  • ★ Billboard #1 R&B Singles of 1981 ★

    5:19

And here are the #1 Singles of 1981. I included the #2 Singles because I wanted the video to be at least 5 minutes long. One of the #2 charting singles actually set a record for most weeks at #2 at that time. I could be mistaken so please let me know if i'm wrong. I want to say there might have been another song from the 40's or 50's that had a longer run at #2 , but I lost the book ... Not lost, stolen... In fact, I noticed several of my Whitburn books are gone. I couldn't have misplaced them ? They are not in my closet..... Is this what it feels like to get senile ? I'm far from being considered a senior though.... Getting old....don't believe what they tell ya, it's a cruel, cruel joke !

In 1981, on the Soul Album chart , a new record was set. 6 consecutive solo males hit #1
Smokey Robinson - Being With You (5 WEEKS @ #1)
    Ray Parker Jr. - A Woman Needs Love (2 WEEKS @ #1)
Rick James - Street Songs (20 Non-consecutive weeks at #1)
    Al Jarreau - Breakin' Away (2 WEEKS @ #1)
Roger - The Many Facets of Roger (1 WEEK @ #1) and finally
Luther Vandross - Never Too Much (1 WEEK @ #1)

Roger unofficially became the first act in the 1980's to have 2 #1 Albums. Roger's solo debut album The Many Facets of Roger topped the chart in November 1981 and in Oct/Nov 1980 as a member of the group Zapp, he hit #1 with their debut album Zapp. If you discount the fact that he was solo and a member of a group....well then...in April 1982...The Whispers came along and became the first act to score 2 #1 Albums in the 80's.
The Jackson's had their 5th single stall at #2 ! Out of nowhere, Carl Carlton came back in a big way with the biggest hit of his career. ENOUGH of my idle chatter !

    HERE they are ! the 16 #1 Soul Singles of 1981 !!!

  • Billboard Top 40 Hits of 1981

    10:35

Yes, I know.... at the beginning of the video it says #200 - #101 BUTT ! Since this crappy video player doesn't want to cooperate...I had to cut back to #124 because the song at #123 kept the entire video from downloading due to an ERROR ! Error Code 125484E34584 or some kind of BS code like that. Maybe when I bump up my internet speed to the highest possible speed known to mankind....maybe I might be able to dl 100 songs in one video. So for now...... we have #200 thru #124 (Lol, such an odd number to end with) AND.... no follow-up video for the rest of the songs of 1981. I've been working on this one for 5 months & thought HELL ! Might as well put it up and start work on # 123 - #61. I was originally going to do #200 - #101.

Let's look at how each song is ranked !
    Peak Position on Hot 100
    Weeks at Peak Position
    Weeks in the Top 40
    Weeks on the Hot 100
And if that didn't break the tie....I went with how they are ranked from the Whitburn downloads I have (which are listed in order)

Anyway for now ... Enjoy another one of my CRAPPY YEAR END SPECIALS !!!! WOO - HOO !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Billboard # 1 Hits Jul 62 - Sept 67: Part 2 of 5

    9:58

Billboard Number one record montage in order November 1955 to June1962. This is a re-built version (but not copied), of Bill Drake's The History of Rock and Roll's Hour 52 Musical Time Sweep. While the program's sweep ended in February of 1981 with Eddie Rabbitt's I Love A Rainy Night, the reconstruction went on all the way to December of 1987 to complete 32 years of Music, Magic and Memories. Infringement unintended.

    4:36

    Lyrics:
    Ooh, short and sweet -
No sense in draggin' on past our needs.
Let's don't keep it hangin' on
If the fire's out we should both be gone.

    Chorus:
Some people are made for each other,
Some people can love one another for life -
    How 'bout us?
Some people can hold it together,
Last through all kinds of weather - can we?

Now don't you get me wrong
'Cause I'm not tryin' now to end it all.
It's just that I have seen
Too many lover's hearts lose their dream.

    Chorus

How 'bout us, how 'bout us, baby?
How 'bout us, how 'bout us, baby?
How 'bout us, how 'bout us, baby?

Are we gonna make it, girl,
Or are we gonna drift and drift and drift?

    Chorus (3x)

  • Sheena Easton - Modern Girl - Billboard Top 100 of 1981

    3:37

    Lyrics:
He wakes and says hello, turns on the breakfast show
She fixes coffee while he takes a shower
Hey that was great, he said, I wish we could stay in bed
But I got to be at work in less than an hour
She manages a smile as he walks out the door
She's a modern girl who's been though this movie before

    Chorus:
She don't build her world 'round no single man
But she's gettin' by, doin' what she can
She is free to be, what she wants to be
'N all what she wants to be is a modern girl
Na na na na na, na na na na na, na na na na na, she's a modern girl

It looks like rain again, she takes a train again
She's on her way again through London town
Where she keeps a tangerine, flicks through a magazine
Until it's time to leave her dreams on the underground
She walks to the office like everyone else
An independent lady, takin' care of herself

    chorus

She's been dreaming 'bout it all day long
As soon as she gets home, it's him on the telephone
He asks her to dinner, she says I'm not free
Tonight I'm going to stay at home and watch my TV

I don't build my world 'round no single man
But I'm gettin' by, doin' what I can
I am free to be, what I want to be
'N all what I want to be, is a modern girl

Na na na na na, na na na na na, na na na na na, she's a modern girl
Na na na na na, na na na na na, na na na na na, she's a modern girl

I finally got this one done and i know it's out of sequence, but thought i would go ahead and post it. 1981 surely was a good year in music and a few albums in this weeks countdown were among the Top 100 Albums of 1981. Not to be found on the list was Bella Donna by Stevie Nicks. Must make a great showing in 1982.
According to Chart Beat the acts with the most weeks in the Top Ten on the Album Chart in 1981 are as follows
    #1 - REO Speedwagon -30 weeks
    #2 - Pat Benatar - 28 weeks
    #3 - Styx - 27 weeks
    #4 - The Police - 26 weeks
    #5 - AC/DC - 25 weeks
    #6 - Journey - 24 weeks
    #7 - Foreigner &
    #8 - John Lennon - 21 weeks
    #8 - Stevie Nicks - 19 weeks
    #9 - Neil Diamond &- 17 weeks
    #10 Rush - 17 weeks

In this weeks Top 50 the group with the #1 Album in the USA has no single in the Top 40 ! but they do have a song at #15 on the Rock Tracks chart. I have no idea why Top 40 radio was so reluctant to play this group. Their heavy rock songs fit right into any Top 40 format. I was livid that my small hometown pathetic radio station wouldn't play them. Oh i don't want to get toooo upset over this right now. I can feel my insides beginning to boil because that nasaly 22 yr old terrible DJ at the station told me well if you want to listen to AC/DC...go out and buy their album ! So i did ! But i hate it that he was such a prick saying that to me. I should have said well your dumb radio station wouldn't know a hit if it smacked you in the face...but i wasn't as quick as i am today ! LOL ! Ok. Hope you enjoy the video :)

From the History of Rock of Roll: As the Rock revolution moved forward, many new songs emerged, and often they were identified with a particular region of the country. One of the most sucessful was the Philadelphia Sound, created by a young group of men who (after Elvis) were the first major heart throbs of Rock era. They were the teen idols. Much of their success was directly due to the wide exposure they got guest appearances on Dick Clark's tremendously successful TV dance show.
