  • DREAM THEATER - The Best of Times

    3:05

Remembering (and attempting to play) this solo which is one of my favorites John Petrucci solos. I really didn’t practice it very much (as you can noticed by the mistakes I made), because I’m very focused on my own music right now, but it was just an attempt after so many time without even listening to this song, so don’t be so harsh on me ????

Thanks for watching and, if you like it, please give me a like, subscribe and share it!

We spend a lot of time on this channel talking about the best that rock and roll has to offer, and I think it may be time to mix it up a little bit, because we all have seen and heard rock & roll performances that are just… bad. You know the ones I’m talking about. And if you don’t, that’s ok. Because this week we are talking about the worst guitar solos. So everyone prepare to cringe… we’re doing this.

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci has been known for his long, melodic and extremely virtuosic solos for more than two and a half decades now. One of his finest moments came on Dream Theater's 2009 album Black Clouds & Silver Linings with his outro solo to The Best of Times.

In this The Best of Times guitar lesson I am gonna to show you how to play this epic and beautifully melodic solo note-for-note.

For those of you unfamiliar with this track and this outro solo, go ahead and find it on YouTube or something and fast forward to about the 10 minute mark. That is when this incredible guitar solo begins and it lasts well over 3 minutes until the song fades out.

This solo has a bit of everything in it. Beautiful melodic lines that work perfectly over the haunting chord progression, blisteringly fast alternate picking and sweep picking sections, and many large bends that can seriously send your calluses running home to mama! :)

In order to properly tackle this entire solo, I have decided to break it up into 3 video lessons. That is pretty much what is required to teach something that is so expansive in both time and technique.

I will start each video lesson performing the part of the solo that I will be teaching in that particular video lesson. After that I will then break each phrase down for you note-for-note.

A good part of the solo is dedicated to slow and highly emotional guitar melodies. Don't automatically think that these sections are gonna be easy just because the aren't being played at a 1000 notes per second.

To really make those notes sing you need to make sure that not only are all the bends in tune, but you will also what to add a liberal amount of vibrato to those notes. Try to focus on a smooth and even vibrato and not some erratic thing that doesn't sound very musical.

For the really advanced licks in this solo, you will find that each one of them can make an excellent technique exercise. If there is one thing about John Petrucci's solo playing it is that not only is he very precise, but his licks are usually very pattern oriented and can be easily broken down into a nice technique exercise. He isn't one of those players who just lets it fly with a random sequence of notes that is hard to recreate. Instead, his playing is usually very focused with definitive patterns to follow during the fast sections.

As with anything this advanced, I usually go through the notes in the lesson a little bit quicker than usual. That is because not only do we have a lot of notes to get through, but in addition, if your ability level on the guitar is to the level that you can even consider learning such a monster guitar solo, you probably just need to see me play each phrase slowly instead of getting overly detailed about each note. I will call out each note, but it will go by faster than usual.

Pay close attention during all of these lessons to when I point out a specific pattern that John Petrucci is playing and then sequencing across the fretboard. That pattern goes a long way in helping understand how he is creating those extended fast licks.

So good luck with this one, it truly is an epic solo!

Click here for ALL of my Led Zeppelin song lessons in my Led Zeppelin playlist!

In this video lesson we will take a look at the Led Zeppelin classic Good Times Bad Times.

Good Times Bad Times was the opening song on Led Zeppelin's debut album in 1969.

The main riff that Jimmy Page plays during the verse of the song is actually quite busy and a nice challenge. That riff was actually written by bassist John Paul Jones and contains numerous fast string crossings utilizing primarily 16th notes.

In the first Good Times Bad Times guitar lesson I will demonstrate how to get that main riff under your fingers quickly, in addition to all the other riffs found in the song.

In the second lesson video I will teach you how to play Jimmy Page's solo note-for-note!

We have quite a bit to challenge us here in Good Times Bad Times. Besides the first verse riff, will also have chorus chords that use the thumb to finger the bass strings. Also, the second verse has a different riff than the first and it requires you to play some very large and fast shifts.

