Jim Redgate is a highly sought-after Australian luthier, known for his guitars built for artists such as Ana Vidovic, Pepe Roméro and Odair Assad. This lattice-braced model is an exact copy of the guitar that Ana Vidovic plays. Jim Redgate’s instruments have their own sound and touch. The breath-taking volume combined with rich harmonics and impressive clarity of sound are quite unique. The playability is fantastic, and the guitars are relatively light in weight compared to the Australian standard.

We’ve of course heard Ana Vidovic in concert many times playing on a Redgate guitar, but this guitar convinced us even more of the quality of Jim’s work. The honesty and spontaneity of each note, the magnificent volume, the ease of playing, and the unique sound character of this guitar make it an instrument not only rare in Europe, but above all extremely enchanting.

A musical portrait of a master guitar-maker of the 19th century.

Great instruments have always been associated with great musicians, and this is true in the guitar world too, at least from the early 19th century onwards. Early in his career, Antonio de Torres (1817-1892), like other luthiers before him, found a performer ideally suited to his instruments – the young Andalusian guitarist Julián Arcas. The technical innovations in construction and timbre pioneered by Torres enabled Arcas to give full expression to his artistry in works such as the florid Fantasía sobre El paño o sea Punto de La Habana with which Luigi Attademo opens this new studio album.

    5:14

Francisco de Asís Tárrega y Eixea (21 November 1852 – 15 December 1909) was a Spanish composer and classical guitarist of the Romantic period.
Tárrega was born on 21 November 1852, in Villarreal, Province of Castellón, Spain. It is said that Francisco's father played flamenco and several other music styles on his guitar; when his father was away working as a watchman at the Convent of San Pascual, the child would take his father's guitar and attempt to make the beautiful sounds he had heard. Francisco's nickname as a child was Quiquet.
As a child, he ran away from his nanny and fell into an irrigation channel and injured his eyes. Fearing that his son might lose his sight completely, his father moved the family to Castellón de la Plana to attend music classes because as a musician he would be able to earn a living, even if blind. Both his first music teachers, Eugeni Ruiz and Manuel González, were blind.

Subscribe to Pablo Sáinz-Villegas’ official youtube channel

“Adelita” is the fourth video from Pablo Sáinz-Villegas’s new album “Soul of Spanish Guitar” which features some of the best-known works ever written for classical guitar.

Now regarded as one of the world’s leading soloists on his instrument, Sáinz-Villegas embodies “the soul of the Spanish guitar” and has long been internationally acclaimed as an ambassador of Spanish culture. He is the first guitarist in almost four decades to be invited by the Berliner Philharmoniker to perform in the Berlin Philharmonie, and also the first guitarist within that period to perform at the orchestra’s traditional New Year’s Eve concert in 2020. After some thirty prizes at international competitions and after concerts in over forty countries Sáinz-Villegas is rightly seen as the worthy successor of the legendary father of the classical guitar, Andrés Segovia. On the Sony Classical label he takes his place in the famous tradition of outstanding guitarists that includes John Williams and Julian Bream.

When supreme virtuosity is coupled with lightness of touch, when passion is combined with melancholy and when the six strings of the guitar vibrate like a single heartbeat, then Sáinz-Villegas is in his element. For his latest album this exceptional artist has chosen ten works that are especially close to his heart: “Spanish music represents a blend of different influences,” he explains, because “the harmonies, rhythms and melodies of a whole range of folk traditions” come together here. These traditions are not just Arab and Christian but others, too. In the music that has been written for the Spanish guitar, listeners may recognize “the voice of an entire nation”. Here is a language based on “the centuries-old peaceful coexistence of a variety of different cultures”.

Lesson: How to Play Lagrima by Francisco Tárrega on Classical Guitar
    Level: Intermediate (Grade 4)

This is one of the most famous pieces in the guitar repertoire. Lagrima [tear] by Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) is a beautiful melody with some nice accompaniment below it. The simple melody integrated into the accompaniment pattern is a nice challenge in legato melody as well as voice independence and balance. A few challenging shapes and the Barre are a bit tricky but so short that it is all manageable. Get the free sheet music and follow the video lessons.

