935.

The symphony was immediately hailed as a youthful masterpiece on a par with Felix Mendelssohn's overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream, written at about the same age, and quickly became part of the standard Romantic repertoire. It received its first recording on 26 November 1937, by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Walter Goehr.

    L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2
    Orquesta Reino de Aragón
    Conductor: Ricardo Casero

Georges Bizet composed L'Arlésienne as incidental music to Alphonse Daudet's play of the same name, usually translated as The Girl from Arles. It was first performed on 1 October 1872 at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in Paris.

Bizet's suite contains several folk-like themes for the music but also incorporated three existing tunes from a folk-music collection published by Vidal of Aix in 1864: La Marcho di Rei (The March of the Kings), the Danse dei Chivau-Frus, and Er dou Guet. The score achieves powerful dramatic ends with the most economic of means. Still, it received poor reviews in the wake of the premiere and is not much performed nowadays in its original form. The play itself was not successful, closing after only 21 performances. It had been staged as a last-minute replacement for another play, which had been banned by the censors, and the audience was less than favourably disposed to the new play.

The incidental music has survived and flourished, however. It is most often heard in the form of two suites for orchestra.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink
    rec. 1977

Jeux d'enfants (Children's Games) Op. 22, is a suite of twelve miniatures for piano four hands, composed in 1871.

Bizet orchestrated five of these (Nos. 6, 3, 2, 11, 12) as the Petite Suite. The remaining movements were later orchestrated by Roy Douglas (5 numbers) and Hershy Kay (2 numbers) and the complete orchestral suite has been recorded as Jeux d'enfants. Bizet himself made an orchestral version of No. 8 which he did not include in the suite. It has been recorded by Michel Plasson.

Sigfrid Karg-Elert wrote his orchestral suite after Bizet's Jeux d'enfants, Op. 21, in 1902.

In 1955, George Balanchine choreographed the entire suite as the ballet Jeux d'enfants. In 1975 he made a new ballet, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, using only four of the movements.

A version for woodwind quintet of the final movement, Le Bal, is the opening and closing theme music for the long-running syndicated Weekend Radio show, carried on many public radio stations.

    Je crois entendre encore
    Romance, No. 4,
Nadir's aria from Act I of the French opera, Les Pêcheurs de Perles
Libretto : Michel Carré and Eugène

    Score here:

My favorite version of this aria.. Sung with Vanzo's delicate, beautifully light and sensitive style, IMHO, this recording is the best Je crois entendre encore of all time.

    Synopsis:

In the past, Nadir had fallen in love with a beautiful Brahman priestess named Léïla at a Brahman temple. Now, a veiled priestess has come to his village and he recognizes her as Léïla. He sings of his love for her which has not been diminished by the time they have spent apart.

    Original text:

    Je crois entendre encore,
    Caché sous les palmiers,
    Sa voix tendre et sonore
    Comme un chant de ramier!
    O nuit enchanteresse!
    Divin ravissement!
    O souvenir charmant!
    Folle ivresse! doux rêve!

    Aux clartés des étoiles,
    Je crois encore la voir,
    Entr'ouvrir ses longs voiles
    Aux vents tièdes du soir!
    O nuit enchanteresse!
    Charmant souvenir!

    Translation:

    I think I'm still hearing
    Hidden under the palm trees
    Her tender and sound voice
Like the song of a woodpigeon
    O enchanted night
    Divine rapture
    O charming souvenir
    Crazy intoxication! Sweet dream!

In the clearness of the stars
I think I'm still seeing her
    Opening her long veils
To the warm winds of the evening
    O enchanted night
    Divine rapture
    O charming souvenir
    Crazy intoxication! Sweet dream!

    2:13

The French composer Georges Bizet was born in 1838, the child of musical parents, who did a great deal to encourage his interest in music, distracting him from other pursuits by hiding books from him. In 1848 he entered the Conservatoire in Paris, where he became a pupil of the composer Gounod, while distinguishing himself as a pianist under Marmontel.

In 1857 Bizet won the Prix de Rome, the prize awarded to those young composers, painters and writers able to pass the rigorous scrutiny of the examining committee, and in accordance with the terms of the award was able to study in Rome. His return to Paris in 1860 was to bring disappointment. He had some success with earlier operas, but it was Carmen, a work that was enjoying its first run in Paris at the time of his death, that in the end had the profoundest effect on the public, arousing equal measures of enthusiasm and hostility.

  • Georges Bizet - Variations chromatiques de concert

    13:16

In 1868 Bizet wrote his most ambitious work for piano, the Variations chromatiques. He writes to Galabert: I have just finished the Grandes variations chromatiques [...]. It is about the theme I drafted this winter. I am, I admit it, totally satisfied with this piece. It is treated audaciously, you will see. Obviously inspired by Beethoven's 32 Variations in C minor, a work that Bizet admired and performed in public, it is the only one of his works for piano which is highly dramatic and in which the sense of (inevitable) doom is present from the very beginning—the variations in C major contained promising but a deceptive (illusive) redemption. Bizet's s indications reflect the broad spectrum of expression: maestoso, leggero con eleganza, grazioso, con fuoco, agitato, alla Polacca, espressivo assai, appassionato, malinconico (melancholic), Quasi recitativ. Destiny fulfills itself at the end with all its force (tutta forza). Bizet performed the Variations chromatiques on 23 December 1871 in a concert of the Société nationale de musique.

Habanera is the popular name for L'amour est un oiseau rebelle (Love is a rebellious bird), an aria from Georges Bizet's 1875 opera Carmen. It is the entrance aria of the title character, a mezzo-soprano role, in scene 5 of the first act. It is based on a descending chromatic scale followed by variants of the same phrase in first the minor and then the major key, corresponding to the vicissitudes of love expressed in the lyrics. The vocal range covers D4 to F♯5 with a tessitura from D4 to D5.

  • Georges Bizet - Carmen Suite No. 1 - Aragonaise

    2:15
