    4:01

William Harrison Bill Withers, Jr. (born July 4, 1938) is an American singer-songwriter and musician who performed and recorded from 1970 until 1985. Some of his best-known songs are Lean on Me, Ain't No Sunshine, Use Me, Just the Two of Us, Lovely Day, and Grandma's Hands.

Bill Withers was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and into the inaugural class of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2007. Also, in 2007 his Lean On Me was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

he wrote and produced two songs on the Gladys Knight & the Pips record I Feel a Song, and in October 1974 performed in concert together with James Brown, Etta James, and B. B. King at the historic Rumble in the Jungle fight between Foreman and Ali in Zaire. Footage of his performance was included in the 1996 documentary film When We Were Kings, and he is heard on the accompanying soundtrack.
Just the Two of Us is a 1981 Grammy Award-winning R&B song recorded by Grover Washington, Jr. and Bill Withers. The song appeared on Washington's album Winelight. It reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the ARC Weekly Top 40 for a week.
Regina Belle covered Just the Two of Us in 1991 on the Tribute album To Grover, With Love, produced by Jason Miles, which made # 4 on Top Contemporary Jazz Albums Billboard Chart.
Bill Withers recorded another version of the song which is included on a CD of his greatest hits. Christian McBride covered the song with overdubbed basses only in a hidden track included in the album Philadelphia Experiment, released on Rope-A-Dope Records. Will Smith sampled Just the Two of Us in 1998. This version was parodied in the film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. It was heard in a TV commercial for Taco Bell that aired during NBC's coverage of Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, 2009. Bill Cosby did a parody version, Just the Slew of Us, as the theme music for his movie Bill Cosby: Himself.

    LYRICS:

I see the crystal raindrops fall
And see the beauty of it all
Is when the sun comes shining through
To make those rainbows in my mind
When I think of you some time
And I want to spend some time with you

    Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
    Just the two of us
    Just the two of us
    Building castles in the sky
    Just the two of us
    You and I

We look for love, no time for tears
    Wasted waters's all that is
And it don't make no flowers grow
Good things might come to those who wait
Not to those who wait to late
We got to go for all we know

    Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
    Just the two of us
    Just the two of us
    Building castles in the sky
    Just the two of us
    You and I

I hear the crystal raindrops fall
On the window down the hall
And it becomes the morning dew
    Darling, when the morning comes
And I see the morning sun
I want to be the one with you

    Just the two of us
We can make it if we try
    Just the two of us
    Just the two of us
Building big castles way on high
    Just the two of us
    You and I

    Just the two of us
    Let's get together, baby
    Just the two of us
    We can make it
    Just the two of us
    We can make it
    Just the two of us

Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
It's not warm when she's away
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And she's always gone too long
    Anytime she goes away
Wonder this time where she's gone
Wonder if she's gone to stay
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home
    Anytime she goes away
    And I know, I know, I know, I know,
    I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
    I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
    I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
    I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
    I know, I know,
Hey, I oughtta leave young thing alone
But ain't no sunshine when she's gone
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
    Only darkness every day
Ain't no sunshine when she's gone
And this house just ain't no home

    Lyrics:

When I wake up in the morning, love
And the sunlight hurts my eyes
    And something without warning, love
    Bears heavy on my mind

    Then I look at you
And the world's alright with me
    Just one look at you
And I know it's gonna be
    A lovely day
... lovely day, lovely day, lovely day ...

When the day that lies ahead of me
    Seems impossible to face
When someone else instead of me
Always seems to know the way

    Then I look at you
And the world's alright with me
    Just one look at you
And I know it's gonna be
    A lovely day.....

When the day that lies ahead of me
    Seems impossible to face
When someone else instead of me
Always seems to know the way

    Then I look at you
And the world's alright with me

Bill was the youngest of six children born in the coal mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia. His father died when he was 13, and at 18 he enlisted in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1965. While in the Navy, he became interested in music, so in 1967 he moved to Los Angeles. To supplement his dream career, he worked as an aircraft assembler. In 1970 his demo tape got him signed to Sussex Records and Booker T Jones was assigned to produce him. The funds ran out after the second of three three hour studio sessions, and there was a six month wait until the last session commenced with Stephen Stills playing guitar on the final session. The LP Just As I Am was released in 1971 with the single Ain't No Sunshine peaking at #3 that same year. The repeated phrase of I know was originally being used as a placeholder for other lyrics, but Bill felt that there was no need and kept them as written. The 26 times it is repeated has never been beaten. He had several successful follow ups, including Lean On Me and Use Me from his 1972 LP Still Bill. His highest placing single after that was 1973's Kissing My Love and then was unable to make top 30 until 1977's Lovely Day, and then went all the way to #2 pop as the guest vocalist on Grover Washington's Just The Two Of Us in 1981. He has remained active on the R&B charts, but his chart life has been on temporary hold since 1985. Bill has this quality of directness, like he is singing right to me...when this song came out it was early spring, the snow was melting and the sun was shining...and I had to pull over and listen to it all....and the world was all right with me thanks, Uncle Bill