    Hermann Hauser® I – 1914

Hermann Hauser® I is regarded as one of the greatest guitar-maker of the classical guitar history. Acknowledged by A. Segovia, J. Bream and many more pioneers of the guitar, he established himself as one of the most successful, talented and sought-after luthiers of all time.
Hermann Hauser® I ‘s way to build guitars greatly evolved throughout the 1920s. Strongly influenced by Miguel Llobet’s Antonio de Torres and Andrés Segovia’s Manuel Ramirez/Santos Hernandez, he progressively let the traditional Bavarian Tierce-guitars, Viennese models, etc. aside in order to focus on the construction of Spanish guitars. Not only did he succeed to adapt his craft to this new concept, but he overtook his predecessor. Improving his instrument’s sound qualities and giving them a unique pure personality, he eventually built the guitar that would be played and recorded for more than 20 years by Andrés Segovia, who called the instrument “the greatest guitar of our epoch”.

This guitar is a particularly interesting instrument by Hermann Hauser® I, which has some special features for its year of origin 1914. For example, back and sides are made of Brazilian Rosewood, which was difficult to obtain at that time and was also a significant cost factor. This makes it the oldest known Hauser I guitar made with Brazilian Rosewood. Also striking is the body shape, which is clearly based on the Spanish shape and very close to the dimensions of the Antonio de Torres FE 09 played by Miguel Llobet. The flat neck shape is also unusual. This is based on a preference of the contemporary guitar virtuoso Heinrich Albert and is therefore also called ” Albert-Neck “.
The spruce top is already fitted with the Hauser® Patent-Bracing inside, which was only patented in 1920, and on the top there is the original concert-bridge, which is unique in its form until then. This shows that Hermann Hauser® I was involved in the construction of the Spanish guitar 10 years earlier than previously assumed. The frame depth of this guitar corresponds more to the Viennese and Munich models of Hermann Hauser® I known until then.
This guitar is thus the connection between the guitar type built up to then and known from Hermann Hauser® I and his later Spanish models. This makes this guitar an extraordinary piece of contemporary history.
The instrument was skilfully restored by Hermann Hauser® III in 1989. It has some very excellently repaired cracks on the top and is therefore in a very well restored and playable condition. The sound of this guitar is reminiscent of a bygone era. The mids sound nice and compact and the trebles very clear and brilliant. The guitar is offered with a special case made for this instrument, which is also exceptional.

  • Classical Guitar - Memories of the Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega

    4:36

Classical Guitar - Memories of the Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega (1896)

An instrumental arrangement based on a recorded midi sequence.

Notes: Recuerdos de la Alhambra (Memories of the Alhambra) is a classical guitar piece composed in 1896 by Spanish composer and guitarist Francisco Tárrega. He wrote it in Granada.
A virtuoso on his instrument, Tárrega was known as the Sarasate of the guitar. His repertoire included many original compositions for the guitar (Capricho Árabe, Danza Mora, et al.) as well as guitar arrangements of works written for other instruments by composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Frédéric Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn. As with his friend Isaac Albéniz and many of their Spanish contemporaries, Tárrega had an interest in combining the prevailing Romantic trend in classical music with Spanish folk elements, which he did with Recuerdos de la Alhambra and his transcriptions for guitar of several of Albeniz's piano pieces, notably the fiery Asturias (Leyenda).

Recuerdos de la Alhambra shares a title with the Spanish language translation of Washington Irving's 1832 book, Tales of the Alhambra, written during the author's four-year stay in Spain. It contains extensive examples of the tremolo technique often performed by advanced classical guitarists.

  • SUEÑO Mazurka | Francisco TÁRREGA || Michal Stanikowski

    2:46

    Short Link:

Francisco TÁRREGA (1852 – 1909) was a Spanish composer and classical guitarist of the Romantic period. He is known for such pieces as Recuerdos de la Alhambra. He is often called the father of classical guitar and is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

As a composer Tárrega was conservative, his style was similar to the general trends in the second half of the 19th century. A virtuoso on his instrument, he was known as the Sarasate of the guitar.

Tárrega is considered to have laid the foundations for 20th century classical guitar and for increasing interest in the guitar as a recital instrument. Tárrega preferred small intimate performances over the concert stage.

