  • Defragmentation/blue - Audio-architectural installation by Bernhard Gal and Yumi Kori, 1999

    Defragmentation/blue

Audio-architectural installation by Bernhard Gal and Yumi Kori. Presented at Studio Five Beekman, New York City, 1999.

    Defragmentation/blue (1999):
    Reflective ribbons, black light, loudspeakers

    Further information:

    Video by John Roach.

In Defragmentation/blue, time seems to stand still. Five bright blue lines float in the dark. Depending on the viewers perspective, they appear as a horizon or as a covering of the space, and they continue into the infinity of unlimited black. In actuality, the light rays are ultraviolet-reflecting ribbons. To move further into the room, one has to crawl under them, which completely changes the visual and acoustic perception of the space. The unboundedness of the architectural installation is reinforced by the static-repetitive structure of the sound installation. In the compositional design of Defragmentation/blue, Bernhard Gal incorporates psycho-acoustic phenomena like masking effects, combination tones, and the gestalt laws of psychology. In a progression of frozen time-windows, superpositions of partial tones unfold, varying with the listeners position in the room; micro-tonal glissandos form floating sound textures that fill the whole room.

  • Night Pulses - Intermedia Installation by Bernhard Gal.

    8:05

Night Pulses - Intermedia Installation, 2004.

In Night Pulses, the Austrian sound artist Bernhard Gal combines urban light signals (NYC skyline) with the musical-sensory experience of their transference into sound. Blinking pulses of light from nocturnal horizons of big cities the signal lights of high-rises, airplanes, helicopters, ships, etc. create a light score whose rhythmic complexity remains hidden from view. The synchronization of these visual structures with sound events makes existing rhythmical interrelations perceptible on both sensory levels.

  • Ein Sommernachtstraum | Vox populi

    1:33

    Benjamin Britten
    Ein Sommernachtstraum
    Oper in drei Akten (1960)

  • Concerto, mvt.1 Burnet Tuthill

    5:18

    Live performance of:
Concerto, Op. 50 (1965) by Burnet Tuthill (1888-1982)

    David Babich, saxophone
    Jessica Stitt, piano

Burnet Tuthill was the only child of his musical parents. His mother was an organist and his father an architect and amateur cellist. Though he had never designed a concert hall, Burnet's father, William, was commissioned to design his one and only concert hall. Unfortunately, William was not commissioned to design any more concert halls even though Andrew Carnegie was certainly satisfied with his now historic and legendary Hall in New York City. Burnet Tuthill was no hack himself and served as the general manager at the Cincinnati College of Music, helped found the Society for the Publication of American Music to promote the publication of music by living American composers, and co-founded and served as treasurer and secretary of the National Association of Schools of Music which led to the establishment of national standards of degree requirements among music schools and conservatories. College music majors can partially thank Burnet for making them take biology, ancient history or similar courses before they can graduate. Tuthill also founded the music department at Southwestern, now Rhodes College, in Memphis, Tennessee and eventually combined it with the Memphis College of Music.

At the National Music Camp at Interlochen, Michigan, Tuthill overheard the saxophone instructor Cecil Leeson's request for a saxophone sonata to be written by Howard Hanson. Hanson shelved the idea of writing for saxophone and lost his place in saxophone history. Both Cecil and Burnet were anxious to promote new music for the often neglected saxophone so Tuthill wrote Sonata, Op. 20 in 1939 for Cecil Leeson. Cecil waited 25 years to personally thank Burnet for the composition but returned the favor by commissioning three more saxophone pieces from Tuthill, one of which was Concerto, Op. 50 for tenor saxophone. Even though the piece was written for Leeson, James Houlik got wind of Tuthill's concerto during his studies at Ball State with Leeson and premiered the piece sans Leeson's knowledge.

Tuthill's concerto is a fairly tonal work. The first movement saxophone part contains many pitch class sets of [0,1,4] and [0,1,5]. Labeled a different way, the first set contains interval groupings of a half-step and minor third and the second set contains interval groupings of a half-step and major third. The half-step is unquestionably Tuthill's interval of choice for the first movement. The second movement begins with a slow, simple and at times canonic melody which is interrupted by a fast B section exploiting the half-step interval. The second movement concludes with an abbreviated slow A section. The third movement opens with loosely pentatonic lines in the saxophone while the piano part is more chromatic. The saxophone quickly degrades into a more chromatic melody but the piano still maintains fragments of the sax's earlier melodies. Tuthill's unconventional tempo labeling of Snappy and rhythmic for movement three is an accurate description of its character.

After serving on an ASP work crew in June 2009, I gave a recital to raise money for the groups' work. ASP's mission is to make homes safer, drier, and warmer for the people of Central Appalachia. I was very moved by the desperate need of the people I met working in the mountains of Kentucky. Our nation was built on the coal that came from this region, but it's people have always lived in poverty. This series of videos is an effort to bring hope and new life to some of the poorest people in our country. Please visit for more information, or watch the ASP video