Just break all of the riffs down into sections to help speed up the process of learning them. They aren't very hard to understand, it just may take a bit of repetition to get them completely up to speed. Remember to always practice slow enough to keep it clean. Getting too fast too quickly only produces sloppy playing.

In the second lesson video we take a look at the solo. This solo starts off with Jimmy Page firing on all cylinders right out of the gate with some fast blues bends and double-stops.

He follows this with a rapid ascending triplet lick that follows the E minor pentatonic scale. There is a pattern to this lick that you will want to master before trying to move across all the strings like Jimmy does. This kind of detailed practice will make the lick much easier to play in the long run.

From there we have some more bends to contend with. In fact, this solo is quite the bending workout! There are a couple of times that Jimmy Page performs a bend of 2 whole steps.. OUCH!! So practice those sections sparingly so you don't get blisters on your fingertips.

Have learning this track which served as the introduction to the world of the legendary band Led Zeppelin!

    Carl..

In this guitar lesson video series, we will take an in-depth look at the always ripping Skid Row and their hit power ballad I Remember You.

In the first I Remember You guitar lesson below, we will be taking a look at the main acoustic riffs that open the song and that also makes up a majority of the verse.

The riff is based around just two simple chords but is made much more difficult by some agile fills thrown in between the changes that requires a pretty accurate picking touch.

If you follow the picking indications that I demonstrate in the video, everything will be much easier. The key is to make the picking of those fills as economical as possible.

Of course there is the issue of having to do hammer-ons and pulls-offs on an acoustic guitar, but as long your guitar is set up well it shouldn't be much of a problem.

If you do have a problem with any of the fills, simply isolate it and practice it by itself over and over again while staying in rhythm. That kind of detailed practice is how you can overcome most technical difficulties on the guitar.

In the second lesson we will cover all the heavy guitar riffs found in the rest of the song. A lot of the guitar riffs move around quite a bit and have a bunch of fills as well. So even though it is rhythm guitar work, it is still kept very interesting but not too challenging technically.

In the third and final video lesson, I will tackle that amazing guitar solo note-for-note. There are some really great and unusual guitar licks in this one so make sure you follow along phrase-by-phrase just like I teach it.

There is also a quick outro solo which I will cover at the end of the third video. It contains a great repeated legato lick to help build up your frethand chops.

Hope you guys enjoy learning this great 80's power ballad classic by one of my favorite bands of that era. :)

All of my Steely Dan song lessons here!

In this Reelin' In The Years guitar lesson video series, I will show you how to play this guitar driven classic by the great Steely Dan note-for-note!

Written by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, it was the second single from their 1972 album Can't Buy a Thrill.

However, the guitar solos that are heard throughout the song were performed by Elliott Randall. In fact, Jimmy Page has reportedly said that Elliott Randall's guitar solo on Reeling In the Years is his favorite solo of all time.

The harmony guitar sections were performed by Jeff Baxter. I will be covering all of these solos, harmony guitar sections and all other parts of Reelin' In The Years throughout these 3 video lessons.

I will teach each section of the song in the order that it appears and will give you the exact minute and second mark so you will know where I am at in the song.

In the first video, I will demonstrate that instantly recognizable opening guitar solo with the rhythm guitar parts as well. That will be followed by the verse section which uses some challenging fingerings to create a really cool sounding chord progression. After that is the chorus along with the first chorus guitar solo. I will finish out the first video lesson with a look at the guitar solo over the second chorus.

In the second video lesson, I will open with the first harmony guitar section. These sections are probably just as recognizable as the chorus for most people. Both guitar parts make for a great alternate picking workout. I will then tackle the main guitar solo that is performed by Elliott Randall. Once again, this solo has plenty of memorable licks that aren't overly challenging but a ton of fun to play. I will finish out this second video lesson with a look at the guitar solo during the third chorus.

The last video lesson will finish out the song with a look at the second guitar harmony section and outro solo.

I hope you guys are ready for a bunch of notes! Enjoy! #reelinintheyearsguitarlesson #steelydan #guitarcovers