    Please enjoy:)!

A trip to the fabled Moorish palace, Alhambra, provided all the inspiration that Tárrega would need to write this gem. The tremolo in the melodic line heightens the emotional intensity and makes it one of the best-known works in the classical guitar literature of the Romantic Period.

A la Srta. Da. Rosita Gonzales de Melo

    Rosita by Francisco Tárrega

Rosita is a technically challenging piece composed for the Classical Guitar by Francisco Tárrega. This short Polka ultilises techniques such as glissando, slurs, fast position shifts, high positions, harmonics, drop-down tuning and etc. Rosita is played with the sixth string tuned down to D, one octave lower than the 4th open string.

Rosita begins with a fast glissando from the 2nd position to the fifth. To facilitate the fast shift, I highly recommend fixing the elbow to act like a pivot while maintaining the basic shape of the left hand to prepare for the next.

If the player/performer chooses to play this at a fast pace, some rest strokes of the thumb may be employed to mute the higher basses(especially open string) to prevent over-ringing for a clean transition. Due to the fact that the dropped-D tuning, alot of overtones can be activated while playing certain notes. Muting the unwanted basses becomes an indispensable technique for Rosita.

00:03 - The version presented in this video is more widely played than the examination version in the LCM Guitar Grade 6 booklet. The main difference is the fast position shifting first string slurs in the third bar. You can hear some buzzing during this part. The buzzing was due to the inaccuracies during fast position shifting. If you find this part of the music to be challenging or difficult despite multiple attempts to correct it, you may like to play the slurs like how you would play the notes in thirds as notated in the LCM Guitar Syllabus.

00:38 - To get a nice effect at the 3rd bar from the last of section B, you may like to mute the strings with your thumb before executing the pull-off slur of F# to D. This part sounds best (to me) when played near to fingerboard away from the bridge/saddle with an exaggerated crescendo.

01:00 - To get a similar effect at near the end of Section C of Rosita, you will need to hold on to the finger 2 (middle finger of left hand) and do a light descending glissando before the 2nd inversion of the A minor arpeggio.

    Hope it helps!

    Joshua Ho

➔ Gran Vals by Francisco Tárrega (PDF Sheet Music, Tab, Free Unfingered):

Gran Vals by Francisco Tárrega (1852–1909) - Lesson, Tutorial, Sheet Music, and Tab for Classical Guitar. PDF download. The level is early advanced (Grade 9). This is also known to some as the Nokia tune as it is based on Gran Vals (also called Grande Valse or Grand Waltz). Includes a notation-only edition and a TAB edition as well. I give a performance followed by a full lesson tutorial and how to play walk through. This is one of the most popular works in the guitar repertoire. This is also known to some as the Nokia tune as it is based on Gran Vals (also called Grande Valse or Grand Waltz). It has been the icon of Finnish corporation Nokia since the 1990s, becoming the first identifiable musical ringtone on a mobile phone.

Play the melody on its own. By playing the melody on its own you’ll learn the legato phrasing and dynamic shaping that is ideal for the piece before adding in all the difficult chords and shifts. Here’s the first two lines of Gran Vals with the melody highlighted.

Practice it slowly with a metronome (just for practice). After playing the melody try playing the piece slowly with a metronome. Gran Vals has the potential for lots of rubato but before you start adding a bunch of rhythmic give or take it’s important to be able to play the music as written. The notation is as close to the rhythm as Tarrega could write so we know the correct rhythms. After you can do this you can relax it a bit and add rubato where desired. At first practice with three beats per bar on the metronome and how you feel the beat but later I’d recommend feeling this work in just one beat per bar for a more simple rhythmic feel.

-The Harmonic will come out more clearly if you go a bit ponticello (near the bridge) in the right hand.

    - Look for guide fingers (keeping a finger down on the string during a shift). There are tons of opportunity for guide fingers and it really reduced the destabilizing nature of all the shifts.

-Practice without the ornaments at first to secure the primary notes. There is so much going on sometimes that it’s best to lock down the primary notes first.

-The remaining specific ideas are covered in the video. Enjoy. Feel free to ask questions in the comment section below.