When I was little, I remember hearing Ain't No Sunshine in a movie and I immediately fell in love with the soul in this song. It was always one of those songs that I just sang around the house.. doing homework, cleaning whetever, etc.. but I never considered actually singing it. Then after I reaaally started liking to sing, my mom suggested I learn this one. The band is so unbelievable on this, from the awesome drum beat to the gorgeous cello, that I got emotional a few times at how beautiful it was. I hope you like our rendition :) xx canen

Twelve year-old upstate New York artist, Cănen (pronounced ‘cannon”), introduces her second EP, A Matter of Time, adding to her collection of jazz standards and other vintage classics, along with an original by noted singer/songwriter Anna Coogan with Canen. For over a year, Canen’s songs have been played multiple times on radio stations in the US, England, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Italy, and the Netherlands, including WFMU, (metro NYC), and blues and roots (UK). She has been showcased online, including in Fatea Magazine’s Autumn 2015 showcase, and lauded in a review in de Krentin Uit de Pop (Netherlands). Two of her cover songs, including Ain’t Misbehavin’, as well as an original song, were selected by the Unsigned Only Contest as Semi-Finalists, making her one of the youngest artists featured in this top ten percent category.

As in her debut EP, Think Twice, she once again joins Anna Coogan (JD Foster, Johnny Dowd), Grammy-winning engineer Will Russell and musical heavyweights Willie B (Neko Case, Jamie Lidell), and Michael Stark (Johnny Dowd, Spoon), adding renowned cello player Hank Roberts (Bill Frisell), and veteran bass player, Brian Dozoretz (Queen Latifah) into the mix at Electric Wilburland in Newfield, NY. Her cover of the 1942 chart-topper, I’ve Got a Guy in Kalamazoo, is a nod to her great-great Uncle Barry Wood, lead vocalist on NBC’s Your Hit Parade, and immediate predecessor to Frank Sinatra.

Bill Withers - Who Is He (And What Is He to You)

William Harrison Bill Withers, Jr. (born July 4, 1938) is an American singer-songwriter and musician who performed and recorded from 1970 until 1985. Some of his best-known songs are Lean on Me, Ain't No Sunshine, Use Me, Just the Two of Us, Lovely Day, and Grandma's Hands. His life was recently the subject of the documentary film Still Bill.
Withers was born the youngest of thirteen children in the small coal-mining town of Slab Fork, West Virginia. Raised in nearby Beckley, West Virginia, Withers was thirteen years old when his father died. He enlisted with the United States Navy at age eighteen and served for nine years, during which time he became interested in singing and writing songs. Soon after his discharge from the Navy in 1970, he relocated to Los Angeles for a musical career.
Withers worked as an assembler for several different companies, including Douglas Aircraft Corporation, while recording demo tapes with his own money, shopping them around and performing in clubs at night. When he debuted with the song Ain't No Sunshine he refused to resign his job because of his belief that the music business was a fickle industry and that he was still a novice compared to other acts.

    Lyrics

A man we passed just tried to stare me down
And when I looked at you, you looked at the ground
I don't know who he is but I think that you do

    Dag gummit
Who is he and what is he to you

I have something in my heart and in your eyes
Tell me he's not someone just passin' by
And when you cleared your throat was that your cue

    Dag gummit dag
Who is he and what is he to you

Now when I add the sum of you and me
I get confused and I keep coming up with three
You're too much for one man but not enough for two

    Dag gummit
Who is he and what is he to you

Hey you tell me man don't have not much for intuition
That what you really think or are you wishin'
Before you wreck your old home be certain of the new

    Dag gummit
Who is he and what is he to you

    Dag gummit
Who is he and what is he to you

    Dag gummit
Who is he and what is he to you

    Dag gummit
Who is he and what is he to you

    4:40

Last month, I paid homage to one of my favorite artists of all time, Tupac Shakur. Along with an amazing talk about Tupac’s importance with Rob Markman of MTV, TOCK and I recreated some of Tupac's most iconic pictures. Though people had both negative and positive things to say about my photoshoot, the pictures weren’t taken to garner opinions. The pictures were my way of paying tribute and giving thanks to an artist that continues to inspire me and so many others. (Of course, if you read the article or listened to the interview you already knew that ;) )

We live in a day and age where young people don’t have much patience...No patience to read anything longer than 140 characters...No patience to research...No patience to study the history of the art they want so desperately to be apart of. Not only is there a lack of patience, but a lack of respect. There’s not a lot of respect being given to the true artists that came before us. Everyone is so hell bent on being THE best that no one is taking the time to honor the individuals who have influenced us.

Well, I’m getting older and I realize that I am just a compilation of all the great creators who came before me. Not only is it my duty, but it is also my pleasure to show my appreciation.

This month, for his 76th birthday (July 4), TOCK and I want to pay homage to Bill Withers. Bill Withers' music has been blessing my ears since I was a baby. I didn’t know it then and not until recently did I understand that this man is responsible for some of the most beautiful, relatable, heart felt songs ever written. Bill is not only a genius songwriter, but he is an amazing singer and musician. The more research I do on Bill, the more I love him. Bill didn't start creating music until he was in his 30’s, proving that there is no limit to what you are capable of. One of the things that inspires me the most about Bill is his attention to lyrics and storytelling. It wasn't about his image, being flashy, or putting on a “show. For him, it was about the song. No fluff, just pure feeling. It was about connecting. It was about the music. And it is still about the music.
